 A live-action Hollywood adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.) anime film has been announced to be produced by Paramount Pictures and American production company Bad Robot on Wednesday. J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Lindsey Weber from Bad Robot will be producing the film, along with the original film's producer Genki Kawamura. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer (Arrival) will compose the script. The two companies are collaborating with Toho on the production, the company that produced the original film, who will also handle the film's distribution in Japan.Since its premiere in Japan in August 2016, Kimi no Na wa. has become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the second-highest grossing Japanese film, and the second highest-grossing anime film; with a box office revenue of more than $355 million. The film won the Best Animated Film award in the 71st Mainichi Film Awards earlier this year, and was nominated for the Animation of the Year award in the 40th Japanese Academy Prize in March. | I do think a western adaption of this movie will be better than a Japanese live action, mostly because better acting and nicer visuals. It's not being adapted from a series too so it has a lower chance of being butchered. Though I do still have low expectations for it, well I didn't think the anime was that amazing either, but I'm interested to see how this goes. |

| I'm actually surprised they managed to get JJ. Abrams for this. These anime to Hollywood adaptations typically only get no-name directors. Abrams is not that good but at least he sure knows how to do a remake (Star Wars & Star Trek) *cue the 'rehash' complains*. Plus the fact that this is a movie to movie adaptation (rather than a manga or light novel) makes it more manageable (though it also begs the question of why this is necessary in the first place). Since he's going to direct episode 9, this movie (if it indeed happens) is probably going to be released in 2021, which is for the better anyway, as that's a reasonable five year gap with the anime movie. |

Moreover, though Kimi No Na Wa. grossed well in Japan, it isn’t bound to be successful as a Hollywood remake. First they did the Netflix Death Note film, and now this? I’m going to be annoyed if they stray too much from the original plot. Weird that suddenly the American entertainment industry decides to take more interest in anime and manga. Is that good for Japan? Who knows. |

| Meanwhile I still haven't even seen the movie yet. They certainly aren't wasting any time piggybacking off of this film's popularity. Like many Hollywood live-action adaptations before it, it'll probably have some sort of casting controversy and it'll probably suck. I'm seeing people in this thread mentioning the fact that the film has Japanese cultural references......that can only mean one thing: this film is probably, like Netflix Death Note, going to be changed to an American setting to better accommodate the non-Japanese audience. So I most certainly wouldn't be surprised if, as a result, they cast white actors in the lead roles....I can already hear the cries of whitewashing.... |

| Hollywood continues to prove every year that they are creatively bankrupt. After only a year and they already trying to leech of the success of the next big anime. Cant wait for the whitewashing controversy bullshit during the casting and the amazing len flares that are going to be prevalent throughout the film. I hope this flops because lawd knows if its a success then the Ghilbi films like Spirted Away and Princess Princess Mononoke are next. | It will be a disaster. This movie is deeply related with Japanese culture, traditions and beliefs. The plot of Kimi no Na wa relies on few Japanese (some of them are Asian in general) concepts. | And the funniest thing is that Hollywood did make some good adaptations of Japanese sources (like Hachi). Sadly the anime ones always get screwed over, Wel at least this one has a competent producer. I mean why is it always done by a director who doesn't do it right? Why can't there be one done by Quentin Tarantino or Del Toro? |
