Damn Aiko's story is just one of the saddest things I've seen in nearly any medium of entertainment.

Punpun was alright in my eyes until he started hitting her and treating her like crap. Kept down her whole life right up until the end and despite being treated like shit her whole life, she still managed to end it all for someone else.

Just too damn sad.

More specifically,

Asano:

It’s too clear-cut an ending for the story. It wraps it all up a little too well. Living is harder than dying, see, so I thought this was the most painful, worst possible ending for Punpun, and that’s why in the end I went with this final chapter.

This was a pleasing ending to such a wonderful manga. It's been a while since I've read something so depressing, yet so entertaining to read.

What a depressing ride this was, i don't think i'm okay... Punpun and Aiko hands down the most painful, disturbing, destructive relationship i ever seen in any manga/anime. it broke my fucking heart.

Onodera Punpun is the most complex, realistic character i ever -and will ever- came across.

Oyasumi Punpun, a work of art!

So I finished my second reading of punpun from the start to the end , wich mean around 1 year have passed since the last time I have read this last chapter and thus completing my first read . That was something I wanted to do for a long time , since after the first time i completed it , I knew I wanted it to be with me and buy the volumes , to have them by my side , and so I waited to actually own them before reading punpun again .

So , I passed those last two days just reading it , taking my time to look at the panels , because I wasn't pushed by the absolute desire to know what would happen next since I knew it already ( on the other hand I had to take a deep breath and a little moment before reading the last 3 volumes each time ) .

My main idea behind doing this was to have a more global look at the story , to feel all the developpement , see the "hint" I would have missed , the gap between the first and final volume , all the things like that.....and you know what ?...reading the last volumes , I understanded that I had traveled for two days in oyasumi punpun , following the lives of the characters , and yet at the same time I was reading , and the character were talking of moment of there past , I was like them in the fog , like if it was from a long ago past....and this is amazing , this just show me how powerfull , how incredibly well done this storytelling is .

The re-reading may not have felt as powerfull as the first time ( and that's normal , the first time was a shock and a revelation of what manga can do) , but after finishing it again , my respect for this work is just deeper , and the idea of calling it a masterpiece feel even more natural for me now .

Once again I was amazed at the graphics and art style in general , the more the story go and the more beautifull it get , almost to the point of being exausting for the eyes , just too much to handle . I also re-discovered the developpement of the punpun/sachi relationship ( and I was amazed to see how much Asano have done with it , knowing that it only start at the very end of volume 7 !) .

As for the pegasus cult , I see some people saying that it's one of the weak point of the story , and even that it was unnecessary , when I think it is actually very powerfull and fit very well , as much as the "uncle past arc" and the seki/shimizu parts . The only problem with it is that we are so much implicated with what happen with punpun that it feel difficult to read those "sub plot insertion" before returning to the "main one" , so it feel like bad timing (reading again is a good way to see the power contained in those "sub stories" , not beeing tortured with the absolute want to know what happen next) .

oyasumi punpun deploy it story like life itself . In it you can see people trying to find there reason of living , to find the way to face life and trying to convince themself and the others with strong affirmation about it and the more "moral way" to act day by day...when in the end nobody will ever have a clear answer .

As a side though , for once I can say that I'm happy of being French : to be able to own oyasumi punpun mangas , and to could have read it in hand , it's bliss (but if it can make american people more happy , don't forgot you have Nijigahara Holograph manga available but we , french , don't ^^) .

Finally , For people that might have missed the "hidden" covers , i have some pics for you ( personally I didn't knew all of them before , some are especially interesting ) :

Oh my fucking god, if I let myself I think I could cry a little. These last chapters were horrible. Yet they were so good. Turning every page was painful, as I knew Aiko was dead, yet Punpun had to move on. But hey, that's life. Deep inside I had the small hope of a happier ending, but in the long run I'm glad Asano ended it just as he did. This ending is much more realistic and memorable. He didn't pussy out the "Clannad route", as I like to think haha.

Overall, this manga was the biggest ride of emotions I've had probably in any medium. The masterfully developed characters combined with the massive amount of chapters for such a well-written story are a combination that always works, but is not certainly easy to pull off - that is, unless you're as good as Asano. Now excuse me, as I wallow in the huge void this manga left me.

One of the greatest things I have ever experienced.
This was just something that really hit the spot, especially with my recent bouts of existentialism.
Man, this was really good.
Oh man.

BTW, yes, I saw the last chapter as a reincarnation of Punpun's and Aiko's love with some random girl and Midori's son (Taoru). The reason why I think it's Taoru is because he had the same "god" as Punpun did, and they had the same goddamn conversation and the same experiences.
It's very possible that is how Punpun looked when he was a kid-- when Taoru was born he was a little stick bird like Punpun and his family. Also, Midori said so many times that Punpun seriously resembles Yuuichi, who is the father of Taoru and gave Taoru his genes and so on.

Interesting how it's all really one big cycle. The question is posed: "What is normal?" Well, really, all events that occur in all of time happened for some reason or another and therefore are experienced by all people who have to do with those events. This "all people" expresses the normality of nearly any event, therefore we are all normal and everything we do is normal.
But honestly, who cares about being normal?

Man, I need to reread this whole thing. This was so epic.
I never even took the cult stuff seriously. I skimmed over it even though it's probably really important since it came up so often.

This story is amazing.

It's so realistic in terms of how dark humanity can really get but then again it's so mindblowing that you can't help to think I wish none of this was possible.

I thought the story would end with Punpun dying and the kid being Punpun's but actual ending doesn't bother me one bit.

Through this depressing story it can teach a couple of lessons along the way.

I think the best part about it all is now we're at the end we just get to see the process happen all over again through the children of the next generation.

Couldn't agree more with this. I finished reading this manga yesterday and Aiko's death and the circumstances that led to her suicide has still got me depressed. Her story is the saddest I've ever seen in fiction.

As bad as this may sound, I'm at least glad Punpun didn't just get over her death and got together with Sachi. A happy ending would've been good for Punpun, but as an ending for the manga, it would have been the worst.

Overall, this was and will probably be for a long time to come, one of the most intense, extremely depressing, and the most emotionally exhausting rollercoaster rides I've sat through in any medium. The only thing that I didn't like was the whole Pegasus nonsense. I just couldn't care less about it, and to make things worse, those scenes showed up at the worst moments.

I could say many things now,but I will limit myself to one: masterpiece.
Ok nevermind,I really like the idea of this ending.Punpun meeting his childhoodfriend again who has no idea what Punpun went through and just sees him happy.
This, together with EVA, is my all time favourite coming of age story,be it manga, anime, films or books, nothing touched me this deeply and I can savely say that reading Oyasumi Punpun influenced my life and changed something in me personally.I know it's a cliched thing to say,but its true.

It's one of the best works (not just manga, works) I have ever read.

And the ending it's not a happy one. Let Asano do the talking:

–The boy who moves away in his fifth year of elementary school meets Punpun again, both of them grown up now, in the last chapter.

Asano: The story’s been written through Punpun’s eyes so the readers know all about what kind of life Punpun has led, but a stranger looking at him would have no idea, right? Harumin’s a morally decent person and the most normal character in the manga, really, so I thought it’d be interesting to have him show up and contrast him with Punpun.

–The scene Harumin sees in the final chapter is one of Punpun surrounded by friends. Looking at that one scene on its own, it’d seem like a really happy one.

Asano: Exactly. But in reality, Punpun never had anything go his way in his entire life. Not once.

Punpun finally has the family he's always wanted and found happiness ;___;

A cycle back from how this all started, this end seemed like the only fitting ending for this seeing as how Punpun didn't end up killing himself like I had expected.

mAin message of this chapter, life goes on.

"Hey,did ya know?Humanity's going to go ustinct." Ohh Asano, you just had to add that to the ending :D

Literally the best coming of age story I've ever read 10/10.

Punpun was a fucking psycho, there's no need to beat around the bush here. He was mentally unstable from the beginning right until the end. I've been through some difficult times in my life and I could even relate, myself being a product of a violent and at times downright psychotic marriage but I've never done or even considered doing half the shit that's portrayed in the manga.

Which brings me to 2 very important points. First one is that Punpun really didn't love Aiko. He was just obsessed over her, thinking he could own her like a dog, albeit in a violent and rapey kind of way. I think that's what Asano was trying to portray. The last few chapters when they finally get together again are a testament to that. As soon as he started mutilating her and using her like a blow up doll I just couldn't take him seriously anymore.

And the second one is that this manga is not really about the drama and tragedy of Onodera Punpun. Ironically enough, it's about the tragedy of people who had to put up with him. The ending, as some posters have mentioned is an unhappy one. Unhappy because a woman committed suicide for a guy that one year later forgot what her real voice sounded like and also unhappy because that psycho was still at large in the end. I cringed when I saw him touching Sachi's daughter.

That's my take on the manga but it is a masterpiece regardless. My strong dislike for Punpun's character has nothing to do with the fact that Asano's storytelling is flawless and painfully depicts life as it truly is.

To be fair, they do mention that punpun looks like one of the idols from tv, or something along those lines in his middle school arc. This hints at the assumption that maybe punpun is actually a good looking kid/guy. He's just really emo and messed up because of the stuff that happened to him as he was growing up. For the most part, he was a completely normal kid before he met aiko and she threatened to kill him.

As for the job stuff, in a sense, it's not like he doesn't deserve to get at least a decent job. While it isn't blatantly shown that he's a hardworking guy, he IS a hardworking guy, lowkey. It is represented in his younger arcs where he studies nonstop for years. Also, the manager's daughter explains how hard he works and how he's even studying "how to not look like you're working hard, while you're working hard."

This took me a few days to read and while alot of people got depressed i cant quite say how i feel.. honestly its a 10/10 but the ending leaves me unsettled like aikos suicide is just.. too sad like after all she went through and PunPun... the last like 10 or so chapters i hated him and was kinda waiting for him to die the way he treated aiko was so shitty like she was messed up but i feel like he's partly to blame for her death i like his charcter as a whole but parts of him i definelty hated its gonna take some time to process but i feel like theres not much to actually think about. Its just a mind fuck of a story but really good and i loved the art it deplays all the emotions so greatly and some of the art was soo funny
This has been in my plan to read for so long and ive came across it many times im glad i finally started it

I was actually expecting a way more depressing ending, not so sure I'm glad about it though. Really wished to see Punpun's face.
The "Good Vibration" thing was super annoying and I didn't really get their purpose in the end (care to explain ^^?)
Other than that it was perfect. The art was amazing, the characters very realistic and easy to relate to. I'd give it 8.5/10 if it was possible. 9/10 because of silly site rules :P

What a wild ride. I certainly didn't find it to be a very happy ending. Punpun is still a failure and nothing went his way. He wished for death, solitude, and to be forgotten but was denied even that. Furthermore, as Asano said, his shitty life is now being immortalized in a manga. And of course there's all the shit that happened to his childhood friends. Aiko committed suicide and Shimizu is probably dead, while Seki is possibly a little delusional due to the latter event.

That being said, I still consider this a bittersweet ending. Indeed, living is tough. It's much harder than death. However, Punpun now has no choice but to FINALLY move on in his life. By continuing his life, there's the opportunity for him to finally find genuine happiness, and I'm rooting for him. There's no doubt he did some questionable things and he's certainly no saint, but at his core, he is genuinely a nice guy. Ever since the early chapters I've wished for Punpun (and co.) to one day be truly happy, and that hasn't changed.

Good night, Punpun.

I marathoned this in a few days, reading for hours at a time, and I can't get it out of my head. I also immediately read the author's interview about PunPun that's been discussed. It's gotten me feeling really bad, so bad that sleeping was difficult.

It was not at all a happy ending, at least not the kind that I was hoping for. I wanted the entire time for Aiko and PunPun to make it together and be happy, because I can relate to his idealization and obsession of his young love (which Aiko seemingly reciprocated the whole time as well).

When I think about Aiko's horrible ending to her life, from when she found PunPun again to her suicide, I can't find any positivity at all. Frankly, her whole life was horrible. They meant so much to each other for so many years and, in the end, when there is no chance that she could ever again be in PunPun's life, she is quickly forgotten. What makes it so depressing is that is, indeed, what happens after someone dies. They deserved to be happy, those two, I feel.

I've never had anyone commit suicide in my life, but I keep asking myself the same questions that I'm certain I would if it happened in real life to me: Why did she do it? What was she thinking at the moment? Which event was it that pushed her over the edge? Maybe she hoped to take the rap and free PunPun. Maybe she realized that there was no hope of them being together, so at the least she would let PunPun be free. Maybe she felt bad for essentially "trapping" him emotionally for ten years. Maybe she was afraid of jail. Maybe she realized that they had both spent ten years idealizing a prince/princess in shining armor that could rescue them, but that they were flawed, bad people (PunPun much more so than Aiko). I just don't know.

I didn't think that PunPun was "happy" at the end, and the Asano interview confirms that he wasn't intended to be.

I ask myself where and when did PunPun "break bad," as it were. When did he go from being idealistic, scrupulous and caring to the character that was so abusive to Aiko during their short time together, where he would beat a random stranger at a moments notice? Asano tries to make it obvious that it's PunPun's sexual desire that drives him throughout the entire manga. When did his obsession with Aiko, which for the majority of the manga (and maybe even all of it) was stemmed from an actual love of the ideological, innocent, beautiful Aiko get perverted into him essentially forcing himself on her callously? Maybe that was him taking his anger at her dominating his whole life out on her.

His life never seemed so bad to me. Not bad enough for him to be as dark as he was. He was studious, at times had friends, had a job, had a family, etc. He was just adrift, which is a commonplace feeling. I think that's a part of what Asano wanted to show - we humans have such a propensity for darkness and maliciousness that it can sit and seethe and fly out in any and all of us.

The most frustrating thing is that there were so many (SO MANY!!!!) opportunities for the characters to solve their problems, especially Aiko and PunPun. They just kept making bad decision after bad decision, but it would have been EASY to make the right one and fix everything. I also do wish that Asano had shown us what happened with Aiko and the two kids that PunPun left with here (ie why weren't there cops there when he got back????) but that's not too big a plot hole. It can be left up to imagination.

Anyway. This damn manga has given me so much to think about it. It's so heartwrenching. It's so sad. The characters are so flawed, but they didn't HAVE to be... That's part of the human condition.

Agh. I made this account just to post here. I can't think of ANY work of media that has impacted me so greatly in recent years. If only this manga could reach the masses. It's such an epic romance tragedy that it should just be felt and pondered on by as many people as possible.

tldr When Viz finally publishes this I'm buying 'em all, which I never do.

Definitely not a happy ending. Punpun being alive is more painful than him than dying at this point. Instead of escaping through death, he has to keep living and face his own ugliness.

Truthfully, I cannot say that I felt great while reading this manga, but the story it tells is one that I will never forget. Absolutely amazing.

It can be best manga ever. Awesome ending and powerful emotions to read. I'm speechless against this masterpiece.
I was on the verge of crying. That was so sad but it fill inside me with a happiness that so glad I read this manga. Depressing, hard but at the same time a masterpiece which wrap you its atmosphere.
Yeah, I just can write compliments for this manga, nothing else.

Lost for words on how to sum up my experience of reading this manga. Punpun went through many changes through the series, but the last few chapters were insane. Got a few laughs here and there (ussualy when Afro-God popped up lol), but for the most part this manga made me quite depressed while reading it. Punpun's life was not a easy one, he definitely was mentally unstable and never had any outside help.

I really liked this story. It took me for quite an emotional rollercoaster.
There were a lot of moments that really stuck to me.

- The 2 children (spirits?) disappearing with the 'sleeping' Aiko in an abandoned town.
- Seki coping with Shimazu's death. The scene of his shrine while talking why he couldn't be at the reunion.
- Pegasus entourage saving the world eventually and having a little game with the daruma on punpunia planet.
- Harumi's expression and outlook changes after seeing Punpun at the very end.
- Cycle continues after Punpun takes out his own eye and killing his own dark spot, with the dark spot reappearing in the newborn child of Yuuichi. The two children in Harumi's class making it look like a repeat of Punpun and Aiko's first meeting.
- Punpun wants to be forgotten and be left alone while longing to be free in the end. Instead, he's caught by Sachi and not only that, he'll be remembered forever in a manga.
