That's why I love Mahiro Maeda. A short masterpiece with incredible visuals, direction, music and themes, that just comes together perfectly. With Yuasa's Happy Machine and Watanabe's Baby Blue, it really is a genius party :)

"Gala" has a nice concept and there's no denying that Maeda directed this short, with his typical drawing style and sense for powerful pictures (though it wasn't as energetic as his Anikuri short). There was also some awesome animation in it (impact in the beginning).

I was kinda worried when they all attacked it though then that concert they give it later was wonderful.

It is true the sprouting of a tree is magical.

Arguably the only work of "genius" in this entire compilation.

As expected of Maeda. Though I can't say I'm a big fan of the generic character design for the boy and shrine maiden-like girl that looked like it was ripped from a mainstream shounen show.

The imagery was aesthetically appealing, and there was some epic buildup with the music that made this plotless short fun to watch, though in its core, it was nothing but an ostentatious concert to get some seed to sprout.

Wow, that was amazing. Good visuals and art, unique character designs, great music, very interesting ending. Overflowing with creativity. So far my favorite of the whole collection.
I probably regret this post by now.

the kids still showed better use of color and were designed better than the average anime character, but I'll admit that I liked the designs of the old man and the random villagers way more.

Amazing stuff.

Clever concept, stunning animation and music and great direction; a practically flawless execution, I’d say. I really enjoyed it.

Oh I wouldn't expect that. The short film was really amazing. It was surely worth watching - the whole world was created so well and the ending made it a masterpiece.

The visuals and designs did feel like they were from a generic shounen manga. It was an ok story, but nothing special.

I felt a Miyazaki influence in this one, though I can't pinpoint exactly what gives me that impression. Great execution of a concept that's somewhat cliche by now, but at least relatively rare in anime. I was pretty skeptical of the work as a whole until the last minute, but I have to grudgingly admit that the final twist was enough to give meaning to the work as whole. It's not where my sentiments lie, but hats off to Mahiro Maeda for expressing himself so well.

A truly beautiful short, very enjoyable art and music.

By the way, did anyone get Evangelion vibes from the cicadas sounds in the end? I instantly remembered Evangelion because Maeda was directing the last film (3.0), and Evangelion has quite a lot of these sounds.

A little magic happening in a metropolitan area. At first, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't understand why all the villagers were trying to agitate this giant meteor-like object, and the shock at its subsequent destruction caused by its apparent birth was more confusing. I mean, what were you all expecting? Then suddenly, the goal was to calm the object with the power of music, which wasn't as bombastic or symphonic as I was expecting. It was actually rather toned down, despite the size and amount of instruments present. Still, it's interesting to see the mystical interpretation of a plant's germination. Nice animation though.
