Gonna be honest, I thought this is not for me initially, but I learned this is a classic from a Canadian author, and being a Canidian, I really want to learn more about it

After watching this, I really glad I did, and I can't wait to watch more episode

What a beautiful anime, simply my favorite of the season so far. Beautiful animation, stunning scenery, with a lot of imagination and purity in the way Anne acts. I love this😭❤️❤️✨

Overall it's a good adaptation so far.

My only complaint is that they are going rather quick. In one episode they covered what the first one covered in 4 and a half episodes and it feels like a little bit was sacrificed for the pacing. But at least it'll give people a reason to also check out the Isao Takahata version

I never watched the 1979 anime, which I know is considered a classic, or read the 1908 book. I started watching this cause it looked interesting, and I'm already loving it. Anime adaptations of non-Japanese media that are this old aren't that common these days.

Anne Shirley is definitely an interesting character. Didn't expect her to talk so much lol. But almost everything she says is interesting or is at least fun to hear. The VA is doing a good job. I thought Marilla would be the stereotypical evil stepmother from Disney movies, but she kinda does have a heart. That was refreshing to see. But why is she living alone with her brother tho? That's pretty sus. Tho I imagine both of them were married at some point and just lived together in a combined household which was very common when this was written. Maybe both of their spouses passed away before they could have children, and they never remarried.

I also love how this anime deals with parenting so far. Matthew is right. Anne shouldn’t be useful to them. They should be useful to Anne. Many parents think of their own children as investment or a tool instead of people and it’s depressing. It’s really interesting that a novel from over a century ago addresses this.

I love how beautiful this anime looks. I'm glad this will be a 2-cour anime. Tho since it has less than half the amount of episodes of the OG, I assume it either has faster pacing or some content from the original won't be here. Probably both. I assume the original version had a lot of anime original stories since it was very common at the time. Anyway, I'm looking forward to what happens next. If I like it enough, I'll give the OG and the prequel a shot.
@0451 The old anime is still considered the most faithful version of the book. I only remember a few scenes that don't exist in the book.

I don’t do well with remakes, I guess I get to attached to the old ones? Like the recent Urusei Yatsura and Ranma reboots weren’t bad but I had trouble connecting with them. With as much as I love the 1979 Green Gables anime I was expecting to watch an episode and drop it for similar reasons. This was so cute though! The seiyuu is such a good fit for Anne, and there’s a lot of charm to see her with such modern expressiveness. I think I’ll stick around with this one for a least a while longer. I do miss the slower pace of the original though. It took 3-4 episodes to get this point.

Did you hear me?

Nice. 2-cour anime. I haven't seen the original, but this one definitely had a good premise.

@Serafos There's even a prequel that came out a year after the novel, which came out a century after (practically on purpose?). Konnichiwa Anne, I believe? I have that and the 1979 version that this is based on backlogged. I spoiled myself on some stuff, but Anne technically speaks about at least part of the prequel anyway with the Thomas family she mentions near the end

Well it’s unfortunate that I gotta miss Witch Watch to catch this show (I only allow myself so many shows a season), but damn this first episode has sold me, The Answer Studio had me a bit cautious with their Tower of God sequel, and while that didn’t look terrible, this is completely different man, this is downright beautiful even, from the animation to the art style, and the backgrounds look amazing too, who is this studio and what did they do with The Answer lol. Of course that horse looked a bit off when put next to everything else, but I can forgive an ugly horse if the rest is this good.

So to start, I have not seen the original 1979 anime, I really wish I could say I was cultured enough to have seen it but alas I cannot lol, and that is such a long time ago too, it’s coming up on 50 years even, but I am no stranger to consuming stuff made from this time period, I am a deadhead after all lol, and I think they did a fantastic job capturing a classic style with this show, like it looks way different than anything else coming out right now, and I love that. And as for the episode itself, it wasn’t anything crazy but it really got me liking Anne and the old couple that took her in, I’m sure Anne might come off as annoying to some but personally I want a fraction of the energy she has for the world lol, but I do relate to her on that too, I love going on walks and enjoying nature, especially during this time of the year, I just may not have the same sense of wonder that she does lol.

And thank god Marilla came forward and decided to keep Anne around, I could tell the moment they walked in that room that Blewett would be a terrible person to send her to, so this little ray of red haired sunshine is going to stick around in Green Gables after all, you love to see it. Yeah I think this show was a good choice this season, I hope this adaptation can please fans of the original going forward, along with people like me who have never seen it, and if I like this enough I just might go back and watch it myself eventually.
@TheColonel76 I think the English dub and/or the Japanese version with subs are available for free on Youtube last I checked. Not sure about a legit source offhand. Also, I keep forgetting this is set in Canada in the early 20th century, so even if I was super familiar with U.s. history at the time, it probably wouldn't matter

@byebicz The original was 50 episodes, though there are sequel novels they may have adapted within that, so just the initial novel for 2 cour makes slightly more sense

This was one of my favorite books as a kid. Really looking forward to revisiting the story and characters.
@bossunhimeswitch I think my first exposure was an adaptation I still haven't seen and I forget the full background. It's a film by Kevin Sullivan from the mid 80s that eventually made its way to PBS/Wonder Works, which had many VHSs and trailers for other stuff in VHSs I watched as a kid, like their adaptation of Jacob Have I Loved, among other stuff like Chronicles of Narnia (which they stopped at Silver Chair, though I mostly remember Lion Witch and the Wardrobe and Voyage of the Dawn Treader)

A really good period piece slice of life where we follow an orphan Annie (in the literal and metaphorical sense) as she has adventures with her new family and friends. Very cute, very endearing, and the artwork reminds of the stuff that comes out of Studio Ghibli. I am looking forward to future episodes.
@chrisbolts Isao Takahata, who directed several popular Ghibli films, including an adaptation of Princess Kaguya, was involved in the original 1979 series, so that may be a major influence here even many years after his passing

</3 That scene broke my heart — with happiness <3

She’s such a wonderful girl <3

That sweetness and the way she describes the world around her is just interesting and fascinating. I loved it! I wish her so, so much happiness and love <3 she truly deserves it, everyone in the world deserves that too <3

Insufferable main character. Probably the first time I see a character that repulsive while it is obvious she hadn't been intended that way. I haven't read manga but I assume she feels much better there.
@Sinagro Hi! It's not a manga, it's a novel series from 1902 by a Canadian (it's set in Canada, eh?).
It's considered an all-time classic novel, with the following novels also beloved.
Beloved is a word associated with Anne's story. This anime skips over the hell she's been through in her 11 years, it hints at it though.
The Japanese are infatuated with Anne Of Green Gables (the novel) and I cannot blame them!

Being a big fan of the novel I can say the fast pacing hurts it a little, the novel works in an episodic format but that would mean they would have to do 38 chapters in 38 eps.

I guess since they did so much so fast they can slowdown later but we will see. I don't like that we got rid of mathew's anxiety with other people but they can so that later as well.

The 2D animation here is very good looking and instead of trying to emulate the old one they try to do vibrant colors but that horse cgi wasn't good and a big part of the episode was on it.

Ayway 10/10 it has Anne in it so it's an instant 10

A little rushed, so some scenes didn't get to sit and get absorbed. It felt a lot like how Anne talked, just jumping from one thing to another. But other than that, I liked it a lot. It was cute, the music and the art style are cozy, and they made PEI's non-coastal areas look good for once.

Here's hoping we get a new Emily of New Moon adaptation, too. I rewatched the live action adaptation and as much as I loved it, it'd be cool to see a version that doesn't give the main character a shapeshifting cousin or have the leads fight Satan.

Wow I liked this a lot more than I'd expected. Anne is sometimes a little too much, but overall she's quite endearing and fun to watch. Her curiosity and energy knows no bounds. I'd love to have a friend like her. Very heartwarming, how the old couple took a shining to her so quickly. Definitely the best first episode of the season I've seen yet. Based off the vibes alone, I have a feeling this anime is gonna be up there in my AOTS.

But, yes. It's funny seeing people talking about the OG and referring to a manga, when in actuality, it's based on a Canadian bookseries.

It's almost as if Ghibli make this, and since I mention Ghibli that means it's a highly compliment word. I'm not far of though since Isao Takahata adapt this novel 45 years ago as a part of World Masterpiece Theater (the famous one is Heidi, Girl of the Alps)
@phantomfandom The 1979 Anne is just as famous as Heidi (also done by Takahata), and it looks even prettier than this one, sinse it was actually made by (future) Studio Ghibli staff. I strongly recomend to anyone who likes Ghibli and slice of life with drama. Even if is old, it still holds up to this day and is really worth it.

Okay, I know the shows look completely different from the Emily anime, but bear with me on this one.

That X-Men anime, the Wolverine one, and that Supernatural anime. The SPN one though, I felt was the best to look at because it was less overly detailed and played with shadows better. But Emily reminds me of those shows because their colors feel super saturated, a lot of the character designs are real detailed in some places, and not in others. And the detail in some places make the rest stand out. The adults don't really have this issue, they're fine. But the kids all look weird, including the ones outside of the main cast.

Like I said, these shows are wildly different in looks, so you probably won't understand whatever the hell I'm saying. Even I think it sounds like nonsense. But it's like, just this weird, extremely specific vibe I get from all of these shows and some others.

@gabrielloki Yes, the future Studio Ghibli staff at the time worked on many, many classic pieces like this, not just Anne, Heidi or Future Boy Conan (which was extremely popular in my region as I remember) that was what led them to found Studio Ghibli in the first place.

Is it just me or do the character designs remind me of Hanabado and Vivy in a way?

Anyways, its a good first episode. No complaints here. For a studio that people claim is shit, the animation is a step above a lot of recent anime I've seen (I mean its way better than Sakamoto thats for sure).

I never grew up reading Anne of Green Gables, but I have watched Heidi before and this gives me similar vibes. I appreciate that the dialogue sounds like something out of classic literature rather than a generic modern anime.

This is the second anime of the season that blew my mind with how good it was. Considering I didn't even plan on watching either of them and had negative expectations. Shows like this is why I try to watch the first episode of basically everything in a season.

Anyway, I absolutely loved this. I have heard of the original novel, but I don't know shit about it or any of the other adaptations. The art and animation was equally fantastic, but that studio is sketchy as hell. I don't trust them to keep up the quality, but I said the same thing last season with ENGI and they dropped their magnum opus. Maybe lightning will strike twice. Either way, I am 100% in on this one. Good stuff!

I never thought I'd be watching an anime adaptation of Anne of Green Gables; I didn't even know it was based on the book at first. I watched this on a whim (channelling Anne, perhaps?), and I have to say it's one of the few animes in a while where I couldn't help smile and laugh along with Anne's infectious enthusiasm and curiosity. Anyone who's ever had a wild imagination, or maybe even a bit of one, will probably find something to enjoy. I can only hope that the rest of the season is as a joy to watch as this one.

As for the first episode rushing the first few chapters, I'm guessing they did that for the first episode to catch viewers' attentions, since there's so much competition.
