That was... lame >.>

I didn't want to believe romance like this would kick in on such a small series, but I guess there was no avoiding it.

You think so? I actually like the romance between Shiro and Aina, because it brings more depth to the characters and makes the story more interesting imo.

And it's not so surprising since it was love at first sight for the both of them.

It was obvious that's gonna happen.

It happened fast though. Since it's only 12 episode I understand they had to rush this part.

Kinda pleased that someone in a UC Gundam could actually declare his love for someone else and not die in the ensuing 10 minutes of it happening.

damn, I really had higher hopes for the love story. And for Aina. She turned into a complete ditz in this episode. It seems like they went the cliched route with this.

Cliche romance, but still the most depth displayed by any characters thus far. Shiro in particular has his freaky nightmares about bloodshed, hypocritical love, and suicidal heroism. It's like he as a character gains consistency through contradictions.

This series looks very good. Sometimes I don't know what to make of that though. At the end, a very dynamic cloud of smoke enveloped Aina as she climbed about the Zeon ship. I can't decide if it was cheesy or not.

Isn't love at first sight amazing? It allows the most awkward pacing, situations and conversations you can think of. While this episode had some interesting parts, I can't help but dismiss most of them for the cliche execution.

Funny that Shiro apparently went through such a terrible ordeal, when a colony was attacked by Zeon, and yet he seemed so happy-go-lucky when talking about defeating Zeon during the first episode.

Is the romance cliché? Yes. Is that a problem? No.

This anime isn’t about romance so I’m not concerned that the romance is cliché. The romance is used to flesh out the characters while also humanizing the other side for both the viewer and the characters. This new perspective is then used in the later episodes to drive the main theme of the anime. A non-cliché romance would add very little for the show, would risk a great deal if it didn’t work out, and consume more time that was used elsewhere.

Agreed. I just hope it doesn't end up like Kamille and Four's relationship since it feels similar to it.

Shit.

I thought this was robots in Vietnam not robots in love!

Also, how can I believe in Shiro as a leader when he's totally disingenuous to his team. I understand Amuro and Camille being like this, but Shiro is the commanding officer and it's like as soon as he found out Aina is the pilot he totally flips on the war. That attitude is not going to work if he hopes to continue to inspire his friends. Imagine if Bright Noa acted like this, we'd all be pissed.

I noticed this too (I'm sure may of you did as well), and I think it's very sloppy storytelling.

It's these nagging hypocrisies compiled with the fact that nothing bad ever seems to happen to Shiro directly that makes me really hate him so far.

There's still half a show left, and it's possible that I could be proven quick to judge, but so far Shiro = Proto-Kirito and this is bad in all the same ways that SAO is.

Before I started watching the series, I kept hearing that one of the main flaws was the romance, I always dismissed that as immature anime fans hating anything that wasn't 100% action but this was actually pretty cringe worthy.

And that Admiral appears again I did have a feeling he was gonna come back.

Yeah that also really annoyed me.

Overall not a good episode, I can't think of many parts here, well except for Aina getting naked of course.

Most forced romance I've ever watched (worse than AsunaxKirito in every possible way).

I couldn't care less if it's cliché or not, as long as it's executed well. But this, this is just a poor attempt at giving depth and pointless dilemmas to the characters. As some already said it, the writing allows for some super cringeworthy and awkward situations. Add to that the fact that Shiro comes off as a total hypocrite (esp. considering how harsh he's been with Michel last episode), which only contributes to make him even less likable and there you go: one of the worst episodes of the show so far.

I should have known better after watching MSG 0079 than to expect anything from a Gundam romance, but damn that was still hella disappointing.
I really don't know what to expect from the last five episodes, but for the moment 08th MS Team is kind of a letdown.
Hope it gets better.

I can't get a handle on Shiro's character. Like atomusku and others have pointed out, his character seems to keep changing. It's like every time something important happens his character changes to suit what is needed for that moment.

Same with Aina so far. "I'll do anything for Big Brother!" to "Big Brother is wrong and I don't want to help him anymore." Terrible.

I found the romance whatever since I saw it coming. It's total cliche crap, but it was pretty obvious. That said, I don't see how it's supposed to develop the characters since the non-romance stuff can't even do that.

Anyway my problem with it is that this was supposedly supposed to be the most realistic gundam series, which is why I watched it. I cannot deny some aspects of the show, but its moments like these which are really dissatisfying.

While I do have to admit that romances in Gundam suck most of the time (maybe ALL of the time), the romance in 08th MS actually serves to enhance the overall characterisation and experience of the characters themselves. That is likely what make this slightly better than most of the Gundam anime out there, and the romance tbh isn't all that entirely bad. Although I would like to admit that the romance was rushed, the two of them barely had any time spent together and the second time they met thet are already lovey-dovey. I guess Yatate Hajime really have to boost the romance, at least on par with Macross, all just skip out the section entirely. Onsen scene was the bomb, though.

Good episode, but yeah the romance was kinda forced.

I mean i really doubt Aina was thinking of Shiro. Though with her being used by her brother, family and pretty much just like a doll for her family, i guess in a way Shiro was her savior. Have no problem with romance in the middle of war, but at least fleshed out more.

Welp at least we know Shiro prefers Aina than Kiki.

And wtf was he standing in the middle of a gun fight?! He would have been dead if this happened in the main series.

Anyways, can't wait for the next episode!

I went into this knowing it had a rushed romantic sub-plot but that was really.. forceful. I think it could've been handled in a much better way and felt less awkward, but hey, maybe they'll get better at handling it as the story goes on.
In comparison to the last few ep's, this one didn't seem as good. It wasn't bad, but the past few just had a different, more easily enjoyable feel going for them so hopefully that'll return next ep.

This episode was what I had in mind at the end of the previous one., that may be why I am not disappointed. It was full of things I heard or read elsewhere but they made some efforts (for a little war story), the onsen scene was "logical" enough.
Thanks to the average romance we have a bit of insight on Aina's reason, but the way she turns against it comes so ridiculously fast.
The same goes for Mr. Amada. He seemed so frivolously against Zeon during his introduction and since then he discovered in himself a dark hatred for the Principality, due to an interesting flashback popping out of nowhere. Was this scene showing Shiro on the Side Zeon directed toward the Earth during Operation British? I am wondering how he escaped (the guy is a professional lucky mann?).
Seeing MS in various environments is also enjoyable for me (though I am no mecha-otaku).

Nice short piece of the Zeon escape during Odessa (so, I was wrong about the GM incoherency? ^^"). This Zeon soldier... Are they trying to make a Ramba Ral out of him?

@noGiAnime The series development was rocky: the initial director died during the production (after OAV6, I think), that's why you might find the two "parts" different. (the writer was also replaced after the 8th OAV)

@Rei366 Good to know! While I didn't hate the first half, the quality in this half is definitely improved (so far at least). I guess another part of that would have to be that they go from 6 episodes in 1996 to 2 per year for the next few years.

I had absolutely no idea about that.

Now the ridiculous gap in quality between the first and the second half of the show makes a lot more sense. May Kanda-sensei rest in peace, but Umanosuke taking over was definitely the best thing that happened to this anime.

Well the romance was indeed cliche, but not that bad. I did prefer previous episodes, though. I guess that this episode was needed, and now that it's out of the way and the romance has been established, we can continue with the rest of the developments.

Curious how they went from the jungle, to the desert, to the snow in a matter of 2 episodes or so! It's a nice changing of scenario, since most other Gundam OVAs were mainly in space and colonies.

Most people here are not into the romance in this episode, but I will have to disagree with that sentiment. To me, I felt the romance between shiro and aina as being a beautiful catalyst in shoe is development as a somewhat passive participant in the war into a mild dissident, which it are big gap to try to clear being a commander! For my eyes, the connection felt passionate and endearing, tender and comforting, everything you wont find in the trenches with the enemy and yet... I love it.

really liked the episode! it's sweet even if a little cliche. i'm new to the gundam series but i'm enjoying this anti-war premise. the characters seem a bit shallow as of now, but there's clearly a interesting backstory (as seen in the flashbacks). and even if there wasn't i'm not too caught up in it. it is still enjoyable and really pretty to watch. :-)

This episode got me smiling several times, though I'm not sure if that's because it was cringeworthy and forced or because I enjoyed it. Beautiful romance (visually), but indeed a bit rushed story-wise. I don't dislike it though. Also Shiro finally returned Aina's watch, it was bothering me throughout the whole episode (will he or won't he?), haha. Such a relief. Though I guess Aina's gonna have some problems at home, given her shady relationship with an "enemy" and destroying a prototype weapon.
Looks like Gineas was so nervous that he forgot to drink his medicine or something on time. I guess he'll die later.

Also, Shiro pretty much contradicted his ep6 self here. I guess he wasn't the right person to lecture Michel about love, huh.

Anyway, I don't get all the hate toward the show, but I'm also not as enthusiastic about it as others seem to be. It's fun though.

This isn't cliche this is cheesy. Starcrossed lovers as a trope isn't automatically bad, but the execution here was pretty laughable. Any depth that it adds to the characters is overshadowed by how abrupt it was. If they wanted to do this trope they should've devoted the entirety of 12 episodes to the relationship like Crest of the Stars and forget all about the side characters because so far none of their stories were worth telling anyway. Just have these two soldiers meet without guns and have to survive in the jungle against guerilla fighters. That's what makes the moral of "humanizing the other side and war is bad" heartfelt and not preachy.

Is this even the same show as the first half anymore? The romance feels so incredibly forced (this is literally their second meeting and they're already confessing their love) and shouldn't even be possible with Shiro's rabid hatred of the Zeon for gassing his home colony or whatever actually happened there. And Shiro's sudden turn to pacifism cos he fell in love with someone he's met twice is just insulting dumb. If this was Newtype shenanigans, I could probably tolerate it or just shrug it off, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Genuinely, why is this one of the most highly-rated entries in the entire Gundam franchise? I don't get it so far at all.
