The animation and art direction on this episode was insane, I've seen lower quality for movies, let alone TV-airings.
While the OP and ED are very "modern" thematically, I really dig how they were structured.

Looking forward to see if this level of quality stays consistent

the art style and fluid animation are the selling points for me, the premise is decent enough to keep me watching as well

Ehhhhhh i don't know, i'm not feeling it, not a fan of the yaoi undertones and not a fan of the premise overall either. The character expressions were also a little bit too exaggerated for my liking. The show looked great, very vibrant colors, but not sure if that's enough for me, will likely check another 2 eps before i decide whether or not it's worth to continue this.

I was pleasantly surprised how all around great it was. It was vivid and beautiful, but when it time to came for things to take a turn it didn't pull any punches with the brutality. Medieval Japan is endlessly fascinating and I will happily take whatever medium I can get that explores it.

The priest is a bit mysterious and sometimes funny but really more obnoxious and over the top than anything. I'm hoping we get a more tolerable balance. Tokiyuki's situation is definitely interesting and that wonderful scene of him escaping death showed he's actually got some skills, but I'm not actually invested in his success yet. He was still a goof off and his father a blanked out puppet. Ashikaga may be a ruthless traitor who's hearing voices, but who's to say Tokiyuki's restoration would be better for the land in the long run. Hopefully it'll delve into all that.

I'm excited for the next episode and it's taking a lot of willpower not to just hop over to Wikipedia because these names sound familiar and I think I know how it turns out in a big picture kind of way.

Episode 1 was amazing! 💯🔥

I always love watching historical shows based on Japan. And the MC is based on a real life samurai.

The animation is very sharp, fluid and beautiful. Well it's studio CloverWorks, always the top tier animation.

OP and ED song and visuals where great. We have DISH// and Botchi Boromaru for it.

Aside from being a funny show. Lot's of blood and killings from what I see.

Nakamura-san got another vibe character. 😂 Also kind of cool.
Oppai check!

I was going to write what I like about this first episode, but a lot of people have written about that so I'm going to put this here.

They knew exactly what they're doing. Shota fans eating good.

Whoa. I really like the opening, and the ending is really good too.

Stories about revenge are always interesting. Especially with the historical background of Japan. Tokiyuki is really fast! He can dodge all those samurai slashes quickly. Awesome. While Yorishige is a bit suspicious but I feel that he will indeed serve and accompany Tokiyuki anywhere even to hell. Still episode one but I can't wait to see Tokiyuki face Ashikaga Takauji...

Oh and yeah. This is made by the same mangaka as Assassination Classroom, right? Can I expect a fun and touching action in this too?

The Houjou Regency has always been a favorite of mine It caught the times with the treachery of Ashikaga and the mass suicide of the Houjou at the end of the Kamakura Shogunate Glad our boi chose to live another day rather than die with his family and clan

Absolutely excellent image quality, with surprisingly high animation as well. On top of that it was a very interesting and exciting first episode. Definitely one I'll be keeping a close eye on this season.

@MeanEYE The very first chapter is as fast paced as this. So don't worry about the rest. :)
@KuroCiel so far this is the most interesting one of the season. So I'll keep watching, at least for a while. Can't say past year was great when it comes to anime. Very few shows of note.

Went in blind.

Charming start :)

Then it gets BRUTAL 0_o.

Then it gets goofy again...

What happened to the bastard son though? Did they show what happened to the older brother (illegitimate firstborn)?

The transition from the ball being kicked and lost to a head coming down was impactful to say the least. Also, when the priest threw Tokiyuki down into the village with the savages it reminded me of people being thrown into the water to learn how to swim. Anyways, the production values are high and it reminds me of Apothecary Diaries in that respect.

Except it looked even better than Apothecary diaries imo

This first episode was amazing to me. Gorgeous art & animation. Characters that instantly exhibited their personalities traits. Opening scenes that deftly informed us of Tokiyuki's family and supporters. While also setting an atmosphere of peace and luxury. and simultaneously
giving the 101 on the real historical situation. Then, with a few quick strokes, it all comes crashing down in blood and fire.
I hesitate to make quick judgments, but this anime bids fair to be one of my all-time favorites.

This was quite interesting. I also don't really know yet what to make of it, what kind of tone should I expect because it felt like it went swiftly from light fun to dark tragedy and then somehow to light fun again, moving in between without hesitation. It is certainly intriguing, not a fan of some of the stylization in here like the voiceover narration inserts but it worked in a quite smooth way. I still don't know what to say about the shota baity elements, they don't bother me but they seem put there just to stir the pot and add some spice to the story and characters; let's see if the resulting jokes don't get old too soon with the creepy weirdo vibes of the priest character. Anyway, fun first episode with quite remarkable production values.

It's Year 1333 Nanboku-cho era.
This period of time is a bit unusual in Anime, usually i was only familiar with Edo Period, or the modern one like Meiji, Showa.

Plot was simple to understand, Animation was Fire 🔥

Bruhh that ED visual and song didn't match with the tone of the Anime LMAO

Very cute and dynamic beginning, there are some interesting directorial finds and some very nice camera fly-throughs. At the same time it is disappointing to see empty faces of the characters in the middle shots, as well as static shots. But I want to know what will happen next.

It has been a while since I watched a stereotypical shounen. (Frieren and Domestic GF do not count.) The start feels like it's something about being a mischievous boy but it gets dark quickly. (At least he won't get married to that fugly, and perhaps there's a chance with that cutie.)

He avoided lessons for the aristocrats.
Ironically, his running way snd being elusive will help him become a hero.

It has an interesting visuals. I haven't seen Assasination Classroom, so I can't say anything about that.

I've been watching anime for the last ~20 years, and it's rare that something still catches my attention, but from this first episode I'm excited for more! This seems refreshing and it's well animated, Hojo Takatoki is absolutely adorable, so happy to have a sexy shota protagonist. Suwa Yorishige is also a fun character and I like his chemistry with Hojo, this first episode was well paced, had good dialogue, and pulled me right in, you can tell when an anime has been created with real love and attention to detail, and this anime has it.

This might be like one of the only shows this season that has really gotten me hooked. I need more! This season has felt really underwhelming so far, just like the previous one, but I'm really interested to see more of this!

Also wow that got really dark 0_o It was so lighthearted, until that cut with the ball and then showing all those people, including those two guys who chased Tokiyuki around, and even Kiyoko. I think that's the first time in a while that an anime has given me chills like that lol

Definitely going to be sticking around for this one!

What a awesome start! The protagonist mischievousness and talent for avoiding people is charming and just felt natural for his age. His happiness is just contagious. I already knew that the second he wished that living in peaceful life would last forever, it won't, but opposite. and sure enough it gets darker fast, but what I didn't expect is while everything gets bloody and gory, it was still able to retain it's humour and face faults, a very disturbing sense of humour, or maybe it's not supposed to be funny but rather an artistic presentation but still disturbing regardless. Kinda reminds me the beginning of arslan senki but better version.

Based shotakino on the telly.

Also, I need to state another time that every single individual, like me, who always claimed that A-1 was the worst studio in the entire fucking industry much to the seething and rage of idiot A1 followers, are once again proved to be right again to an absurd degree with this new show as a proof.
CloverWorks has never.EVER made better looking anime than when the studio quit being a subsidiary branch of A1, and meanwhile A1 Picture is still pumping the most soulless piece of garbage looking shows ever, Cloverworks has been pushing the bar forward in terms of avant-garde animation styles with shows like Bocchi, Akebi, Wonder Egg, Shadow House and now the Elusive Samurai. The same way Wit giving up on AOT was the best thing that happened to both the studio and the industry, Cloverworks leaving A1 is the best thing that could have happened for them and their spectators.

- Trap main character, love it :3
- Running scene was cute
- WOW, the ball dropping and turning into a severed head was unexpected, I thought this was gonna be a wholesome show
- That got dark so fast…. I feel bad for him not being able to die with his family, it’s gonna haunt him

I was waiting for this to be a adapted because it’s written by the same author who wrote assassination classroom and that was my first subbed anime and i really loved it, especially the ending.
I really like this setting, but i do have problems when they get too political so i usually focus on the character motivations. The main cast looks promising and i really wanna see in the span of two years what will the main character do that will shake nippon. Talking about how the show looks i love it, i love how it’s drawn and i don’t mean characters designs, the specific colors used to draw the anime, it looks and feels so good and the animation is also great. It’s cloverworks, last season they adapted wind breaker which i would argue looks worse as compared to the first episode of elusive samurai. I just hope they don’t make one season and just never adapt the rest.
The show is promising and i really liked author’s other work so i am gonna watch it.
