From an appearance point of view, Su-Won is too bishounen for my taste... but personality wise, damn, that guy is awesome, and this episode showed it. I think this episode really portrayed a different side of Su-Won: he's wise, plans ahead, and really knows how to win the people over. Contrast this with the previous king, King Il. Sure, he loves peace and his people, but let's not forget what that starving villager said in last week's episode: who exactly did King Il save in the end? In real life, it's not always the pacifist who saves everyone; in fact, sometimes, it's the pacifist who screws everything up.

Man, I'm starting to think it's better if Su-Won wins after all.

It's pretty clear Yona will become an interesting counter-balance to Su-Won if he strays away from the path. Remember, he is walking a slippery slope that can either lead the nation to peace and prosperity, or lead the nation to tyranny and oppression (but perhaps also prosperity). Deep down, Su-Won really wants to make the nation better and not watch his people suffer.

Yona's father had his reasons doing what he did to protect Yona, but completely failed as a king so it's not a surprise he got disposed by Su-Won.

I really wish Soo-Won would stop overdoing it with his "rabbit/squirrel act". It made it hard to take him and a good chunk of this episode seriously.

T'was a bit funny though, but I hoped for an epic mock battle where Soo-Won proves himself to Lord Geun-tea(not in a comical way). Not saying he should've given up his act entirely, just tone it down. He could've still executed his plan anyway - plenty of ways to intentionally loose a duel that the audience wouldn't notice.

Rather than misleading & cunning, he looked more like a buffoon this episode - not exactly fitting for a king.

Still can't get enough of the new OP and ED!
Fun episode. I love how they added OP 1 as an ost dying the mock battle.
The anime is adapting greatly according to the manga so far imo.

Thanks for posting these! I really appreciate it. I had no idea he did some artwork for Akatsuki no Yona. Like you said, it's a funny coincidence, especially since there are definitely some Berserk parallels in the series.

Did anyone NOT pay attention to the previous episodes in this anime!

King Il did not kill his brother to take the throne, his father chose him over the older brother Yu-Hon!

Soo-won is the only person that has ever claimed that King Il killed his father and with all his lies and deceit, who knows if he is even telling the truth!

The facts that still need to be answered are basically:

1. Did King Il really kill his brother as Soo-won is accusing him of?
2. Was King Il really a bad king or was it the Tribe Generals that were the ones that neglected their people?
3. Why did the old king really pick his timid son to rule over the stronger son?

Hopefully we will get the answers to all of this before the anime ends, but since I never read the manga I don't know if these questions were ever answered there even!
So glad that I'm not a huge manga reader, because the manga readers WHINE WAY TOO MUCH and have to RUIN every adapted anime for the ANIME ONLY WATCHERS!

This episode is one of my favorites so far. Su-won is really interesting. Looks like next week's episode won't be about him & I'm a bit sad, I wouldn't mind a whole arc about him without seeing Yona & cie.

I think (& hope) we'll get answers. Most of the time when a king dies & people start talking about the shit leader he was you later get an explanation about why he was bad. I don't think the man who told Yona the King neglected people lied but I wanna know why the King didn't seem to give a shit about them. & yeah, the fact the stronger son didn't become King seems odd but at the same time why not, while Su-won may be a good leader after all (especially after watching this ep I sorta respect him) he's not very strong if we compare him to Hak for example.

Next week our protagonists are back. Can't wait to see the Green dragon. Hopefully he fights Hak, I love seeing Hak in action.

I'm glad we got to see Su-Won wield a sword again. He's possibly my favourite type of villain, somebody who can hide behind a mask, and be diplomatic to those who he think is valuable to his goal. And yet at the same time he is capable at understanding his surrounding and able to counter act.

Geun vs Suu-Won was short, but entertaining and intense nonetheless. I look forward to when Su is on a battlefield.

This show had a strong beginning, but somewhere in the middle it went downhill for me. That was when they introduced the story about the 4 dragons. And I was hoping Yona would become more rebellious over time, but she's still too tame.

Anyway.. it was nice to see an episode that focuses on politics for a change - with Gung-tae slowly realizing how cunning Su-won really is.
That was probably my favorite episode so far.

Soo-Won is a snake, sly and malicious. He has a good understanding of people and uses it to his advantage. On the surface he appears harmless, but in reality he is dangerous. The mock battle illustrated his character well. I don't like Soo-Won himself, but as a character, as an antagonist, he's really good. It's this sort of writing that gives AnY so much potential.

The politics really is interesting.

Does this really only have 24 episodes? It'll probably take at least four episodes just to finish up assembling the dragons. I don't see how the four after that will leave enough time to do much.

AnY really needs to be a long runner. ;-;

I have to agree. Ever since he killed Yona's father and the events after that, one can see that he is sly as a fox. Although he is such, he is a genius.

Since the manga is still ongoing for this anime. Let's just hope for 2nd season.

Yuno is so cute and sweet! It would be nice to see Gung-tae to melt once in a while when he sees the wife happy face. But yeah, I doubt it will happen. haha

Did Soo-won say that he did it all for the sake of war? It's only good for him if Geun-tae starts to respect Soo-won as the King if war ensues. I don't think Soo-won will be the one to start a war, but he still needs generals who will fight for him and the country when the time comes to defend themselves. Remember, people were angry at King Il for giving away land instead of fighting back when conflict arose with other countries. Soo-won will not let that happen as he wants Kouka to be a strong kingdom.

It's true that usually at this point in many series, we would already see plenty of character development. Although imo AnY goes at a really good pace, it might seem slow for others. But worry not, I think you guys will like this upcoming arc ^^

The war game was awesome!! The whole rabbit on the outside, tiger on the inside or whatever is a pretty overused trope, but I still enjoyed it XD Soo-won is so cool, and he's such a likable character. I wonder how that's going to work with Yona's group because to them Soo-won is clearly the antagonist. At the same time, it clearly hurts Soo-won to be the antagonist of Yona's group... I wonder if sometime down the line, they'll form an alliance against some common enemy, like from surrounding territories or something. Looks like we'll get to see the green dragon next week!!

Yes, I'm very curious to see how the conflict between the two will come about as well, and how the nation as a whole will react to it. As far as everyone knows, Yona was kidnapped or murdered.

Princess Yona vs. Soo-Won the Usurper King.

I kinda doubt it will be as simple as eliminating Soo-Won, though.

Yona will become a villain. The country is already impoverished after her father's reign. The last thing it needs is civil disturbance. Besides, if she is going to govern the country, she better knows what she is doing. Knowing how to use a bow and look nicely does not make one a good ruler.

As Hibbington noticed, Soo-won understands politics and economy, so the country is better off having him as the ruler than a princess who is ignorant about them.

Nothing Su-Won does can change the fact that his kingdom is built on the murder of his king and that he was prepared to let Yona die for his ambition. I think people should remember that.

Having said that, he is one interesting and smart customer. He makes for a formidable antagonist for Yona and her small crew.

He is a REALLY well written "villain" because you really can justify his actions. The King murdered his father to take the throne, then became a huge wimp, banned war and conflict, but abandoned many villages leaving its people to die.
Su-won avenged his fathers murder, and took the throne. And now is working to let the kingdom prosper, but is still avoiding conflict if its unnecessary. He DOES however, prepare for it. Yona and Hak are the ONLY people who know that Su-won killed King Ill. SO should Yona, Hak and the dragons manage to kill Su-won, THEY will be viewed as the villains by the entire country.

THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE INTERESTING PLOT AND CHARACTERS! This show is so impressive to me.

Emmm...You do realize that Yona is the actual heir to the throne right. She has the right to the throne even without killing him.

Haha tea buddies :p Andf Su-Won explains supply and demand!

This episode kinda felt like filler until the end (but the mock war was pretty fun!). Su-Won did all of those things to improve the well-being of the people of the Earth tribe, but given the fact that he killed his uncle to get to the throne, and also how he was talking about war and Gung-Tae being a powerful ally, it seems obvious that Su-Won has ulterior motives.

Hmm pirates next episode? sounds interesting!

Although I still want to continue hating Su-Won your comments definitely give good reason for why the King's murder should be tolerated.

At this point tho, I think something to make this all even more interesting is to show what actually happened b/w the King and his brother. Like for instance, the king really had a good reason for killing him, or maybe he didn't do it at all and its a misunderstanding. I mean he's such a sweet person who Hak chose to follow (c'mon that holding the sword thing and bleeding in silence was admirable)!

But realistically I don't trust that advisor Su-Won has. He seems dark and manipulative. He's definitely behind something.

This show really continues to impress me. Soo-Won shows his political prowess by gaining trust for allies as he seems to prepare to war. He puts on a show to rally the spirits of the tribal people for their own leader. This is more than simply a girl going to kick ass and reclaim her kingdom like it was implied.

The little wife with her tea is super adorable too.

But I'm getting nervous as we're really in the last leg of this series, ANN says this is 24 episodes and well we're still kind of gathering team Yona. I really don't want to see a rush job for the ending there's so much building and I'm hoping the payoff will be good.

This is showing to be a very smartly written show let's just hope the pace will pick up a little more but I have been enjoying the moderate pace and getting really well rounded character development.

Not quite sure how I feel about this episode. Soo-won is being portrayed in a much better light than he deserves. Sugar coat it all you want, he still murdered the father of his childhood friend, who both trusted and was in love with him. Conniving manipulators are usually sharp, but that does not exonerate his motives or actions in killing Yona;s father.

I liked watching Gung-tae and Yuno interact, but other than that this episode just felt like a way of showing Su-won won the Earth tribe's allegiance.

The hawk comment he made was important though I guess. I was thinking Su-won seemed kind of like a snake - he slithers around unnoticed and strikes at the most opportune moment. He's a smart character but I don't like him, even if he is good at leading a nation I wouldn't want someone willing to kill his uncle and close friends to get to the throne.

Soo-won has an ulterior motive. It may look like he's simply trying to help the poor because all we've seen him do is going around and fixing the country, however, we can't forget what he said when he took the throne. He wants to be king to fulfill his father's wish. Uniting the tribes is just a step to getting to his true goal. Whether his true goal is going to be good for Kouka or not is still yet to be determined because we don't really know what his father was attempting to do. I'm a little suspicious, however, because we were told that his father wasn't picked to be king even though he was the oldest one, that his father chased the priest out of the castle, and forbade people from reading about King Hiryuu. Not only that but he got stabbed to death by a gentle brother who was a pacifist. Soo-won also said that he wanted the power of the people...so, clearly, his goal would involve gaining the people's trust and loyalty, getting them to stand behind him. Fixing the country will certainly get you all of that...especially considering how much they disliked the previous king. Since Soo-won is so cunning and knows how to take advantage of people's weaknesses, it wouldn't surprise me if he's using that same tactic here in taking advantage of the country's weak state to gain the good will of the people.

I don't think Soo-won is seeking to destroy Kouka or anything. He probably thinks what he's doing truly is what's best for the country, however, if its based off his father's wish, I would be a little wary. Also, King Il has been portrayed as a very bad King, but I have to wonder if he's just a scapegoat in all of this. What if the downfall of the country was helped set up in the first place by Soo-won's father( or possibly even Soo-won himself)? Soo-won is brilliant, smart, and capable...but, just because someone is capable of being a good king doesn't necessarily mean he will be. Depends on what's in his head and his heart too. Really, what's his end goal?

Yona will become a villain. The country is already impoverished after her father's reign. The last thing it needs is civil disturbance. Besides, if she is going to govern the country, she better knows what she is doing. Knowing how to use a bow and look nicely does not make one a good ruler.

As Hibbington noticed, Soo-won understands politics and economy, so the country is better off having him as the ruler than a princess who is ignorant about them.

I agree Yona would be viewed as the villain at this point if she tried to take out Soo-won. Like you said, her father is being looked upon as a horrible king and Soo-won is the one fixing up the country, right? In the people's eyes, he's pretty much Kouka's savior. Gotta give it to Soo-won. He's looking real good right now and everything is going his way. As I said above though, just because someone understands politics and economy doesn't necessarily mean they would be a good king. Depends on what his motivation and drive is. Is it really the people? Will his end goal really benefit the people? Also, IMO, Soo-won's way isn't the only way to be a successful ruler. Different methods work for different people. For example, Yona is gaining allies with her honesty, resolve, courage, and determination. Like Soo-won, she also knows how to get people to side with her. She just does things differently.

At this early stage, Yona certainly isn't ready to handle the country...but I think her story is far from over and she will most certainly grow as a character. Since this is her story and not Soo-won's, I'm hoping she will grow and become someone worthy of ruling the country, especially given how much she loves and cares about her people.

And Yuno is so cheerful and cutesy. She's so different from Geun-tae. Talk about opposites attracting. How cute ^^
