Mobile suit Gundam/ZZ and Turn A feel. I am also reminded of Eureda Seven too.

Hope to find out who Rairya really is. It seems Kuntala has found her future husband : 0

Art is..interesting (i like some of the character designs).
Animation, particularly the constantly quick panning, is irritating.
Sound effects are really really annoying.
Music is corny as hell, feels very old school.
Cheerleaders and Bellri are annoying also.
The general feel is just way too goofy.
Aida and Monday are awesome so far.

As a long time Gundam fan, having seen pretty much everything since Wing, this was slightly grating, And I know I'm one of the few who doesn't care for Tomino's style. I'm going to watch it all the way through just because Gundam but I'm having mixed feelings. Oh well.

Side-note: Am I the only one who said "holy shit" when that guy cracked the whip near the beginning?

That felt... old. Still not sure if I'll pick this up as my first Gundam experience. Artstyle was fine with me, not really liking the mecha design though. Not a fan of the main character too, but I'll at least give it more time to convince me it's worth a watch and see where the plot is going.

I'd recommend going with 00 or Unicorn if you want something a little more modern for your first Gundam, and don't worry about needing to know about other Gundam series, most of the modern ones have little to nothing to do with the old ones.

I would watch this just for the art style and animation. The girl in the mobile suit looks absolutely gorgeous.

Still, some scenes don't flow properly and most of the dialogue was confusing.

The first episode kinda left me feeling unsatisfied.

The series just jump to a rather random mobile suit scene, with a falling girl at the end. There it continues to the story of Belri... Seriously, why are there no introductions?

They usually go with the introduction of the world first with some narration. With this just jumping right to the storyline, i didn't felt like gundam.

The designs were great, but some of the dialog and scenes doesn't really makes sense. Some scenes just felt kinda random at times.

Reco-G really has that 80's feel, and its just feels weird to me. I mean seriously, that opening sequence? Not that its bad or anything, i'm just not used to it i guess.

This episode was rather disappointing, but i'm still looking forward to the series!

I think there not taking things seriously because they have been in peace for so long so why not.. it did say Regild Century 1014 and Universal Century was a long time ago, so I guess that should explain it. 1000 years of peace, no war.. so why not..

I had a blast watching this episode. Many people have commented on the old-school directing with the classic camera angles and action choreography and that combined with the refined artstyle and character design made it absolutely riveting for me to watch. I also liked how they managed to cram in a lot of details in terms of world-building in a natural way without resorting to heaps of exposition and how some of the background art featured were modeled after the artwork from the era the title of this show is referencing.

I wonder if the pirate girl Aida's name is a hint of what's to come, after all she and her namesake from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida" are both captured by their sworn enemies, and it seems like the show is setting up a romantic subplot between Bellri and Aida similarly to Aida and Radames affair in the aforementioned opera. I mean, several characters even randomly break out into dance during the whole episode, the eye-catches and the ED.

I find it preposterous that you would suggest that Tomino, the actual creator of Gundam didn't make a Gundam-like show.

Well, you only watched Gundam 00 which is actually not by Tomino. So you have nothing to compare it to.

Reco-G really has that 80's feel, and its just feels weird to me.

Tomino directed Gundam, its sequels and a bunch of other mecha shows like L-Gaim, Xabungle, Dunbine, all in the 80s.

G-Reconguista is exactly like those shows with random dialogues and scenes because that's Tomino's style, and that's how the world came to know Gundam.

You might not like it, but G Reconguista is the most Gundam show we got for a long time. It's essentially what Gundam is all about.

Sure, people in the West came to know Gundam through Gundam Wing, but that too was actually not by Tomino.

In anticipation of this series, I just finished watching every Universal Century Gundam series:

all MS IGLOO
MS Gundam
MSG The 08th MS Team
MSG 0083
MSG Zeta
MSG ZZ
MSG Chars Counterattack
MSG UC
MSG F91
MSG Victory Gundam

so the style of Reconguista is PERFECT and fits delightfully well with all the others in this dimension of Gundam, imo.

So those of you saying "Tomino's direction is stuck in the past" or other such nonsense - are you completely unaware that this is the latest series in a VERY VERY long history of an ongoing series? Since I JUST got done watching the ENTIRETY of Universal Century I can safely say Reconguista is like the reward for having stuck with it thru all best and worst parts of the more than 200 episodes, OVAs, and movies I just watched (*cough* worst: Victory).

So, doumo arigatou gozaimasu, Tomino-san, to gokuro-sama deshita. From the bottom of my Gundam-addled heart.

I'd say Unicorn was the reward for sitting through the entirety of UC. Honestly, it's too soon to say anything about G-Reco. I expect loose references to UC, like what we got in these first 2 episodes, and nothing more.

Well there's in-universe continuity on the one-hand - which has probably settled conclusively now on Unicorn as the final note - and then there's Tomino's works in which (even in the non-Gundams) you can see a consistent method of approach, character types, and similar themes.

Continuity is nice. But how much more would you get out of watching, for example, Turn A by seeing all of UC beforehand? As for Tomino's approach, that's not as much an "award" for watching all of UC, than it is an award for being a fan of Tomino's style.

Since Turn A bellies the breadth of Gundam, (but UC in paticular), I'd say it would come with a fair amount of benefit.

It seems rather strange to be a stickler for the concept of an "award"(?) in this case, but yes, following through Tomin's Gundams to Turn A and now to Reconguista - the merit would presumably be dependant on one's liking for Tomino's style, stories, and/or issues he addresses. Is that not the same for any matter? Unicorn is a reward because you are a fan of what Unicorn does.

I don't really see your point.

The parent post said reward, award was my mistake. I took it to imply there's some exclusivity in G-Reco only to those who watched UC. My point was I don't feel what you gain from watching UC before Unicorn is comparable to what you gain from watching UC before Turn A, and theoretically G-Reco. Can you really grasp the entirety of Unicorn without knowledge of UC? It's too early to tell for G-Reco, but you can certainly take in all of Turn A just knowing UC existed prior.

It's probably the old nostalgic in me...but I enjoyed this so much. It's like Tomino ignored the last 20 years of anime and steamed on ahead doing exactly the kind of stuff that made him famous back in the day. I'm so happy that Sunrise let the old man do this.
Fast action packed start, someone already got slapped in the first episode, people talking at each other in snappy tones...It's all there (minus guy with a mask but this is only the first episode). I think I'm gonna love this. But I guess this won't be for everyone.

My favorite bit was when the Capital Force officer said "Aida Rayhunton? You just took 2 names and stuck them together!" For some reason that line coming in a series from the same guy who gave us the likes of 'Paptimus Scirocco, 'Quattro Bajeena', 'Merrybell Gadget', 'Agrippa Maintainer' or 'Mashymre Cello' just seems perfect.

Well, can't say I wasn't expecting much better. This has been said to death but it is true that it carries a strong 80s vibe. This is good because it carries with it a certain feeling that was almost lost from recent (mecha) series. On the other had it also does things that were forgivable in the 80s but aren't so today. The characters introductions were messy and the whole pace of the episode was a bit of a mess.

It tries to show too much and gives off a "little-kid-trying-to-tell-a-complex-story" feel which isn't nice. Also the mecha design could have been better but I feel it'll improve as more models get introduced. The setting is interesting and I like how things look (mecha design aside). It feels very imaginative and colorful which is good.

Well, TV Gundam series are usually slow starters so I'd say this is far from disaster and shows some potential.

Non, non - no exclusivity - I probably should have mentioned that I'm also planning on watching (or re-watching where it applies) all the anime in each "dimension's" - each Gundam World - in chronological order for that particular world, I just need to decide on the next one to watch, atm. I guess some people refer to them as Gundam Timelines. That was the main reason I was watching all of UC in order like that, but I started with UC because I knew Reconguista was coming. I know there won't be won't be much relative material - but there are tiny details that only those who HAVE seen all of Gundam will be able to spot, much less enjoy. I love that kind of stuff - I mean, you know why Gintama is so funny to so many diehard anime fans, well, it's because they get ALL the jokes that reference other anime, right?

The animation style is strongly reminiscent of Tomino's L-Gaim and Xabungle. I don't care if you don't like it, because I know Tomino is not for everyone. Some series from him are really great, like Xabungle, but sometimes it just sucks like Wings of Rean.

Tsugumi? What are you doing here?

Aaand..
..the ship raised its flag.

First episode gave me mixed feelings, but, I guess, I liked it overall.

Holy shit this is old school sound effect and direction style. Modern animation used to emulate 80s animation... Oh man this is weird in an interesting way.

Also, this is so Tomino lol.

I don't think it is, I think it really is just using hand drawn cell animation for the character and mecha animation and maybe even some of the backgrounds though there is some awkward CGI in there in episode 1. If it's not then it's extremely convincing because who goes out of their way to add those little squigglies and subtle imperfections of pencil and crayon drawn animation using a computer that's calibrated to make everything look smoother.
