THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Seiya is really starting to grow on to me as a character more and more now.

While the mood wasn't very cherry the first half of this episode, he brings in a dramatic side of the anime that I welcome.

Really curious to see how the club will focus on their future. I feel that Minato has also grown to me as a character that opened up more to others since his debut. Glad to see these guys still keeping in shape.

lol @ megane guy putting too many spice like powder.

While getting PE outfit, main guy overheard the teachers talk about revenge.

Megane guy noticed main guy's thinking something.

Old photo of coach's grandfather in young time with a girl...

Main guy and coach had same teacher, who is the old lady who appeared before.

Same archery... and she knows his grandfather well.

Grandfather died when he ran away and lost his will to do archery.

Then ep.1.

Revenge = to proof that he is not like grandfather said. But now he needed to know grandfather.

Adults are not so mature as they see, huh.

5 guys suggesting coach to visit grandfather's tomb.

Driving over 10 hours... (lol @ Tweets mentioning it would be faster to go on trains, why chose driving instead)

It was the shop owner who told them that the coach caught up in accident...

Thank God for more Masa-san in the moonlight, that man is something else.

This episode had beautiful visuals, and I didn't think I'd like the character drama as much as I did.

The ending fucking killed me though what the hell man! Ah well, it was an interesting twist but Masa-san-

I was having a bad feeling during the second half of the episode and then that ending happened. lol I was thinking something bad would have happened to the teacher after he met with Osone but it seems like it might have happened before he was able to meet him.

If it's an episode focused on Masa-san, then it's wonderful. <3
I foresee my tears in the next episode.

One more thing, and I've always wanted to say this : the sound effects used in this show have something sweet in them. I don't know how to describe it but I can definitely say it's different. Has anyone noticed?

KyoAni puts more effort into sound effects than basically any other anime studio I can think of. Well, for TV anime anyway. It's pretty awesome

How convenient, having a car accident right before the tournament. I swear they keep adding drama because why fucking not smfh.

They better not fail the tournament because I'm going to flip tables

That's another way to increase the drama in a show, hope Masa will be fine and the tournament doesn't become a mess, I'd like to see all of them competing in the final against Shuu's school.

Also, hope Minato will be back in the end, maybe this incident would help him recovering from his target panic

Hope it's just a minor accident. If it were something life-threatening, the shop guy would have been more delicate in delivering the news, right? I also hope Masa is not hurt in a way that could prevent him from practicing kyudo;0;

I love this anime. Can't wait for next week.

Uh, they included the trucking. But they changed the episode so much that it basically stopped being an adaption... really an odd choice.

"Yo guys, your important tournament is about to start but wait, Masa-san had a car accident, don't panic! Especially you Minato, since you were the one who encouraged him to go, stay calm!"... lol.

It was nice to know some more about Masa-san's backstory. And those scenes of him under the moonlight were just... In the end, it was a good episode although that way to conclude it was unnecessarily cliche.

Also, hearing Minato talking about his mom made me feel a bit sad, being honest. I wonder what was what he wanted to say to her...

That was some really good character drama all around. Great stuff from Masaki's end. I wish they did a little more showing instead of Masa just spewing it all to Mikado like that, but eh time constraints and such. I liked Seiya's character a lot more this episode as well.

I was expecting to get to see Masa's interaction and such with his gramps friend, but instead we get car accident on the way back. Did not see that coming. I'd say he'll be fine but I'm looking forward to the next ep anyway.

Some parts made me slightly uncomfortable.
Minato's old teacher talked about Masa's past in front of Minato. It is hard to talk about your deep insecurities, so it was such an insensitive decision on her part. But then, Masa talked about his insecurities in front of Minato, and even told him everything later. That felt like a stupid decision. Why would you talk to someone so young, when there are people older and wiser than you?

Minato told about Masa to everyone. I didn't like his actions, but I liked that for once he did something an actual teenager would do. It seems Masa didn't mind it. That was the part that had made me uncomfortable. Everyone's actions could have been called insensitive, but they could happen in real life. However, Masa's reactions felt really unrealistic.

I love what Seiya had to say about being an adult, but I wish the youkai-sensei had said that. It was kind of the same speech that he had given in the last episode.

I think I should probably accept Seiya, Minato and Shuu as more mature than the other characters. That way, I will like the story more. (Maybe they read a lot of novels and books, and are actually wiser than the others.)

What a great episode, and what a great way to start it! By letting us get a glimpse of Masa-san's perfect body. lol

But well, at least Seiya's petty hate was useful for something. Thanks to it Masa-san was able to properly look at himself again, and to try and face his demons. And yes, people have many facets, but I just hope this won't end up with him completely forgiving his grandfather. Even if he was a 'good' person, and/or if he truly loved him, nothing changes the way he treated his own grandchild when he needed him, and even before it, so letting go of the past would be for the best, but hopefully not by blaming himself for distancing himself when he was mistreated.

And I loved the little coincidence, and how he opened himself up to Minato, I just dislike the way Minato just told everyone else about Masa-san's personal matters. I can understand wanting to hear other opinions to find a way to help someone he cares for, but it was still wrong. At least he said he was sorry.

Now I will be dying till the next episode wondering what's going to happen with Masa-san. I hope he is fine, and able to make a full recovery if he got badly hurt. But hearing this right before the tournament might make Minato, and the others, too worked up to properly shoot.

Goddamm. I JUST made my list of top anime from 2018, and Tsurune was first in my runner-ups, but shit, it actually beats Voilet Evergarden down a peg imo.
The character development is amazing. My heart was exploding when the team were telling Sensei to go talk to his grandfather's friend. And Minato talking about putting off telling his mom about kyudo and then she passes away in the accident, that was too much. And then suddenly "Sensei got into a car accident!". Jesus christ.

How's that going to affect the team and tournament participation? Good lord. And will Sensei die???

I've called Masa-san Sensei in my mind since the beginning. He's permanently Sensei to me lol

Wouldn't that "fault" be the author of the light novel and not Kyoto Animation, unless the deviated fromt the story.

This episode is largely anime original, yes. At this point they are just following the story's basic template.

Seems Seiya's words had quite the effect on Masaki. Its nice to see the strong bonds that exist within the team. Masaki's past must have been quite the surprise for Minato. Quite fortunate in that Masaki ended up meeting not just minato but also his master as well. Still the meeting proved to be most insightful for it provided some interesting info on Masaki's past struggles. At the same time it also showed that even he can have problems too. It was nice seeing the team do their best to help Masaki as well despite how close the tournament is. But man that ending though was quite a shock.

I really loved this episode though that ending made me gasp. I loved the conversations. Masaki treats Minato as an equal and I love how Minato talked with the guys and how they feel and how they perceived older people and it is so very true. I know old people who are very much the same cheeky youngsters in their heart and mind. This is something that a lot of people forget. What the... Masa-san got into an accident?! Oh no... I hope the boys, especially Minato, won't blame themselves.

Still, what a good episode. Masa-san has been carrying that burden all this time. It's really hard being an "adult" and I can relate because... no matter how many years pass, you still think of yourself as a child, trying to chase the "adult" that you have to be. It was good that Masa-san got all the support from the people around him - from his students. It was nice to know that it was because of Minato that he kept playing archery.

Seiya might've said that he "hates" Masa-san, but keep in mind that he said it with a genuine smile, and in this episode, it was shown that he also cared for his coach and respected him. Show my best boi some slack. And anyway, since he was honest about it, it lead to Masa-san reflecting on himself. I think that was a good thing.

Also, Minato has been opening up more now, thanks to Seiya. It was good that he has grown to rely on others. Keeping it all to yourself is really suffocating. It was a good character development on his part. (I saw comments here saying that it was wrong on Minato to tell the others, but that lead to the team fully supporting Masa-san which the latter really appreciated. And I think they had to know anyway. Masa-san was greatly cheered up by them.)

Hope everything will be fine. It was really bad since Masa-san was supposed to face his past, but that accident had to happen.

Bruh, Seiya is the most mature character in the show.

I'm also of the opinion that the Kyudo shop guy shouldn't have told them about Masa until after their match... This guy has the maturity of Oonogi or worse.
