I couldn't help laughing at that part either. Just love the dead pan humour in this show, VAs are doing a great job. Though like the physical humour too, didn't see Togame's face as a kick off wall coming. Love this couple :P

As much as I love dialogue-centered shows, this gets stale at some point. They really should add more fights or at least lengthen the fights so they're not that anti-climactic.
Shichika's becoming a lot more likable and I loved the meta-humor and general weirdness, but it's not quite enough for a 50 min. episode. Still has plenty of potential, though.

So I guess one Maniwani head will appear in each episode and get killed by someone every time. All 12 of them are probably total weirdos. I guess they will be something like Team Rocked in Pokemons.

Anyway, this was a nice and enjoyable episode.

I really liked this episode. The duck ninja was...interesting and there were several funny moments. I didn't get bored at all while watching this ep but that may be because I am easily amused ^-^
Wouldn't call this the best of the season but it is up there, DEFINITELY above Sora no Woto.

First of all, am I the only one that still feels that as far as colorful design and plot that it reminds me of the Muramasa video game? I'm suprised not a lot of people say that about this show, which is what I like about it.

Second of all, ........am I the only one who is fucking baffled that the 2 main characters spent 10 minutes talking in the desert about how to make the "report" sound as entertaining as possible?! I mean... they sat walked in the sand... just talking... throughout the day... where there is no water in sight... and thus there mouths should've been dehydrated... and yet somehow they weren't. And not only that, ...but it's sort of the strategist's fault that even happened because she was so bent on how to make her report sound interesting. I thought strategists were suppose to be... well... strategic. I know the desert itself didn't seem all that hot, ...but still, I mean come on!

And also, is it really necessary for Togame to use a term like "cheerio" in every other one of her sentences? It's one thing girls in anime nowdays habitually use unexplainable terms/sounds in their sentences, but does Togame have to be so self-conscious about using it? In fact, what girl in real life actually says a certain term in much of her sentences in real life?

Shichika and Togame's relationship sure is something. Probably one of the better couples this season and totally outclasses shit like lolzBundlovetriangle. Shichika is an enjoyable main character devoid of many of the generic main character tropes we see in every anime out there recently and Togame is a refreshing quirky female lead. The hair training is pretty amusing and I wonder what strange things those two will come up with next.

Has it never occured to you that applying reality to anime isn't such a good idea? : o
I realized that only a few days ago, I wonder in what show that was.. Oh well, there was somewhere that I tried applying some physical laws to explain something.. But that failed miserably and I realized that reality + anime just doesn't fit together xD

And btw, yeah I actually know a girl who behaves kind of like Togame, when it comes to using a so-called catchphrase, all the god damn time. Sure gets annoying after a while, trust me.
Protip: I don't really check the forums anymore, so if you want something, take it on my profile.

The best part of the episode for me must be the flaw in Ginkaku's drawing sword that he can't draw up straight. I was like why no body has ever thought about that. That was just awesome and weird at the same time.

Uh, fuck no?! If I watched an anime the first time around in which stuff that made no sense occured, I would think "cool, the stuff in this show makes no sense!!" But after the next couple of times of watching this anime, you then realize, "UGH, the shit in this show makes no fucking sense!!"

The final battle between the two was by far the highpoint of the episode. Not to say that the dialogue and interaction between Shichika and Togame was bad as they were quite good...though the talk time did get to be excessive at times. If they tighten that aspect up, it would make the show that much better.

You can feel the relation to Bakemonogatari in the amount of dialogue, but... it just doesn't work as well for me. Bakemonogatari also had points where I felt the talking dragged, but there was something unique and enthralling about it that I'm not feeling in Katanagatari. That's not to say it never entertained me, and it certainly worked better than the ninja's endless exposition in the first episode. Still, I'm not at all impressed.

Find something else to progress with the inside story...

So you're going to overlook the fact that he likes her because he knows her biggest secret, ambition, she likes to have a plan for everything, etc. as reasons for his liking her? You're also going to overlook that she dropped her anger after talking about having used her face as a wall because she realized that he did, in fact, have a plan as not progressing their relationship inside the story?

That doesn't really make sense to me. Because much more than the first episode, this one managed to do what many shows fail at: be self-referential without breaking the 4th wall, while progressing the story and characters.

Disagree if you want about the conversation over the report and the catchphrases being too long, but it's easily the most insightful look at how a the anime industry is going without directly engaging the audience in a slapstick-y way. Togame directly addressed the thought that Shichika is a pretty weak character. By doing so, though, the audience is quick to say "well, he's not that bad" and start thinking about what makes him strong, and certainly the way he engages Togame is proof in his strength as a character. Despite being as dumb as he is, he's still able to keep up with the conversation and be totally funny in his own right (poking fun at her lame catch-phrases)

It's this kind of well-written dialogue that I had hoped would happen after the exposition-heavy premier.

Despite the terrible conceit of these unbeatable weapons and the unbeatable Shichika, the show still manages to be entertaining precisely because of the dialogue and character interactions. There really isn't anything to gush over in the animation department, because the show is very static. We see more flashes of pictures than fluid animation, and in this episode, we didn't really see anything since the sword moves faster than the speed of light.

I loved the episode because it kept me engaged for 40 minutes when most shows can't keep my attention for half that amount of time.

You don't watch this show for the fights. You watch it for the characters and their interactions and talks. If you didn't figure that out after episode one well then I feel sorry for you
If you want epic fights that last longer go watch Afro Samurai or Samurai Champloo

For me this episode was even better than the first. THe whole Togame Shichika interractions were fun and yes I enjoyed the talks about the catchphrases also that last part at the end when Togame said Shichika has no need to think of dying words.

Not that I can honestly speak for everyone else, but I'm sure that not everyone who had a problem with the dialogue, wanted lots of blood, sweat and flying stunts instead. Some just wanted a know if there was a point to the half of what the characters were talking about as far as progressing the story. Some wanted to know if there was a point to talking about "finding a good catchphrase for Togame's report" while in the desert for half a day. I mean how is Togame's report even key to progressing the plot?

I think if you at the book, Animation Writing and Development - From Script Development to Pitch, and read the information about dialogue on chapter 13, then it might explain at least somewhat, if not a lot, as to why the dialogue in Katanagatari bothers so many people (me included).

I really don't see a contradiction between this anime and what I read in that book of yours... Besides, not all has to be a "key" to progressing the plot. The plot is not the center of an anime, it is not what makes an anime. Some of us find it interesting to see and learn more about the characters, their interest, stories, goals, personalities; even a seemingly pointless dialogue about catchphrases can prove very captivating and reveal much about the characters or even the story.

Maybe not an "anime," but plot is definitely important for telling an animated story regardless. Particulaly one that develops. And the whole point of the dialogue chapter in that book I showed was that it showed essential guidelines to making dialogue, guidelines that the script of Katanagatari didn't seem to follow. One part of that chapter quotes, "dialogue should serve the plot. A good animation story has to keep moving. Don't let the words slow it down. Words are one way to tell a story, but conversation should always discolse tidbits that the characters must tell each other, not just information that you as a writter want the audience to know."

So case in point, I would wonder how finding a catchphrase helps serve the concept of finding the 2nd sword in their agenda. I would

You're gonna need to explain to me how else "cheerio" helps reveal Togame's character other than that she thinks certain terms are cute and that she says it when she's angry for some weird reason. Or why for that matter she react by saying "gyafun" after being kicked and falling on the floor.

Well, everyone won't find everything interesting about a show, Hypeathon.

As far as all of your other complaints go, I'd direct you to my post in reply to um_esper above. Dialogue serves many purposes. Progressing the plot is one. On top of that, dialogue serves to characterize players and relationships, and even progress them. Furthermore, dialogue can be a direct outlet for a writer to express a point of the show that the characters/story cannot do.

The dialogue in this episode did all of those things. Whether or not you recognize this is your issue. Whether or not you like/appreciate it is your prerogative.

This series still sucks in my opinion. The excessive talking in every episode kills it. Not only does it go beyond the point they initialy try to get accross but it instantly turns into rambling. Hell the main character even points this out several times and just starts agreeing with the girl to shut her up. I still cant get over the graphics either. Like everyone else mentioned, I think the only thing that was good in this episode was the last 3 mins where they fought each other.

Yea, I'm with others. I love the dialogue, I think it makes the show. If you've read any of NisiOisin's novel's, you'll know whitefox is spot-on!! His books are nothing but dialogue, but fantastic dialogue. That's why they're so good, and why this is so good. The whole point of this story is not to see a bunch of fights, and to collect all the swords. It's to see this "back-country bumpkin" grow out of his shell, and experience the world to make him the man he is destined to be. And, to see what happens when you put him and a nut like Togame together. I for one am loving this show, I can't wait for more...Urahara Out!!

I actually enjoyed the conversation about writing the reports, and all of the nonsense about characters and catchphrases. I was actually surprised at how short the action was, and to be honest, if they want to spend 80% of the show talking, I'll watch it if it's interesting.

I should add that this is not a good show to start at 3 in the morning....it knocked me out in 5 minutes. Second attempt when I was awake and alert was much more successful.

This whole episode reminded me of ]b]Terminator 2!! From the time Shichi went to get some clothes, to the time he fought those rapists, all the way down to when they were talking about all the catchphrases and such.

Shichi = Arnold Swarzenagerdafasdf as Togame = River Phoenix. All we needed now was "I'll be back" and "Hasta la vista baby"

Shichi does act a lot like an android. Not knowing alot of crap but highly efficient. I really REALLY love this one hour format. And that skinship scene.. effing hot. This has equalparts chemistry, action, comedy.. man i really stumbled upon something epic here...
