A case to find a ciminal or a murder case. Well, Makoto once again goes to show how selfless he is as a detective and as a person.

For what's worth, I find that quite respectable. Dealing with a murder case is not easy.

A very sad story in this episode. Makoto trying to uncover a murder becoming something else entirely. Always more to something simple like that I suppose. Nanjo was a stamd up guy trying to carry on his son memory while being good to his grandson too. Another little one off side story with this episode showing us some of the people in Ikebukuro. Makoto got roughed the hell up looking for answers. Toshi turned out to not be such a great guy, probably didn't deserve to be pushed down some stairs and his head busted open, a long jail cell would've been more appropriate but still a crazy unraveling of how things seemed at the start. Definitely have a lot of respect for Nanjo seeing how he failed Toshi and didn't see the horrible man his son had become. Harumi and that couple carrying around the guilt of the truth for years. I'm glad that Makoto could help them all out and set things as they should be. No matter how hard it is to face the truth is always better than falsehoods built up to retain an image we have of someone in our minds.

I was expecting so much more from this series.

The pacing and the general feeling of the episode felt so weird/just off. The second half was better tho, still really disappointed and hopefully the next episodes will get better. Definitely not a fan so far

Yeah a murder case is pretty tragic, I feel like this episode was way more serious than what we had previously (like for example with the youtuber)

A step up from the terrible youtube episode but this anime really lacks consistency in what it's trying to be. One episode is about how weed is bad the next we have youtube drama and now we have a murder case. If the plot continues to be episodic, IWGP could be in trouble.

This episode was really depressing... but finally, we get a more serious subject than before. I really hope this keeps up for the rest of the series. I also thought at the beginning of the episode that maybe this will set the tone for how the plot develops for the rest of the series, but in the end, it was still a one-episode only story. I agree with everyone above, this anime would be much better with a continuous narrative. Might be personal taste as well, since I'm not that fond of episodic shows.

Ikebukuro problem solved daily in the episodic approaching way continued with some kind of a murder case. Makoto involved at the random murderer act that somehow brought back memories about his own dad. The son was a gang's leader by holding a harsh and temperament personality, actually had a fight with his own wife and its ended up in a bad way. His wife wanted to break up, because she cheated, he had no son afterall on her belly, and then died in a tragic sceneries. Its such an unfortunate fate for him. Maybe i can called it a bad karma too over whats he has been done in the past. But, its not that i will protect that lady so much. Everyone were just all wrong, even with Toshi dad's too. A different perceptions made it looks convoluted, actually its just kinda straight forward. Once again, the end resolution was understandable in an easy way of thinking. Its just an accident with a lot of heavy breath behind it. Its really good knewing all of the mystery already been solved by themself, without any unnecessary tireful drama. A law must be enforced. But, no self judgement and punishment from his dad, really a nice way to clear the thing. Surely, Toshi's dad had a bad life. However, like Makoto said, whatever happened, he was still a great person, at least on his eyes. A simple story with another simple conclusion. IWGP kept it as low profile as expected, as usual too. A fine episode again. I really hope that these episode will be the marking point to set free the plot against an episodic approaching at the very first four episodes. Or was i wrong? Lets see the next!

Well that was depressing. I feel really bad for the old man and I kinda hope Makoto keeps in touch with him, just to give him a bit of relief. Imagine the son you thought was a nice guy but rough around the edges got murdered in cold blood, you research the death, only to find out he was a domestic abuser, your grandson isn't biologically yours, and he was killed out of self-defense from abusing another person. I hope he'll be okay.

Personally, I don't mind episodic storytelling, if done right. And IWGP certainly delivered with every episode so far. This one was a sad story with a really sad conclusion. But I agree with other people saying that a continuous narrative would fit this show better. I'm still hoping we'll get that though.

this one was a compelling episode for me.

It's was a complete change in topic from the last episode. The story was built out well with many characters getting involved in the crime and a very harsh and sad ending for probably every character at that final scene but Makoto.
I don't think the music connected with the theme of the episode that well at least for me but everything else was great, I really enjoyed this episode!

Good episode :)

A genuine story about a murder case that's full of regret, but still episodic in the full sense. But still, points for being serious for once.

Makoto's gone full undercover for an old man's journey to uncover the massive trips of former gang members, and his son that's DOA, the unfillial one that got murdered in cold blood due to his excessive abuse.

Quite a depressing episode that I can only say, it could end for the best. Hopefully Makoto can keep contact with him.

A sad little story, but can't help thinking that this is just a teaser for Makoto's backstory, and confirmed that Makoto is a real main character. This is his own show.

Ueno gang is also very hot! Like current leader Rintarou, second-gen leader Kouji (is he still alive? why he doesn't appear in this episode?), and even a bad guy Toshi is hot too!

This episode was a hell of a improvement compared to chapter 3. The story was kinda good, the attitudes of every person were pretty mature and coherent and that ending seems to lead to some kind of development for Makoto... The highlight might be the gorgeous work that Doga Kobo is making on the aesthetics and sound, both are really outstanding.

This was a major improvement from episode 3, more stories from the people of Ikebukuro seen through Makoto's eyes. He did everything on his own this episode without the help of G-Boys, probably because it felt personal as he had lost his own father. The visuals and the new ED really nail home the depressing tone of the episode, with the rain falling on Makoto.

Does anyone know the song playing in the ED?

I mean this was the best episode so far but that's not a high bar to jump. Still it's like what is Makoto and what was that setup? Imagine you're some old guy visiting the site of your sons death 5 years ago and you see this random 20+ y/o and are like hey stranger wanna hear my story and also investigate his death for me? And the guy is just like yeah man not like I do anything else with my time. I mean he's not a PI or anything and he ain't getting paid for this shit. He's just some gang leaders right hand man but is not actually in the gang for... reasons? Yes his dad died so there is some connection but it's like???? Don't you have anything else to do?

I agree that a more continuous story would be better but, let's be honest that episode was really great. Yeah, pacing is a little off but overall the episode was still really impactful.

Mad respect to the dad and to Makoto too, that case probably was important to him since he lost his dad. Great episode, hopefully we get a continuous story now.

It is not that bad. The episodic story was a bit more serious. (Not funny as with the YouTuber guy.) Reminds a bit of Natsume Yuujinchou. (Just on a lower niveau and with gangs around and the main dealing with stuff in the city instead of Youkai. Stronly focused on that 1 main. The other leaders of the gangs didn't even appear - only in contact via phone to ask about clues.)

Feels less over the top than Durarara. More calm/normal.

I am a little confused with this anime
.
I mean... its sort of a dark slice of life so far! Not that it is bad in itself, but this being adapted from a Novel, I was expecting more of a plot.
Unrelated episodes sometimes are there to introduce characters... but how long can they affort to do so with so little episode to go?

Did anyone read the novel? Is it this vibe? Is it worth to keep watching?

So, Makoto once again finds himself drafted into investigating the dead of a gang boss who has a habit of not only being a badass, but also beats his wife , wlep, IMAO , that asshole deserves to die, TBH, I'd have no pity for that gang boss's dad, cu'z he failed as a parent.

ngl was kinda expecting it to be a more saddened ending from the side of the wife, was actually quite glad with the way this one ended.

This ep is definitely the best of the bunch so far, mainly because Makoto was hardly involved in presenting his shitty judgement on the entire situation

well in fairness he was in a fuked position from the start lol. Either send a couple with a child on the way to prison for killing his son, or let his son's murder's live so they can stay as a family. Though I guess after hearing about all the shit his son did is probably why it ended up being less dramatic than it could've been (and the fact that grandpa seems like a really nice guy)

The anime is giving me vibes, that it will keep being one story per episode until ep 10 or so and then something will happen that will be solved in the last epsodes... That's why i am dropping it. Stories so far wasnt that good to keep my attention.

About this episode story, i really don't understand why Makoto bothered to go that far into this plot, he could bring serious problems to the G-Boys investigating the death of another gang leader... Specially when the gang itself doesn't want people meddling into this story... Then out of nowhere the gang decide to cooperate WTF??

In one scene the ex-girlfriend of the dead is adamant into not telling the father, Makoto decide to tell a lie, and after he tell the lie, the ex-gf appear and tell the whole truth???

This is bad writting people... The characters contradict themselves in a matter of minutes...

Danm it... 4 episodes in and we are at volume 4 of the novel?? One episode per volume? And they even introduce fillers? OMG this is really bad adaptation... The story might make sense and be better structured in the novel, one whole volume to tell the story, but in 20 minutes? (if you take away op and ed) Impossible... Yeah, i am deffinitly dropping the series... Which is sad, because if they had given more time for each volume, i don't know 3 episodes per volume? the anime could be a lot better.

Easily best episode so far... though that doesn't say much considering the previous three, honestly. The series still isn't what I was hoping it to be but this episode sure was the one closer to that idea in terms of seriousness and dramatism. This said, the gloomy atmosphere was decently executed but man, the conclusion with a random woman being the one who accidentally killed Toshi felt incredibly anticlimactic. Maybe it's just me here but I was totally expecting the scumbag to die as the result of a prior agreement between Harumi and Kouji. Not by an outsider.

Anyways, still decent episode overall. Wonder if the old man will stop visiting the kid now tho.

Mood whiplash from last week. This episode was better in comparison to what came before, but that isn't saying much.

When's the "rising tide of violence" supposed to start? Where are the "warring factions"? When's he gonna "lose a loved one"? Where's the "spilled blood that floods his streets"?

Literally where are any of the elements within the show synopsis that made me watch it in the first place? This is just a weekly mystery + PSA.

PSAs so far:
1. drugs bad
2. abusive work environment bad
3. internet clout chasing bad
4. domestic abuse bad

Great, thanks. Can't wait until the kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual abuse, and government corruption themed episodes where more huge problems are dumbed down and tackled by our boy Makoto within 1 episode. Keep going with these surface level cold takes and never go into depth about these issues. It's super entertaining.

now this was a bit serious...domestic violence.
the gramps that had an idiot of a son and his grandchild was not even his own blood that hurts.
quite conflicting because if I were gramps shows i'd take revenge for my own son, but still conflicted because if my son is a lost cause now that's a whole different situation.

A good episode,a sad story.

I consider it as the best episode in IWGP which have been aired. The 3 episodes before had the same problem. They used the most time to tell the cause of a case but told the end just by the character's words. It was not a good rhythm. However, this story in ep4 is complete and touching."If I were your son,I would be proud of you."
