To commemorate the 40th anniversary of mangaka Akimi Yoshida's debut, it has been announced that her manga Banana Fish will get a TV anime broadcasting on Fuji TV's noitaminA timeslot in 2018.

Synopsis
Nature made Ash Lynx beautiful; nurture made him a cold ruthless killer. A runaway brought up as the adopted heir and sex toy of "Papa" Dino Golzine, Ash, now at the rebellious age of seventeen, forsakes the kingdom held out by the devil who raised him. But the hideous secret that drove Ash's older brother mad in Vietnam has suddenly fallen into Papa's insatiably ambitious hands—and it's exactly the wrong time for Eiji Okamura, a pure-hearted young photographer from Japan, to make Ash Lynx's acquaintance... (Source: Viz)

Staff
Director: Hiroko Utsumi (Free!)
Series Composition: Hiroshi Seko (Inuyashiki)

Ooh, MAPPA adapting more older manga series. Nice.

I haven't read this before but definitely interested to now. Summer 2018 seems likely given their current lineup.

Well at least Noitamina has a decent lineup for 2018, there doesn't seem to be any crap in it. I wonder if this will be two cours long since the manga seems to be long, we know more Kabaneri is coming, but that could be a movie or could get delayed.

Overall, good to see some older classic manga getting proper adaptations, this has a fairly solid staff.

....you people here never get tired of these kind of comments, do you? :) For every Banana Fish, you have at least 2-3 anime aimed at males, so calm down, OK? :)

HOLY MOLY WTF I NEVER THOUGHT THE DAY WOULD COME??? TIME TO SEE ASH IN ALL HIS GLORY!!

This manga can actually get pretty dark though, I'm really surprised it's going to get an adaptation!! It sounds like a BL with a dark setting, but it's story and character driven.

I'm conflicted between being estatic af and worried about it being butchered... but MAPPA does great with animation so tbh I think this will be amazing!!!!! (I doubt they'll adapt it all though...)

Nonetheless I hope this gives the manga more attention since it's really difficult to buy in English. If they republish it I can die happy... especially the side-stories you can't find online. (T▽T)

Even though I haven't been a big fan of MAPPA's work this year, I'm excited to see how this goes. Hopefully they give this the "Ushio to Tora" treatment and maintain the original style of the manga.

Same. It's one of my favorite manga and I'm afraid they will ruin it. But I'm still excited to watch it.

This totally made my day! One of my fav' manga.

I hope the manga will get more recognition on MAL now.
But the anime needs to have 26 episodes minimum, the story is too long and complex for being butchered into 12 episodes.

As for the title of Banana Fish, I believe it's a reference to the 1948 short story by Salinger.

Oh man, my hopes are really soaring for this adaptation...
The picture and PV, although bare, seems to follow the style for the manga. High hopes.... ahhh.

A dark BL shoujo? Ohh this looks really interesting. Hope it's adapted well as it's a classic in Japan.

I've also noticed that it has the Doukyuusei character designer in it, which opens up some great possibilities about how it's going to look. I am very excited!!

It's not a BL, there is no romance at all in that manga.
Although you can see subtexts here and there, since yup, it's full of guys.

I know it's not obvious BL, but it has plenty of subtext from what I've seen. I love ambiguous relationships anyway.

It's ok if you give it a pass, but just having two male protagonists or a having gay character isn't instantly going to make this "fujoshi stuff". This manga explored gritty issues faced by real people in fairly realistic ways and is actually a compelling drama.

Agree. A sausage party is a festival for some fujos. We'll probably get some art about it once it airs so nah.

So, hum... a 20ish tomes completed manga series will get one of its segments adapted into a short TV series for a non-anime addicts broadcast slot?
Half of this news seems great, half of it sounds like a pretty bad omen.

Any reader here to tell me if there is a segment or another in the whole story that could be turned into a standalone story?

@lady_freyja Thank you, I was suspecting this much. To know that even a "digest" version isn't possible to make with this short slot makes the news even more disappointing.
I was stupid to be curious after I saw the announcement happily shared by Araizumi Rui on Twitter. -_-"

Not at all.

It's the full story, or nothing (or they stop the story in middle of nowhere).
They can cut some content focused on characterization or dramatization (like the jail-passage, or some flashback) here and there in order to gain some time.
But I don't see how you can turn this series into a 12/13 episode show, it needs to be more. I think 26 is somewhat manageable, maybe. 39 would be the ideal of course, but I doubt we'll get something like that.

Or, they'll do a massive rewriting.

Eh (ending spoilers)

This said, the story is not BL and to dismiss everything that features homosexuality as "bait for fujo" is a bit sad, especially when the manga is a famous classic. The manga is probably more gritty and brutal than the average seinen manga.

I hate to break it to you but Grand Blue will most likely never get an adaptation due to the excessive and under-age drinking. So stop trashing newly announced anime, because it isn’t the adaptation you wanted.

Also Banana Fish was literally one of the mostbreaking and influential mangas at the time within it’s genre.
