Great way to end this season; I really was moved by it but I hate cliffhangers. Still, it felt like it was more or less true to the original so I respect that.

Not the best finale of a season but it teases good things for a possible sequel but if it truly stops here with the last episodes hints being just "read the manga for the rest lol" it would feel like a waste of time overall

Boy, that's a nasty cliffhanger! Kenshin bids farewell to Kaoru and makes his decision to go after Shishio. It wasn't exactly an announcement but the last few seconds made it seem like a sequel is indeed in progress, which would make for great news.

Much like the season as a whole, the pacing feels a little bit on the fast end, so here's to hoping they take their time with the Kyoto Arc because it's going to be epic, I'm sure. I'm still on the OG series bandwagon but this has been a really fun watch and I hope they continue by adapting the manga sections that weren't previously covered in due time.

Sonzai Shoumei in the background was pretty cool, it's been one of my fav tracks from the season and the show knew when to liven things up with it.

I mean, what is there to say? The first season of the remake ended just when it started getting good. It was cool when they showed Makoto Shishio's face at the end. I really wish this wasn't a seasonal anime, when the original was a longrunning anime. It's obviously not over yet and I'm expecting a complete adaptation of the manga. And the people who can't wait for the Kyoto arc can just watch the 1996 version of it.

I always get excited when an anime gets a remake, and this remake introduced the series to a new generation of fans, which is its main purpose. Older fans got to see this show with a new coat of paint with its updated animation and in widescreen, and a dose of nostalgia along with it. This remake is what I wanted Trigun Stampede to be like. 2D animation and following the manga. RK 2023 has a lower rating/ranking on this site than I was expecting, but that's probably because the Tokyo arc was never an amazing arc anyway, and it's all about the Kyoto arc, so the ranking makes sense (even if the first season adapted a tiny bit of the Kyoto arc towards the end). I'd be surprised if the next season doesn't get a much higher ranking on this site. And it's also a shame that many people (as in anime fans) don't seem to know this remake even exists but know about the 1996 version. Maybe it'll get popular by the time Jinchuu arc starts airing? idk. Just waiting for the second season to be announced. Surprised that it hasn't been announced right after the first season ended. Funny thing is that the manga for Rurouni Kenshin and the manga for Jujutsu Kaisen have a similar rating/ranking on this site, very close to each other, so basically both series are equal in quality manga-wise, but everyone is all about the Jujutsu Kaisen S2 anime, which I do like. So yeah, I like this remake, and I know it's just going to keep getting better.

Also, you know what's interesting? The next season will be the THIRD anime adaptation of the Kyoto arc of Rurouni Kenshin. It was adapted in the 1996 version, but then in 2011, it was partially adapted in the Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc OVA. And soon, it'll be adapted for the third time!

Contrary to the rant I'm about to brew up, I was actually one of those people who - after growing up on the original RK - welcomed a modern retelling and the liberties it would be willing to take. I wasn't expecting every quality from the 90s version, but Kenshin's departure was an abject disappointment. I suppose I can at least thank this remake for sparing me having to wait a year or two to get this riled up. This version was sorely lacking personality and fell flat in its execution. Most notably, the soundtrack was barely there and often times they didn't even have music at moments where the original was dropping peak Taku Iwasaki. That plus the lack of creative visual effects - such as Kenshin's Battousai Mode - really made sure that nothing about this remake stood out.

And I suppose that's where I find myself the most conflicted. In RK'96, the quality gap between seasons one & two was astonishing. Excluding fillers, I would have given S1 (RK'23 Eps 1-19) a 7.5 whereas S2 was a borderline 10. In RK'23's case, I feel as though it significantly polished much of what made RK'96 drag earlier and would give it an 8/10. The problem then is that it maintains that polished consistency, but never leaps up to the same heights that make the opening episodes of this next saga so legendary. I'm already considering passing on the next season just because I don't want to unfairly compare it to the gold standard that RK'96 set.

I'm still grateful to see a revival of Rurouni Kenshin and I do hope this eventually covers the arc that OG Kenshin never did justice.

8/10 for Eps 1-21
7/10 for Eps 22-24
8 Overall, namely because RK'23 does more right in improvements than it does wrong in not being a total masterpiece.

Edit:
Well after revisiting these last few episodes in RK'96, I'm at least relieved to see that both versions aren't as different as I was imagining. That said, I think it really does come down to execution - namely building atmosphere & setting the mood. In this version, Kenshin's departure feels so matter-of-fact, like you're playing a video game and delivering an item to an NPC. I don't want to spoil the enchantment of RK'96's approach here, but it was truly romantic and one of the scenes I was most anticipating in this remake. I'm still pretty mad about it, but I can at least give the rest of the remake a bit more credit.

absolutely amazing series 10/10 the story was so entertaining from start to finish , accompanied by amazing opening and ending songs , especially the one from ed2 by Kid Phenomenon , I never watched the original but I've always wanted to and being a seasonal anime watcher this gave me the perfect chance to watch the remake that's coming out and im just so glad I did. the characters are so loveable and hate able when they need to be. I'm so so sooooo looking forward to the rest of this being animated which idk how many episodes that would take but we definitely should be getting another season and maybe a 3rd

Hm, I don't know how to describe this season other than "mediocre". The remake did not elevate the source material at all, it just looks like another generic seasonal anime to me. From what I've seen from the original, it seemed like a lot of care was put into that adaptation, so I'm kinda curious to watch it now.

Trigun Stampede has phenomenal 3D animation, a million times better than watching something like this that has incredibly surface-level animation and flat storyboarding.

Rip for Sir Okubo, well said about a future, and thanks for your little appearance service for the plot. Also, man, Saitou was really cool by slaying those scums without hesitate and as expected too as an ex Shinsengumi, he's a very idealistic. But wait a minute, was those Okubo assasin like another ex Shinsengumi too from Saitou divison, since i've seen the face similar from Saitou flashback scene, or, am i tripping? Hmmm....

Well even if i already know Kenshin must need to leave to Kyoto thanks to a certain hyper spoiler words around about the next arc, i really didn't expect Shishio man to just arrive and getting the plot moving forward more faster since those Kenshin mode truly didn't wanna leave waifu Rieri alone.

At the end of the day, that's it the farewell word from Hitokiri Battosai, and also from Rurouni Kenshin remake (2023). Shall i consider remake part II for Kyoto arc? Lets hope about it but not with high expectation, as always.

Oh yes. Okubo's assassination and the farewell scene with Kaoru. I honestly prefer their 96' counterparts but gotta say both moments were still acceptable here. Except for the inclusion of the ED song, which lowkey ruined what was supposed to be a very heavy and emotional moment. Wonder what they were thinking...

Overall, I feel quite satisfied with this Remake for the Tokyo Saga. Practically 100% faithful to the manga and I'm particularly glad the studio decided to put more effort than usual into this project. Some fighting sequences looked really good and the decision of giving more depth to certain characters (Oniwabanshuu group, for example) was truly appreciated.
That said, some minor complains I had were the more lively color palette, some character re-designs and the OK-ish OST this season received. Other than that, I still had a very enjoyable experience.

7/10 - Looking forward to S2 announcement. Kyoto Saga couldn't come sooner!

It keeps much of the charm the source material had, and the intrinsics of the original adaptation.

My expectations were not lofty to begin with given the current state of the industry. Much of this adaptation's shortcomings is just the unfortunate lack of funding which the 96 version as with most anime during that time had a bunch of. Hence, it had a weaker soundtrack and less daring animation.

That being said, I don't hold any big expectations for s2 either. Most anime these days tend to falter after the first season.

I liked Rurouni Kenshin story, Excited for the second season(I didn't watch the old version because I didn't knew about it so I don't know any spoilers of Rurouni Kenshin anime so I am knowing the story from this remake😅)

the ending of this season was good and maybe sad for Kaoru and Kenshin hugged her and said "thanks for everything and farewell", Kenshin is going to face the successor of Hitokiri Battousai Makoto Shishio.

I'm honestly a little bit shocked how badly I feel the last two episodes dropped the ball. Throughout the entire Rurouni Kenshin story his fight with Saito and saying goodbye to Karou are two of the most key and just plane iconic moments of the franchise and the remake didn't live up to them. If anyone hasn't watched the original or hasn't watched it lately go back, do yourself a favor, and watch these two moments from that. They are just done so much better. They way they are shot, the lighting, editing, music. All are just of a higher quality and give these moments the weight that they deserve.

There's no way they can't know how important these two parts are and to basically dilute them as they did sucks to see. An all time favorite anime and one of my 3 favorite manga I was so happy to see it getting a modern rerelease, but if two of the biggest moments in the franchise seem to get treated as if they are like anything else it doesn't inspire confidence for anymore future episodes.

This show was so flat all around I really aint got much more to say, everything at worst was just kind of bland but everything at best was just small glimmers of marginal interest and incredibly low energy feeling character interactions and fights, I really feel like that original found a way to create a genuinely compelling atmosphere especially with the Saito moments which i distinctly recall being when i got hooked whereas here it felt like just more of the same with the bright artstyle really failing to ever sell the tone.

Kyoto is where the series comes into its own, by I dont have faith this adaption is going to really do it well.

Hopefully this was successful enough to get a second season.

Very tragic way Okubo had to lose his life. His ambitions and all his previous actions served a future nation, whose current government should not only be shifted to a civil government, but which he also wanted to hand over to the younger generation at a certain point. However, his death once again confirmed the urgency of why he asked for help from Kenhsin in the first place and was without a doubt the ultimate trigger for why Kenshin decided to travel to Kyoto after all. Considering how strong Okubo's assassin already appeared, Kenshin will probably have his hands full in the next arc.

In general, it is not difficult to see that Shishio's obsession with power and his now existing chance of actually gaining that power represents an enormous danger and the extent of his rule would be fatal.

The farewell between Kenshin and Kaoru was certainly bittersweet.
For Kenshin, this time at the dojo that he was able to spend with Kaoru, Sano, Yahiko and Megumi was something unforgettable, which probably made this farewell much more difficult.

The ending definitely got me hyped for the next season as I've heard a lot about the following arc and it will be interesting to see how it is implemented in a more modern style. By the way, an interesting choice for the voice of Shishio in the form of Furukawa Makoto (Saitama, One Punch Man).

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this remake, which was also my first experience with Rurouni Kenshin. So I'm already looking forward to the next season, which will apparently be released this year.

The popularity of Kenshin severely declined over the years, especially in the English speaking countries, so there was absolutely no hype.
Outside of that, the Remake of Kenshin is very much flawed, and there is no cute waifu.
