THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Wow, the way they treat Ash is really indiscriminate. It's like his some sort of lap animal...

Either way, he deserved better. This episode was tense. It focused on Ash but in a vulnerable state. On the other hand, that video of Ash was teasing the security guys iwas hilarious LOL. I love how he draws attention like that in a deceptive way.

That scene was sooo cringe. Why keep scenes like that when there is more important stuff to show? They didn't even finish volume 10. I'm still not seeing how they are going to cover the rest of the manga in 9 episodes, even if they do cut out a certain character.

Anyway, the best part of this episode was any time that Yut Lung or Sing were on screen. I'm glad they finally let Yut Lung say something in Chinese.

I get everyone's concern over how they'll manage to fit the rest of the manga in the remaining episodes, but cutting out the candy bar scene wasn't going to help them finish volume 10 in this episode either way. That scene took about a minute of time. Meanwhile, the rest of the events of volume 10 will take a least 5. They kept all the important parts anyway; in fact, very little was cut out this time around.

we have been tense all the time. the way they treat Ash. It's like his looks like an animal lap..and we did not like it. we are worried about how they manage to insert the whole manga in just 9 episodes. for the rest it was really good.

When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

This scene of the manga is one of my favorites from it. In terms of Ash's character development, Golzine's character development, the symbolism as Golzine's shadow looms over Ash and the artistic composition of light and darks of the page. I think the anime seriously screwed it up. No shadows nor close up of Ash's face and sketchy art too boot.

Otherwise, I really liked this adaptation. They gave Ash back his 200+ IQ.

RIP Ash's look-a-like for doing nothing wrong.

Oh gawd, that scene was legendary! I couldn't stop laughing watching Ash's act XDD I though Ash was going crazy but he deceived those officers like a piece of cake. Smart move Ash!

Nice episode! :D Can't wait to see Ash's great and successful escape.

Omg, that scene was my favorite, so cringe but so funny at the same time, the episode was so tense that in the end this was the only moment that they let us breath.

Anyways, since everyone is so talkative about things being cut from the manga where do i start?, is there enough cut content to make it worth starting reading it from chapter 1?

Oh God. I didn't think candy bar scene could be more embarrassing.

Uh, anyway! I loved this arc in manga, it was so creepy, I almost felt like it was me who was being locked up in some weird research center. Anime lacks this, at least for me. And they cut out some scenes that I really liked.
But whatever, they've kept enough to make me happy, for example Max saying that Ash is like a son to him, it's probably one of my favorite parts in entire Banana Fish. And we got more of Sing and Eiji! Oh, and Yut-Lung. I really loved this scene when he lets Eiji "kidnap" him.
Now I can't wait for the next episode because of a certain nurse... :D

Considering that the manga is set in the 80's and has a very different vibe to it, I think it's best to start from the beginning, especially if you want to get to know the side characters better. And you can always skim past parts that are exactly the same as the anime.

Every week somebody asks this question and each time I say "YES". There's enough differences and so much cut from the anime that you should start from the beginning of the manga. First 4 volumes' art is rough but it will get better.

I can’t believe the security guard could be that stupid. Wasn’t he told this kid had a 200+ IQ? But tbh even if he wasn’t why would you put your precious “candy bar” anywhere close to someone held captive? All he’d have to do is bite that shit off. What an idiot.

Seems Ash can turn anyone a little gay. One thing I found kinda weird was when Ash was gonna get operated on I was like "oh shit", but then Golzine shows up and he's all "oi, don't do that to my hunk" and I'm like "oh shit Ash is saved", but then CIA guy shows up and is like "you're not the boss anymore", so I'm like "oh shit", but THEN CIA goes "btw, don't operate on him" and I'm like "???"

The way the scene was set up made me think CIA was going to overrule Dino to show he's not in power anymore. I guess I missed why CIA doesn't want the experiment to be done on Ash.

Well he did send him to heaven in 5mins!

I see Sing has replaced Shorter on the series and the gang, but I still prefer Shorter though. I see Golzine has faith in Ash to escape that mental institute, all in all I don't think Golzine hates Ash in fact it's the opposite.

Great episode.

I'm ashamed to have thought that Eiji would just despair with the news of Ash's supposed death, but he was fast to act, and got his freedom, even though it wasn't really smart because he didn't have a plan of action, and needed to be saved by Sing later, but it was still great. And poor Yut-Lung! He has a similar background to Ash, but he doesn't have someone like Eiji, and his presence evokes those feelings in him, I don't want to see him fighting Ash, but I guess it's truly inevitable. Sing truly cares about Yut-Lung though, I wonder if Eiji told him the truth about Shorter's death.

And Max was so brave! Facing Dino, and saying that he was the one that published that news, and stuff, I love him! But what's the deal with Dino? He's a despicable, disgusting, unforgivable fiend who doesn't deserve anything but pain, and death for ruining, and scarring the life of many, but it seems he's losing power now that his accomplices can go through with their project without him, and he didn't try to prevent Max, and Ibe from trying to rescue Ash. I mean, he's finally being more fleshed out, but I still feel kind of mad with this.

Just to be clear, Dino is not being "redeemed" at all. This is not like what they did with Ash's craptastic bio-dad. Dino just doesn't want other people getting their hands on his special boy.

Eiji was in Yut-Lung's custody as long as Yut-Lung let him go and he was later saved by Sing. So as everybody knew, Ash wasn't dead, he has been sent to a mental illnes laboratory where they're gonna use him to test Banana Fish. All this while Max try to figure out what's going on and finally discovered where he is. Golzine lost some power over the department in charge of the lab and visited Ash. Finally Ash made an attempt to escape.

Interesting episode, it's more about story development. I still can't understand the relationship between Ash and Eiji and Eiji's reasons not to go back to Japan. I mean, does Eiiji think that he can save him from his way of life?

Interesting turn of events here!

Ash being taken to this mysterious facility where human experimentation particularly of B1, the Banana Fish, is present just reeks of bad news. I really got bad vibes throughout the first half, but the hilarious ending just goes to show how much of a genius and a stubborn kid Ash is. I hope to see him successfully escape from this facility now. Meanwhile, Ash’s supposed dad seems to have figured something out, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s got in store for us. On another note, it was nice to see Eiji stepping up to try something.
What was with that creepy confrontation between Ash and Dino though? It was creepy, even though all he wanted to address was for Ash to regain back himself. It just really gave off an eerie vibe.

There's a quite a bit of development in this episode even though its not particularly heavy on the action.

Eiji has certainly changed since episode 1 - it was very unexpected to see him holding Yut Lung hostage like that which shows he's adapting to the world Ash lives in.

I'm glad we got to see more of Sing as well, not sure what it is exactly but he's such a sweetheart and yet he's forced to act beyond his age. Although the scene with Ash goofing with the guards was funny, I found it rather disturbing that he had to use his body in such a way to get his plan going. He has done so in the past as well, but perhaps it was the hospital like environment which made it harder to digest.

Also, slightly off topic, how long has Eiji and Ibe been in the states since their arrival in episode 1? Just trying to figure out the time scale and my impression is 2/3 months but could be wrong.

Damn Ash's IQ is actually 200. Back in my university days, our professor's friend came over once. She came from a wealthy family. She graduated from Cambridge and earned her master's and PhD in Harvard. She had a high IQ too around 180 or more. Then they talked about her brother who dropped out of school but he had an even higher IQ (around 200 or more) but he didn't "act like one." He argued with his professors in university and got into trouble for 'embarrassing them' during class. Which is why he dropped out. He experimented with drugs to the point of passing out on the streets, traveled around the world with money he buskered and lived on little and would come back home looking dirty like he didn't take a shower for months. Basically what I'm trying to say is you never know what geniuses really look like. After he got clean, he returned to the UK and earned his degree and graduated summa cum laude, he wanted to be a professor to spite and out perform his former professors.

Anyway, that candy bar scene was funny. I am reading the manga and enjoying both the manga and the Anime adaptation. People say they should've kept the 80s theme but I think the producers thought people would not be able to relate if the series was not up-to-date or modernized. They even included smartphones in Cardcaptor Sakura recently but in the first Anime, only Tomoyo had a huge ass cellphone that impressed Sakura but now everyone has one.

About 8 months. They arrived in March at the story's start and Ash turned 18 that August 12th. Now Arthur died on Nov 1st and Ash has been in the hospital/held captive since. I have been trying to break down this new 2010s timeline myself since the original story starts in March 1985 (12 years after Griffin and Max were in Vietnam in 1973).
