THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Megumi has really come a long way although she still feels intimidated against some of the stronger competitors.

Erina is also fighting against some pretty tough odds in the competition. She's very fired up though. I must say, the competition really picked up this arc now that we have the heavy hitters showing their skills.

Ohhh shit, An amazing episode

Saiba VS Megumi
3 0
Erina VS Aldini
3 0

I don't know what else to say but this is really a tense episode. Too bad, Aldini lost to Nakiri even though that was close. At least Megumi tried her best to fight Asahi.

Damn barely any comments

Even though she lost, I’m so proud of how far my baby Megumi has come. She’s grown so much more confident after her travels and has really come into her own as a chef. Of course for plot reasons she and Aldini had to lose, but proud of them! Reveal of book master being Erina’s mother was quite obvious.

My one complaint with the episode was just how fast the shokugeki’s went by. We didn’t really have any time to see the dishes or analyse the prep. Guess that’ll probably be commonplace going forward as we finish out the series.

Lastly, I’m genuinely wondering when I’m supposed to stop enjoying the show? Heard lots of people say this arc is so bad and everything, but I’m still really really loving it despite everything.

Well much has been revealed in this episode. The book master was Erina's mother. If anything. This was also one of the viewers problems too. Because it is another Nakiri family problems. Though I can understand. Back then I would've loved to know Erina's mother honestly. Since she is the one that gave birth to the God Tongue Erina. Even if it annoys the hell out of the other people. Aside from that the Shokugeki matches were very fast and quick. And something else tells me that something changed along the way. Otherwise it has been a long time since I even remember the arc's chapter. Next episode I hope it is done well. Part of me says it is something that it better be done greatly on. Hopefully it is not messed up.

Why are they being so try hard to make Saiba look like the ultimate bad guy? Erina's dad didn't need to go super over the top to be a good bad guy. Sure I get gotta make a really tough bad guy for this season, since at this point we've been through so much, all the chefs have grown so much, so of course we need someone super strong. But idk, it just feels like it's trying too hard lol. Would've liked it better if this arc was more rivalry, than just this supposed bad guy being here.

Was kinda surprised that the bookmaster was Erina's mom though.

This was beyond rushed. I feel that the match of Megumi against the assassin Noir, the revelation that the Bookmaster is Erina's mother and the matches of Erina/Takumi - Asahi/Megumi (with Takumi and Megumi jobbing once again) could have been their own episodes. The final result was a mess.

Anyway, if I have to say something positive about the episode, is that the scene with Erina's mother falling in front of Souma and the rest due lack of nutrients was funny.

Wow so the bookmaster was actually Erina's mom, nice twist.

Erina's mom looks kinda weird in anime, she looked better in the manga imo.

Megumi vs that Chinese /Assassin Guy, Huan Zuiwang, end result Megumi wins......that went fast , too fast that there isn't much any drama in it.

Oh, ooh, the Bookmaster is Erina's mom......

Oh, wtta predicament , Megumi vs Saiba and erina vs Aldini ....

These new cooking methods are getting on my nerves. They're so random and weird.

I'm really not liking these fast paced scenes. The matches are way too short.

Was pretty surprised that Erina's mom was the book master though.

Let's take all of the bad parts of shounen, throw them together at fast pace with slideshow animation, and top it with cooking methods that make no sense whatsoever. That is what season 5 feels like to me. No more fun learning about cooking. No attempt at an interesting plot. No more time interacting with the characters. And thus, nothing of value remains.

damn yeah now they just rushed everything, not even bother to go to the technique used and more of a "dumb gimmick" of each noir member, one of the worst season for sure

I remember the good old days when we would actually see the cooking prep and learn about how the dish was prepared. The early days of this series felt almost.....educational in a sense. Now it's just become a super rushed train wreck where it feels like they're just trying to cram as many cooking matches as they can in 20 minutes (the rushing didn't even start with this season, but even the previous season didn't feel as rushed compared to this one and that one was pretty fast too).

All the major occurrences in this episode (Megumi vs. Asahi, Erina vs. Takumi, reveal of Bookmaster as Erina's mom) were all obvious and unsurprising. Souma stepped in at the end though to help deal with this Asahi mess.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Yeah, the plot armor is strong and the cooking is rushed for the sake of more things going on which makes the series lose it's detail and allure from not only seeing the final prepared dishes, but to help us understand the creativity, care, and expertise that go into the dishes. That and the fake intimidation with Noir and the fake drama with Nakiri's mom can't eat food because she's tasted everything. None of those are actual issues. This season would be far more interesting if they all just fought it out to be the personal chef for the WGO Bookmaster as if it was some 'actually' prestigious thing.

After this is over you can find me back in season 2, when cooking mattered in an anime about (already established and/or up and coming) chefs.

The anime removed Souma getting dunked in the trash can, Asahi kidnapping Erina to marry her, Asahi twagic bacstory and the aformentioned food chucking.

Removing the twagic backstory is key tho cuz it most likely means they wont adapt the fact that

Jesus christ, that episode just made drop my rating from a 5 to a 4... I didn't know it could get worse.

First off, the pacing is absolutely fucking horrible. They hyped up Megumi so much just for her to lose in 5 seconds? Like, even if she was going to lose, she should've at least put up a fight? I excused this for the last few eps because I assumed it was just so they can speed up the plot for whatever we're going to find out about Erina and her fam but even that was done horribly??? Security just casually ignoring 5+ chefs marching up to the Bookmaster to eavesdrop?? Wtf is that plot armour?

Also I don't know if I'm watching a fantasy shounen or an cooking battle show now. Literally all the scenes with cooking they just turn it into some absurd action scene with lighting bolts and bam the opponent wins??? I came here to see the process of some damn delicious food and for Souma to wreck everyone with his surprise cooking powers. Not this shit goddammit.

I usually don't care about ratings, if I enjoyed an anime then I simply enjoyed it and nothing else. But damn, I felt so compelled to write this out because damn, this is ATROCIOUS. Look how they massacred my Food Wars...

Oh well, I'm going to stick it out because I'm nearly at the end. I'm just going to switch off my brain and pretend it's some horrible comedy now... because that's what it is.

The only part I liked in this episode is Soma coming in at the end to shut Saiba up. Soma better get with Erina by the end.

Overall, this season is just straight garbage. The dishes and battle details are now clearly an afterthought. Superpowers and weird tools have made cooking unbearable. They did Tsukasa dirty last episode and now they did it to Megumi. Asashi is an annoying NTR villain. The animation is still limited and mostly just panning shots.

Season 4 was actually alright; seeing Erina turn into a brighter, happier person was nice. The elite 10 were also really cool and their arcs were meaningful. Meanwhile, this season deserves all the hate. The manga/anime really misses Morisaki Yuki.

Even the creators have given up on the show. Who cooks what and how? Which dish is superior and why? Who cares, get a still shot of a dish, some cheap elemental effects and call it a day.

While the last season was at least a bad season of an anime about cooking, this season is just some random trash show with incredibly laughable stakes in it.

Not to mention showing how Megumi and Takumi were chosen to participate in BLUE and also how they passed trials. In manga, they were just 'there'.

So yes, a friendly reminder to anime-only(s) that this is still a teeny-tiny better version of manga for this arc. Imagine how we manga readers bared through it until the end :D

Currently rewatching previous seasons to compare to this dumpster fire and noticed things started to deteriorate with Azami's introduction. Pace started to be a bit rushed and development became somewhat lackluster and more generic shounen-like. But now it's funny that when compared to Asahi, Azami seemed like the best-written villain ever, lol.

As expected, the pacing goes into hyper speed territory, now. Since the manga's pacing that this point was very rushed, it's no surprise that the anime version does the same.

It's a shame, really, since I still really like this series a lot. =(

If I have of one thing that was still good of this episode, it was showcasing Erina's descend to madness, with her being so fixated on winning the whole BLUE tournament that she's now becoming desperate.

I do miss Azami now. He might've been a piece of crap, but as a villain, he was written far better than Asahi by a country mile. XD

Everything is so rushed in this episode, we're going straight to the last match and nothing else matters: we know nothing about Megumi's improved skills (there's just NO BATTLE) nor the other characters that defined the anime all across its seasons.
This Cross Knives ability is bullshit (and boring too, as Asahi)... Although I was surprised to know that Bookmaster is Erina's mother.

A lot of the people who read the manga say that this arc is still an improvement over it's manga variant. Even so, they might have been better of writing a different ending all together, or at least make the ending just 2 ova episodes, one for context and one for the final battle, since everything in between these things is pure ppt filler at this point. I used to watch this show because it was about cooking in a general sense, but now it is about cooking tools for some reason and everybody is competing for the title of best one-trick pony.

Noooo, Megumi :(

That was rather painful to watch, but it was so obvious she wouldn't win once paired against Asahi. But still give this girl a break. Her win at the Anime-original prelims really make it seem like a pity win now... and I am saddened by that!

Megumi can scold me any day though!

Asahi is a beast!! But I guess we all know >_>; Feel bad for Takumi to have a battle with Erina, but it was no surprising he couldn't win against Erina like this
:( Megumi did her best too </3 Also, Asahi's insane when he told Megumi to stop being friends with Erina :( Who does he think he is??

This season could have been good if there wasn't much crap in it, like those "cooking utensils" from Noir. Chainsaw? Claws of Death?? Magic Circus Balls??? (etc, etc, etc...) The imagination here is over the top and is not one bit realistic. Sad :(

You know a food anime is lost when the focus is no longer on the food.
The Megumi vs. assassin battle was rushed and meritless, and the actual Shokugeki part was so juvenile. "Stop being mean to Erina!" "lol Stop being her friend!" This sounds like something 10-year-olds would say in a generic shojo anime. It's like the series forgot these guys are in their late teens, who have been put in many adult situations. I see where the "development backtracking" is, now, that the manga readers warned us about. So far, everything they've said is true.
