THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
First two episodes premiered online on March 21.

continuing Appare's and Kosame's journey in Los Angeles, where they find out about Trans-America wild race, which fires up Appare's interest in the machines even more. it seems, Kosame is forced to join Appare in this, as they're broke and the only feasible way to gather funds for a trip back to Japan is the prize pool of the race itself

also this episode we're introduced with a couple new characters, mainly Xia Lian, a young girl aspiring to be an auto racer, but it discriminated based on her sex. Appare encourages Xia Lian to chase her dream and from the look of the opening scene in the previous episode, she does exactly that

I think this is gonna be a great anime in terms of exploring the two cultures mingling at a time when things were only just starting to change in Japan.

I like the way Isshiki represents the past of Japan and Appare represents the future of Japan.

How are people rating and reviewing this anime already... there are only 2 eps what are people judging their scores and opinions on?!

Appare is such a weird character. He is Senkuu if he was a mechanic and was voiced by Tanjirou.

Also, no language barier existing in this anime is just so odd.

Anyways, this anime is neat. I quite enjoyed it.

It still takes it's time, but the pacing is quite enjoyable.

Judging by the characters it's nothing special so far. They're likeable, that's it. Gotta see how this series will develop once the race starts for real and the adventure begins.

Well if there was a language barrier it would be difficult to tell the story. It's the same as in Western tv shows and movies when every single person in the world just happens to be able to speak English

To early to tell how much this anime deserves...Samurai flamenco taught me never to judge an anime early, because something great can turn into a disgusting pile of shit very easily with the wrong plot twist.

Very enjoyable first and second episode, pacing makes them feel like 5 mins. Appare's character design is a love or hate thing I guess, I find myself really loving it.

So you mean the third episode will be released two weeks after that (24 April), quite a wait then.

I'm a little confused, this was America in the olden days or some pseuodo form of it. Jing is told she can't become a racer because she's a woman but they have no problem with her being a mechanic? If they really thought she couldn't do certain things because she's a woman then wouldn't they just make her do the laundry and cooking? Anyways, it's nice to see another Asian character, a Chinese one in the mix.

So far, I'm still really into this and I can't wait to see the other characters. This series is not meant to be taken seriously, at least for me, it's just something fun to watch. I'm particular interested in the blonde guy race car driver we saw in the first episode.

not enough racism so of course pseudo form of it. :P

But why she is mechanic? I think they let her be helper before they realized that she is a woman and then let her stay because it was convenient for them.

This show gives me early 2000s Jetix anime vibes. Also reminds me a lot of FLCL

Not sure how I feel about Appare’s design, mainly the red marks on the lips. It’s certainly unique, but hmmm

Xia Lian is adorable, love her character. It’s a bit confusing how she’s allowed to be a mechanic and not a racer. Surely men wouldn’t trust her to fix up and maintain their cars either..

Solid second episode. Really enjoy this juxtaposition of a changing world with Shogunate era Japan represented by Kosame and a modern world represented by Appare and America. Wonder if this’ll be delayed too going forward since the first two eps had already premiered back in March

They will still air the 3rd episode next week, but any broadcast of new episodes will be delayed until further notice - new broadcast dates are to be revealed on the series' official site and social media accounts :(

Certainly was a very entertaining episode!

Language barrier - not found. For some reason, this always leaves a bitter taste for me. Samurai showing off his skills against a Pro Boxer and some thugs, definitely expected this somewhere along the line and here it is xD. To add to that, a Chinese descendant Karate Master plus a Cowboy - this show has got it all it seems, lol.

Appare modifying the vehicle, much to Jing's surprise, was a really cool scene though. Expected that but I'm always down for stuff like this.

Kosame freezing up near the end there, looks like he's had bad history with guns. Gives the conversation earlier (where Appare dozed off) some more significance too.

Soundtracks, I'm really digging it so far. I always knew it was going to be great since Evan Call is in charge of the composition anyway but it's good to have confirmation.

It's a pity this is getting the delayed treatment too but here's to hoping for a great next episode nonetheless.

this show has a lot going for it but I hate the stupid lipstick on the main character it is very distracting and make him look totally stupid. I know it is supposed to be an authentic character reference but it was a very very dumb idea. Into the trash bin with this one for me.

The idea of this show is kind of intriguing, nothing super special but fresh enough. What turns me off are the inconsistencies all over the place and the characters, that are comically over designed. Jing is especially egregious when put against the down to earth realistic designs of her parents and the little native girl is basically a running stereotype. It would make more sense if the whole world would be a bit more wacky, but only the main characters seem to have been given the wacky design treatment.

All in all the designs of the important characters clash horribly in the otherwise realistic look attempt of the world.

Probably the worst looking PA Works show I have seen so far.

It seems that the language barrier doesn't exist in this show. Still, the language barrier issues doesn't stick out as a sore thumb as badly as Vinland Saga back last year, though, but for here, it very apparent. XD

Either way, our misfit duo and their constant shenanigans are amusing as usual. Thanks to that, they were able to break into the race track and get along with Jin Xia Lian, despite causing her to crash one of the race cars thanks to Appare wandering onto the track with virtually zero lighting at all.

Jin's backstory is a little sad. This show is set over 100 years ago, so the standards of men and women were VERY different to what they are now in most modern societies. Appare's questions at Jin were very spot-on, though. She shouldn't be stopped from chasing her dreams just because of her gender. With her talent of driving, she'll be a tough competitor to beat in the upcoming Trans-America race.

Overall, this was another enjoyable episode. Soundtrack is superb, the characters are still enjoyable and the production values so far is far better than Fairy Gone. The user above me disagrees, but I guess there's always a critic, huh? ^^;

This would be fine if it was in a fantasy setting, but wanting to maintain the historical setting while making everything else anachronistic just ruins it for me. Gintama did it fine why does this show insist on it being late 19th century America with no language barrier? And Jing would have been arrested for public indecency wearing that, you couldn't even show a belly button on tv until the 1970's, though I guess everything else about the era is being ignored so why not....

Translation. Subpar and unworthy, as usual. Hopefully the translators start starving during this pandemic, or the quality will never improve. One example - 6:00 when the boxer challenges the samurai, he says "Even though I am rotten I am a former boxer". The translation completely foregoes this implication that he was a boxer once, and now fell to street fighting for a living.

This series will not take itself as a serious historical work of art. Unfortunately. The characters are able to converse with each other during the times of lack of education, being from different countries. I understand it would take considerably more effort to properly intertwine the cultural and social contexts into a singular narrative, but, alas, this is not going to be the case.

Absolutely. It is a shame that works with only half the effort are being accepted for adaptation.

Nearly dropped this, but this ep got better. Mc design is still unsettling to get used to, but at least Kosame & Xialian feel like real people with insecurities.
And now the race connects to their goals instead of just randomness like ep1.

Great episode, better than the first.

A bit irked by the weird state of the world at this period of time. Not so much by the look of the cars which can be written off as part of this show's creativity, but more about the diner (yes, it's a trivial thing lol). Diners of that architectural style did not exist until the 20th century.

But besides that, this episode was fun. Still feel bad for Kosame and not being able to go back to Japan quickly where his father, sister, and fiancée are waiting. Felt bad for Xialian when she felt that she was going to get fired but I had an inkling that the car was going to be fixed by Appare, and apparently it runs even better now!

I don't think it's just about gender for Xialian, but maybe also race? This is a long time ago in the US and we already saw how some were racist towards the native Americans (that boy, I assume, is native American). Perhaps Xialian as a Chinese immigrant is also facing that treatment.

Overall, fun show. Can't wait to see the next episode.

I'm really liking the direction the show has taken. After Appare and Kosame find themselves stranded in America, they find that the only possible way home is by winning the big race, which obviously kickstarts the main story. It's looks like it will be awhile before the big race starts, though, so Appare and Kosame start wandering around and get acquainted with some of the supporting cast. Even though Appare won't be the show's everyman (that role will be fulfilled by Kosame), I do enjoy his interactions with the supporting cast. They encourage his better qualities and keep him grounded. It's been only 2 episodes, but right now, I'm enjoying the show and I can't wait to see what happens next.
