The first episode screened at AX. This show was on my radar, but I didn't have high expectations for it. But the premiere blew me away. The characters, comedy, setting, and premise were very strong from the start, and the animation was very good too. This might be a good contender for the sleeper hit of the season. It has definitely shot to the top of my personal rankings, that's for sure.

Novelist Yugo Aosaki's series is in a sleeper hit predicament, just for its uniqueness.

The OP is trippy and catchy in a good way, and from all places, it has to be K-Pop girl group CLASS:y. Same to the ED as well.

In a fictional Meiji era of Tokyo, monsters from the likes of ayakashi and Oni are all slain by a man they call the Oni Slayer, the move of the Great Purge being an entertaining aspect. But in reality...it's all a laughing farce.

Venereal disease strikes at the core of the Oni Slayer Tsugaru Shinuchi, though he lives up to his name when the deed calls for it. And it just so happens that a maid is looking for him, though the birdcage is of interest, seeking for his killing that despite all the power she has, she can't quite stop him. The maid of Shizuku Hasei carrying the head of  Aya Rindo showing themselves to the half-human, half-oni Oni Hybrid, wanting to strike a deal to help extend his life...by killing her.

Tsugaru thinking that it's ventriloquism, it's not, because Aya was once a whole human, that some fool took off with her entire body, leaving her severed talking head intact. Though she can find a way out to kill the Immortal through Tsugaru, it's a possibility for someone who wants to die, but yet, also wants to live. Of a body that consumes as much power from killing oni, Tsugaru makes it a lifegoal to give the people what they want of entertainment and excitement, at the cusp of his death. Still, with the hope of getting her body back, Aya insists that Tsugaru kill her, despite Shizuku just being a puppet to tag Aya's severed head along.

With the mind analytics of Aya and the provident skill of Tsugaru, they both can become a formidable duo, and the deal is set to go to Europe to find their common enemy. As to how to extend his lifespan, consuming her bodily fluids through a kiss, it's the kiss of death that would kickstart their relentless journey together.

Even though this doesn't quite follow the novel's (or rather the manga's) starting point, this seemingly anime-original premiere is intriguing enough for another look. Definitely keeping an eye on this.

The OP is really good. And, that was such a great and strong start to this story. I hope it stays like this. A strong production as well. The Direction and Storyboarding were so good as well along with the action storyboard. I already like all the characters. Aya is cute and Shizuku looks badass and then there's Tsugaru. A fascinating character. I'm looking forward to more of this. That last scene was majestic and kinda beautiful when it's actually a kiss. That ED was so amazing as well. Gonna be the one of those less talked about shows of this season. I hope I'm proved wrong. I'm very intrigued by this show already. Off to Europe.

Bodily Fluids? Don't mind if I do, my lady.

This has the makings of a sleeper hit, and with Shinichi Omata, the director of Kaguya-sama directing this, it looks great already. In a world of monsters, the Oni Slayer, Tsugaru Shinuchi, is one that performs for a large crowd, killing the monsters in the process. He's a hybrid between human and oni, and one false move will have the monster inside of him consume him. Luckily for him, he met Shizuku, a maid and Aya, a severed head in a cage. Aya has the power to extend his life by having Tsugaru consume a part of her, and a kiss sealed the deal for them to travel together to Europe to find the man who wronged them both.

A great premiere episode, one of the best anime so far this summer season in my opinion, with a very unique premise. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on this as a possible anime of the season pick.

I'm loving the dialogues in this series. "My nasal mucus, or my saliva?", "The saliva, please!". 🤣

I only have one question left. If the maid could kill the "Onis Killer", then why doesn't she kill the immortal? I believe that, as a puppet, she should not have the freedom to perform this act. It's what I think. I'm also enjoying this series for the camera angle decisions the director is using. They are interesting angles.

I already love this! I didn't think I was going to enjoy this one that much when I first read the synopsis, but this may end up being my favorite of the season next to Vending Machine, and maybe JJK. I love these characters so far and the whole idea of the show. The one thing I don't like is that now I have to wait a whole week for the next episode lol I need more!

Nevermind people paying to see Ayakashi get beaten to death, the crowd wanting a cat dead is a clear red flag of a bloodthirsty society.

Promising start. Didn't expect such an interesting premise with competent direction. This might be worth finishing if it can follow up. OP already a banger, nobody can take that.

Thanks! That information had escaped me! She is not an Oni! This just got more interesting! Thanks for guiding me!

That's really interesting! It's something I didn't expect but it's interesting. I like the mysterious atmosphere, and what stand out the most is the kiss, it looked charming even if it was just a glimpse.

But why only bodily fluids? She didn't allow her eyes, ears and brain... then shouldn't her hair be allowed? Although I'm not complaining about it, it was beautiful (and kinda reminded me of Celty and Shinra, hahaha).

The OP is also catchy, the first time I heard it I thought it sounded like a kpop song and sure enough it was sung by a Korean girlband. The ED is nice too.

Nah this one might be different. Idk how to describe what I just witnessed. Sleeper hit of the season loading? Almost feels like a Fena and Revenger mix.

Haven’t seen a first episode this intriguing and fresh in a long time.

Hatakeyama(Kaguya director) snapped on the direction of this episode. So many cool shots and unique framing compositions that added to the conversations. Kurosawa Tomoyo’s work as Aya was great and she flows really well with Yashiro Taku’s Tsugaru. Their banter really carried the episode. Shizuku’s seiyuu shined in the few lines that she had too.

I love a good adventure story set up too. Travelling to Europe to find her body and stop this mysterious old man sounds like it’s going to be fun.

This was such an engaging premiere. Though reading the premise one would question the sanity, but it isn't at all as odd as it sounds.

Liked Tsugaru and Aya's convo and them going back and forth every other minute. There wasn't a dull moment, even if all they did was talking. Plus the immortality themes are a kind of my thing anyways.

Now with a common goal, and a totally-not-normal kiss.. I mean with a severed head, that's VERY RARE, they onto their european trip. Off to a really good start.

An intriguing start. Don't know why so many watchers enjoyed the OP or ED so much, I find them pretty average, but the show itself is interesting enough. The voice acting has a lot of personality and the animation is good (though the compositing is not always grandiose). The direction is interesting and there's a real atmosphere. I'll give it a try, I guess.

The moment when the snake lady stuck her head through the door, randomly spitting at our guy, without any commentary ...I was sure this would be right up my alley, at this point.

That scene cracked me up xD

To be completely honest I thought that the dialogue was trying too hard to be quirky or weird, but well, I don't know what to expect from an anime with such a weird premise full of unrelated classical fictional characters. The visual direction is indeed very impressive so I'll keep watching, really looking forward to the appearance of a certain detective and his doctor sidekick lol.

It was just a single episode episode, but... usually when I have a good feeling about the trailer, I end up liking a series/movie/etc - well, I did like the trailer of this series a lot, and this episode was pretty entertaining. Decent animation, nice music, intriguing characters, plus I really liked less usual shots - would be nice to see a similar approach in more anime.

I won't be surprised if this ends up being one of my favourite anime of 2023.

Side note - I guess I'm a bit naive, because at first I was sure that she would offer him her hair, haha.

Animation, and thus budget, is very well done.

Hints at violence to come.

This is Akiba Maid War level of intrigue.

Studio Lapin Track....never heard pf them, but they are not new, but looks like they very seldom put out shows.....may be a studio to keep an eye on.

There is so much to say. The male lead is interesting. The dude has a slouch like no ones business, and his personality is weird. A person who lives on both extremes, to say the least.

The immortal chick is weirdly cute and wow, how creative that she travels the world through a birdcage. Symbolic of her life as an immortal? As for the episode, they did a lot of talking, and it looks like this is going to be one of those shows you watch twice to catch the subtle details. But it's an interesting premise and something I wanna watch more. I look forward to what the show brings next.
