That ending really bothered me, and its more messed up the more think about it. The emotional punch doesn't come from Shirase's mom, but Shirase herself. It just showed that Shirase did in fact care for her mom, which is something that has already been well established by this point. I also don't really get what Shirase was supposed to be feeling at that point. She sent the emails so she should know they were there. I can understand a more bitter feeling now that she has to admit that her mother is dead, but the anime didn't feel like it played that angle.

What gets me is that this scene feels so inappropriate. The entire catalyst for the journey has been Shirase fighting to go where her mother died, and when they finally reach the closest thing to a grave, Shirase's own pain of losing her mother pushes aside said mother. A note or message from the mother is what I was expecting and would have been much more appropriate. Watching those emails literally push aside the final words of Shirase's mother felt so wrong to me.

Well if anything I hope your worries will be alleviated when you realized there's 1 message in the outbox. Here's hoping it'll be revealed next week.

My interpretation really depends on the next episode, but the unread emails hit hard because it means her mother never opened the computer again at some point. It is the ultimate proof that her mother is dead. Even though everyone (including Shirase herself) vocalised that her mother is dead, Shirase still had a subconscious belief that her mother may still be alive somewhere. Or at least she never truly faced that reality because she never saw any concrete proof other than the logical conclusion that no human could survive an Antartica blizzard.

This reminds me of something that happened when I was at a hospital. This lady came to the ward I was admitted and seemed to be looking for someone. She asked the nurse, who couldn't provide an answer, so the lady came to ask me if I knew what happened to her father who had been in the bed opposite mine (now occupied by someone else). I told her I was only admitted today so I didn't know. She then made a phone call to someone to ask, and walked off after apparently getting an answer from the call.

The next day, she came back again and asked for her father again, then left after a while. She did that again the following day too. This time, a small group of doctors and nurses escorted her elsewhere.

Later that day, I found out that the father actually died a week ago, but she was not there when he passed on. She apparently attended the funeral too, and right after it, she started coming to the hospital every day to look for him.

Oh, man, what an amazing episode. This anime is way too good, last week I was a bit worried about what they would do having only two episodes left but my worries were swept away. Not gonna lie, that episode had everything I could hope for. And that ending... Sheesh, the ending broke me, what a strong scene. Poor Shirase.
Sometimes I think Violet Evergarden could end up being my AOTS, but nah, Sora Yori all the way.

this is easily among best episodes of an anime I've ever seen, from the very beginning it was already building up to that last scene. I thought I'd be ready for it but already halfway through the episode tears started rolling down my face and the final scene completely broke me.

I hadn't watched a (new) anime for ~2 years before last month, I'm really glad that I chose to return now and stumbled on this masterpiece.

Oh wow, very touching. After years of sending all that correspondence, perhaps in some outlandish little hope that her mom was alive and well somewhere and receiving her emails... Just to confront the cold truth that she is no longer there and truly gone.

Man. Well, Now Shirase can at least move on and accept her mother's fate, and enjoy her time with her friends and the expedition. Beautiful things all around, with the atmosphere, landscapes, music score and them feels.

On a different note, after years of taking a beating in such frigid and cold temperatures, that laptop sure is beast. They don't make them like they used to huh :V

She was willing to risk her life so she could read emails from her daughter.

Considering that outbox, it's more like that she could write to her daughter. It seems that she composed a message, probably to Shirase, right before the tragedy.

@Phaetons_Folly

If it was Shirase's story of her trying to cope with her mother's death from the very start, doesn't she deserve a full closure? I don't understand what's inappropriate about this scene at all, partially because I don't really get for which reason you were expecting a note or a message from Takako in the first place - especially considering the fact that her death was so sudden. I didn't even think that the girls would find anything physically related to her, not even talking about written or recorded message of any kind.

Now about Shirase's feelings. @SayuriUliana sums it up better than me (and also this), but I will add that Shirase didn't have to admit that her mother was dead, because she did that a long time ago. (And no, it doesn't have anything to do with that superstitious idea that she still had a belief that her mother may still be alive somewhere, or that she never truly faced the reality because she never saw a concrete proof until that moment.) There's a simple thing about human psyche inner workings: logical reasoning doesn't lead to emotional resolution, because emotions don't have to do anything with logic and rationality. Writing letters and messages to a dead person doesn't have anything to do with logic or rationality. It is a coping mechanism that Shirase spontaneously has started to use to deal with grief and anguish. After three very long years it became her habit, a daily routine. She even says that she was living in a dream-like state all those years - that's because she unwillingly delayed her emotional responce and suppressed her grief for such a long time. What broke her are not letters themselves. It was that final instant realization that was triggered by inbox counter instantly reaching that number ('instantly' is the key word here probably). (Maybe she has also realised that it actually was that particular laptop her mother was trying to retrieve, but that's just my wishful thinking.) My train of thought was going like this:

"Well, they've found... Is this Takako's laptop? Yep. The question is if it still works."
"Alright, will it start up?"
"Well, the thing is still okay, good to know. Oh, this is not going to go well, is it?"
"Oh, Shirase, you know the password. You surely do know."
(mail client starts up, inbox counter starts to go up) "The hell? These...these are the messages that Shirase... Oh, no."
(inbox counter continues to go up ever faster and Shirase begins to react) "My god...she indeed has been sending a message every single day."
(inbox counter still going up uncontrollably, Shirase is broken and devastated, and so am I) "Fuck, it's so... It hasn't been three years, it has been... How much? It's been a thousand days. A thousand days without her mother. *proceeds with incoherent mutter and crying*"

Shirase herself probably didn't even have that or any train of thought or any thoughts at all at this moment, she likely just experienced a shock, like a jolt through the whole body and a crushing flood of emotions when the brain has closed the feedback loop. It's not a conscious thing, but a gut reaction.

>Goes to Antarctica to find her mother.
>Discovers herself instead.
What she has known for years (that her mother has passed away) is finally sinking in despite the her attempts to dodge, skit, or gloss over that truth.
She's been repressing all her emotions too. When Hinata reminded her of saying "Zama mirou" she acted like she forgot. That's why I think she didn't remember sending the mails.

But why would you want to recover from that? Let the Feels flow through you... Embrace them. Accept them. For our ally are the Feels, and a powerful ally they are. Anime creates them, makes them grow. Their energy surrounds us and binds us. Feeler beings are we, not this crude matter.

So emotional episode, every cash being place on the floor, telling Shirase about what's she even doing with her life, sacrificing her youth working many part time jobs, leaving on a dream that her mother still be there on antartica.

And then every unread email is stabbing my heart, a definite proof that her mother is dead at that time but Shirase is still sending emails. This rips Shirase's heart cause its the end of her dream now.

Yep, since there's a charger, even if the battery's dead Windows will give a notification that it only needs replacing and nothing else. I don't even use my laptop's battery when you know there's no fear of having a power outage, it saves me the battery's lifespan.

This together with the last episode of Violet Evergarden are some of the most tearful episodes i seen in a very long time.

I really share the same opinion, this chapter of Shirase facing the pain of her mother's death, throwing all the sadness out of her heart... it was as painful as Anne's mother's letters were... it really was the chapters more sad, why?... because the topic they talked about was that of that special woman in the life of every boy and girl in their life, The Mother.

Something like that would not leave anyone who has loved his mother with indifferent. TO NOBODY! And Kyoani and Madhouse knew how to treat it from the respect, purity and sweetness of love...

For me it has been a beautiful season, although the next week will come the last chapter, the Slice of Life of this season have worked hard, from Mitsuboshi Colors, Yorimoi, Yuru Camp ... even Violet Evergarden, have treated beautifully the themes of the family, the love of parents, friendship and the union of people, I think the message is clear, in a time when nations and the world is divided we must remember as human beings what makes us strong as race, like Humans... the ties.

Other than that, this episode was fucking great and it almost made me cry like it didn't made me cry like how love live sunshine season 2 fucking ripped my heart in half and made me bawl like a baby but this anime almost made me. The one issue that I have is that Shirase is the only person that I have relatable feelings with and at times I felt like Tamaki is just a plain copy of chika takami(My all time favorite anime character) and tamaki didn't connect with me as much as chika does, hell the other characters didn't connect with me either but I don't want to make this reply a review so I'll just leave it here

Madhouse, it's not fair. To not have just one, not two, but THREE jaw-droppingly powerful emotional scenes within one episode.

From the time Shirase laid out the money like the playing cards earlier; to her "Dear Okaasan" monologue, and the culmination of the laptop discovery and email scene. Words don't do this episode (nor this series in general) justice.

I'm sure a lot of us feel just like Kimari when she said "Thank you for bringing me along" for this ride; but directed at the amazing staff behind this show.

I imagine that it's not that the didn't remember sending the e-mails, she just didn't need to in the first place. It's like eating bread: how many of us here can remember how many loaves of bread we've eaten through our lives? But if someone were to tally that number and show it to you, you might be shocked at the number. (iirc it was something around 7,000 on average?)

For Shirase, sending messages to her mother has become an everyday thing, so seeing the sheer volume of what she's sent to her mother... well, we all know what happened by now.

Aw, that was a bittersweet episode. WOAH! What is this..growing in my chest? Is this...

So, I did not take part in the discussion for earlier episodes because, what I could have said has been said. That said, let's do a quick run down

  • Shirase and Kimari become friends - Aww
  • Everyone laughs at Shirase for wanting to go to Antarctice - MOST UNORTHODOX!
  • Two girls bullying her into giving her the money - Bitch, you want a slap? Cause I never asked!
  • Hinata and Yuzuki joining - YAY!!
  • The gang finally going to Antarctica - SUCK IT BITCHES AND DICKS! I'M GOING TO GO die a horrible death from frostbite. But you can all die leading a useless, meaningless life and suck it regardless.
  • Singapore episode - Eh, filler but it was there. Like Durians, you don't HAVE to eat it.
  • The crew going through the rough seas - *Urp* Watching that made me physically sick.
  • Episode with the that one annoying git's love life - Remove him and you got a more than decent episode, AKA: He was USELESS!
  • Yuzuki's story arc: She is associated with the color blue, and she too had a sheltered life with little to no friends. This anime was made for me.
  • Hinata's story arc closure - Much needed and much appreciated. She was my favorite character for how energetic and positive she was. Plus, her story hit me a little hard.
  • This episode - Look above.

Yes, this episode gave me mad feels and I was awestruck at the remarkable attention to detail, especially the scene where Shirase finds her mother's laptop. Did you notice that the OS for the laptop was Windows 8, in contrast tot the modern Windows 10 considering the laptop was left there for 3 years. And the moment the her E-mails came flooding in, was jaw-dropping and melancholic for lack of a better term. These weren't just E-mails that Shirase's mom Tomari never got, it was all the mails she sent her, even after her disappearance, and how tragic that her mother never lived long enough to read them. It was sad, it was stunning, and it was beautiful in its executions.

Apparently, this is the penultimate episode so I look forward to what they have in store for us for the final episode.
ONWARDS! Away from homework and on to more anime!!!
