That seems to be guilt coming from the chairman when he approached Kotoko about the murders. Seems he made a deal with a fox in the past and there was a lot of background story he told to Kotoko.

This was pretty much a setup episode for the remainder of the case. Kotoko is being in charge again for evalating the truth and honestly, I think she'll take care of business soon as usual.

A guilty conscience can be a powerful thing. Having someone killed, even at the betterment of others around you, is a heavy burden to bare. This old man carrying that for over two decades seeing people in his life positively effected by the murder of their matriarch his wife doesn't sit well with him. Making a deal with an ayakashi spirit isn't meant to be so smooth. All their lives being drastically improved by him orchestrated the murder of his wife. The kids got to live their own personal dreams while he got their hotel empire back under control. That guilt has been carried around by this man for so long he can't take it anymore. He doesn't want his children to think murdering someone in their way is the right option. Bringing our lady Kotoko in to have her convince the family that he had his wife murdered. Making them coming up with how he had the murder done, in logical human terms not ayakashi spirit terms since they don't know that, as means of dividing up the massive inheritance adds another wrinkle. Now the family members aren't just coming up with how he had his wife murdered for his conscience sake but for insane amounts of money. It gives them more motivation and gives Kotoko an easier way to judge their scenarios they'll come up with. Its a tall task trying to convince your family you committed a decades old murder.

Lmao casually admitting to murdering your wife is CRAZY. Definitely one of the more unique cases kotoko will have solved. Don’t think I’ve ever seen someone want to get caught with murder. But sleeping probably is difficult knowing the reality you’ve created is built on deceit.

This Otonashi familiy kept me thinking of Kyoko Otonashi and her father-in-law Mr. Otonashi from Maison Ikkoku (old anime). Mr Otonashi happened to be the owner of a boarding house ; is there any link between the "Otonashi" (literally "no sound" meaning quiet, docile) familiy name and real estate ? :D

Interesting case. And sure does sound like a pain. I wonder how it will play out.

And I really should learn to watch this anime every 2 weeks instead of seeing half of arc at a time.

This has to be the strangest case yet, and that's saying a lot given we had our share with plenty of not-so-normal cases upto this point.

A man wanting to be condemned is new but not so out of place, I mean it's better this way than guilt eating you away for the rest of your life. Curious as to how Kotoko will come up with a reasonable front on the murder case.

Also she down bad for wanting that ball pen( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yep this is definitely a more unique case in a show that's offered plenty of those so far. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's explanations.

And lol Kuro was so right, "imagine having to do an assignment for your inheritance." 💀
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

The hotel connoisseur president Goishi Otonashi of the Otonashi Group requesting the venerable Kotoko for help, starting off as a nobody to becoming the company's head, only to confess that he's the murderer of his own wife Sumi...?

The Sleeping Murder case where the true culprit was Fubuki, a yoko (fox) ayakashi that he contracted to kill his own wife 23 years ago, at a time where the company was on the verge of collapse and Sumi was overcontrolling the children in vying to continue the family business, and something had to be done quick. In exchange of getting rid of Sumi, building a residential land where the yoko will not have further conflict with rivals, it was a tit-for-tat exchange where after Sumi's taboo murder ended, it turned out for the better. But while murder is never the answer, Goishi himself battling internal diseases serves as karma for what he's done, his wish to be known as the killer of his own wife to his kids, but because of Fubuki, Kotoko is the only link that she can help him and its own brethren with.

Relying on the supernatural for things such as these, this is especially taboo to warn future generations. And none other than Kotoko knows this fact well that to rely on ayakashi, it's a dangerous proposition. So while Goishi wanted his children to know, it's only by their own observation through Kotoko's planning to deduce and inherit his fortune, the truth revealed will put a spin on the children. But Goishi trusting Kotoko this much, is there a reason behind this?

Through the children of Susumu, Rion and Koya, how would they solve the case of their own father's murder?

With how quickly they cut away from the captured fox, I'm betting the furball didn't even do it and just took credit for the kill. It'd be a very tricksy fox sort of event.

The trial setup is also sus af and almost guaranteed to have more shenanigans unfolding. The husband's business is probably failing, the granddaughter probably wants to get away from her cooking-obsessed father, and the son... well he looks like the most straightforward so he probably has the most crooked plans of all lol

No matter what actually happened or will happen though, Kotoko's going to needlessly complicate and obfuscate things as always to maintain the balance.

This new case seems a rather difficult one, the chairman killed his wife many years ago but it wasn't him but an spirit fox that did it for him, so he goes and says that to his kids but his kids don't believe him that he killed their mother, so he says to gather information by the next day or something and then tell him if he killed her.

The chairman sought help of Kotoko and she agreed to help him or some sort of way, It will be interesting to see how this case will be solved. We got a lot of story from in the past as well.

Let the case begin.

This is a rather peculiar case compared to the previous ones that a lot of us have gotten used to. Old man Otonashi wants to prove his his family that he was responsible for killing his wife 23 years ago, although it was down to a sly fox that he asked for help in doing the murdering.

Despite that, and the fact that he hasn't got left to live, he's gone out of his way to ask Kotoko for help with his plan. Kotoko herself has to think hard in how to approach this issue and I do look forward to seeing her and Otonashi's family talk this out to find the most convincing answer.

One part that I did like a lot in this episode was at the crane game, where Kotoko desperately wanted a pack of pens featuring a beauty in a swimsuit, where if you tip it upside down, it would make her naked, apart from some stars censoring the important parts. I do want to deck Kuro in the face saying that Kotoko never had sex appeal to begin with, but during their little argument, they finally got the pens that Kotoko wanted and got many kisses on the face as a reward.

Kotoko does have good taste, if you know what I mean!  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

geeez, why all the drama, when the old man can simply say that he killed his wife and jaz don't give a fuck whether his children believe him or not.

frankly, if i was her... and i got the fox in question... and it fully explained everything... and everything exactly meshed with what the old fellow said... i would deny his request until he died and refuse him a single moment of service.

this is why. the public knows nothing. his family knows nothing. his employees know nothing. the police know nothing. only the old guy and the fox and now Kotoko and Kurou know the truth. the balance between human and supernatural worlds will be restored as it pertains to this murder, with the death of the old guy due to cancer and the punishment/death of the fox. Kotoko is entirely utterly and completely useless in this situation and need never approve, disprove, or even know about this murder or how it took place or whom did or didn't do it.

the wife died and the lives of: her husband, her children, the employees of that hotel group, and the TERTIARY numbers of people involved with that hotel group were impacted in a beneficial way by that woman dying. this is a PERFECT example of the needs of the possibly MILLIONS of people being outweighed by the insane needs wants or desires of one. single. person.

seriously, this truly is an entirely non-issue case for Kotoko and she should have refused it unilaterally.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

Quite the weird case this time. Instead of finding the culprit like usual this time it's the culprit who wants to prove that he committed the murder lol.

I love it! That's a really interesting setup right now, basically a reverse case where the ones have to prove that the main guy is the culprit because he wants to but they don't believe it, I'm hooked to be honest!

So why didn't he just try talking with her? That, and how un-regretful he looks as he talks about being his wife's murderer, I seriously doubt he feels guilty.

It's Japan bro, with the toxic Kuuki wo yomu (read the air) culture especially worse among Japanese guys in which they're like Western women and expects you to be a mind reader

The world of this anime is interesting in itself. The mysteries vary in quality. But they always remind me that the truth in "human" affairs is clouded and subjective.

This one of the better episodes. A murder mystery turned inside out. The murder admits his guilt and provides evidence that he is telling the truth. Now the challenge is to get others to believe he is telling the truth.

This could be interesting. I don't know how they'll convince anybody of yokai but I welcome their attempt, and we will judge.

Seems like sneaky Gin-Fox but could be wrong.

not a big fan of this arc tbh, feels strange to randomly ask your 3 kids to write an essay about you murdering their mother lmao

Kotoko wanted a naked girl pen, that's wild :D

This president wants to teach his children a lesson. But isn't it quite late for that? Considering the eldest son already has a big daughter. Somehow, this president knows about Kotoko and connects with her through her parents. I wonder how he knew though.

Kotoko is tasked with teaching his children a lesson to not lean on the other side of nature. She has to come up with a lot of fake explanations for that.

Damn, Kotoko being interested in that hentai pen is so unexpected.

OMG! He told her in front of god and everybody, that she was not the least bit sexy. LMAO!! Seems like getting Kuro to see her as a woman is going to be more difficult than dealing with the chairman that killed his wife.

I wouldn't be surprised if the entire family was involved with the murder in some way. The way they're handling this case in such a blase manner, despite being potential suspects themselves, lends credence to that.
