i can't help but feel the cognitive dissonance as i watch this show lol... the characters are so cute and the "plot" is so easy-going... but the backdrop of the show is so depressing omg. i actually can't decide if i want plot progression/new characters or not because i can't see a way to do it without losing its lighthearted approach...

This is cute and all, but i kinda feel... I dont know how to put it. Sad? Worried? when watching this. I mean the world is in ruins, the girls nearly freeze to death at the beginning of the episode and apparently there isn't any plant or animal life whatsoever apart form those two. I have the feeling that this show is going to get depressing soon.

I believe this is not a manga "spoiler", but simply a question of how the author wants you to approach the story: with fear? No. I think being "unspoiled" in that way that could actually detract from the experience, which was primarily designed to be relaxing iyashikei. Having a constant worry that it's suddenly going to go Made in Abyss on you would ruin that.

I've had an experience like that; I'd heard that some kind of terrible things happened to Hana in Wolf Children, so when I watched it I was constantly on edge and couldn't enjoy it. Because of that, the second viewing was far better.

The sad elements give SSR a more complex emotional blend than the more common all-sweet moeblob SoL shows (of which I'm also a fan), and I think it goes down better than the teen melodrama some shows turn to. It's a matter of taste, but to me the depressing background makes the happy things feel more special. And it rings true to life on a metaphorical level.

I'm gonna be honest here and say that I'm far, far more interested in this world that our characters inhabit rather than the characters themselves: while they aren't too bad at this point (they have a pretty decent rapport at least), I kinda view them as more of a means to an end, that end being learning more about this world and what actually happened to it.

Yeah, the latter, it's mostly about the cute iyashikei adventures. The world gets explored, not so much explained. As Nordhammer says:
Nordhammer said:
The setting is one of the vast very very ancient industrial complex-megacities.

The original civilization all but wiped themselves out, the survivors formed a new civilization which lasted for about 100yrs before they started yet another world war and so on, now the girls just wander about.

To me she's the endearing kind, but that's highly YMMV of course. :) I thought Miu (Ichigo Mashimaro) caused more trouble than she was worth, but others fully accepted her.

Yeah, but I'm not even unhappy with where it is, right now it's in the top 12 most listed shows in a busy season. Listed by more users than the new Gintama? :D Way to break stereotypes, I guess, MAL userbase...?

I can't put into words why I'm freaking out over this anime so much.

The dark and fascinating setting, yet optimistic tone. The lack of an actual plot. The natural dialogue. How more of the world is revealed through the dialogue (ie ocean creatures not really existing).

I loved the opening. Pretty lovely!

For some reason this show makes me so damn sad. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who feels this way. The setting is pretty desolate and gloomy so it makes my heart feel heavy. And it makes me wonder what happened, why are they alone, which year does this story take place and such. I hope we can have some answers later on.

The melancholic feel it seems like it might stay for the entirety of this series. They took a bath for the first time in a long time... Also the book and the fish are new experiences especially for Yuu, it was quite nice to see.

Looks like we have our dankest OP and ED of the Fall Season...

So if they found hot water, what was heating it up? Was that power plant still online?

Books are important! Praise Manga!

Were they underground or something? It looked like there was something up there when the camera showed us the whole area...

That fish must have been feasting on weed, coz these girls are dank...

Wondering if Yuuri really wanted to burn those diaries. Maybe erasing the past and forgetting is easier than recalling bad memories. First with the gun scene last episode where she threatened Chito, and now this, Yuuri's character is definitely getting fleshed out, and we're definitely seeing some differences between the two.

I love the OP and ED. Both are so cute. <3 Though, I love the OP more, it's so catchy! :) I can't wait to buy it on iTunes.

So, Yuuri and Chito are the only ones left alive, though I believe they're not alone. I bet there's a civilization somewhere.

They both found hot water, so they survived the winter, and they even made a hot bath for themselves. Haha. Cuties.

So, Chito can read and write, but not Yuuri, but STILL Yuuri can draw nice pictures. Pffffft. Hahaha. "I'M SOKKY!"

They did laundry and ate a fish. They even ate the insides? What the heck. Haha! Farewell! Bye bye, fish. Lmfao.

Such a cute and good episode. <3 This is the type of SOL I love. <3

Hate how they won't address the elephant in the room, which is how everything turned out the way it is. Or how the girls somehow managed to survive to this point while everyone else is gone. Really, not even a third person alive? I mean, I knew it from looking at the show genre tags, but still. Sort of disappointing.

Anyway, what a weird alternate universe for Miyako from Hidamari Sketch to land. She even has a different name!

This world that they are in sure is desolate though. Yuuri looks like she's having a lot of fun though. Quite a cute and catchy opening theme though. They were lucky to come across a power plant though. Quite a nice idea that they cooked up though to use the hot waster to make a bath though. So the two girls had lived with their grandpa before their journey then. Chiho realizing that Yuuri used the journal as fuel and hitting her to put it out was hillarious though. With that much water the two should be able to get more than enough drinking water and also still have enough to do the laundry as well. Knowledge in this world must have been one of the first things to be lost it seems. A relaxing episode that did well to show the challenges that the two girls face in their journey.

The OP might be my favorite of the season. I love it. I like how this show is basically a SOL show in such a bleak looking world that Chito and Yuuri live in. It was nice that they finally found some hot water to shower and get to clean their clothes in. I also thought it was very sweet that Chito keeps a journal so she never forgets the things she experiences.

Cant wait for the next episode.

The daily life of two little girls in a world destroyed by war, for now I don't know what is the objetive or the reason they try to get through this world or in this case "going up levels", maybe they simply search for happiness.

Good episode.

No,nope, does not happen this is NOT that kind of yarn.

Do not watch nor read Girls's Last Tour and expect Made in Abyss or the like.
Girls's Last Tour is a character study/slice of life of how the girls and other survivors deal with living set against the very depressing world setting.Listening to the characters is very critical, especially the girls,as the story is from their viewpoint and where ya going to get your world building.

And i'll type this again-
Two girls are touring about a very ancient,oh so vast mega-city,living their lives in their way.

They are going up because this big arse mega-city goes up and up,and there maybe fish,oh the lower levels are dark and the upper levels still have working lights...

Episode 3 will explain a good deal, get ready for more character interactions.

Opening to me feels like a lower budget Shaft anime opening... its great.

Being out in the snow sucks... a lot... but the girls manage to find hot water, SO WE GET A BATH SCENE. Speaking of water, there was a lot of it this episode.

Also, The bit with the journal and the laundry makes me curious about the world itself, like, how long has it been so empty? And just how bad was it before then for there to be practically no one left? And on top of that, the place has kind of a futuristic feel to it, but that adds to the possibilities as to what may have happened to the world to leave it in such a state.

The OP and ED are so cute! Really loving this anime. Something I realized this EP was how well the OST adds to the atmosphere. The calm piano while Chi and Yuu made their own little onsen made that scene all the more touching. It was so cute when they ate the fish ^^ and silly Yuu burning the book! You can tell Chi is sick of putting up with her antics but she wouldn't want it any other way. Looking forward to the next episode!

This show is definitely shaping up to be AOTS, the strange cold world mixed with the discovery of common human activities is really relaxing and oddly tense due to conflict like the one over rations in the first episode possibly occurring again.
