Adult Swim announced two new seasons for the FLCL anime series on Thursday—titled FLCL: Grunge and FLCL: Shoegaze. The programming block also revealed the main staff and teaser visuals for the new seasons (pictured). The announcement is commemorating Toonami's 25th anniversary.
Hitoshi Takekiyo (Houkago Midnighters, Appleseed XIII episode director) is helming FLCL: Grunge at the Fukuoka-based CG animation studio MontBlanc Pictures. The season is scheduled for a 2023 premiere.
Yutaka Uemura (FLCL: Alternative, Youjo Senki) is directing FLCL: Shoegaze at Production I.G and Nut. Both seasons are currently in production.
Jason DeMarco, creative director of Toonami and senior vice president of action and anime for Warner Bros. Animation, is serving as the executive producer for both seasons, while Production I.G USA's president Maki Terashima-Furuta (FLCL Progressive, Kaizoku Oujo) is credited as the producer.
FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative, the two-part film sequel to the original series, premiered in Japan in September 2018. Toonami aired the English dub of FLCL Progressive in June 2018, followed by FLCL Alternative in September that year—each as a six-episode television series.
Kazuya Tsurumaki, the original creator of the franchise, supervised the sequel film project. Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) served as the chief director, with Hideto Iwai penning the script, and Kiyotaka Oshiyama (Space☆Dandy) in charge of the mechanical design.
The original FLCL original video anime produced by Gainax and Production I.G. shipped in six episodes from April 2000 to March 2001. Gainax sold the original property rights to the series to Production I.G in 2015. Synch-Point originally released the anime on DVD in January 2007. Funimation reacquired the series in January 2010 and released it on home video in February 2011.
Synopsis (FLCL)
Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn't stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left.
Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane existence is on the verge of being changed forever: enter Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, bass guitar-wielding, pink-haired psychopath whose first encounter with Naota leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn on his head. Though all he wants is some peace and quiet, when Haruko takes up residence at his parents' home, Naota finds himself dragged into the heart of the greatest battle for supremacy that Earth—and quite possibly the entire universe—has ever seen. Absolutely stoked for the return of yet another 2 seasons of the goat FLCL. While progressive and alternative weren't too impressive, I have nothing but high hopes for these 2. We're once again covering musical genres and I think Grunge and Shoegaze fit perfectly into the chaotic universe of FLCL. Not to mention the animation looks wild, very cool use of CGI in the teaser. I cannot wait for more songs by the pillows and more crazy shenanigans with Haruko.
well, I haven’t seen either of the two other new sequels of FLCL since I heard they were bad but guess I should check them out before this airs as well
I'm okay with the style but can Adult Swim stop resuscitating this corpse? Especially after Gainax backstabbed Tsurumaki. We talk about treating the anime industry better, YET???
the sequel NOBODY wanted was already a horrible insult, yet they want more. who is this made for?
the fans of the classic hated it. newcomers didn't care. are they doing this out of spite?
DAMN I RATHER HAVE COVID THAN SEEING THIS ANIME ANNOUNCE. OH MY FUCKING GOD. YOU EITHER HAVE THE SERIES DONE BY THE ORIGINAL CREATOR OR DON'T LET SOMEONE CREATED BY SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE SERIES. THIS IS IS LIKE SEEING OSAMA BIN LADIN GETTING AWAY OF MURDER

The art is Ex-Arm tier, in fact I think it's even worse than Ex-Arm as Ex-Arm was just made by staff that were beginners in anime creation, while this was made by pros in anime and it's so much worse looking.
I can't wait! I really liked the sequels of original and the original of course. I love the way FLCL represents adolescence life and makes you understand that maturity is not a curse, but a state , just like adolescence, it's not about being someone somewhere it's about how you're becoming someone somewhere. I just simply love that, and that was the message for both the original and the sequels.
Don't pay too much attention to people comparing a 20 years old s1 with their 20 years later sequels because the nature of the series is talking about adolescence and early adulthood in the moment of the release. What I mean is the show goes for the adolescents that live now and can relate to the problems depicted in the series. When I saw Alternative and progressive I was 16 and they related quite a lot with me, I saw the original 2 years prior and the message still stood to me but was not as relatable (still very good and fun don't get me wrong). In regards with animation, I found the sequels quite good in that regard. The soundtrack is still good as hell, like cmon it's the pillows with even more bangers hahahah!
I think that changes in animation style can be a good way of trying to innovate and create a much living and breathing way of action for Haruko. Still, time will tell if I am right or not. Until then i'll be waiting and you bet I'm going to rewatch them all, why? BECAUSE THEY SLAP. Godspeed to y'all.
I was going to paste in Mr. Krabs going "am I really going to defile this grave for money," but that's too much effort than is called for. I'm not even enthused to insult the project.
I'm honestly looking so much forward to FLCL : Shoegaze.
Like wheeeew, I'm curious to which songs and bands they're gonna use etc. Can't wait. Dunno about the animation tbh. But asa Shoegaze fan I'm like yey !
OG FLCL was great and I wasn't exactly thrilled with Progressive and Alternative (like many of us), but I do think the team is trying to take the story and franchise somewhere deeper if they adding two more installments. OG came with a beautiful mystery, at least we get to watch someone attempt to uncover it.
I didn't care much for Progressive or Alternative. So, I'm already not hyped. And, seeing Haruko in this new animation style doesn't fill me with any hope at all. I may end up checking these out, but I'm certainly not in a hurry.
"...Is your mother worried? Would you like us to assign someone to worry your mother?"
Why can’t they leave well enough alone? FLCL was amazing. Alternative/Progressive were decent at best. And the animation style just does not fit at all.
