Disclaimer: I have a naturally argumentative personality. I absolutely never mean to offend anyone. I just like semi-heated discussion.
With that said, I've been watching anime ever since I was little. My babysitter owned box sets of Ronin Warriors, Voltron, and Transformers, so there was no escaping the tractor beam that is anime. The first series that I remember watching on network TV was (and is probably the same for a lot of people my age) Sailor Moon on Fox. I'll always remember my first...
Anyways... I hold anime to the same standards as regular TV and Film. I'm also little picky about presentation. There has to be consistency in character design, and expressiveness. For me, when I find interesting characters (and I tend to hate or not care about 90% of scripted characters), I'm hooked. I can forgive a lot of things if I'm in love with characters (i.e Naruto). But on the flipside, it's hard for me to overlook stereotypes.

that episodes, has everything, it's extremely well directed, introduces all the main characters, opens a mystery and has two small plot twists. in what way is the episode bad?
well you could say the characters didn't interest you but is it really fair to judge them by one episode?
every plot point in steins gate matters so i can see why you might find the episode confusing at first but bad? not even close
just think about it, almost every show above 9.0 on my anime list is either a shounen or a movie, there is a good reason that a si-fi seinen with a slow start is in the top 3 for almost 10 years.
also what if gto is a horny straight man's of heartfelt comedy, it doesn't mean it's bad.
also you say gto is a 6 for it not having a proper overall story and having one dimetional side characters. but you gave haruhi a 9, now i love both, so it's wierd to me why you think one is almost a 10 while the other is just above average
