----------------------------------------
Finally, the conflict between Princess Marie and Madame to dubarry came to an end. duBarry manipulated the king again in order to politically lay pressure on Princess Marie. At the 1772 New Year ’s Day, all the nobles in France visited the Versailles Palace for the new year greetings and that’s when Princess Marie broke her royal pride and addressed duBarry by saying “Happy new year, There are a great many people at Versailles today” in order to prevent a conflict between Austria and France and to restrict blood all over Europe. In this Episode dubarry’s evilness continues when she agreed with Duke D’Orleans to eliminate the Crown Prince and Help him in claiming the throne but fortunately the conspiracy fails miserably because of the Prince hesitation to pull the trigger of his maliciously altered fusil.
I will Try to realize my dreams with someone precious to me tomorrow.

These last 3 eps seem to be set up to build up Marie’s character, and set her up as a person worthy of Oscar’s admiration. Everyone goes about their separate schemes as Count Orleans attempts to kill the crown prince during a fox hot. LOL The joke is on him, with Oscar there, he can’t even get a shot off! And to make matter worse, he’s so lame and milquetoast that even when given the kill, he still fails to get off a shot and lets the tampered rifle fall and explode. Sigh

Though delayed for months on end, Marie finally has no choice but speak duBarry. She handles it well, publicly. But she breaks down once in her private quarters. Seeing how strong and honorable Marie is, Oscar starts to genuinely admire her. This is important b/c it puts her on Marie’s side not only as a matter of principle and for revenge, but b/c she generally cares for her. So eventhough nothing really pivotal happens (beside the super evil alliance of DuBarry & Orleans), that one little moment at the end made if all worth it.

Well darn she lost the rich snobby war that could have put an entire continenet at war, nuts.

Really I would have as my greeting "Madame duBarry I hope you have a bad horrible new year fit to your personality".

I mean really she was laughing manically at the end.

Well, du Barry got what she wanted, but for me it doesn't feel like a victory. But as long as she's happy and shuts up it was worth it.
The Crown Prince is really useless, so useless that it actually saved his life. lol.

However I hope I get used to the overdramatic fashion this series portrays EVERYTHING in. All those turning faces, dramatic music, etc, haven't seen it that extreme in many other series. I blame it on the time and the fact it's a shoujo :P
I probably regret this post by now.

The overdramatic feel of this series sometimes bothers me, but I thought the scene where Antoinette broke down crying and ran up the staircase was actually really well done. I hope the series gives me more of the greatness of the last 5 minutes, because so far the series has been somewhat disappointing. However, I can see how these last three episodes were necessary to build a foundation for the friendship of Oscar and Marie.

I loved all the neat effects they did in this episode.
I'd also like to think when Antoinette finally addressed DuBarry, she actually did just break out laughing and launch rose petals all over the place.

In the end a war was going to start and millions would die because 2 people would not say a word to each other. These petty things just disturb me to no end.

Then there's that laugh.

It's probably my knowledge of the French Revolution that's why I'm not enjoying this series at all. Everyone excluding Oscar annoys me to no end >__<

I waited so long for Marie's response! It's nice that they actually chose to let her say what is said the actual Marie Antoinette said to the actual Countess du Barry. I just hope that at some point Marie says "Let them eat cake!" That would be awesome! :D However, I don't see her saying that with her character right now. Not that this is a bad thing.
It's just so satisfying to see actual historic events (rumors and facts) taking place. I'm really enjoying this series! ^^

hopefully that's over with. i absolutely loved the first episode of this anime and i was so excited but so far it's letting me down. hopefully it doesn't follow the pattern of "bad guy shows up for a few episodes, then gets defeated...another guy shows up...etc"

also hoping for more Oscar now!!! thought she was the protagonist but i guess this anime doesn't really have one

Oscar, my dear, HAVE YOU HIT YOU HEAD?
Geez, the woman avoided a war over a cat fight, let's aplause her AMIRITE?
No, seriously, I do not buy Oscar respecting Marie over this.
If anything I would imagine that she would think that Marie should have done it sooner.

Oscar had a hard time letting her mother be a lady in waiting and risked a lot because of morals so I see her respecting Marie for sticking to her guns. I also liked how war was at risk of starting over something so petty, this fits my worldview that it's not direct malice and evil that cause so much strife as it is petty pride, and greed and ego.

I freaking love this show so far, it s over the top dramatic but in a way I find vastly entertaining.

I think the theme song about the divinity of the Rose being hat causes it to be both beautiful and fleeting is becoming an overall theme here.

The over-the-top drama hasn't been a hindrance so far, so I'm okay with it. The first five episodes have been good but nothing out of the ordinary so far, given that this series receives such a high praise.
Here's hoping the real stuff starts from the next episode.

Mmmh such drama just because you have to say hi to someone seemed a bit exaggerated.
people's mindset were entirely different tho in that period of time, so i guess it's not necessarily a negatif thing for this anime.

Oscar gaining admiration for Marie was a bit questionable tho.

I thought this show would be about Oscar, but apparently I was mistaken. How can Marie actually be more annoying than the King's mistress? Amazing.

Luckily this conflict is finally settled, with a loss for Marie, tho.

Think she was overreacring a bit over such a trivial matter, but back then things were quite different I guess.

I'm a bit bothered by the lack of consequences or justification being presented for there not to be any for the gun exploding, the maid being poisoned and such, though I guess Oscar's mother actually wasn't shown in this episode so there's still a chance for something to be revealed.

Other than that and some minor things, the series is pretty nice so far.

Maybe i didn't notice them before, but the art direction and effects were amazing on this episode. The colors and the shots for the dramatic effect... i loved them.

Also, many people seem annoyed by Marie and how bratty she is. I can kinda understand her pride, and Oscar starting to admire her for her dignity and pureness.

re-watching this anime after 10 years (if not more) reminds me why it was one of my favorites back then and probably, still is.
for 3 whole episodes we see the tension between Antoinette and Du Barry unfolding, slowly- this is what makes me so fond of old series- the slow pace. You see a conflict that could easily take less than 10 min to cleave and wrap it up in a modern anime, whilst back then they would dedicate 3 entire episodes- the pace feels so much more natural. some would call this way too plodding, i call it lifelike.

would anyone burst into tears and perceive it as a loss greeting an ex-prostitute these days? rarely, right? but for the crown princess this was an actual loss. luckily, she didn't do it because her principles weren't strong enough to withstand the pressure- not at all. she proved that what her mother, the Queen of Austria, has build and devoted her life to was much more of value than an ego-game between females (of different rank).

in my eyes Antoinette, despite her age, grew a lot as a character (choosing higher values over petty fights). a prideful brat turns into a woman with dignity and this is something Oscar noticed as well, given her decision to stay by her side all the years that have yet to come.
Du Barry, on the other hand, is as malicious and manipulative as ever.. sadly, more of a kid than her age- ready to walk on corpses just to win over..

as a sidenote for myself: didn't know females have/had such great influence over men.. but what can i say, maybe love is indeed blind(?) not sth i support personally.

Crazy french nobles, well glad that Marie was willing to swallow her pride and adress the prostitute. Still kind of funny to see the enormous drama on something so silly (from an outsider perspective) despite it possibly could have led to a war.

People complaining about the drama for only a salutation here have to understand that personal hierarchies, perceived dignity, personal pride and loss of face were a much, much, much bigger thing back then, specially in those circles, than it is now. So it is actually really well done.

I'm glad this conflict is finally over because I really can't stand Du Barry, and I'm looking forward to how the story will evolve now.

That said, I did like this arc, mostly because it really showed how much something seemingly trivial can have an enormous political impact. Marie-Antoinette refusing to talk to Du Barry can seem like just a childish fight, but Du Barry being the king's favorite means her power is very important, she can control how things go, and more importantly, going against her equals going against the king. It can turn into a war. I love to see the show pointing this out so early.
Another thing is Marie-Antoinette's reaction at the end, at first I found that exaggerated but Oscar's respect for her growing because of this reaction made me see it differently. Yes, it can seem exaggerated but from Marie-Antoinette's point of view, the shame isn't just on her, but on the entire kingdom, because at this moment she did represent the kingdom. For her to see things that way really shows that beneath the immaturity, she has the heart of a queen. I can't wait to see it bloom.

After 5 episodes, I already have a great impression of this show. It seems to put a lot of thoughts in the different characters and the representation of historical figures (even if I don't know how accurate everything is), the story seems very promising, and I have a feeling Oscar will become one of my favorite characters.
Now not everything is perfect, for example the feminine figures of the court not wearing wigs is inaccurate, Oscar's gender not being kept hidden is also bothering me, and sometimes, as expected from an old shojo, the direction is very cheesy... But not any of that ruins my enjoyment.

After this episode, I'm convinced that Madame du Barry really is a crazy one. How could she laugh out loud like that in front of so many people at Versailles? Even though she used to be a prostitute but now she is a Countess.. oh my. The way she laughed just showed her level.

In the end, Marie gave in for the sake of her mother and peace between countries. That's what earned her the respect of Oscar.

I thought the first 5 episodes were dramatic (to the point where I laughed at times) but it's very well-done so it's very exciting.

"The court is corrupt because a lower class sex worker is there!"

Yes, that's why it's corrupt. Not because of the huge wealth gap between the upper classes and lower classes. Not because the people were starving and in poverty, while you continued to get wealthier and throw more lavish parties and spend more money. It's because a lower class sex worker, is in good with the king.

Bruh... Madame Du Barry has a lot of reasons to hate her. She killed her husband for political gain, she was about to kill the prince (future king) for political gain. She killed her own servants, because of a petty cat fight. Yet those aren't the reasons that Marie Antoinette hates her. The reasons that Marie Antoinette hates her... is... because... she's... a... sex worker! ... Yeah, I see why the French Revolution happened, and I see why they beheaded Marie Antoinette and her husband.

And the fight between those two came to an end with the princess finally speaking to her.
Something that didnt make sense was the part of the assasinstion attempt, the rifle exploded but seems like no one, not even Oscar realized about what happened.
And now Oscar is completely on the princess side.
I'm starting to like the opening
