Wow I love the opening~ I'm really excited for this anime along with Psycho Pass, Shinkgeki no Bahamut and Fate/Stay Night UBW~ I can't wait to see Yona's amazing character growth! I really hope Studio Pierrot doesn't butcher it, since this is adapted off of one of my favorite manga.

Pretty generic but I need something to watch on Tuesdays. If it bores me enough I'll toss it aside like the garbage it appears right now to be.

If this anime were generic, I would love the anime medium much more. Sadly enough, we don't get a lot of these well handled historical fantasies with a serious story.
How can anyone describe this episode as boring? The characters are introduced, their relationships established and the plot progressed a lot (maybe a bit too fast, imo).

Yona is spoiled, but that doesn't make her a bad character so far. Hopefully, she'll develop.
The comedy elements are the only parts I dislike.

Also, the music is great so far. I hope it'll get more thematical in future episode. And the OP is fantastic (not the typical JPop).

Decent start but when compared to the other 2 Fantasy shows airing this season, I can't help but think how generic the package is

Eh, there are at least ten fantasy anime this season. So you should specify which ones you mean.

Qonell voiced my thoughts well. I think this did a good job introducing the characters and setting up the premise. The comedy bits weren't to my liking, but other than that there's a lot of room for potential.

My main question right now would be why Soo-Won didn't try to marry Yona. If he simply wanted kingship, that was a perfectly viable and less risky method of taking the throne. If the king had totally removed any possibility of it, that would be more understandable, but even Hak thought Soo-Won could convince the king.

I'm speculating that there's more to it than a simple lust for power, because of that.

Very nice first episode. I really like the change of pace from watching all these school animes. This episode was more of a setup for the story it seems but it really pulled me in. I'll be watching this one. Pleasant surprise for sure, glad I decided to watch

Wow, that was much better than I anticipated it would be! After Tokyo Ghoul that was super rushed, I feared for AnY, but I guess Pierrot paces their two cour anime much better as well as being more faithful to the source material (please keep it this way). From what I remember, it seems that they barely left out anything, which is great! I forgot how spoiled Yona was in the beginning, and how Soo-Won definitely doesn't make a good first impression. At least Hak (<3) comes to save the day.

The OP was great and liking the bgm so far which fits the historical fantasy setting very well. It may not be the best intro ever, and it's not like I loved the manga either from the get-go, but it does get interesting.

I was kind of expecting the betrayal from the synopsis, but I didn't expect that Soo would also attempt to have the princess executed immediately (standard practice being that he marry her to cement his claim to the throne). As people have said, there must be a reason why he didn't take the easy way to the throne.

Over all I'm happy with the way this is going for the first episode. There was a lot more blood than I expected, so that isn't going to be censored too badly and it looks like Yona will be an interesting mc to follow. At the moment she is a spoiled, scared, 16 year-old princess, but I expect her to mature and grow through the series.
Please don't feed the trolls!

10/10 Perfect Hak adaptation

Oh, the show? Fantastic start! But not as fantastic as Hak. ♥

(I love all the little Korean cultural details like the method of bowing before the royals. The music's composed by an ethnic Korean, too. So cool.)

That was beautiful. Though Yona it's kind of selfish and childish, I like her character design. Her hair is pretty as well. Soo-won it's a bastard, let's keep watching to understand his reasons.

watching this anime somehow reminds me of Seirei No Moribito. I get a feel that Hak and Yona will be cast out from their country. and will struggle to get that throne back.

it was an ok start, the comedy felt kind of half assed and some scenes felt straight out of nozaki kun but without the parody aspect, i like the main character's relationship and see a ton of room for character development and generally like the premise which this hasnt really gotten past. Its nothing to write home about yet but i see alot of potential here that i hope it follows through on

Well, so far the pace and animation looks great! I don't mind that they didn't explain about why Soo-won had killed the King, they could explain that later since this series is getting a 2-cour!! I already read the manga and it was great, so all I want from the anime is decent animation, sound and pacing. They don't even need to add stuff, just follow the manga and it should be fine....that's only if they follow the manga >.>

the studio have a long history. I see no point in talking about Tokyo Ghoul. Something that seems most interesting is that this is the same studio that made the adaptation Twelve Kingdoms(great anime, but the novels are better) and this is the same guy who make the music for the two animes.

What a great starter episode! And even though Yona seems childish now (it's undertsndable, she only just turned 16 and was a spoiled princess for all those years, please) it seems like she becomes a tough chick later on! (just by seeing that foreshadowing seen at the beginning!)

First episode felt kinda rushed... we dived right in about how Yona is all lovely-dovely with Su-on. The betrayal came really quickly.

Other than that, though, the setting is different. The architecture and clothing are all Chinese, but their names are more Korean sounding than Chinese.

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

I thought the synospis spoils a lot, given that it tells us that Soo-won kills the king, but given that it happens like this, it's kinda okay.

Given that the guards were all "in" on it, it must be something really serious, and not just regular lust for power. So maybe the king knew it, also, and just neglected to tell Yona. Would raise the question why he didn't tell her. Either he didn't believe in it (prophecy or whatever), or he did plan on telling her - after her sixteenth birthday, so too late, as usual.

About Yona: She is spoiled, but she is a princess, the only heir, and the only child. It was even mentioned in the episode that her father has given her anything that is not a weapon. But i don't think thats bad per se.

Given that her life is about to change dramatically, i except her to become less spoiled rather soon, too..

Same. We all knew the betrayal was coming, but the episode was still good. And if the opening is any indication, the MC doesn't remain the spoiled, naive girl that she is.

I see we have two spoiled, innocent, and naive Princesses this season. Maybe more from what I missing. Even so, I can tolerate her spoiledness because we were shown she was going to mature in the similar fashion to what Cross Ange showed as well.......Two spoiled Princesses both getting a rude awakening with both being innocent, naive, and betrayed............One getting the worse treatment than the other.

I don't mind that the atmosphere is both "light-hearted' and 'darkened' with limbs flying all over the place for this. Even reminds me a bit of Moribito with where this place takes place at.

The only bit that has me puzzled is how quickly Hak came to realize the Princess was in danger to saving her. Hope that is explained in the second episode. I also can't help but hear Caster Fox's (Fate/Extra) over high-pitched happy seductive voices when the Princess becomes overly excited.

Even without reading the synopsis, one could see the betrayal from a mile away haha. We'll probably have to endure a couple of episodes of Yona being naive and annoying but I'm hoping for a Juuni Kokuki-like character development (if you haven't watched it, it's awesome). I hope it'll be faster as this is only 2-cour.

Also, all you need is HAK.

So,I’ll be content if I get something of Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii‘s caliber here. I know that show had it’s problems and I didn’t consider it exactly great but for someone who rarely watches shoujo anime like me(not that I watch many shounen shows either),I still liked it quite a bit.

That being said,I liked Soredemo as much as I did because it barely used it’s shoujo tropes and treated both it’s male & female viewers equally, which is always something nice to see. Akatsuki no Yona seems like it might play up the reserves harem tropes a bit. However, a main heroine surrounded by guys does seem more reasonable when the main character is a princess since it’d be only natural that she’ll have followers/guards.

The visuals & sound are nice too so no complaints there.

I'll definitely be following this.

Despite having a (so far) fairly predictable plot and generic character relationships I actually found this series to be pretty engaging.

I usually don't expect a lot from reverse harems.....but I guess the fact that the focus doesn't seem limited to just romance makes it more appealing.

As several others here have mentioned - I also think the setting helps create interest with the story. Really curious to see what happens next!

I definitely have a feeling I'm going to be sticking with this one for the next two seasons!

Opening reminded me of Mulan. Ending was lovely.
The humor was nice as well for the premiere of this anime. The tension that was built upon the appearance of that strange man was quite intense and loved the transition back to the light and humorous scene between Soo-won and Yona.
Speaking of the climatic scenes, Soo-won murdering the king?! This is exciting! totally not what i expected
