Just thought I'd ask to see where people would have wanted the series end. Some people are complaining about new sequel, most are hyped, but what is your stand on it.

Personally, I think it should have ended with Rebellion, it would have been an amazing bittersweet ending, but I haven't even watched this and only vague theories will show how movie 4 will end.

Rebellion is personally my favourite ending in anime so I don't think it's necessary. However the writters have been working on this for years so I'm excited to see where they take it.

Rebellion clearly paved the way for a sequel. It was pretty obvious that it was gonna come sooner or later.

Personally, I would have been fine with it ending after Rebellion. Heck, I would have been fine with it ending after the TV series. Both were good endings. But hey, as long as they can make money with Madoka, they'll keep doing so.

I don't mind it though, not with this show. A sequel definitely still has a place here (much more than Code Geass, for example...why would you destroy the best ending of all time with a super unnecessary third season, UGH).

I feel like the answer to your question depends almost entirely on how the next movie is gonna end. How could we know which ending we prefer if we don't know what is going to happen. I feel like the series and rebellion had perfect endings on their own and the story could've just ended on either of them but I'm happy that we might get something new.

ps. I don't really know who is complaining but that's just dumb (at least to me) because if you don't like it you don't have to watch the sequel or am I missing something?

The anime had a perfect ending that needed nothing else, while Rebellion's ending screams for a sequel. The third movie was never necessary, but after it, the fourth movie is extremely necessary to close everything that the third left open.

Is it necessary? Maybe not, but I do want to watch it anyway and it might impress me a lot just like Rebellion did.

If they keep up the same level of production quality and writing, why not? Rebellion had a satisfying open ending and the story is still promising.

It'll be fine as long as they don't do...whatever was done with Magia Record. That is something that really doesn't "need" to exist.

Curious to see the outcome, but apprehensive. I thought the series and sequel film were very good, but pretty simple in their premise - the series wrapped things up well and the sequel did an interesting job of developing things by exploring why the solution reached in the series was imperfect, but I wonder if a new film could be stretching the material somewhat and might convolute things. We’ll see, I suppose

Rebellion was the sequel that wasn't needed, the story I love and consider "Madoka Magica" Ended with the TV series.
That said i'm still interested enough to watch this movie.

I'm convinced that the only reason that Rebellion ended the way it did with
was because of greed (money).

Think about it:
Wraiths still exist, but that's hardly a reason to make a sequel.

But instead of a nice and clean ending, we have an open one with
and thus the story is now incomplete.

All that being said, since all that I have to go on is the title, I'll reserve all judgement until I see it I assume the plot has something to do with "Walpurgis", the witch who is ultimately responsible for both Madoka and Homura's fateful decisions, so I'm interested to know more about it. Who is this witch? What kind of wish did this girl make to become so powerful?

Personally I thought Rebellion was a fulfilling and highly cathartic ending to the series. I would honestly have been satisfied if we never got a sequel and if this sequel doesn’t live up to Rebellion’s quality, then I’ll just pretend it never happened and that the ‘canon’ (as far as my brain will be concerned) story ended at Rebellion anyways.

OMG! WTH is this!! I'm super hyped and scared at the same time! Don't screw up one of my fav Animes of ALL TIME!!

But how could you possibly follow up such a perfect ending that it's also open ended and cyclycal.

I'm going to take a complete guess here and say that this movie will be based on the background of the other witches that we never saw. Like Bebe that only people who played the obscure PSP game know about and it's a wonderful/sad story and Walpurgis that we know NOTHING about.

It could also mention the other girls witch forms and maybe go from there? I don't know if they should touch on Homura since her ending was so bittersweet and cathartic that it was a masterpiece of writting BUT maybe if they could redeem here and join forces with Madoka that would be pretty epic...

Please don't F this up!!! xD

LOL money, sorry but I never disagreed more with anyone in my life. Rebellion is perfect writting and it's the OPPOSITE of what people who want money would do. If you live in America then you would know of Hollywood and Disney, in order to make money they make the most generic movies that would appeal to as many people as possible and put story LAST. All fluff and no substance, the complete opposite of Rebellion that makes fans claw their eyes out with despair as they watch it.

That's a common belief, but it's an unfounded one for a few reasons.
1. Gen Urobuchi has always had full control over the story. If he wanted to end it that we he would have and no one would have stopped him.
2. If money was what they were after why did they wait so long to actually make the movie? Makes no sense if your goal is to milk a series for all it's worth.

Money is always a factor in almost anything's creation, but it's not the only one or even necessarily the most important one.

A sequel is definitely needed. Even Rebellion's ending is set up to be continued. This ending left some problems unsolved.

1) When Homura was confronted by Sayaka, Homura said that she will possibly destroy the universe after all the wraiths are eliminated. This shows that this newly created universe is definitely temporary.

2) One day Madoka will become Homura's enemy. Homura said it herself. This is a foreshadowing that will surely occur and needs to be concluded.

3) Is Madoka truly happy? You may say that Madoka is happy because she is with her family and friends. In the flower scene we even got to see her saying how happy she would be with her dear ones. But who doesn't want to be with his own family and friends together. It's a common wish that almost everyone wants.

Throughout the whole original anime series, we saw how much Madoka struggled finding something she can be help of. Even on episode 1, before she knew about witches and stuff, she didn't seem happy. She was very insecure and unconfident. Sure, she was together with her family and friends but still was searching a way in which she could be useful to others, a purpose. That's the main conflict of the first season. That's why we saw how Madoka wanted to become like her senpai Mami, a magical girl that helps others.

At last Madoka made the decision of becoming meguca. She knew she was going to be forgotten and away from everyone but chose to save everyone because that is what makes her happy. Helping others makes her life fulfilled. The problem is that this decision was kind of forced, since she definitely needed to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone. And that's where Rebellion come into play. At the end Madoka seems to be happy but is definitely struggling with that same conflict she had at episode 1. We could see it in her conversation with Homura, suggesting that Madoka has a duty to fulfill, something in which she can be a help for others. At the end Madoka is not truly happy, neither Homura.

I think the main TV series ending is enough. It's heartwarming and bittersweet, but Rebellion is also very, very good, being able to expand the story and characters to unlimited potential. Still, it's clear we need a Rebellion sequel, and I'm very excited to see it!

people are really stupid, why are they worrying over this getting a sequel, i watched the tv series and thought well that was conclusive, then saw the sequel and wondered why it was made. Watched it and i was in awe that how can someone make thing better than the tv series, they managed to make a fantastic sequel out of a completely magnificent ending. So i am just hyped they are releasing a sequel and ready to be mindblown by the sequel.

I don't think so, and I didn't think Rebellion was needed either after the series ending. It still was a lot of fun. The Madoka universe is great to play with and reinterpret, and in case I have to, I can always choose the canon conclusion that better fits my tastes.

So I'm looking forward to whatever exploration this movie makes and whatever conclusion it extracts from the concept.

I hope Gen Urobuchi makes an excellent movie, although I doubt that it will be at the level of the original series.

I thought the series had a perfect ending and didn't need a sequel.

I watched the sequel expecting to hate it and think it was pointless.

It was amazing.

The ending was perfect. It doesn't need a sequel at all.

I'm honestly surprised that no one has ever mentioned anything about a 4th movie supposed to happen like 7 years ago, did everyone forgot about the concept movie short? This has been in the works probably since Revelion was released and intended to be the closure of the series.
I've been waiting for this since I saw rebellion for the first time, and I can't wait for it to finally happen.

More Madoka is always nice, but the TV ending was pretty much conclusive, yet Rebellion created a whole new scenario to explore with Homura's character.

I feel like the fourth movie wasn't supposed to take this long to come out tho

I don't know if any follow up or sequel is ever "needed" in any series. Its really up to the creator if they want to tell more to the story.

Warranted? Maybe. Depends on what direction the movie goes in. Rebellion definitely leaves room for a sequel but doesn't demand it. Madoka is the titular character, and her arc was concluded back in the main series. But Homura is arguably the main character of the series, given that everything stems from her actions and decisions. Rebellion just reinforced that notion. The series is meant to tell her story as much as Madoka's, and to that end the series could have ended everything with Rebellion and just left the last plot threads as open thoughts for the audience to sit with.

So if the follow up adds something substantial to Homura's arc or gives a satisfying conclusion to her story, the fourth movie is probably gonna be fine. Even if it just shows us the consequences of her decision at the end of rebellion, it would be fine from a narrative perspective.

Was Rebellion necessary? Yea I think so. Again, if you watch the original series with the lens that Madoka is the main character, then Rebellion is probably just an add on. But I don't think thats really the intention of the series. Homura is just as much the main character as Madoka is. I never thought the ending of the original series made a ton of sense for Homura's character, given that she just
Rebellion provides a proper extension of her character arc and resolves that part of her.

The original series delivered an incredibly satisfying ending. Rebellion didn't need to be made, but it nevertheless continued the series in a way that made sense for its world and the characters, and ended in a way that I feel provided a solid amount of closure to the story. Not sure what another film would serve to offer, but I'm nevertheless interested to see how it turns out.

Short input, a sequel has high potential to be very successful if it explores the consequences of Rebellion ending in the right fucked ways.
Rebellion ended it nicely in a way but also left me wishing for a sequel if done with proper respect.

I don't want to see Homura suddenly regretting what she did, please take it all the way, I myself ship Homura x Madoka very much, exponentially more after Rebellion, but this series has always been about delivering raw impact, I don't want them to play it safe and have a perfect ending of both together and all sunshine.

This shit took this long to be announced, hopefully meaning a lot of care is being put in the writing, thus mindfuck me as beautifully again and I will only give it praise...

Otherwise tbh, even if it ends sucking more than I would like, I will still consider it fanservice and enjoy it to the best possible (I want more Homura).

I m more a believer that Rebellion surpassed the original, to me, it was the climax of the whole series, what Rebellion did left a bigger mark on me than S1 ever did, definitely more bold in an ingenious way that left me divided, confused, blanked out, but also very happy to experience such a fine twist, carrying such weight, it was a huge gamble that ended paying full for me, definitely very polarizing ending, definitely not safe approach, and I only love it all the more for it.

Yes and no.
On the one hand, Rebellion’s ending was great, and since it is pretty much an open ending, the mystery of what the world may have become because of Homura was pretty interesting. On the other hand, Rebellion’s ending heavily implied this upcoming sequel as others said, and it would be great to know what this new world has to offer.
In the end, knowing whether the sequel is necessary or not depends on what will be delivered by this sequel, but also on personal taste. But it is definitely more necessary than Rebellion was, in my opinion.

It's the same question always, did we need Rebellion? Maybe no. Did we need Magia Record? Probably no. Do we need this movie? I guess maybe no. But do I appreciate everything that came after original TV series? Heck yes. There is a lot that needs to be explored in the Madoka Magica Universe, and it isn't forced by any means. There are no ass pulls. The weakest link in the universe is probably Magia Record, but still, it has some solid story and there are people who look forward to it, maybe more than original series. Rebellion was great, and this movie might not live upto everyone's expectations, but it'll be sight for sore eyes. Sure they are doing it to make more money, but that also means there are people looking forward to more Madoka Magica content, be it in form of Magia Record, or this movie. It's a sign that the fandom is still alive after 10 years, and just like Homura, I'd do anything to see Madoka again.

This also opens doors to unadapted material, like Wraith Arc and The Different Story, which hopefully, we might see sometime in future.

I think it's needed only for the sake of completion. Rebellion left an open door to a sequel, so I'd like to know how it ends.
But, I want to make clear that I've always thought that any extension to the story is only because of money. Despite being overrated, Madoka is still a good franchise and I wouldn't like it to be ruined because of greediness.
