Boring episode. Disappointed with this one. I mean what the fuck? Didn't even fit the show at all. I bet that isn't even the real lil slugger. I really hope this series improves, cause if it doesn't i'm afraid I'm gonna have to drop it. I probably won't, but still.

What a weird episode, I mean was that the imagination of the detective or that bat kid? Either way let's see what's next.

I assume the concept it's trying to explore is that children assimilate and imitate what they see, but the episode was just incongruous to the anime. I was just vexed throughout the episode.

Worst episode yet. Paranoia Agent was one of the first anime I watched and this episode is the reason why I never finished it when I first watched it a year back. It was so bad that even now it took me 2 days and 4-5 sittings to finish this episode.

This series is just brilliant! :D

My thoughts: I think people made 'shonen bat' up, but he got so popular that someone actually copycat him. lol

I really don't understand why people don't like this episode. =/

Yeah, it not like in Ergo Proxy for example, where a silly episode destroyed the integrity of the setting. In this show they didn't establish such a setting and thus doing something like this was perfectly fine. It felt refreshing.

I enjoyed travelling in shounen bat's imagination, but the thing that attracted me the most was the reactions of chief inspector...he is down to earth man but still doesn't deny this weird explanation through travelling in rpg of a young boy

Ooooh, I see. This isn't really a supernatural anime. That kid is just insane. It all makes sense now.
He wasn't too far off with Chouno, though.
I hope they catch that fat cop. What a horrible person.

What the heck? I came for some psychological stuff and I get that hahah I mean, it wasn't bad at all, it was kinda cool actually... it was just offsetting but I'm used to it since I watched Ergo Proxy and something similar happened there.

Also it feels like it's a transition to some darker atmosphere.

A funny episode although it definitely was weird and the chief detective's complaining got a bit old after a while. I loved the scene with the interminable staircase that he had to run up haha
I honestly can't think exactly why the director put this episode in. Does anyone have any ideas?

Coming back from this post, I decided to put this anime instead on hold rather than dropped. Will continue it soon, hoping for it to not come to this path again.

They almost lost me here lol

It confirmed my suspicions of Shounen Bat having a delusion of his own and a relation to the old man though so I didn't find it completely off putting. I'd say it's still within the style and theme of the show. I'll admit I didn't expect a silly RPG-ish metaphor for Shounen Bat (expected more of a classic hero of justice from manga) but the way it's used seems more fitting as he's a child and sees it as more of a fun thing to vanquish monsters under a guideline set by someone else. He's not thinking for himself? Or is that just how he sees himself. Another case of DID? Not a bad episode but still odd.

Props to less buff detective dude for being able to play along with Shounen Bat's delusion. Was a much smoother ride for him compared to buffer detective guy who had to scale all the steps of Delusion Tower pfft

And I think I'll refrain from commenting in these discussion threads until I finish this show. Too many spoilers, almost read one. Shame on you people spoiling in an episode specific discussion thread.

The first three episodes were so powerful, but this episode was a chore to watch.

Hopefully there won't be anymore of this farcical style that makes it hard for me to care about the story.

Most boring episode I've seen in ages and wtf was even going on. It threw me off a lot. For some reason it reminded me of those cringy zelda poops on YouTube, completely unbearable. I even fell asleep watching one third of this episode because of how boring it was, it killed me. Then considered dropping this but decided to pick up where I left off. Surprisingly, I made it through episode 5. I'm doubting that is the real Shonen Bat? I mean, he was caught too easily and the way he acted towards the end of episode 4 was so not him.

So many negative Nancys here. This episode was great fun; the change of pace was interesting, and I'm very intrigued to see where it goes from here. I'm also a huge Dragon Quest fan though and enjoyed the references.

I felt like I am watching Ergo Proxy again but here atleast a character is aware that everyone has gone nuts. But the 4 episodes were awesome but after seeing this episode I am beginning to understand why it isn't highly rated here. After this episode it is clear that this is fake shonen bat,the real one would not have given us this load of crap seriously.

This show just keeps going deeper and deeper.

Side note: I love how Kawazu is a frog in Shonen Bat's fantasy. My first impression when I saw him was, "He looks like a frog."

Yeah, I don't really like the way they portrayed shounen bats crimes. Too bland and generic for me and it gave me a headache because I hate watching those type of shows. I literally wanted to sleep after this episode because of how boring it was.

I did not like the shift in tone AT ALL

I mean, I guess that isn't true exactly ... I DID like that the anime was surprising me, because the last episode wasn't as good as the one before that, and the episode before that wasn't as good as the last episode, etc.

But still. I'm not sure this was the appropriate route to go? All the tension is gone. Oh well. I guess we'll see where this goes next.

The op and ed theme is annoying, characters have an ugly design and now this episode. I came here for psychological thriller but the past 2 episodes have been nothing more than boring and annoying to watch so. I'll most probably stick till the end with this one so I hope it gets better.

annnnd now i remember why i dropped this anime the first time i watched it. the first two episodes are so good, but i feel like episodes 3 and 4 just werent as good by comparison, and this episode totally threw off the tone and suspense that has been building so far. this time, im determined to keep going, but this episode was so boring and hard to sit through.

now that im more familiar with satoshi kon's works, i have faith that this episode will connect with the overall themes and ideas in an interesting way, i just wasnt a huge fan of the execution of ideas or the comedy in this episode. there are better ways that ideas can be conveyed, and a gimmicky bad comedy rpg episode just aint it. as part of the commentary on fantasy vs reality, it's a bit too on the nose for me.

i did appreciate the good cop/bad cop thing they had going on in this episode tho. seeing the good cop going the lengths that he did in order to understand the suspect's mindset was the most entertaining part of this episode.

I guess I can only say that I'm disappointed by the turn of events in this episode because it shattered the essence this anime previously had emitted. I have hope that this is only a filler episode or something of the sorts. I'll continue watching, but I'll be very disappointed if things only go downhill from here.

I personally think this episode was great and crafted well in terms of plot. This show seems to be about reality, psychology, paranoia, and hallucinations. I think the allusions to real life and the warped mind of the kid retelling the story from his perspective isn't too out of ordinary for this anime so far. Seems to me people are jumping the gun and are disappointed when more than half the anime is left and more is yet to be unraveled.

I wasn't really big on this episode either, but I think the most important take-away is that all the victims have lived in a fantasy world one way or another. Shounen Bat joins them, as he was living in an RPG-styled world. He may have been manipulated by a power we haven't seen in the show yet that altered his sense of reality.

Funny episode. It could feel a little off the wall at first, but later we see that everything it showed was going perfectly with the previous episodes and whole anime's consistency was not weakened.

By the way, I think this guy is not the real Lil' Slugger. Like, he looks like him and such, but he is not 100% conscious of his role. Something like this. The boy only joined Lil' Slugger's game of having a mental disorder (here: being too much into fictional world).

It's sad to see how many people are missing the point of this episode. The things happening in the fantasy world are simply how Lil' Slugger (or at least the person suspected to be him) interprets reality. Satoshi Kon's works all revolve around how different people experience and interpret reality, and quite frankly I think this episode is brilliant.

Forum threads like this just make me cynical.

Criticism is cheap. There are flaws in everything. No work of art will be loved by everyone. Now can everyone just chill?

Like many others have said, I didn't like this episode much. It was all over the place. While some viewed it as a "break" from the dark tone of the series, I think it changed the mood too much. It didn't take me multiple sittings to get through, but it felt like I was trudging through it rather than enjoying myself.

I do expect that the show isn't going to stick with the RPG theme and gradually get back to normal. I'm sure the episode will make sense and fit in better by the time I finish the show, but as of now it was really bad IMO.

That was very strange but interesting. So as it turns out, Shounen Bat is a very delusional person, that's all? He did target people that were suffering with something psychological, so I suppose that's where the "supernatural" tag goes in.

This episode wasn't all that great tbh. I mean it's still in line to the whole mental state theme, but it literally went nowhere apart from seeing a delusional chuunib that probably isn't even the real shounen bat. Well, we'll see where it goes

Honestly, I could have forgiven this episode and labelled it as a filler, but like, it's an original so it doesn't get a pass

This episode was goofy, it's a lovely trademark of Satoshi Kon to make a story cryptic and cerebral while not taking itself seriously at all, and this episode is a prime example of that. I appreciated that not only Ikari but even Maniwa's dialogue was written in such a way to tether the viewer to reality. Even when Maniwa is "buying into" the fantasy, it's clear that he's just using his intuition to deduce the reality, even when he's depicted wearing mystic robes lol
