They have a really interesting premise of this anime.

Sudo Hikaru is the character to pay attention the most with his intellect and skills. It also has this no-nonsense storytelling vibe without light comedy. Character and human behavior/emotions seems to also be something to pay attention to.

Animation quality looks okay I guess, nothing extraordinary yet but it's the premise of the show that has my interest.

Mangaka Kyuuri Yamada's series definitely stands out in quite the uniqueness, and Madhouse is back on the Sonny Boy experimental phase.

Aile The Shota's OP has a feel and vibe to it, and I'm digging it.  GReeeeN's soothing ED is also the same.

A mother's request for genome editing, it was part of a Humanoid experiment that if successful, the funds acquired would help her son, though at the expense of her neural net being copied.

The story of a world filled with Humanoids that make up 1% of the population, having a backup copy of the brain is illegal. And that's the case with doctor Hikaru Sudo with his nurse assistant Risa Higuchi, they have a specialized job in dealing with humanoids and humans who've grown to come part of the multiverse. Outside, Hikaru bases on the alias of the illegal humanoid doctor Moggadeet, and tends to a case of a humanoid couple, whom the wife has an abnormality. As suspected, it's the backup that causes them to go crazy, which results in a limited time of his wife being alive from a virus infection when the exchange was being done. Their adopted human daughter clearing up the situation on why personalized copies make a bad day go worse, it's a legit concern, though curing her mother will require approval from the wife partially losing her memories to perform a clean slate.

Hikaru taking a detour from his clinic to go to see his mother locked up in prison, it's all for his sake when he was young and not feeling well. Soon, it's time to do the reset, and whether or not Risa likes it or not, it's clear that even if they violated the copying law, the brain formatting surgery has to be performed to succession before the clean backup can be done. The wife, risking her identity for a complete memory loss, she opted not to go ahead with the procedure, which after some time, the virus has taken its toll on her, and the backup done then and there. Despite worries that the wife would not end up the same as before, they're at least glad that she's still alive.

This Humanoid Intelligence Duplication Law posed to resolve the problems of the AI Humanoids, it's a minimum 30-year imprisonment sentence, and that's what Hikaru's mother got to remain in prison for the rest of her life.

A story about the advancement of technology, this is indeed a niche, and something that I feel, will be a dark horse of the season.

I have a hunch that this series will be heavy drama in the latter episodes. And, just the first episode, it proved to me that my hunch was not wrong at all.

I really like the premise of this anime and how it immerses into the AI world. The characters are nice as well and I dig the animation. This anime let me think of Detroit Become Human

Hikaru & Risa are like the doctors for the AI patients and Risa cares a lot about Hikaru. Man the first episode in and I almost thought the family was gonna lose the mother, which was gonna be heartbreaking, but she basically got reset and then she got her back-up data. Hikaru still visits his mother in the prison to this day, looks like she got arrested for something illegal. The child seemed nice and caring, she even did groceries for her sick mother, which is awesome. I did like how the AI shows emotions.

Animation quality is nice, nothing too major.

Madhouse will forever be one of my fave studios. I can always expect a good production quality.

The themes presented are really deep and make you think once you start giving them some thought.

Direction over the pacing and presentation of info is top notch, it nicely set up some mysteries like his mother's copy and what may have happened with it.

Also maybe we will hear some details about his old workplace next time.

Overall I will be sticking to the end with this.

The premise is definitely interesting, and this seems like more of an experimental story that Madhouse is taking on. This one feels very grim and serious, with only a bit of comedy at times. The designs and animation look quite bland, with some decent art here and there, and I do feel that this well be a show that tackles human emotions and futuristic/modern technology, perhaps getting into some darker subject matter. I suppose this will be a show to keep an eye on, though it hasn't sold me yet.

I feel like the crime angle doesn't make sense. Why copy someone's brain to commit crimes in a new body (that's probably expensive as hell) instead of just convincing some normal thug to do it for a fraction of the price or even making a brand new AI more tailored towards following orders and committing crimes. Like, creating AI isn't rare in this world. With the numbers given we can presume theres roughly 1 billion humanoids so this shit is extremely widespread. Going through the cost, risk and effort to copy someone to commit a crime just doesn't seem rational.

This episodes plot was pretty interesting. I wonder if they will get into why they made a billion humanoids. Government surveillance is lower than I'd expect.

A solid opening episode that introduces the basics of how the world works and the problems humanity face with a revolutionary tecnology. The drama will be the basis of the story with some mystery, i think.

P.S. The memory backup concept reminded me a bit of what was shown in the anime Kaiba

Maybe it's all about perspective, but I would say they did lose her, what they restored wasn't "her" it was a copy of her, and even if it's identical, it can't be the original consciousness, because it lacks any memory beyond the time she was backed up. The mother chose to stop the doctor from pressing the button and beginning the "procedure" because she realized in that instant that pressing the button would kill her, so she chose to live out her remaining time until the virus completely corrupted her and she stopped functioning.

I really enjoyed this episode, it's a promising start. The themes of consciousness with the humanoid mother who was corrupted by a virus was really interesting. I've always been bothered by time travel movies where people have no concern about changing time in a way that causes their current self to not exist, because this wouldn't be any different than dying. This correctly showed that the mother didn't realize until the moment he was about to press the button that this would essentially be killing her, it's not "losing a week of memories" it's the death of the current consciousness. So, that's why she chooses to live out the rest of her remaining time until she completely deteriorates.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

This could be so interesting, actually exploring the question what it means to be and to have a self ... just like in the good old scifi/cyberpunk days. But judging from this episode alone, I fear there won't be much of an exploration, just a dumb one-sided finger-wagging orgy from start to finish.

Oh yes, please give me all the self-righteous wanky moralising you got!

I was hoping for something like Pantheon...but it turned out to be quite simple. Simple character designs, simple dialogues, everting is overexplained despite being really easy to get, not to mention the supposedly futuristic world looking more like retrofuturism. Also the MC is a cheap knock-off of Black Jack.
The only interesting things here are the themes and the moral dilemmas.

What?! But they already went way too strong with the emo crap while fucking all sense out of the window. Dr Holier-than-though obviously pushed them to let her die once. For what? For fucking lols, because more drama.

(I mean, it's not like there was a slightly better way to go about it, say, one that would minimise the "personality loss" ... like, keeping the time between backup and restoration as short as possible. Except there was. The mc was such a fucking wanker. He almost felt like what a very dumb person would expect from James T. Kirk mating with Gregory House. Damn, I SOOO wish him some character development; I wouldn't even mind if it involves punching the stupid out of him. Seriously, what a wanker.)

True, if only there was a bit more "discussion" about it, like, some real exploration of the topic. This episode was just like: Yea, so, you see, I'm Dr Hugedick, and you did a really bad thing which I personally don't like, and I'm not even gonna try to get behind your silly reasoning, fucking idiots, and just gonna tell you in no uncertain terms that you, indeed, did do that really bad thing. And also I'm always right, and I'm gonna show you as hard as I can. This' got nothing to do with my ego or me projecting or anything. Just doing my job. Now suffer, bitches!

How ironic that we get an anime that deals with A.I when we are on the cusp of seeing emerging A.I. technologies. I like the premise of the no so distant future of humans and humanoids living together.  I guess in future episodes we will learn the details on why Hikaru's mom ended up in prison for copying A.I. personalities while he continues to search for his real mom that he grew up with.

Yeah, it was really interesting seeing how she changed, and the small details that she didn't remember, i.e. the cream in the scrambled eggs. I wish they would explain why that small detail was not retained in her backup data.

Moreover, I'm curious if this new "Mama" is a similar dynamic to what it would be like for one of your family members to go through dementia or Alzheimers. It would be hard if they lost small memories that were significant to your relationship.

Yeahhhhhh, I wasnt a huge fan of the MC doctor, and espcially not his assistant - she was kind of annoying. Im hoping they will develop his character more, and make him a bit more believable.

Outside of that, i really enjoyed the premise; the philosophical ideas they are toying with; and the overall mystery/storyline. Ill definitely keep watching it for those things alone!

Don't think I can get into this. The humanoids don't make a whole lot of sense. They appear to be entirely biological except for the brain and skull. Why not just make the brain and skull biological too?... they also inherit things like DNA damage. Why can't the DNA damage be reversed or stopped? If society has the capability to create completely biological bodies with custom DNA etc why isn't the general populace immortal? There are so many holes in this world that it's rather unwatchable.

We could try to argue that this society just can't work with the brain, hence the artificial one. Humanoids and humans would both be susceptible to aging in the brain then. I don't buy it though... especially when there are already methods for growing brains brains today : |.

There's also a lot of implications about biological beings and mechanical beings... like the implant. It's heavily implied that humanoids are not biological... they also imply this with the checkup. There was also a question about hunger in humanoids and the doctor said "dunno" when it's clear that humanoids actually get their energy from food like humans do... :|. How can a character that is so stupid be a doctor?

I'd sooner believe a half-baked "magic in'nit" explanation than this.

This world is garbo. Sorry.

The cream in the scrambled eggs was a great little detail, it's a subtle way to show that the mom who was "restored" never thought to add the cream, because she never experienced whatever moment led her post-backup self to think of trying cream in the scrambled eggs. It's not that this isn't the "real" mother any more, because being a perfect copy wouldn't make her inauthentic in that regard, it's just only her up until the point of backup. So, I think the family understands that the mother who slowly deteriorated until she was non-functional, actually died.

Yeah seriously 〣( ºΔº )〣 just imagine what that would do to a kid. Your mom, who had been unchanging until a month ago, died, but then came back, nearly the same, but slightly different. It would make you question everything, and would probably take a long time to adjust to normalcy again.

  • This is the show I expect the most in this season. But I'm not sure if it's really worth anime adaptation like "Tengoku Daimakyou" in previous season.
  • Since I'm not a big fan of the sequel "Red Queen", I had a bad hunch from the short introduction part. But other than that, the episode followed the source material pretty well. Actually, it might have been better to add some anime original effect or/and art in the show.
  • It seems the pace will be an episode for a chapter basis, for now.
  • As for this episode, the idea is similar to thought experiment "swamp man".

I think the hard lesson here is that the person restored from the back-up simultaneously is and isn't her mother, and that's what made the girl emotional.

I really like how the anime tackle about the mystery about the doctor's mother straight on since the beginning,
I think it makes the anime more engaging and interesting instead of just tacking episodic cases of AI and robots

however, (not really spoiler)
