At this point, it feels like Jusetsu stands out much more than any other female member cast member. I still like the style of its storytelling being told in artistic narratives though.

Feels like they're still developing Jusetsu an Koushun's relationship even if the pace is kinda slow. It was kinda interesting to see some of Kousun's past too.

At least our raven heroine is bit by bit learning how to treat people, and be more people-ish herself, if nothing. Just don't make others more upset with gifts. Also the old dude, the minister, he definitely knows more about the whole raven consort thing, than he is willing to admit.

This week's "case", brings a nice lesson for the main girls.

The mystery-of-the-week: a skylark princess treated poorly to the point of death, as Shouxue investigates with Gaojun's aide Wei Qing as an escort.

Interesting to learn that other than the Raven Consort, there's also a Crane Consort specialized in making fabrics. For the assistant Jiu-Jiu, she's jealous that Shouxue doesn't try to take her to places, but that in and of itself would create a conflict of interest. Due to Shouxue being very closed-up, Gaojun breaks down formalities between the different hierarchies, where a thing good for one can mean a bad thing for another (e.g. giving gifts to ladies-in-waiting as opposed to what Shouxue did).

This is further exasperated by the lady-in-waiting Yang Shiniang having health issues as the season changes, dressing stalks of flowers for a passing that Shouxue has an affection to help heal her and move on from the passing. It's the same for Gaojun whom depended on Ding Lan a lot that the Empress Dowager sent people to torture him to death. Time waits for no time, and is precious on every level.

What happened between Shouxue and Jiu-Jiu is just a matter of misunderstanding, and for the latter and Hongqiao, they trust her enough not to diverge secrets outside the Ye Ming Palace. Also, the Ministry of Works minister Xue Xuyong sure is shrewd on how much he knows about the Raven Consort, his mysteries to reveal will take time.

The mysteries hold up amicably, though the storytelling is at its most stable on a story formula.

Another awesome episode. Really nice to see how close Shoxue and Jiujiu are growing. Shoxue has such a kind heart but is obviously naturally inclined to close herself off due to her clan basically being hunted to extinction and her lack of social skills. I’m glad she was able to properly explain to Jiujiu and looking forward to seeing how much they develop as friends.

Shoxue and the emperor could really bond over their suffering and loss throughout life if only they were more open :/ hopefully we’ll see that at some point.

The priest that the emperor called in is definitely hiding things as well. I wonder what he really knows.

Though I know it is coming at the end of the episode, I can't help but feel and wonder at how etherially beautiful the ending song is every time I hear the first notes of it.

My only complaint with this anime is that every time the Raven consort talks with the emperor it always feels to me like her disrespect and rudeness will cost her her life at any moment. I mean the tone and words she uses are way beyond what a court lady or even a consort dared to choose talking to her emperor in a japanese or chinese court.

By all means, this show still has good aesthetics and animation, and some effective themes, but the disconnect between each episode and the amount of plot points added per episode isn't the best direction in my opinion. I would appreciate some kind of overarching plot to be revealed, hopefully soon.

It makes sense that she has problems interacting with others being cooped up in there majority of the time. JiuJiu didn't realize Shouxue's inexperience with others let alone interacting with a lady-in-waiting, so I'm glad they had a reconciliation at the end.

It is great that she is gaining more confidants but now that she has something to lose, I fear (and look forward to) what may happen next.

The Emperor is still trying to learn more about the Raven Consort but that priest pretty much talked around his questions. He's definitely a shady guy.

I'm glad to see Jusetsu and Jiu-Jiu reconcile and become a little closer after the gift drama was sorted out.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This is largely how I feel. The episodic mystery, small investigation, magical solution isn't all that engaging. Of course the point is broadening the characters and our view of the palace, but neither Jusetsu opening up nor the various court conflicts are particularly original at this stage. In the end it's fine, but I don't look forward to the episodes much.

It was a good episode, but I really think this anime could be greater than it is. Maybe the next episodes would increase more the lore, since the protagonist started seeing his mother and friend ghosts

How can one anime have the best OP and ED of the season? It's been OK so far, it kind of gives me Jouran, the princess of Blood and Snow vibes, similar aesthetic and fell under missed potential category, this anime is on the brink of that.

Really good episode! Show's really growing on me more and more as it goes.

"And so, she acquired more things she couldn't abandon." That is very sweet, but at the same time, very ominous, fuck.

Once again, ED is a banger.

Great episode! Good to see more of Emperor Koushun's past. In the first episode, we saw Jusetsu help settle the Emperor's sleep ("dispersing the miasma") so he would have a pleasant dreams. To find out that he still hasn't been sleeping well is kind of heartbreaking. You need a Jusetsu body pillow, Emperor, lol. In the next episode, I'm wondering if the Raven Consort will again be willing to disperse the miasma of his nightmares so he can sleep, or else help in setting the spirits who haunt him to rest (or both).

We had some sweet moments this episode, for those like myself following the Koushun x Jusetsu ship. Jusetsu shows the Emperor a little kindness, being the "stubbornly aloof cat" who finally shows him some affection. And the Emperor gifts her a carving of a willow tit because they remind him of her due to being "small and sweet." Also, of course, he got upset because she tried to give away the ivory hairpins he gifted to her.

The ED by Krage is still overwhelmingly beautiful, every single time I hear it.

Waiting an entire week for a new episode is getting more difficult, the more I'm sucked into this series.

Yep. It's confirmed that I kind of liked a kingdom drama. I like Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, Akatsuki no Yona, and now this. Or to be more precise, perhaps I like a mystery, supernatural, and slice of life mix such as Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi, which are the best series in my book.

The production of Raven Consort is fine. Although I'd like them to play a bit better with the "blank spaces" in regards of pacing that are necessary in slice of life esque series, but I'll gladly take whatever I have right now with Raven Consort.

Ahh... I want to read the novel so bad. This kind of series thrives for me when I read it. I could imagine immersing myself into it rather easily.

damn what was that post-credit?

it's very nice to see that emperor is talking about ding with shouxue, ding is a very special person to emperor and the fact that he's comfortable talking about him with shouxue tells us a lot. it will be a crime if the romantic relationship between those two isn't explored in this anime, even though this isn't that type of anime.

every episode ends up making us ponder over a lot. the happening are sad but they tell a lot about the people whose stories we are hearing.

5/5. excellent episode. looking forward to next one.

Every single episode I'm growing to love this show more and more, after just thinking that Shouxue's magic was pretty to really loving the leads and wanting to find more about their backstories, looking forward to the next mystery, and wondering if the Empress Dowager set anything in motion (before her death, or what those that supported her are doing now). Also, Shouxue and Gaojun's dynamic is too cute.

As usual, nice episode! I liked how the the Emperor related about his own experiences with Ding Lan with Shouxue's "fight" with Jiujiu. The fact that he also easily spoke about him to her means how comfortable he is with her. Although we don't really know how he reacts if Ding Lan's name is mentioned by others. The conflict between Shouxue and Jiujiu was simple, but well done. "And so, she acquired more things she couldn't abandon." Sounds positive, like Shouxue is growing, but at the same time a bit ominous.

The candy Gaojun gave Shouxue looks like dragon's beard candy (long xu tang; 龍鬚糖), but what I heard him say was something like si pao tang (絲泡糖), which I've never heard of, nor does the search really bring anything up, lol. Wonder where the author got that from?

The cliffhanger at the end though, scary ><

Seems like the mystery of this episode was another dark one.
The investigation into the raven consorts background also looks like it might be getting somewhere.
However, with what happened right at the end, it'll probably be a focus more on the emperor.

Decent episode, glad that the miscommunication between Shouxue and Jiujiu was resolved. I'm still getting used to the episodes having, at times, different unrelated storylines but it looks like the next episode will focus on two dead people that were close to the emperor that were previously talked about, his mother and friend/helper.

Cases where they're in an argument and the other dies before they make up are really sad, especially this way, at least it was the opportunity for MC to fix that (and fortunately nothing happened to her or the other one of course). That ending though :o

I think even though it has a main plot, it will also be an episodic anime. If that's the case then I'll like it even more :D so far every case she's solved is pretty interesting. This week's case is simpler than the previous cases, but it's not boring at all, I'm actually happy that Jusetsu is opening up more or more relaxed towards the Emperor and Jiujiu :)

And I think why this episode is calmer and simpler because next week's episode will be more tense, judging by the preview.

I didn't expect that this would be the anime I'm most looking forward to every week this season.

I actually like the episodic direction of the show. However, episodic shows depend heavily on... the episodes themselves. Do they each tell a good story individually? Do they have complex enough themes to do so? For this show, the answer seems to be leaning towards "not really". The theme for this episode isn't all that unique, with Jiujiu's reaction to the gift seeming especially inorganic.
I do think the characters are neat, though. Shouxue is quite an interesting character with enough personality to be unique, and her character probably carries the show. Her voice actor is also not bad (Fun fact: she's also voicing Ryo from Bocchi the Rock). And while Gaojun isn't particularly anything new, he is one hell of a smooth talker.

The interaction between Shouxue and the emperor are getting better but the focus this episode was her recently started bond with JiuJiu and despite the convenience that come from their disagreetment and the case Shouxue has to handle the resolution made it more satisfying, JiuJiu telling her that she and the other lady-I-forgot-her-name know about her dying her hair was such a pleasant moment.
