Why should I not watch the previews? To put it simple, one will have a great deal of the show ruined by the previews. The previews bluntly tell you what is going to happen, unlike most shows which trick the audience in some manner. Why should I watch this anime? Legend of the Galactic Heros is one of the, if not most unique anime is existence. It doesn't hold the audiences hand while traversing through itself. It expects you to be able to keep up with its political intrigue and philosophical and moral dilemmas. It's an emotional rollercoaster that will leave you wanting more and more. In which order should I watch the series? One could watch any portion of the series and probably understand what is going on. The Side Stories are done in such a way that they will not require knowing exactly what has happened during the main OVA, or the movies. That being said, there are two recommended ways to watch the series; Chronologically and by order of release. Chronologically: Spiral Labyrinth (Side Stories / Gaiden 2, episodes 1-14) Valley of White Silver (Side Stories / Gaiden 1, episodes 1-4) Those Who Revolt / Mutineer (SS / G2, ep. 15-18) Those Who Duel / Duelist (SS / G2, ep. 19-22) Golden Wings Those Who Recapture / Survivors (SS / G2, ep. 23-26) Morning's Dream, Night's Song (SS / G1, ep. 5-8) A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights (SS / G1, ep. 13-24) The Third Tiamat Battle (SS / G2, ep. 27-28) My Conquest is the Sea of Stars Disgrace (SS / G1, ep. 9-12) Overture to a New War (an expanded retelling of the first two episodes of the main OVA series) Main OVA series G1 = A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights Gaiden G2 = Spiral Labyrinth Gaiden Release Order: My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (Film, 1988) Legend of Galactic Heroes, Season 1 and 2 (OVA series, 1988–1992) Golden Wings (Film, 1992) Overture to a New War (Film, 1993) Legend of Galactic Heroes, Seasson 3 and 4 (OVA series, 1994–1997) Legend of Galactic Heroes Gaiden (OVA side series, 1998–2000) Who should I be rooting for: This is something you will have to decide for yourself. Figure out what ideologies you believe in the most. There is no good guy or bad guy in this series. Just a million shades of grey. ((Note: Title is definitely up for debate. Any editing help or additions or corrections or whatever would be greatly appreciated)) |

According to wiki, in the order of chronological events taking part in the LOGH universe, this is the correct order of episodes: G1 = A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights Gaiden G2 = Spiral Labyrinth Gaiden Spiral Labyrinth (Side Stories / Gaiden 2, episodes 1-14) Valley of White Silver (Side Stories / Gaiden 1, episodes 1-4) Those Who Revolt / Mutineer (SS / G2, ep. 15-18) Those Who Duel / Duelist (SS / G2, ep. 19-22) Golden Wings Those Who Recapture / Survivors (SS / G2, ep. 23-26) Morning's Dream, Night's Song (SS / G1, ep. 5-8) A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights (SS / G1, ep. 13-24) The Third Tiamat Battle (SS / G2, ep. 27-28) My Conquest is the Sea of Stars Disgrace (SS / G1, ep. 9-12) Overture to a New War (an expanded retelling of the first two episodes of the main OVA series) Main OVA series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Legend_of_the_Galactic_Heroes_episodes |

highly recommend not to watch it in strict chronology. Just my opinion. |

Don't ever watch any show in a random order you came up with, watch stuff as it is released. If the OVAs came after the series, watch them after the god damn series, even if they happen before the actual series. Don't you think there is a reason for that? I watched Haruhi chronologically because it was one of my first animes and damn it sucked. |

well I think a better route is to go for the middle ground in this case. Watching My conquest is the sea of stars, then overture to a new war, before starting the main ova is better. These two movies are better introduction than the first few eps, your enjoyment of both the start of the first season and the movies themselves will be enhanced if you go with that order. Watch everything else later. Sabinlerose said: bump help pls. with what? I think you're managing things fine on your own :P |

Dive straight into the main series, you could start with the movie that gives you more detail about the first couple of eps if you want (MCITSOS? not sure if that's the one). In any case make sure you watch both Gaiden series AFTER the series as there are lots of things that happen in it that you'll only be able to appreciate afterwards. Strict Chronological order - you'll lose out |

For instance I maintain watching Haruhi in release order is the right way to go about things. If people were meant to watch Gaiden first it would have been released first, simple as that. If you start out by watching Gaiden you will miss a great deal of references to future characters in the main show that will just pass you by, essentially a lot of the gravity of the show will be sapped from it by your lack of familiarity with the logh universe. |

Apatch3 is right, the prequel books were also released after the main novel series was completed. Just like the OVA series, the reason Gaiden was made after the OVA series was because the Gaiden novels were still being worked on when the OVAs had already started. I sadly watched the show in chronological order (Did not know about the release order before hand), but I was able to see the references that were made because I have a good memory. :P Keep pursuing your dreams! ~ Wynn |

I'm on around episode 16 and its really boring, does it pick up? I think its the old animation that bothers me or something its just not capturing my full interest for some reason. I'm gonna finish it because it might be one of those anime where I realize its greatness towards the end But does it pick up? |

Op mentioned that he would take suggestions for the title of the sticky, so here goes: I was uncertain of the meaning of the title of this thread, thinking that it perhaps referred to the "Preview" movies of the series. This is reinforced by both the related anime list having all of these "Prequels", and the posts in the first page of the forum discussing the watch order of said Prequels, which could add to the confusion. Remember the majority of people will only see the title of the Sticky Thread, not actually read the pages and comments therein. Ofcourse now I am certain of its intent, namely to warn against watching the previews at the end of the episode, but I feel that the title could be a bit more descriptive to reflect that. While I myself avoid previews from any show like the plague, there is no doubt that LOGH has the biggest spoiler previews ever (I retroactively looked at some of the infamous episode previews, you know which one in particular I'm talking about) and as such every possible step must be taken to warn future viewers from potentially catasrophic spoilers that can ruin the show for many. As such the minimum change to the title should include "Don't Watch the Episode Previews". This is not extraneous or overly obvious, especially since the beginning of the title discusses the Viewing Order. If one erroneously reads/interprets it as "Lotgh FAQ and First Time Viewing Guide: Don't Watch the Previews!" then it could seem to indicate that the 2nd warning is directly related to the view order/viewing guide, as a succinct and summarial imperative to skip the prequels, atleast before watching the OVA itself. Sure the actual first post explains clearly not to watch the episode previews, but the title itself which is more important doesnt properly convey the message IMO. |

Golden Wings is optional, but if you can get over the animation difference and voice actor changes, then its best to watch it during the first season of the Ova as well. Unfortunately I watched Overture to a New War late in the Ova after the 3rd season, and eventhough I remembered what was going on and the characters, it would have been much better to watch it during the first season when it was more relevant. Watching the series again with Family, I followed a similar approach to Koreye, namely watching the first 4-5 episodes, folowed by the 2 main movies (not golden wings). This is the ideal way to watch things initially to maximize the impact. |

why not golden wings? and why golden wings first? after the first 5 episodes? because the overwhelming consensus of the fans (even the die hard fans) is that Golden wings is mediocre and doesn't add much to the literature or the background. Whatever backstory there is, has been covered in the OVA and movies in a much better way. Also, the Art, VA cast, and the overall aesthetics of Golden Wings is very different from the main OVA and the other movies. If you skip it you won't miss much as the background is covered in the OVA and the other two movies in sufficient details. Why golden wings first? you mean why I watched it before the other two movies? because chronologically its the first. you can watch it the way I watched it, or you can keep it simple and follow the order most fans would recommend (which is completely fine, don't fret over it too much) : My conquest is the sea of stars - > overture to a new war -> Main OVA |

koreye said: Calumz why not golden wings? and why golden wings first? after the first 5 episodes?[/quote said: because the overwhelming consensus of the fans (even the die hard fans) is that Golden wings is mediocre and doesn't add much to the literature or the background. Why golden wings first? you mean why I watched it before the other two movies? because chronologically its the first. you can watch it the way I watched it, or you can keep it simple and follow the order most fans would recommend (which is completely fine, don't fret over it too much) : My conquest is the sea of stars - > overture to a new war -> Main OVA insan3Spectre said: I feel like this is as good a time as any to throw this out there: Fuck Golden Wings. "...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth') |

Before you waste/spend your time watching this masterpiece i recommend this: Just go watch Mirai Nikki if you haven't. Did you like it?Best anime ever?Yuno best female? If yes, you will not like this anime, trust me. Don't waste your time you will thank me later. If no it kinda works like this. The more shit you think mirai nikki is, the more you will like LoTGH. It really works like this sorry. The two animes are just not compatible they are for different mindsets and personalities. You can also replace mirai nikki with other crap i just used mirai nikki because for me its the top cancer of anime. Thx. |
