The Jump Super Stage Red at Jump Festa 2024 announced on Sunday that the television anime adapting Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga is receiving a remake titled The One Piece by WIT Studio. The new anime series will begin from the Higashi no Umi-hen (Eastern Sea Arc) and is set to be released on Netflix.

Oda began serializing the adventure fantasy manga in Weekly Shounen Jump magazine in July 1997. Shueisha shipped the 107th volume on November 2. The manga has over 500 million cumulative copies of its volume in circulation. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English and released the 104th volume on November 7.

Synopsis
Gol D. Roger, a man referred to as the "King of the Pirates," is set to be executed by the World Government. But just before his demise, he confirms the existence of a great treasure, One Piece, located somewhere within the vast ocean known as the Grand Line. Announcing that One Piece can be claimed by anyone worthy enough to reach it, the King of the Pirates is executed and the Great Age of Pirates begins.

Twenty-two years later, a young man by the name of Monkey D. Luffy is ready to embark on his own adventure, searching for One Piece and striving to become the new King of the Pirates. Armed with just a straw hat, a small boat, and an elastic body, he sets out on a fantastic journey to gather his own crew and a worthy ship that will take them across the Grand Line to claim the greatest status on the high seas. Already said this in another thread, but the prospect of Wit Studio releasing seasonal instalments of a 1000+ episode long series is still comical and highly unlikely. It very obviously looks to be an ONA in the same vein as Pluto, where a batch (or batches) of feature-length episodes are released simultaneously on Netflix.

A remake of an anime that is still running? First time I've seen this (in fact I think it's the first time they've done this lol), whatever God wants...

not needed, but alright.

This is ONA so if it adapts the east blue saga the episode lengths will probably be longer.

@Softhenic03 Well, Digimon already got two remakes of the first two generations, so why not, lol? In any case, it’s time to say that the fashion for remakes has reached the point where even actual seasonal shows are getting one.

@jorel262 Very smart move from Netflix - this will be exclusive to their platform (or they will get paid if it gets broadcast elsewhere), and by starting over from the beginning it's going to rope in a TON of fans of the live action and casual anime fans who were intimidated by One Piece being over 1000 episodes.

This is literally the latest thing I would ever think about. I could expect a remake when the series is over but now? Totally random.

Well, I guess it would be nice to have the East Blue Saga fully updated in modern animation since many flashback scenes or arcs have already been remade through future episodes or movies.

Still surreal to see that this is happening lol. Especially after seeing people suggest a remake by a different studio for years and thinking to myself "yea right like that'll ever happen." Whether it's a partial re-adaptation or they end up doing the whole damn thing, I'll be there to watch.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

@ANTITHE5IS It's not based on the anime so they'll probably need "only" 300-400 episodes..

I won't doubt this being amazing but the anime is still ongoing and honestly there are other awesome mangas out there that need to get adapted. Titles like Fire Candy, Vagabond, Dolls, Five Star Stories, or Red Eyes need adaptations. The past few years we've been stuck with repetitious isekais and lackluster remakes that watching them is literally getting tedious. But whatever makes Netflix more money I guess is the way to go.

Hopefully its not a 1:1 adaptation, the recent arcs in the manga has been abysmal. This should be great for new viewers though.

Hopefully this is better than the way toei adapted it. I love the anime as it is but it’s very slow paced and sometimes a chore comapred to the orginal source material.

I’m way behind on one piece, I’m on the prologue of fishman island both the anime and the manga

This remake might be for people like me specifically:

- Likes WIT Studio
- Knows nothing about One Piece, other than it's popular and looooong
- Only vaguely interested in One Piece, and getting into the anime or the manga in 2023 feels impossibly daunting
- Zero interest in live-action One Piece, despite the universal praise; the trailers just look terrible to me

You have my attention.

Not sure how to feel about this, given how much source material there is I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it gets skipped. Personally I'd rather see an announcement for a re-adaptation of one of those old series where the original adaptation went completely off the rails.

Well good for those who wants to start One Piece without suffering its horrendous pacing, though I'd always recommend watching the original since there's quite a charm here and there. IF they're remaking the whole series until the very end, it would take about like 15-20 yrs (or even longer to deliver much quality), while the manga and the original run of the anime series has ended already in the middle.

This is just not sustainable btw. One Piece would take hundreds of episodes to adapt, so if they want to keep a high production quality, it'd take them like another 20 years to do it all. That's assuming they'll keep a schedule to allow for constant high quality, otherwise, what even is the point of remaking a show that isn't even finished?

@Ionliosite2 They are releasing around 25 episodes per season, improving animation quality and pacing. The plan would be to make it more watchable for the general public, its not "not sustainable". And they arent going to do the whole series they would probably stop around the time skip

@AwNoodles That's a nice argument, how about you back it up with a source? Literally nothing mentions such things as it being 25 eps per season or that it'd stop in the timeskip, that's just your hopes. And even then, at 25 eps per year, it'd take them like a good 10 years to make the whole thing, so the issue of it being insustainable remains.

Things I would like to see as a "newer" one-piece fan that has caught up to the manga:

• I have not finished the Dragon Ball series, but I assume it would be how Kai was to the original anime. Dragon Ball Z was a masterpiece in the eyes of many, while Dragon Ball Z Kai just cut out a lot of the fillers and streamlined it to fit more with manga pacing. (Would sadly cut some fun fillers like G-8, but I think that would be worth it)

• I hope the animators take their time to craft this remaster. One piece being notorious for its weekly broadcasts, it doesn't always give the anime time to breathe. PACING is a huge issue always discussed by the community, and this is their chance to fix that. WIT has a great track record with the likes of AOT, Vinland Saga, Spy x Family and more so I hope the team just lets the anime flow properly so that it's an enjoyable watch for One-Piece fans and first-time watchers alike.

• Expanding on the previous point, I would much rather prefer a seasonal broadcast than say a week-to-week basis like it is right now. Sure, this will take much longer, (I think that's already expected considering how long the franchise has been around) but again BREATHING ROOM. I would much rather have a consistency of the team's best work, than rushed, burnt-out story-telling and animation.

I'm excited to see how this turns out, and hopefully, it ends in my lifetime 😭. But I think this is an amazing way to bring One Piece to a new audience with a new dawn of romance and adventure with the future pirate king. Those are just some of my thoughts, but I'd love to see what you guys think.

@Gar_Logan that's what Netflix want. They want the rights to earn bucks from the work of the japanese people by presenting a version with their own trademark and their own american™ flair on it, every single move of this platform in the anime and toku field has been motivated by this very reason. Every anime turned into live action, any CGI remake/continuation, every tokusatsu turned into CGI abomination like the Ultraman crap they're continuining to churn out well knowing tokusatsu fans don't particularly see in a good light full lenght anime renditions of tokusatsus, all aimed at making an american-lead, american-focused rendition of japanese properties that are currently popular hoping that they can make them their own thing and profit from them. I've been thinking and writing it for years at this point yet nobody seems to be of my same opinion but whatever, I'll repeat it nontheless: Netflix are the continuation of the same, exact mindset that spawned the likes of Harmony Gold by the real-world criminal Frank Agrama, Carl Macek, the turgid regurgitations of the Sentais, the metal heroes franchise and Kamen Rider by Saban Entertainment and the godawful Godzilla: the king of monsters movie of 1956. I sincerely don't understand this need of the american conglomerates to make this kind of Cultural appropriation while slapping their copyrights everywhere while being particularly defensive against the use of their OWN AMERICAN IPS againt the infringment or use by anyone or anybody outside the US. Try to make a 100% copy of Superman, Batman or Mickey Mouse while hamfistedly putting your own trademark on it, the american lawyers will beat your ass until you, your parents and your 5th generation grandchildren in the year 4000 will starve to death, while if the american businessmen do the same exact thing with people outside the US everything is OK because the capitalist cowboys dominating the world are right in doing so because they say so. I don't understand it. Me, I would NEVER recommend to ANYONE to watch the turkish Star Wars or the Japanese one (apparently, it exists) over the original american one, so the same applies to american-approved, american-tailored renditions or reductions of Japanese medias that are not respectful of the original sources made with the ONLY reason to make quick ca$h on the work of other, foreign people.

And believe me, I love some american medias (not all of them, of course) like I love the Japanese ones, like the japanese ones do (I've seen more tributes to the american superhero comics in the tokusatsus than I've ever seen in american mainstream comics). Hell, I prefer american comics to the japanese ones TBH. But this shitty domineering obsession of the big TV/movie US corporations that don't give a fuck of anything except slapping their own brand on something of foreign production just because of quick ca$h producing unnecessary, unrespectful crap inbetween is ridicolous and annoying, as annoying in 1956, the 80's and the 90's as it is in 2023.

@Ionliosite2 I just saw it somewhere I am assuming that is what they would do, and once again how is that unsustainable..? Having a series you can run for 10 years sounds like a dream for studios, why would you not want a long running anime? And it makes sense for them to stop at the time skip cause that is when the animation quality really took a jump so it doesnt need a remake. I don't know why you are viewing this so negatively.

@AwNoodles A series running for 10 years inevitably would lead to a drop in quality in animation because the schedule of pulling out a season every year for a decade is not something you can keep in high quality, I called it unsustainable because if they can't keep said quality, why even bother?

@Ionliosite2 So you reason why its unstable is because the quality will jus decrease as time goes on..? I mean AOT seemed to fair well over a 10 year span. So its unsustainable because you assume they won't be able to keep quality? Yes we don't know much and its not confirmed how many episodes a year they will do nor how many, and even if the assumptions i mentioned before were wrong, its a pretty unnecessarily negative outlook on how the series will turn out like the people creating it themselves dont know how to manage releases of their anime

@AwNoodles AoT is exactly an example of what I mean, the quality in animation drops by the middle of the third season and it gets worse from there. The companies not knowing how to manage their releases happens all the time, you can look at JJK S2 for a recent example, where episodes are finished hours before airing because of how terrible the scheduling is there. And again, the number of episodes is something you're pulling out of your ass, so that's not me being negative that's you making up stuff.
