I can definitely recommend Fate/Zero. It’s intelligent, entertaining, tragic, bleak, twisted. Most of the characters are well-developed and the animation+soundtrack are gorgeous. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

One small problem is that Fate/Zero is a prequel to the other Fate visual novels and anime so it’s impossible to avoid spoilers. Watch F/Z first and you’ll get major spoilers about the backstory of Fate/Stay Night and Unlimited Blades Work; watch those first and you’ll know what happens in the end of F/Z.

Personally I’d start watching Fate/Zero first. UBW and the visual novel are pretty solid though perhaps you may not enjoy them as much as I do, but you don't need them to fully enjoy F/Z.
