Mangaka: "You guys want a Spy story?"
Otakus: "Ughhhh, really? Bet it's going to be digustingly cliched."
Mangaka: "Well, let's reverse the personality roles."
Otakus: "Okay? Let's go home guys."
Mangaka: "You sure? I have an esper loli to spare. Oh! I also have an ultra-sexy hitman and a guy tsundere."
Otakus: "You what???"
Mangaka: "Wait, there's more. Did I mention this also sets in Cold War era with many bullshit shenanigans?"
(Weebs have entered the chat)
Weebs: "Give me that!"

An interesting take on Mr. & Mrs. Smith-style stories. The daughter, Anya, is the one who really drives the story. Her interactions with the cast are a delight to watch, and I always look forward to how she will nudge those around her into performing actions. She really is a child puppetmaster.
The "father" and "mother" are also superb, and make wonderful tsunderes. They are also quite competent. I really enjoy how even mundane activities are transformed into amazing action spectacles. The authors are really good at writing and drawing action sequences. In sum, this manga has a great mix of action, romance, comedy, and family themes. I ... Jun 9, 2019
Spy or Hitman/ “Pseudo Family”/ Comedy+Healing/ Tiny bit of Superpower
After reading the first six chapter, I am completely sold by this manga. Literally, this new manga is filled with surprises and explosive laughter; furthermore, my heart gets warmed with all those sweet “family” moments. With that being said, if you (a new reader who somehow picks up this manga) aren’t convinced by the first chapter, chapter two is the key person that will hand you the grenade ring to see if you want to marry this manga. !!Minor Spoilers!! YOU ARE MISSING OUT SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!
Spy x Family wonderfully exploits dramatic irony(when the audience knows something characters don't) to put forth a hilarious, thrilling and entertaining story. 3 Characters, a spy, a hitman, and an esper, each with their own agendas, flaws and secrets, are pushed with the common goal of needing to come together as a family. Will they ever find each other out? Will they stay together after their goals have been accomplished? What drives this story so well, is how the characters compliment each others flaws an needs. (the scene with the lady and the purse) -The spy is a very strict ... Jun 2, 2022
There is so much hype surrounding the anime from episode one that, when I didn't get it, I turned to the manga.
62 chapters in and here is my tally. Number of completed missions = 2 (boat mission, Tennis mission) Number of character arcs completed = 2 (The dog got an arc, the boy's sidekicks got a character moment) Number of side missions completed = 1 (Nightfall got some leads) ... Nov 1, 2023
Spy X Family, a review (as of Chapter 87)
Having dedicated a significant amount of time to catch up with "Spy X Family," spanning across its 87 chapters, I can't help but deliver a somewhat subdued verdict on this popular manga series. With a rating of 6/10, it firmly falls into the "okay" category, and here's why. One of the most glaring issues I encountered while reading "Spy X Family" is the prevalence of filler content and a heavy reliance on pure slice-of-life (sol) comedy. While humor and light-hearted moments are vital to any story, they need to be balanced effectively with plot progression. Unfortunately, this manga ... Jun 15, 2020
I'm going to keep this short since I'm afraid of giving out spoilers that could lessen the hype on reading it. (Plus this is the first time I'm reviewing a manga)
This is the first ever manga that I have read and immensely enjoyed and I honestly look forward to the future of this manga and where the fandom will be. Story- 10 The story is outstanding, as it best suites my taste in entertainment. It's just a simple elegant story of a spy whose assigned to a task to save the relationship of the east and west in order to bring peace to the world, however he ... Dec 14, 2019
I'm glad I came across this absolute gem. Throughout the 17 chapters, it got me smiling the whole time while invested enough to see where the story goes :) So kudos to Tatsuya Endo!
Story: 10 (minor spoilers) Basically "Mr & Mrs Smith" but with it also gives off some Harry Potter vibes for Anya's school part. I really enjoyed it and I really enjoyed the setting being heavily based on the West. However, what really gets me would be the way how the author changes basic activities (such as going on a family trip or dining out) to be such a huge deal within the family. This ... Dec 30, 2019
"Ooo Mr. and Mrs. Smith! Isn't this movie is too old for making manga adaption" said myself before starting to read. After that:
First chapter: Hmm, not bad at all. Second chapter: Ahaha, that was funny! Fourth chapter: Dude! This series's characters are really something! Eight chapter: I will buy its cover when it's released and so on. I didn't see any manga series with this much sincerity in a long time. I'm not person of long reviewsand some shinny words but this series attracts me more in every chapter. This isn't purely comedy series but you always smile when you are reading. This is not purely shonen series ... May 12, 2022

Anime Adaption: Yes (Available to watch on Hulu and Crunchyroll) Story: Such an interesting premise that is executed in a charming, hilarious, and heartwarming matter. Imagine being adopted into a family where your mom is a bad ass assassin and your dad is a bad ass spy. They may be the best at their profession but their hardest job is going to be navigating the world of parenthood and what it means to have/be a family. Very unique and interesting concept. Having a young and impressionable mind being able to read minds makes for an overall fun story. If you’re not into wacky ... Sep 2, 2019
Do yourself a favour.
Drop your family, drop your job, drop whatever you're doing at this very instant, so that you can sit down and get the chance to fully consume this delectable series, something of the likes in which I haven't encountered in recent years (if ever). I almost want to selfishly keep its existence a secret but art is art, and masterpieces such as this have the right to be exposed to the widest audience. Spy x Family follows an ordinary family comprised of a handsome spy (codename "Twilight"), his assassin wife, and an adopted daughter who can read minds. The premise ... Feb 4, 2020
As more and more chapters you read, you'll realize this is much more a slice-of-life than story driven, which I unfortunately dislike. SPOILERS ARE AHEAD.
Story: The story is really good, really interesting. You sort of wish they would all come clean to one another, but it makes for a fun read. I can see the child getting all of the stella stars being a majority of the manga. But there's just a bunch of other stuff that happens instead, and the story doesn't really go as fast as I like. Art: So. Damn. Good. Like really, the author knows how to draw people, and cute kids. ... Nov 15, 2021
since this my first review Ill keep it short The series is overall good, but the last arc was incredibly boring and cliche which is why I've put my review as a 7.
It does humor and family incredibly well with a good on the eyes very endearing artstyle, the action looks good but it has no substance or feeling, nor does it have any real tension which is why when the latest arc centered around it,It was dull unoriginal and boring arc with no tension at all making it feel hollow, the manga is incredible but its action is severely unoriginal with little substance it is not ... The story begins with an introduction to our main character Loid and his relationship with the overarching conflict that is present in the manga. Which is a cold war that plagues the world with the potential of escalation. And Loid, who is a world class spy is the one with the responsibility to save the world from it. His mission however requires him to go undercover with a family built out of people from the enemy country. And luckily enough he chose the oddest people he could find as a wife and daughter... And this family dynamic is the main selling point of the series

Honestly, I watched some of the anime first before reading, and boy was it whole different perspective. The characters are not plain jane, there is something exciting onto each character to make you remember. Plot is by its name, spy x family, I don't know why I thought when I was seeing this I was going expect operative, ghost in the shell esque, but it's like a cute cliche spy life. I love the character development and I believe the series kind of gives sufficient background to majority of the characters. It's always spicing up scenes, from like the fights, to just the causal interactions.

I will start this review by saying I got what I wanted.
Spy Family is the story of three people trying to live under the same roof while hiding their true identities and as the time passes they open up to each other. A cliche story we all know about but cliche is not a bad thing sure a work that always leans his back on cliches can never be a cult, but cliche doesn't make something shitty the important part is what the writer did with those cliches. And Spy Family's writer Endou Tatsuya did a good job with cliches. I enjoyed while reading those 40 ... Jun 13, 2022
TL;DR : a unique cute shounen, romance comedy with a fun story and likable characters. Really good series.
Spy x Family has garnered widespread popularity largely garnered by the overwhelming success thus far of studio wits anime of the series. I found the anime pleasantly fun, sufficiently inoffensive and overall would say I had a positive experience with the show. Certainly not the first-class masterpiece that some people were lauding it as, but certainly a worthwhile experience. However the lack of content in the anime left me wanting a little bit more spy x family; so I decided to read the manga. I can say that ... Apr 25, 2022
A spy story that is unique? Sign me upppppppppp! So i first got into this manga from a YT recommendation and I'm grateful i did because this is an incredible story with a lot to offer.
Story 10/10 The story is well thought out and simple, yet can be complex in between the lines. This follows Loid, the spy, Anya, the esper, and Yor, the assassin as they balance their secrets, life, and work. Every character and moment has a purpose that adds on to the story, it's not just there for the audience reaction. It's there to lead the reader on through the story without ... Jan 17, 2021
A FUNNY SPY STORY FULL OF MISHAPS
SPY X FAMILY is about a spy (Loid) going on a mission to preserve the peace between the East and the West. To achieve that goal, He needs to get close to the President of the National Unity Party, to begin his plans. And to work towards that goal, he must get a family in a short amount of time. Being a spy made him untrustful of others, especially with something so important as world peace. But luckily he is able to gather a small "fake" family with an esper kid (Anya), an assassin for a wife (Yor), ... Mar 1, 2023
Spy x Family is a series that most people have probably already experienced in some shape or form due to its overwhelming popularity, but if you haven’t read or watched it, I’d caution you before you dive into it.
It isn’t a long read and isn’t bad compared to what is out there, but it is an ultimately flawed series. You can definitely do better with similar series that are out. The story in the series is like a Drake album; it’s a safe ride with some extremely good bits and pieces, but altogether it just feels meh. The strongest moments are with the introduction (which is ... |
