Gotta eat to build up that strength lol

I felt like it's an important episode after seeing some of the major drama from the background storytelling. Definitely necessary to understand some of the motives of the characters, in particular Kakeru.

Also found the episode pretty realistic.

That was some incredibly well compositioned episode... This show doesn't cease to amaze me.

A lot of emphasis on Kakeru's character this episode, and I really enjoy seeing him recognize his difficulties and getting over them (from now on) with the help of the team.

Great direction and art direction this episode, really loved the eerie, old atmosphere of Kakeru's flashback and the variety of color usage when concentrating on nature in the background.

Loved this scene.

The teammates were able to stop him on time.

Showing how his coach was very strict when main guy was in high school. He only cares about the runners' time. He punched the coach because he was too strict to the runner who got hurt.

Everyone still accepts him after telling them about the past. Even Otaku guy knows that there's a reason he caused trouble.

Main guy reconfirming that he wants to attend Ekiden with everyone.

More running, and seems like centering around Otaku guy's growth? next.

Haiji actually cares about if Kakeru has a girlfriend or not more than if he has a violence record. And Hana completely ship them. But even though I ship them too but realistically both are probably straight. Haiji might already know that Hana is fujoshi so he's just fanservicing her a bit and nothing more than that (sad)

I understand both Kakeru's actions and his teammates' anger. That coach really deserved the punch, I was very satisfied when Kakeru punched him because I also knew coaches similar to him. But unfortunately, his actions backfired on his team, and I totally understand their anger.

Nice burn from Haiji.

Kakeru has really great and understanding teammates. On the other hand, the entire time I was unable to fathom why Sakaki was acting like that, this episode finally gave us clarification.

Directing was amazing as always.

Such a beautiful and heartwarming episode! I was really shocked by the truth of Kakeru's past but i thought it was so amazing that he's friends completely accept him for who he is. I feel like this weeks episode was a massive step forward for Kakeru and it just made me love all the boys even more than i already did!

well 10 yrs ago i would ve said that this coach was a dick but right now as someone who played football at a pretty high level for 9years and got injured (yeah i cant play anymore but its nothing serious so dont worry) all i can say is that u need to say harsh words as a coach and be a dick so your students can accomplish something ( and yeah they need to be dicks too )
so what im saying is that u need to be a dick to be succesfull ;3

The way they did the flashback gave me shivers, the visuals and sound distorted the further got into it, was that supposed to visualize Kakeru's growing anger and discomfort in this establishment? If so, big claps.

The distortion vanished completely when he hit his coach, he let out all his anger inside him. Really gave me shivers a minute after i saw this.

Beautiful how his new team supports him all the way through. Yuki AS ALWAYS the first one to stop Kakeru before saying something he would regret.

Wonderful episode and the next is about Prince, i expect it to be wonderful as well.

The grainy effects from both the visual and audio departments during the flashback were excellent.

At first when the men were talking I could hear their voices were sounding slightly off and I briefly wondered if this could have been an error but nope. Amazed.

I really liked this episode. Usually I'm not a flashback scenes fan (not at all), but I have to admit the scenery was quite good for this. And the past of Kakeru has great impact on who he is now. These flashbacks were very useful (and he was so right to punch this coach omg).

The team discussion scene was also very good.
Until now I was giving this anime 7/10, if the plot and the episodes keep improving, it will be 8/10.

Awesome flashbacks, loved that it was the coach he hit and gives a solid reason for red head to have such resentment, due to the fall out.
Kakeru is a flawed character, slow to speak up and quick to anger and I love it, because he feels so real.
Looks like another Prince episode next week, which is awesome.
The opening makes me think we will get a twins episode, but I need a Musa one too, we need to at least know a bit more about him.

Honestly, before this episode I was only vaguely able to talk about what I liked about this show. It was always the same stuff I always say about sports anime ("I like the characters," "I like seeing a team of people work toward a goal together," etc). I honestly don't think I was really loving this series until today. Now I do, and I think I get why I like it so much and in a different way than I like others. Maybe it's because this is a college team and not a typical high school one, but the tone and weight of the conversations seem so different. The conflicts seem very different too, perhaps more relatable since I'm not in high school anymore? The things these characters are worried about really set it apart from the typical sports anime I'm used to. I really enjoy that.

A beautiful show. Good writing that doesn't need to rely on other unrealistic factors to make it interesting (though I do still love unrealistic sports anime, haha).

I really like how both sides of the conflict in this episode make sense. I understand why the conflict is there, the reaction doesn't seem extra or unreasonable. Kakeru understanding who he is as a person and not ignoring it. His teammates acknowledging that he made a mistake by using violence, but still accepting him. Making it clear to him that they already knew his personality and that they have fun running with him. I love that.

Also, props to the director, of course. That was gorgeous. The audio really colored the entire episode a certain way. Flashbacks done well.

Best episode so far.

Powerful heartfelt episode, that was so damn good and so damn satisfying.

Kakeru's anger was understandable and to be honest I was happy he hit the coach. He did the right thing, it might've cost the team their chance to run at the meets but would it really be worth running for that guy?

The way they presented the flashback with the muffled sound was brilliant, I originally thought something went wrong with my audio. XD

Genuinely love how the team supported Kakeru and the final scene was so good and really emotional. These guys are just a great team. :(

I thought so, too. And this series has been incredibly consistent in quality since episode 1. I honestly can't even believe that it gets better with every episode that passes. Knowing that there will be only 10 episodes left already makes me feel sad about this not being longer.
I also think this was a very realistic episode, and even though at the beginning I saw the red-haired guy as a basic shounen antagonist, this episode gave that part of the story a sense of realism that makes this feel more like a Seinen. And I can't be more happy about it.
I'm in love with this show, and the end of this episode managed to be emotional, without feeling unrealistic or melodramatic, which is something not much anime about a buch of boys can do. Run with the Wind is a very special thing.

I don't blame Kakeru for punching that coach/sensei he was total D, students should be encouraged in that state so that they may run faster in the future. That one is a true image of a really bad mentor, that Sakaki is a selfish shit as he should be thankful to Kakeru.

That circle of friendship sure was a bit emotional and was able to bring them closer than before. I'm glad Kakeru is taking the competition seriously and I hope he dates Hana when it's all over.

It took almost 13 episodes to build up Kakeru's character and all I have to say is that it totally worth it. Without a doubt, my favorite episode so far.

Kakeru's situation felt absolutely suffocating, for sure so I can understand his reaction perfectly. That coach was such a dick I can't even comprehend there are people like him in real life... that poor teammate with the scholarship surely ended up having a pretty bad injury due to that overtraining.

That aside, the backstory also gave me a new view of Sakaki. At first, I thought he was just a random old teammate who was jealous of Kakeru's skills but now that the whole story was set, I can perfectly understand his anger towards him. However, I still think he acts in a very childish way.

And finally, my favorite part, the reunion scene, which was beautifully well handled. It was so nice to see the team giving Kakeru the support he needed. Especially Yuki for being the one to support him first. Episode by episode, he slowly has become in the mom of the team xD

Overall, a pretty great episode and now that they all have bacome a true team, I'm really looking forward to seeing their participation in the Hakone Ekiden.

i totally shed a few tears. i love character growth especially from Kakeru.

i was kinda surprised Kakeru actually punched his coach but it's totally understandable. don't know why he had so much anger but i am glad he understands now that it was a bad move on his part and he could have solved it in a calmer way. maybe talking.
i also understand why his former team may hate him. to have gone through all that hard work and then not be able to even show it, that's gotta hurt especially because of someone who they think already is good enough. however, Sakaki is still an asshole who i would have liked to get punch but ya know.

seeing the team not only hold Kakeru back and stop him from punching Sakaki but also being understanding and not judging him on what he did in his past just proves how good of people all these guys are. just Prince saying that Kakeru must have had a reason to punch the coach? amazing. i love how they all understand him and are patient with him and don't let him keep on running away from his problems.

they're all just good boys.

I still don't like the pink haired guy, but I can understand his feelings now.

I thought Kakeru beat up a student. Then I thought he would end up beating the injured kid even though the coach was the one who was wrong. The truth was actually much more interesting than I could have imagined.

The story had started with Haiji trying to manipulate everyone into running. Slowly, they all ended up joining on their own. Finally, Kakeru has agreed to properly join as well. (So, does that mean he hadn't been giving his best until now?)

I feel really bad for the injured kid. I wanna know what happened to him.

I still want to know about Haiji's past. Wonder how Kakeru would react to it.

Finally we address Kakeru's past.

Although this "Bad coach" trope is overused in sports anime, however, I still really like it because of hearing the shit storm in NCAA and how the universities and coaches treat the players badly. Either way, I'm happy that everything is alright, and it's a very good episode.

you could look at it as something like an "educational" move :)

Sometimes adults too (school board and the coach) must learn not to be too self-centered and selfish and they must take others feelings and issues into consideration (like schoolkids health and mental balance).

Indeed adults should do that as well, not only kids.

In the end, it was an even result (?) : one knee against one nose.

Maybe, many many knees were saved thanks to that punch, if we suppose that adults can learn somehow. That's just a way to look at it.

Of course violence, same as verbal abuse, psychological abuse shouldn't be a mean to achieve result.

Um, wow. I didnt think it was the coach he was punching out! Even when they re showed the scene at the beginning of this episode, I had no idea that was the coach. Shit. And then immediately we get the scene of Kakeru going at red hair guy and being pulled back by his teammates, which reflects that now he has people who have his back. They're not going to let him do something stupid if they can stop him. Unlike years earlier

I'm still a little ehh at the reason for red hair guy being so pissed at him. I can only kind of understand why. You would feel angry at the guy who fucked up your sport career, but Kakeru didnt intentionally do it, so I feel like it's a bit different. The school took the coaches side and punished the team who did nothing, and instead of being pissed at that, the team and red hair guy are pissed at Kakeru. That's not entirely realistic to me, but we'll see how it turns out.

All in all, just wow. Kakeru is literally best boy

I really wished Sakaki was punched, he is so insufferable, but I'm happy that the others were there to prevent Kakeru from doing something he could regret later I guess. Now we finally know what happened, and it was worse than I thought.

That coach was the worst, he used Kakeru's achievements to climb up as a coach, while demanding unreasonable results from everyone else, looking for immediate results instead of guiding, and training his students like he was supposed to. That boy's lesion only got that bad because the coach didn't let him rest in the first place! He had no idea how much being there meant to that boy, and by what he said it was all he had, and it was gut-wrenching to watch him beg that self-centered monster to stay. What Kakeru did was wrong, violence didn't solve anything, in fact, it made things worse for him and his "teammates", but at the very least he stood up for a victim when no one else did or could.

Sakaki's hate is understandable, but it also feels unreasonable. His mindset was that no matter what kind of abuse they had to go through, they just had to "endure" it until they graduate, but that environment was abusive, and just enduring things isn't the way to go. I'm not sure what they could've done to change it, but they weren't together as a team, and by what he said of only "trying hard" when the coach is looking I can't take him seriously either. Of course the coach is to blame, but it also felt like he didn't care about the people who were truly suffering with his methods. He is still clinging to what he lost "because" of Kakeru, and that much is understandable to a degree, but he is trying to drag Kakeru down instead of overcoming the past like he is trying to do, so... Yeah, he is still an insufferable jerk.

Welp! I'm pretty convinced this is what happiness looks like:

But having your teammates/friends smiling at you while being bathed in gentle sunlight was really beautiful too.
