that was ruthless.
"Urushibara Ruka. The mannerisms and voice of a woman... No... More feminine than any woman. But he's a guy. Taller than Mayuri, but so very thin... But he's a guy. Looks great in a miko outfit... But he's a guy. It's already twilight And yet, it's so hot. The cicadas are crying. But... He's a guy."

Just because he never attempted suicide it doesn't mean he wasn't suicidal. Sometimes all it takes is a trigger, and you let yourself go. At times, what keeps suicidal people from attempting it is fear, the realization that they wouldn't have the guts to go that mile. But if suddenly you aren't alone doing so, it feels much easier. Don't talk of what you don't know.

Whatever it just didn't look natural to me...

Wow... Lot of things to say about this episode.

These people are openly talking about killing themselves right in front of him, and what does Sato do? He cheers them on (the opposite of what he's supposed to) and even lies and says he wants to die too!

Stand up for yourself man! You did just fine in the previous episode, but the minute they mention suicide it's like "Sure why not!" - In the end when the guy with the glasses says no, that's what i was waiting for Sato to say, but nope, he just stays silent the entire time. What a tool!

You could make the arguement that he's a hikkokomori and doesn't know how to handle this situation, but he's had plenty of social experience in the previous episodes! Another thing is that he asks NO questions whatsoever about these people, this island or what the hell the point of the trip is! Even with Yamazaki and Misaki, he doesn't ask questions, he just goes along with whatever they say, so i guess that's a common theme in this anime.

Plus these episodes really made me hate the Senpai character. She started out as the odd eccentric love interest, always cool and always calm. I wanted to know more about her and this conspiracy she was fighting! Now it turns out she was just suicidal all along and part of a weirdo cult that encourages it... No wonder Sato turned hikkokomori from hanging out with her. "I got a rich boyfriend, a paying job, a big house and people who care about me - I WANNA KILL MYSELF!"

Then the neglecting boyfriend shows up and is like "LETS GET MARRIED!" (what a disturbing situation to ask such a thing) and of course everything's okay, this was all just Senpai acting up because he didn't give enough her attention... What. A. Moron.
Senpai and Sato sure are perfect for eachother... Both being morons and everything! Then again Misaki isn't much better, her speech over the megaphone practically would've made any one jump!

(Did any women watch this episode and feel degraded? I'd think so. lol)

As you can tell, i pretty much hated everything about this episode. Suicide is a very delicate subject which should handled, well, delicately and I dont think they did a good job with it here. I'm not sure if the show jumped the shark with this "suicide arc", but if not it's pretty damn close. Given the anime's subject matter, I imagined an episode about suicide would pop up sometime but this happened way too sudden and it just came off as cliché and not to mention RETARDED

Yes, all this is coming from someone who's actually been suicidal and been with people who thought about it... Deepest sympathies for the other folks in the thread!<3

I completely agree with everything here, it made no sense for Satou to want to kill himself, literally hours earlier he was joking around and building campfires and shit.

Is the fact that he would willingly just go along with everything and kill himself meant to endear me to his character?

I'm on the save wavelength here.

This ep was a facepalm. Up until now I've somehow enjoyed this despite the treatment of conspiracy as a footnote with little exploration of hikkomori(ism) beyond depression/social incapacity. As mentioned by someone here, Satou wasn't even suicidal at his darkest let alone after the progress he's made with misaki. But he's somehow convinced in 5 min, when his initial intention represents the biggest swing in character development so far??? A better ending would have rendered Misaki's project a failure, with Senpai silent screaming "what have I done" as Satou throws himself over the cliff.

.... Sato
Fuck is wrong with you?

I knew he was a loser, I did, but a person has to be TRULY hopeless; truly pathetic to sit there and not speak up or take action about not wanting to commit suicide, he clearly planned to start a new better life, but even so he empties the gasoline.. so idiotic!

Wow, "Peer pressured into suicide."... never heard that one.

All of that being said this was one of my favorite episodes because it was so interesting.

Well I was a little disappointed. Not because they didn't follow through, but because it was unrealistic. This series did well to portray a person like Satou, but with this much drama with that kind of timing, and how they suddenly figured out a way to restart their lives (as if they have not talked it over before) was what had me disappointed.

Still, I don't recall hearing what the eldest man had to say about starting over, I only remember him saying he didn't want to force them to do it, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention. .

, and I don't know why people are so upset saying that the characters are dumb and thoughtless. There are a lot of people and all sorts of people out there, people just like these portrayed in the past couple episodes. You're not in their position or have their mentality.

This episode was fantastic! What really made this episode work was when everyone started reflecting on the consequences that committing suicide would bring upon the ones they love. I think anyone who's gone through a rough patch and have pondered such a drastic measure as taking one's own life would admit that it's a selfish thing to do. When they all begin to console each on the cliff it made me feel not only relieved but comforted that they realized this and began to start helping each other out by talking and taking rational courses of action. I think that's what I like most about this show: It can make me laugh at just how pathetic Satou and company can be, but also relate to them because of how real the emotions they portray and the situations they get themselves into are. Really glad I picked this show up while I'm still in college.

Woahhhh.. that was so much of drama it left me speechless.
That marriege proposal was too much.. what the heck hahahah.
The last stab to the chest.. I could really relate to how Satou-kun feel.
Somehow or rather I wished Satou succeeded in his suicide at that time.. it's for the best.
Even I would want to die at that moment.. though I probably wouldn't dare unless drugs did the trick.
What's with Misako ? I was laughing at the stuff she blurt out.. are you trying to kill him !?
The final cliche fall was awesome.. that howl of despair at the end wow.

Satou really seems to be unlucky with the girls. That senpai surely gets on my nerves, like just because your life sucks and you think your bf ignores you, you won't drag your poor old classmate to end your life with you just because you think you'd have a good afterlife with him like seriously. And then Misaki, great reasons to keep the man alive, very well -not

It made me laugh because it was so ridiculous. It just really pisses me off how people are so quick to throw away their lives over one life hurdle they've given up on trying to get over.

I guess the joke here is that in the end, the "suicidial" people wanted to live and the person who didn't want to commit suicide actually wanted to die.

the idea of black comedy is as such. Seconded only by satire, in my opinion.

This episode was extremely depressing but also funny at many times as well. I thought the part where he just went along with everyone as they poured the fuel was funny but it also showed an aspect of Sato's character and how he always wants to fit in and be part of the group and how he will go along with stuff like that because he doesn't want to be the odd one out and he doesn't want to be looked down upon. I thought the whole part with Satos' suicide was very sad and depressing. I almost cried. I like how NHK has this talent of being able to blend comedy with depressing events very well without the comedy being forced. This episode has driven me to give this series an 8 now and it is now number 10 in my top 10. I look forward to more great episodes in this series.

Great episode. Satou's inner debate of "Why can't I say I don't want to do this?" was really a high point. I second the opinion of Hitomi being a horrible person and the main culprit in Satou becoming a hikikomori. However i will say that it appears she believed Satou had read her notes and that he was in on the idea of them committing suicide. That would be one way of excusing her for not mentioning Satou as a person who cares for her. The only person who cared about her was also committed to killing himself and with him dead, she had no reason to live. But that's just conjecture on my part. She does feel as that sort of character, I mean she was saved by a proposal for god's sake, if that's not a silly deus ex machina I don't know what is.

But with regards to the main characters development and reaction - awesome episode.

o...m...g... this episode... THIS EPISODE. holy shit. This is pretty much the most powerful episode of anything I can remember watching for awhile now. The themes and commentary was incredibly intense. It's easy to make fun of the dudes for being suicidal and almost killing themselves for (mostly) silly reasons, but having dealt with a lot of suicidal people in my time, I can confirm that a lot of times it doesn't take major, catastrophic events to make a person cross the edge. Especially for someone who's already depressed, sometimes even something small can set a person off. The old man in particular really had a good reason for being so depressed he'd consider killing himself. I sure as shit felt him.

"I think this has gone on far too long. You and I both know that people like us have no right to get involved in something as dramatic as a suicide party. No matter how depressed we get, no matter how much we suffer, in the end we're just going to come back to our boring, everyday lives. And even if we don't, we'll just curl up and have a quiet, boring death that nobody will care about. Let's face it, you and I just aren't suited to have a dramatic death."

so damn powerful.

The episode built up into this pressuring drama and suddenly Satou's reactions to Hitomi, then Misaki's speech, omfg. I laughed so hard. The commentary on Misaki's character in particular was excellent. What does it mean to love someone because they're worse than you and make you feel better about yourself? It's a real problem in society.

Satou's screaming and sobbing as the episode closed was REAL AF. I felt his pain like crazy.

yeah this episode was just amazing. The combination of the black humor, drama, social commentary, and incredible development for Satou made this a classic.

LOL I thought I was weird, no way in hell would I stay quiet in such a case. Not in a million years. He was like an RPG character in Dragon Age. "Okay, so that's how I am, alright let's try that then". LMAO. Oh wait, I can imagine the ending he would get had he played Mass Effect!

What I wonder tough is what would happen if he said why he came along with his senpai - after the marriage proposal! That would be hilarious. And the reaction to his silence would be killer.

He got away with that tough. He is back with Misaki-chan again. He's a lucky bastard no matter what.

Too much dumb shit in this episode tbh. Besides the cringe-worthy Hollywood-esque ending with the megaphone on the boat, the decisions made and scenarios were completely unrealistic.

You mean to tell me that he went that entire time--got on the boat to fuck knows where--and never even asked about the trip? Then when he finally did find out, he didn't even try to stop his friend from killing herself? Then he GOES ALONG with it, just like that?

I don't care what kind of depressed state he was in, that shit was just too dumb. Too dumb for anyone. Here's what you do. After you find out you're at a suicide party, you grab your girl and get the fuck away from those people. Even if she struggles, you force her to not do it by any means possible. If all else fails then YOU get the fuck away from those people.

This guy spent the whole episode going on about living, then once the others decide they want to live he goes, "Nevermind, I actually want to kill myself now!"

It's just.. I can't suspend my disbelief THAT much.

Made a MAL for this.

Sato's character just imploded. They should have played it off like he was never going to jump but those on the boat thought he was. As a result bringing him closer to Misa. Now he is just some stupid bitch. He was never even depressed. Yama's words translate to me as "stop acting like retard and get down here".

When he found out that Senpai never really loved him and he did that facepalm moment, they could have just made a joke saying that he was dead from embarrassment or shame or some bs, but no, they had to make him go full retard.

And that kid who wanted to off himself because he stole money out of a wallet? Might have to drop this.

This episode was great until all of a sudden Satou took a complete 180 and wanted to kill himself after Jougasaki proposed to Hitomi, didn't quite understand that?

Misaki seems to have some deep psychological issues going based on what she said to Satou as he was about to jump.Guess she needs him cause of what she said a few episodes ago something among the lines of "when you're miserable look for someone worse off to feel better about yourself."

Satou shrieking at the end, powerful shit right there.

"Welcome to heaven." thought that was a nice touch at the end there.

After watching this episode i m quite disappointed in how worthless Satou is. Within the same day he decided he would start a new life and he ended up going with the flow and contemplated suicide. The most bizarre thing is how he acted when he knew what was about to go down, he just went with the flow like he just had to go somewhere he didnt want. I guess that means that he has officially let go of any control for his life?

But what is far more disturbing in my opinion is how he didnt try to persuade the others to change their mind. Wasnt his heart torn apart seeing a bunch of people, including a teenager and his high school friend give up on life? What the fuck man, after seeing her emotionally ruined why didnt he even made a discussion on this subject? How could he act during the whole time like she was some stranger while there was a possibility to change her mind? That was even more fucked up than when he told to Misaki he didnt want to see her face again just because of some vague suspicions.

This episode threw me off balance cause i thought up till now that Satou was just a hikikomori with some issues but at least he was a normal human. After this episode it seems like he is so fucked up that is in dire need of some kind of help or treatment. How did he even end up trying to kill himself, did the idea just started to grow within him and thought it was a better option than the life he lead?

On a side note, without revealing any spoilers, will Satou even make up for that? He essentially let a person he was close with for a part of his life kill herself. He must receive huge character development for the last half of the series and do something incredibly heroic otherwise i dont see how he will be anything more than a worthless moron.
