MASTERPIECE....is what this manga is. In my opinion...cliche....does not exist with this one. I prefer action over everything! action movies, animes, and books. And this is definitely action with a story you cant hate...the only time i find myself hating the manga, is when i'm "waiting" on the next release.

The first few pages of the first chapter...i "really" wanted to drop this, because it seemed like a very smutty action manga with a pointless plot, but in the middle of the first chapter i realized if i drop this i would have regretted it. Now im addicted to another manga besides Berserk.

14 ... extraordinary warriors given a dangerous task by their emperor as the 14 lances to defeat a dangerous enemy. One of the warriors Ascheriit (now named Koinzell), a young, prodigious swordsman so skilled grants him the title of Blade Master. Losing 3 on the way there..struck with fear the remaining 7 decides to give up. Ascheriit and the other 3 decides to complete the task, and completed it. On the way back the 7 others plotted in fear of being called cowards ambushes the 4, killing them. The 7 return to the emperor as heroes and gaining wealth and the citizens loyalty. Telling the emperor that Ascheriit and the other3 betrayed them branding them as the lances of betrayal. Ascheriit determined not to die raged in anger eats a fairy allowing him to return 20 years later in a different identity, but taking a toll good and bad on his body. Annnnnd the journey to revenge starts noooow!

have you ever read a manga in your younger years and took it up again and you learn how much crap you see in every pages, every word, and every story?

Yes, this manga is definitely one of those.

boats floating, a sudden rival that existed for no other purpose than to show that the lead hero can be defeated, a whole series where I can certainly summarize in one sentence, fights where a dying opponent, where separated head, legs, arms, eyes crushed, suddenly becomes a god and can defeat all, unstoppable, where no hope can possible possess its victims, then... tada! the hero turns the table, ... bones reformed, crushed brain regenerates, then... tada! the opponent turns the table.

This goes on and on. People turning tables. Sigh. It is that kind of manga.

Then to the author's thinking, I would assume he thought his readers uncomprehending when 4 pages are drawn from every corner when the hero stabs the villain and die, I assume from wound infection considering how long they battled, like we are all unsuspecting of the outcome.

ps. I'm only now interested on the ending for the sake of my past self, I believe was having a coma when reading the manga, or perhaps dead.

This manga, while I started off thinking it was going to be mediocre, has taken a turn for the better. This is a seinen mature manga, therefore they acknowledge the realities of sex, war and politics. It starts out with Koinzell on his quest for revenge and branches out into a depiction of the political intrigue and realities behind a peace that was created under false means and cowardice. I like how they used the 7 sins of man to depict the 7 heroes, which btw for all you people that automatically assume these with catholicism and religion, these are actually things that are more ... philosophical in nature and only artists and writers seem to explore these without assuming the basis being religion. What gets interesting is how one character's quest for revenge unveils the true personalities of the ones who were identified as heroes, and how the corruption of the kingdom ensued.

Story: 9

I am not fully read, and it is still ongoing, but like I stated up there, it is an interesting story. Right now where I am at, chapter 107, there are too many plotholes for me to understand fully how certain things are going on, and since I don't want to give spoilers, lets just say something happened and no explanation was given of how and why. Overall the story keeps you wanting to read if you like decent plots.

Art: 9

Amazing art, despite what people have said about the main character's design, the character designs in this manga are done well, and beautiful background art, some pieces as detailed as Berserk. While not as awesome as Berserk when it comes to the violent depictions of people and monsters getting slaughtered, it is still pretty damn awesome.

Character: 10

I love the characters, and I actually see development in Koinzell/Ascheriit. In the beginning it seems as if he wanted revenged solely out of anger, but what I see is much more than anger. You definitely see more than one side to him and you start to see that he is starting to move forward. You see how human the characters are, and even feel for the ones that die. You also see growth in someone who was stuck in the same place for a long time.

I enjoy reading this manga, and hope that it can reach a worthy conclusion. I just hope that this doesn't become a manga that gets shut down by the so called fans. I am not a fan, but I appreciate all things, so I will definitely support this artist in his pursuit of truth.

This manga is probably on my top 10, my first of course being Berserk and this being around second or third.

Like many other mangas, I had looked into Ubel Blatt and then put it aside because of a in depth start that somewhat put me off. Later I decided to my current happiness to pick it up again. For those who are interested in reading this story, take my word as someone who constantly judges a book by the cover, even though you (and I) really shouldn't; give it 3-4 chapters before you give up on it, and yes it is a little confusing at first.

Ubel Blatt is not a typical story of a hero on a quest; instead it is a story of revenge ... at almost any cost. For me personally, I was glad that the MC wasn't a total push over towards his allies. He doesn't hold back if people give him a hard time and doesn't expend a ton of effort helping enemies in an attempt to convert them, in short he's an anti-hero.

For those people who are concerned about gore and sex, this might not be the manga for you, for while it's not rampant, it happens often enough to take notice.

tl;dr Try and at least read 3-4 chapters before you decide to drop it, it's well worth it.

Before getting into the review, I have to give some background information about Ubel Blatt which will explain the reason many flaws this manga have. Ubel Blatt originally started as a Seinen Dark Fantasy manga but ended up as a run off the mill shounen story due to several cancellations. I think it changed 3 magazines, cancelled then picked up by another magazine. This is the reason why it had ran over 10 years.

Ubel Blatt is a revenge story; MC betrayed by his friends and left to death then raised from death to get pay back. As a fan of dark fantasy genre, I ... can say this with confidence that it has a great story, at least the first half of it. Top of that, it has very beautiful world building and art that can rival to Berserk (I know it is blasphemy to even think of that).

Story started very strong and fluid, introduced a likeable main character with good supporting characters, as well as well written villians. Everything was going well until the first `forced haitus`. Then quality started to drop when another magazine picked it up. After picked up by new magazine, editoral touches became more obvious. Characters become annoying and stupid, tone shifts from dark to pink. `Forget revenge, we have to fight against evil!` Wtf?Last parts of the manga is straight up main-stream shounen. Everyone gathers together to fight the `evil` then everyone lives happily ever after.

You cannot start your story with main character slaughtering 200 soldiers to whom he has no personal beef, then end it with he is becoming advocate for peace and harmony. It is too unnatural to explain it as character development. I dont blame the magaka for this. Clearly the magazine editors pushed him to turn the story to mainstream so it could sell. Still it is disappointing as hell for me.

Ubel Blatt had the potential to become Berserk but ended up like Shaman King. Still, it has great artwork and a good 70-80 chapters worth of story. I recommend to cheack it out but stop reading when plot strays from revenge or MC disappears after a fight. Just consider him dead and call it a day.

Have you ever read something captivating as fuck and suddenly author -san decide to step on your face with harmoured knight sole , if not, i recommend to read ubel blatt , you will surely have the most amazing training day at the gym of your life and become the strongest of the neighbourhood

So basically the first 60 chapters are interesting , his vengance is nuanced between duty , honour , and the best decision to take for the citizen ,sometimes you feel like , he is the bad guy , but he has any right to do what he is doing ... , it’s a good dark fantasy .

Then come the 100 last chapter, author-san just said fuck off , the story ? Let’s put time skip again and again , add new characters to have new fight again and again , redesigning old minor characters so that you can’t recognize them and it’s not their fucking german name with 4 time the same letter in it who’s gonna help you remember.
But i guess he need to sell it to not be axed , so here is coming the naked woman , unlucky for him i wasn’t down bad , strangely enough it was during these 100 chapters that the art became incredibly good

To synthethize it for people who don’t wanna read it :

70 chapter : good dark fantasy manga
100 other : an hentai with endless number of fights like one of those extended one piece episode fighting sbires .

I binged this manga over the last few days after having it on my PTR list for way too long. Because of that, I can offer you a review that is not shrouded by nostalgia or anger at hiatuses. It was running a whopping 15 years after all.

Art: 6

Nothing groundbreaking but pleasant to look at. Character designs are though out and make named characters easily distinguishable, though faces sometimes look weird and deformed. There was a little bit of inconsistency with some frames having obviously put tremendous effort into them while others being done more 'efficiently' (eg. no background, shading, etc). My biggest beef ... with the art is battle scenes, not to be confused with fight scenes which were done very well. Battle scenes were a mess. Half the time you have no idea what is exploding, where a shot is coming from or going towards, or simply what are you even looking at. This makes for a fairly chaotic experience and will force you to pause at frames very often just to figure out what's going on.

Character: 6.5

I really liked the main character even though he's total Gary Stu. His motivations make sense and are consistent, his character changes ever so slightly with how he is influenced by the progress on his quest and new friends joining him. Supporting cast is mostly made up of standard archetypes, so I'm not gonna expand on them. Villains were kind of a mixed bad. Some of them were written amazingly, with great motivations and gray personality, while others (especially the minor and nameless ones) were just cartoonishly evil for the sake of being evil.

Story: 6.5

The story set up a very interesting premise and managed to keep its dark tones all the way until the end. The later part of the story felt a little bit rushed but was enjoyable regardless and managed to deliver a fairly satisfactory conclusion to itself at the end. The main problem I had with the story is how convenient everything was. There is always someone coming to rescue the main cast, or when they do lose there are very little consequences to it. The most convenient of all is how almost every character immediately accepted Köinzell's side of 'the truth'.

Enjoyment: 8

I'm a sucker for dark fantasies, so despite my previous complaints, I still enjoyed this series very much. Though the fluency of going through chapters was occasionally disrupted by messy battle scenes, it still allowed for a decent immersion and an enjoyable experience. There was a plethora of hype and badass moments, and I can't really remember getting bored at any part, even when exposition was being delivered.

Overall: 7

If you like the dark fantasy genre, then this is definitely worth your time. This series has both very original parts and very cliche parts, so your enjoyment will be standing on whether you like these tropes or not. If you are a fan of hype fights, MC being a badass, and the dark side of people being portrayed without kiddy gloves on, then this is definitely the series for you. Just don't expect to have your mind blown and enjoy the ride.

A teenage Berserk. Revenge story with violence, tits, and dark fantasy, but dragged down by too many shounen cliches.

I was at my local Barnes & Noble when the volume 1's cover caught my eye. It didn't have an attractive girl wearing "modest" clothing on the front like the others. No, right on the cover was the face of a mean looking elf. With wild hair style, red eyes, and a scarred eye. "The author is trying to make him look badass," I thought. There was a parental advisory warning. It was even shrink wrapped. Okay, it had my curiosity.

So I read the description. It's ... a revenge story. A lone warrior is set out to kill the--wait, what? The seven heroes? Now the manga had my interest. A revenge story with tits, violence, and under the guise of dark fantasy. Yes. I'll buy one copy please.

I had been itching for something new since I stopped reading Berserk. They were still on the boat when I left, but I remember Berserk vividly. It was very grim and depressing. A world of monsters and violence. Yet, you had a lone hero who was only human, but he was powerful enough to fight back. I wanted a new Berserk. I wanted a new Guts I could root for.

But no. Ubell Blatt turned out to be somewhat above average but falls under too many shonen, anime cliches. I stopped around volume 4. I did enjoy it, but it's not worth sinking anymore money into. The plot--while interesting enough--simply isn't so gripping that I'd throw another $20 at.

The hero has a somewhat unique design. He's a teenage elf with wild hair and a scar. But he falls into the all-powerful main character cliche. He's the power fantasy of a teenage male hero who can beat everything in his path. It leaves little room for suspense. His revenge motivation is good, though. I do want him to succeed, but it would've been a lot more interesting if he weren't so overpowered. He has the Afro Samurai problem. Neat idea, but the story sinks under the weight of an overpowered hero which leaves you bored. I couldn't watch Afro Samurai the second time without being bored to death. Can I please have a main character that earns their skill and isn't some gifted child genius?

I will say it's refreshing to actually see the main character be confident enough to have sex with women. I'm sick of teenage male heroes that have a nose bleed in front of any girls that look their way.

The artwork is okay. It's nothing special like Berserk or One Punch Man, whose art is particularly impressive. It's not bad. Just serviceable. The author has horrible same-face syndrome. The characters are either realistically drawn grown men or they're kids with anime face. The anime faced characters all look the same. Both guys and girls. It not only annoys me that all the important characters are teenagers when this supposed to be darker, more mature story but they also all have the same goddamn face. All the girls. All the guys.

You can also tell what the author is into. I'm talking fetishes. There are a lot of loli's and young girls. Even the boys are drawn very young which makes me wonder if the author has an obsession with youth.

Now, I said I was down for tits, violence, and dark fantasy, but that doesn't mean I don't want an engaging plot, a deep story, or interesting characters either. Ubel Blatt doesn't really have any of that. It has it here and there to keep my going but not enough. The revenge of revealing the seven heroes' past is decently gripping. The characters are interesting enough. There are some moments that were meant to be "dark" and "shocking" but it mostly comes off as juvenile. I'm not saying it should be Berserk. You can take the best qualities of another story and make it your own.

The first volume was decently interesting. Lots of action, monsters, magic, tits--great. Reminded me of Berserk. I hoped it kept up, but not really. Once the story found its pace it started devolving into a typical shounen. How many times have you heard "he's using THAT technique." Yeah, I'm talking about THAT kind of cliche.

Even the main character's "rival" is another gifted teenager. If you know anything about swordplay--hell, any skill at all--that it takes years to hone your technique. Whether its physical or mental, it takes A LOT of effort to even be decent at anything so it really takes me out of the story when I see another big eyed character that's beating grown men and women in their 30's or 40's. I can get behind one or two skilled teenagers but not a whole cast.

Overall, Ubell Blatt is a teenage Berserk. The main character is overpowered. The side characters are shallow and all look the same. The revenge plot is engaging enough, but not worth your money. The art is okay. It could've been a lot better if the author didn't let so many of his pet fetishes come through in the writing. There's even a bath scene with two nake girls fighting with swords. Come on.

Story
-One of the true heroes that have been murdered were miracously alive by the power of a fairy..and he is set on taking revenge at the seven heroes/traitors. While he is doing so he is also changing the era of chaos that the seven heroes/traitors made.
By the way the six of the seven heroes were abusing their power/money/land that the emperor
gave them that led to this era of chaos.

Art
- the art is outstanding it is by far the most suited art for a shounen war type of manga. The artist does not leave any information about the art wrong.

Character
- I simply love Koinzell(Ascheriit) because ... of his bravery/rightousness/kindness and strength. I also love his companions and the way the author describes the people as meek and weak.

Enjoyment
- I really enjoyed this series and wish it to be animated. You will not get bored by the story and I'm sure you will also get addicted by it just like me.

Overall
-Thi is siimply the best war/fighting/depressing/realistic/strategy/bravery/traitor/murder/blood and heroes' story i have ever read.It portrays heroes who have been murder by their own allies, and these traitors received the heroes achievement and decived the whole world that they are the heroes.
I highly recommend this to anyone who can understand feelings and emotions

A flawed Magnus Opus.

Verdict: read if you have time | If you are a fan of the author it's a must read.

If you are familiar with the author, Etorouji Shiono, you would know his usual theme: stupid action, androgynous male and wacky characters. Ubel Blatt has all of that, but instead of a comedy, short burst of inspiration that the author worked on after a few rounds of wank and got bored, he decided to hold down the pedal a little this time. That's Ubel Blatt.
I'll quickly skip through the art, Ubel Blatt was beautifully drawn. The author polished his style from previous works and ... poured them into Ubel Blatt. His art style is rather unique, a rarity in today's world of art factory.
Ubel Blatt has a surprisingly strong basic plot for an author with 15 series in his name, all ended within a few volumes. The main character has very strong and relatable motivation. His decisions however were quite arbitrary, as the author waffled about for 15 god damn years, and you can even sense the deviation in tone as the story progressed as he changed magazine, editor, favourite girl at the soapland, porn genre and smartphone. Just about the same amount of time as the main character got lost in the woods. It is a basic revenge plot that spirals out of control and escalates into a larger conflict. If you binge it, it might feel a little rushed, with many characters being introduced briefly before being killed off or disappearing to do something else and never seem to be that important. I would remind you again that some gap between chapters lasted a few years, enough time for the unfortunate readers to re-read it a few times. That's not to say the side characters are not interesting or unimportant. They all have a certain impact on the plot but not always the overall picture. They have ample character development, sometimes more than the main character, for better or worse, as if the author took 2 years to build the subplot.

Jokes about 15 asides, there's something going on with Ubel Blatt plot that makes it hard to put down. The story is simple, straight forward with little intrigue and importantly, the reader does not need to read between the lines to follow. It might be simplistic, even shallow, but somehow, the passion of the characters to me really comes across. The main character's quest for revenge feels very personal while the supporting cast's determination to follow through with their beliefs were also given ample amount of pages. The thing about Shiono is he has done so much gag stuff that he can capture the flow of the story very well, telling it without being too wordy nor too little exposition. The charm is the action after all, and he did that with expertise, no surprise from his backlog of gag action works. The magic might be intensity and passion, which is strange because the main character is rather the opposite, cold and collected. It's not non-stop action, there are many talkative moments as well, but the authors dish them out with mastery, never flooding the reader with information. While it merely provides the background for the action, as you would forget all about them after you finish the chapter, they always provide the stake for the next fight. You seldom stop and think: why do they have to fight?

For me, this is why this is his magnum opus, even if its ending is very rushed and disappointing, much like the author's recent orgasm I suspect. To me, a piece of entertainment either makes me feel, or numb my senses. This is one of those that made me feel. I can always sympathise with the characters' struggle, even if they are a little cliche. I, like many, were disappointed that the author lost interest half way through the story and limped towards the finish.
A magnum opus in the pile low brow plastic wrapper might still be trash, but to me it is fun and beautiful in its own way, like a rabid rodent letting out a beautiful death rattle.

P/S:
Coming back to Ubel Blatt every few years had been a little guilty pleasure of mine. On this trip, it reminded me of why the shallow starting plot of “hero betrayed” in recent fantasy/isekai instant noodle comics irks me so much. Ubel Blatt handled that plot straightforwardly with all of the intensity and, more importantly, creating a somewhat actual moral dilemma about revenge. It doesn’t hit you on the head about why revenge is bad, nor did it indulge in “revenge porn”. Far from it. Every kill in Ubel Blatt was a struggle and full of sorrow and regret. These “revenge” plots do not have to be surface level nor appealing within 10 minutes. The villain does not have to be so straightforwardly evil. They can be selfish, lustful and prideful, yet as a reader, you can still sympathise with what they had become. It’s a trope for them to be so, because revenge is something quite personal and destructive not just to those around but also to themselves. That’s because the core emotional struggle of revenge is that you know revenge won’t make anything better, it can only make things worse, but there are things that are forgivable and things that just can’t be. It’s the agony of being alive, carrying all of that emotional weight.

How can the author add emotional weight to the main character being abandoned by his “classmates” as they got lost in another world? You have to have trust before betrayal. If someone you don’t trust or don’t like leaves you behind, that’s not betrayal, that’s “I’m going to live bitch”. It would leave no impact on the story, at all. Ideally, the betrayer should embody something like classism or cowardice, and it should be unexpected. It doesn’t have to happen “in real time” either. Ubel Blatt didn’t beat around the bush too much on the betrayal plotline, but it dedicated an entire first act to the mystery and not revealing its hand too quickly. Once it was revealed, it had more impact as you witnessed the world, the consequence and the betrayed man. It makes everything have so much more weight by treating the traitors as plot development and not a minor detail. Now, if the story is not about betrayal then don’t even bother with it. Get revenge out of the story entirely.

If a mangaka whose expertise is androgynous male, cross-dressing, magical girl can write such a compelling but simple plot, almost on a whim, there’s no excuse for writers and damn editors who keep on printing trashy copy paste web novels.

Ubell Blatt is super dumb, the edgiest shittiest schlock.
I love it.


Story - 4
The story is a pretty standard revenge plot, give the royalties to Monsieur Dumas.

In a generic fantasy kingdom with a name I can't pronounce, fourteen heroes set out to defeat the evil magitech kingdom, whsoe name I also cannot pronounce. Exact details are scarce (until the big flashback after the introductory arc), but common knowledge holds that three died along the way, and four betrayed their comrades, lead by the Sword Saint Ascheritt. The evil was vanquished, and the seven surviving heroes return home to fucking bank off of that whole conquering heroes ... thing.

Twenty years later, a mysterious elfin shota (waif works too I guess) called Koinzell appears in the besieged and lawless frontier of the previously mentioned generic fantasy kingdom. He's strong, fast, an incredible (ly violent) swordsman, and he seems incredibly angry at both the self proclaimed "Four Betrayers" who are attacking the frontier, and the Seven Heroes who saved the kingdom years ago.

Art - 7
The action is pretty good. It isn't particularly weighty, and the gore isn't super extreme, so I'd say 5 out of 10 Miura's.

Character designs are quite good, although in each flashback Ascheritt looks more and more like he's under a little kid than the teen he was originally stated to be.

Backgrounds are alright.

As a seinen manga, there's obligatory tits and heavily censored sex scenes, and they're alright. I thought it was super hot in 2010, but I'd really recommend going for actual hentai instead.

Characters - 4

Koinzell is a pretty generic angry determined revenge type.

Ato (who is antagonist for about five seconds in the introductory act, and Koinzell's sidekick/minion/sort of protege for the rest of series) is a tomboy princess. Her and Koinzell are pretty cute together, and she manages to stay relevant later on, so that's better than some series?

The side characters are also pretty generic. Off the top of my head, only not-Armstrong stood out at all.

The villains are RIDICULOUSLY EVIL. In a hundred plus chapters, only two of them have gotten any real development at all beyond "I was jealous/greedy/raised by a racist/other reason that doesn't justify being a backstabbing murder at all".

One of the four betrayers has a grandkid who works for one of the seven heroes, and he's shown up a bit. Again, quite generic.

Nothing here seemed too terrible, but noting is that amazing.

Enjoyment - 7
Knock-off Berserk with a shota shonen is roughly how I'd describe this show. I liked the EVIL villains, the ridiculously bullshit prowess of the protagonist that gets counterbalanced by him cosntantly getting the shit kicked out of him (not in any ways that really matter, but eh), and the unpronounceable names of the generic but cool setting, with dragon ships and evil magitech and dragons and SWORD MAGIC.

If you want a dark, violent, and honestly pretty immature revenge fantasy, this is the manga for you

Please do not compare this with Berserk. This is at most a 6/10 manga filled with clichés, plot holes, and one dimensional characters. The story certainly has potential, but the lack of depth in every aspect has killed it almost entirely. The world is poorly structured, the storytelling all over the place, and the outfit is silly. Even the sex doesn't make sense. The whole thing just feels like a shounen artist trying too hard to create an adult manga. The characters are so flat and shallow that I simply do not care one bit about them at all. Got so bored that I simply ... stopped reading.

Looking for a dark fantasy adventure with a lot of action with vengeance and betrayal the theme? This is pretty it, Ubel Blatt is what I like to call "baby Berserk", it has all the gore, nudity, and violence that you would want in a dark fantasy. The action is good, the story concept is simple and the execution is alright.

Right from the beginning the manga is more about local interactions and conflicts rather than global. They did this well by hyping each antagonist per arc. The background stories are easy to understand as well as the main character's conflict with each of them. ... I think if they had continued with this pattern I would have given them a higher score.

Right around when the manga got a hiatus (2/3s were completed), it came back very weak. Instead of focusing on local interactions such as character building for each antagonist arc, it kept on with this big war (global) and scrapped away any character writing.

This brings me to the next point, the characters. Frankly speaking the main character is pretty unique. I felt like the number of "good guys" could've been reduced. Most of them made this manga into more shounen than seinen.

The antagonist also initially had a good run with their writing, then the final antagonist lost all the personality that the readers would want to sympthazie with (this is after the hiatus) and the story went downhill. In fact I don't think even the final antagonist had any dialogue, he was just a character.

One thing I wanted to learn more were the three other companions with Konzell, I felt like their story was missing in all of this.

The art was so-so for me. I actually didn't like the drawing quite honestly.

Anyways this manga actually made me think about Tate no Yuusha, so if you are into betrayals and vengeance this is it.

Does any dark fantasy manga that starts well and continues well even exist?

All of my favourite stories either stop getting published, or the intense atmosphere just vaporizes like water later on - which is the case of Übel Blatt. The beginning is just perfect. Am I bad person if the main reasons for me to enjoy it were all the despair, twisted personalities and raw violence?

When I talk about the characters, I should highlight the difference between now and then. I loved that main hero who just walked through the starting story with nothing to lose and everything to destroy. I even understand why some ... people compared it to Berserk.

But it's just sad that it's similar to Berserk even in that other way. Later on, the characters with their original motivations, which made them very distinctive, just blend in, because the plot gets too involved with fairies and sh*t... And you just lose track, who is who - you're glad that at least you rememember which faces are „good“ and „evil“, and that is just something the heroes from the beginning do not deserve.

So, should you read it? Yes, if you want to enjoy few volumes of nicely executed violence, sword fights, disgusting villains, with no promise of FINISHING the plot the same way it started. But honestly, who does that in year 2015? If you find out, let me know, I'll run to buy that manga.

For the sake of initial quality and possible future good closure, I will try to ignore the present and let my rating reflect those parts that I really enjoyed.

This one of the manga, in which you don't expect to be so good, until you get into a few chapters, then you start to binge reading it. I promised myself to read this as soon as possible when i bookmarked it, but its hard when you have hundreds of manga bookmarked, but if i didn't choose to read this i wouldn't be writing this review. This manga is full of emotion, betrayal, sex, gorgeous art and characters and epic battles.

this story is really complex, as the story itself is wrapped in lies with the story of the seven heroes and the four lances of ... betrayal. sometimes it made me want to say to those people that the seven heroes are the real evil and killed the four who were the real heroes. This story appealed to me because of the plot. I haven't heard of a story like this, so i consider this story a unique one because it caught me off guard with its plot twists. The pacing's alright, some bits were kinda out of place, traversing to different side characters and the empire people, away from the main character. currently i haven't read all the chapters so i can't say the ending is satisfying, but its making me wanting more.

art
i enjoy the art because the characters are pretty detailed and well drawn. the sword fights and the battle of battleships are pretty epic, to the every last detail. i think this art style suits this manga because it has some dark topics about death and betrayal, but not too harsh for the eyes and has a gentle tone. I found the main character's design appealing because he looks unique with his hair, the other character designs were decent, but may need some improvements. their designs matched their personalities.some of the characters were a little similar looking, but mostly unique. a few times i get confused between some characters, but it didn't affect how i felt about this manga.

Feels like he hasn't really gotten stronger, but we'll have to see when the story progresses.

This manga has been the biggest let down so far in my comic reading journey. This shit is BORING.
I have expected an entirely different story looking at the art and covers, that part is on me, but I was ready to give this a try, I really was, but after 60 chapters where literally nothing happens except for fighting, I gave myself the indulgence of letting go, because for sure I wasn't reading another 60 chapters of the same thing over and over. The MC design is really cool, I'd wager the whole story was written just because the author had a really cool brooding ... elf idea, because that's about it when it comes to what this has to offer.

The action scenes are too chaotic to care what happens in them, but the character designs and style is pretty unique and pleasant to look at.

Story - 4
The twist is revealed at the very beginning of the manga so there's no suspense, I would much prefer if the author just made the manga longer and let us experience the MCs past with him instead of just pure exposition to past events. If you're gonna do this when your characters are weak, I'm not gonna care. Also everything always is going according to MCs plan somehow even if it doesn't, nobody ever dies or is truly unhappy except the antagonists, I ended up probably empathizing with them more.

Characters - 2
Boy howdy, are the characters lacking. The MC literally does nothing except fighting, maybe hiding from fighting sometimes. Fighting is his only character trait, it always was and most of the side characters are either the same or don't have any traits at all. If you replaced all of them with the same person, there wouldn't be a difference.
One point for good antagonists.

Enjoyment - 4
Basically I was forcing myself to read this, because I thought there would be so kind of payoff somewhere, but even when the main protags are weak or damaged, they're absolutely fine in the next chapter. Hell, the MC says he has a "weak body" one second, but then completely blasts his opponent the next. It's just the same fighting scenes over and over. The world is really interesting and well drawn - flying wolves? Horned tigers? Hell yeah. Pity there's no addressing all of that except for the setting of the upcoming fight.
Also, I don't feel like this is seinen, this would be good if it had the budget of shonen jump or something.

Overall - 4
It was just outrageously boring. Maybe I would like it better if I was younger, but there's nothing unique about it. I disliked some mangas in the past but have fond memories with them, because they were original, like Elfen Lied. They made me care somehow, this doesn't.
Also minus points for the very weird sexualization, it feels really out of place and I'm not exactly comfortable suddenly seeing a very detailed drawing of a character that looks like a minor and then she gets a suit in which her breasts are just barely covered, for FIGHTING.

I really enjoyed my time reading Ubel Blatt. I think if someone goes into it expecting a dramatic masterpiece - they could rate it far lower than I did. However, if you go into it expecting an interesting story, fantastic artwork, and fast paced action it will nail all of those marks. I found the paneling easy to follow, the characters generally likeable if many stay a bit one-dimensional, and some truly wonderfully drawn and dynamic art. I often find flashbacks a bit annoying in manga, but this story does a good job of keeping it informative but brief - allowing the main story to ... take center stage.

I can see some people wishing for a greater depth in the characters. I do not personally mind the level of exploration we got throughout the series. I didn't find the fanservice or sexuality injected into the series to add anything, but rather detract from it often. This element of the series does tone down a lot by about the half-way point though now and again it pops up. In the beginning it was a pretty big negative of the series resulting in a few eyerolls of the heavy-handed quality of it. There are also a few time-jumps in here that did not feel out of place to me, but I could see bothering a few people. Given how long it took for the mangaka to get this story to the finish line due to moving publications, I think a lot of these time-skips are due to that.

I see a frequent complaint from a lot of people saying that the end to the series is disappointing, I felt it matched fine with the rest of the series. I think a much more valid complaint is that this shifts from a Seinen to a Shounen concept mostly, where the characters powering up and transformations become a bit more pivotal. However, the main character is in and of himself built around a similar concept from the start - so similarly it did not feel out of place to me.
