The worst first episode of any anime season I've ever watched..
To all the new viewers.. just skip episode 1. It will whisper "Drop this series, drop it now" in your ear for 24 minutes. Skip this episode. You'll only miss 3 lines of dialogue, some grunting, and some heavy breathing. Even if you start from the much better episode 2, by just reading the MAL description of this anime you will not have missed any plot what so ever.

Great atmosphere is no doubt important..but for some reason this series purposely takes it to the extreme... for whatever reason it reminds me of a middle school girl putting on makeup for the first time...
the result.. way too much makeup... translation.. way too much "atmosphere".. strike a balance unless you want to look like a clown with face paint.
Let's be honest... all you need to know to understand EVERYTHING after this episode is
prize fighter punches manager for nearly gouging his eyes out... manager is angry.. manager wants to hurt prize fighter... proceed to episode 2.
I got totally sucked into the dark and gritty world and loved the visual story telling. Sure, there are some things you don't understand yet, but I am sure it will be "explained" later.
What I like is the little exposition. It is telling the story by showing you what is going on instead of explaining it.
Wow! That art! I don't like Madhouse at all (their anime and how it looks) but here... Just wow, great work!! Backgrounds!! I prefer moe characters design, but I can't say anything bad about it. Amazing work, best looking thing which I've ever seen form Madhouse.
Story? Nothing has any sense, but it was probably done in this way specially.
- Everyone praises Texhnolyze
- Every fifth person has it in their TOP 1 spot in favorites
- Hmm, gonna watch the 1st ep
- AMAZING, best first episode I've seen in a while, so intriguing so mysterious, it went past in like 2minutes, totally got sucked into it
- Please every episode be like that :-}
- 1st ep - 10/10
I absolutely loved it. The beautiful animation and dark, creepy atmosphere totally sucked me in. Can't say I understood a lot of what was happening but that's what makes it so intriguing.
i got what was going on with the "street fighter" guy.
have no clue though on the girl and the worker.
Ok episode, can understand the complaints with the fact that not much explaining is done through speaking, but, if you read into the animation you can grasp the situation a bit better.
Beatnik said: I'm going by dodgy memory but at the time this was released I remember reading that the creator of the show said the first episode was intentonally done this way to scare off casual viewers.
That would make sense, I have no clue wtf is going on.
What I love about discussions revolving mindfuck series such as Texhnolyze is that there are those who claim to know how the series should be exclusively interpreted (that kind of my way or the highway-esque mentality) and those who wear their first impressions on their sleeves and admit defeat by saying they were confused and disliked it.
I enjoyed the first episode and I won't talk about the animation or anything like that. I liked the sequencing and imagery. If it's true that the first episode is supposed to scare off the casual viewer then I can say the same for other genres that fail to capture my interest.
So, I have a question - Am I supposed to understand this first episode? Because I sure didn't. At all. I mean, the way they did the sound effects and everything was really awesome, but I have no clue what happened.

I honestly didn't even get that. I know that he's a prize fighter from the description of the anime, but I sure as hell didn't get that that women was his manager. And the whole sex-and-then-taking-out-eyes-and-suddenly-everythings-weird scene. Also, the description said that he lost an arm and an leg for his manager? Geez, nevermind, I just didn't get jackshit. I'll still continue watching this though, since it seems quite interesting.

Oh I'm liking the ED song. Tbh when it comes to atmosphere-centric shows like these, having a good ED or OP song is really helpful. It helped me snooze through the more boring parts of Ergo Proxy and Lain.
What I got from this episode is that the woman who got punched in her face by the MC took revenge on him by having his arm cut off. Im not sure but I think they cut off his arm which he used for that punch in her face. Everything else remains mysterious though.
Without any BS narrator exposition, this ep told us a good deal number of things:
1) The setting is some sort of steam-punk, torn, 20th century looking place with factories, maybe akin to Industrial Revolution America, possibly ruled by crime.
2) The MC is a boxer. His boss seems to want him mainly for his body. MC doesn't like his boss.
3) The woman who was having sex with him (possibly his boss), is probably not human.
4 (pretty obvious)) the MC is on the run from a crime syndicate.
Not much dialogue, it was a interesting episode nonetheless, still kinda confusing and a little bit boring on the other hand. But I guess that's normal at this point, since almost nothing was explained.
The only thing I got was that the guy was prostituting himself and he hit the client when she was about the sting his eyes with her nails. As revenge she told her subordinates to slash off his arm.( those guys could also be just hired).
A big plus is definitely the heavy atmosphere which was really intriguing. This kind of show is usually not my cup of tea, but I'm gonna keep watching for the aspects I liked about this episode.

So that appeared to be two or three stories told in a very confusing show don't tell way. Best way to get my thoughts together would be to separate them into themselves so... here we go. Since I wrote an essay I'll put it in a spoiler tag.
We start out in some shady run down hotel looking place with a half naked dude walking around with bandages on his hands and blood on his face. Let's call him naked man. He looks in the mirror and reminiscence about a boxing match looking fight which we can only assume he just came from. In it he looks nuts as he beats down his opponent and we see the pleased faces of a crowd and hear noises which seem to be them cheering him on, however the noises were very distorted.
Naked man then gets in the shower to wash the blood off of himself and stares down at his knuckles as if he's still thinking of the fight. A cutie girl walks in behind him and waves his pack check around and as he goes for it she pulls it away, then whispers something we can't hear over the sound of the shower.
Then there's a scene I don't understand at all where there's some sex stuff going on between cutie girl and naked man. It juxtaposes the scene with a similar scene in a brighter room where she has doll looking hands and some old guy is watching the act go down. Oh and it also shows a creepy little porcelain doll. Que in some loud gasping breathing and cutie girl then tries to poke naked man in the eye with her nail and he shoves(or worse) her off of him. She is then heard off screen grunting in pain.
Show then cuts to naked man, no longer naked at all, walking through a town. An old hooded man walks by, then it starts to pan around the town until it hits a sewer. The show then cuts into the sewer where we can see a bunch of broken apart mechanical limbs. Naked mans sitting in this very sewer, he must of gone here from the town. Here he opens up his paycheck and looks vacantly off into the distance as well as focusing on the broken mechanical limbs.
Well he's in the sewer we are shown a man lying on a woman's lap in a bright fancy room on the phone. With this we get our first lines of dialogue. On the phone this man speaks to another by stating "It's quiet now, but I wonder how long it will last", clearly showing his knowledge in something going down.
Sometime after this call it cuts to the man on the receiving end. He's in a dark room with a bunch of men in suits and he clutches his Katana at his side.
Two men then get off of a train who later attack the people in the second story.
Cuts to a lizard, I suppose to represent the sewer, and shows naked man lying in this sewer staring into an empty vial as he holds it up for a few seconds and then drops it. Leaves to show the second story, then comes back to show naked man gasping for his breath in the sewer as he opens up a suitcase of some kind, probably to get a gun out of it to prepare for what's to come. The enemies grow nearer and naked mans gasps get worse as he clutches himself on the ground. As he lays on the ground in the dark the walls of the sewer system he's in start to get shot out by machine guns, light shooting in.
Naked man runs for his life as a bunch of men shoot at him through the sewer system. He runs into more men on the other side who shoot him in the leg and the shoulder causing him to drop his pistol(presumably what he got out of the case to prepare). He looks up to see the men on the other side of the phone call, meaning we can probably assume that he's in charge of whats happening.
The men hold up naked man and the leader of the bunch, the one on the receiving end of the call unsheathes his blade. We see the women from earlier standing in the crowd of them, who possibly sold him out. She has a mark under her eye she didn't have before, possibly what he did to her to make her grunt in agony earlier. The leader then cuts off naked man's arm and he screams out in agony ending his story for this episode as it cuts back to same lizard as before.
Now for the second story we see a man wearing a gas mask and a big suit, clearly inferring some intense level of radiation, climbing down a very manmade looking circular structure. He makes and eats a meal on the way down.
When he reaches the bottom we see a bunch of columns surrounding passages and a girl wearing a mask standing at the end of a passage. She seemingly acts as a mute guide for those who wander this far into this structure. She leads him to a location presumably then takes off her mask, and without saying a word and only using hand gestures she continues to lead him to somewhere.
The two walk over the sewer, at least we can assume from the editing of panning the sewer up to them walking, that naked man was staying in. The girl with the mask leads the wanderer to a guard with an eye patch and a gun. They exchange some lines of dialogue and it appears they are welcoming him to go further so she waves her hand some more and he follows her deeper. The wanderer says "Demon come this way, the way my hand is waving" perhaps vocalizing what she's saying with her gestures.
She leads him to an old man with long hair and the wanderer explains how he got there. The way that he got there was climbing down the hole by himself, a seemingly arduous task indeed. We get a cut, through the girl's eye no less, back to the guard outside where he is shot. The girl, who we now find out is named Ran, seems to have a premonition of the old guy being killed and starts gasping just like the cutie girl and naked man. Old man exclaims to the wanderer that he came at a bad time and tells Ran to hide.
The water ripples and old guy and the wanderer look up to see one of the guys who got off the train earlier above them holding a gun. He shouts "Soul! Body! Truth! Salvation! Vengeance!" and then shoots at them. The wanderer and the old guy lead this first opponent to a staircase and set up a place to take cover and take him out. Then from behind them the second man who got off the train surprises them and takes a shot. It cuts at this point but from Ran's premonition we can easily assume old man got shot here.
So as complex as it is I think what we can get from this episode is that there is a man made constructed city below ground and that there is heavy radiation surrounding it and most likely even more surrounding what’s outside of it. Perhaps it was made to be a safe haven after a bomb went off, who knows? The water is even red here. The wanderer traveled here through a very deep hole for a purpose and was expected or at least welcomed by Ran as a guide to lead to the guy possibly in charge.
Ran, cutie girl and naked guy are all very similar and for naked guy and Ran at the least we can say they most likely both have premonitions and lose their breath at the sense of danger. At least the sort of danger that those attackers presented were. We can also assume the two who attacked the wanderers group acted alone as they were not present in the phone call.
These people, from Ran being told to hide from the old guy and naked guy staying in the sewer, seem to be hunted for some reason by these two groups. They seem very mechanical as well, with their vacant looks and naked guys focus on the broken mechanical limbs in the sewer he was hiding in, perhaps it's a safe haven for a certain kind of people. They're also clearly supernatural in some sense with their premonitions and alerts to danger.
I think I have enough of an idea that's going on, despite a ton being wrong, that the show will at least make some sense now that I got my thoughts together.
ps I'll edit this later for any disgusting mistakes.
Alright, this is my first rewatch and I'm very excited to solve more puzzles of the storyline this time. The atmosphere was as great as the first time when I was watching this episode.
Well that was...different. It was intriguing enough to keep my interest on what will happen next and it seems the first episode was done with little dialogue intentionally so we'll see how it goes in the upcoming ones.
That was... different
I think the last anime as confusing as this one that I saw was Baccano, that later became one of my favorites, so let's hope this turns into something good as well
I don't think I understood much from what was happening.
I guess some of these allegedly humans are actually robots or cyborgs that are in dominance or something; while the MC is a real human.
It was probably a limb that was cut off him in the end; I doubt he was killed.

Anyways, I liked the first episode, but not sure I understand everything that is going on. Nice atmosphere, but not as intriguing as Lain's. Definitely solid up until now, the realistic art style is pretty good.
Using silence is an interesting, yet risky idea: it can either scare/bore the viewer away, or it can leave them glued to their seat, waiting to know what happens next.
To me, it was the second one. I really liked this episode. 10 minutes of breaths, clangs and steps, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen.
I wanted to go outside due to how surreal it was. The atmosphere really makes you think.
Behold of my awesomeness~
controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted.
But my feels.
English: The first 11 minutes had no dialog at all. Texhnolyze shows that it is a different show from the others. Very unique direction and photography methods and a lot of quality. It was a disturbing episode, I think that is a good definition for the promising beginning.

?????
Despite the lack of dialogue, the sound and cinematography in this episode were amazing and really set the tone and atmosphere this show is striving for. This episode operates more as a mood and atmosphere setter rather than a plot setter which has pulled my curiosity in even further.
