Wrong. Are we even watching the same show? What is the world coming to when a fanboy is so wrapped up in trying to defend a show that they forget the details of the show itself in the process!

Long story short: This vanilla accusation will apply to many other protagonists of many other anime as well. Nothing SH would stand out with, and nothing that influences the quality of the story telling.

Except it does, because it's a stupid and lazy device; in the moment, to validate the MC ("SH is a devil, you're nothing like that"), and no doubt to set up some dumb scenario in the final episode.

inim said:
Next episode already is the final. It's a double episode so they count it as 24+25, programming schedules are not 100% clear here. But it would make sense, especially after the breather #23 was. It will end in the bang a wave is.

The waves haven't been "bangs", they've been poorly animated and directed jokes. No tension or stakes, and no lasting impact on the world or characters.

Honestly im curious do your scores reflect your enjoyment in anime? Or are you like one of those people that have a profile for objective scoring and a profile for subjective scoring, I mean absolutely no offense with the score thing, just curious.

Also I think the reason you get so many fans being a bit defensive against you is cause of how snobby you can come off sometimes presenting yourself as some expert in story telling. Not saying you have to change that for other peoples desires, just something I've noticed.

I try to rate objectively but if I'm being honest I probably swing my scores a point in either direction depending on enjoyment. i.e. an average show that I really enjoy would get a 6 instead of a 5. Not to imply that is a conscious decision, just normal bias.

I'd like to think I was less overbearing with my evaluation of this show early on, but the intense and immediate push-back from the fanboys means that I have not tried to be diplomatic since then. Plus, I think it is pretty obvious that this show has trash writing. If pointing that out makes me elitist, so much the better.

Lol pretty much. Like the waves have consisted of 4-5 episodes or so (only 2), and both felt like side events. The story was more focused on strapping chastity belts onto the self-insert beta's, to blue-ball them all the way through 20+ episodes for their sweet, sweet justice porn - for all the times that Naofumi was wronged by one-dimensional villains, and mocked for feeling unneeded and useless.

Exactly. And to anyone that wants to keep arguing otherwise, look at the actual impact of the waves. In terms of what has happened in the anime (not counting flashbacks) we've seen zero casualties, and no destruction of major population centers. Glass, who was hyped up to the point that Crunchyroll did some shill article about her, appeared for all of one episode to validate the MC and hasn't been seen since.

And look at the lack of impact on average people. It's all business as usual. There is zero effort to mobilize the military or evacuate vulnerable populations to places of refuge. This is supposed to be the apocalypse; where's my moral ambiguity? Large scale revolt or unrest, fanatic religious sects and cults, corrupt individuals hoarding resources for their own survival... no, instead members of the royal family are dicking around for no reason. And people talk like this series is complex and realistic.

It indeed seems to be the case that the high fantasy genre has no really strong entries in the anime world. At least I haven't found one yet. Shield Hero is entertaining and above average for the media format, but nobody seriously praised this PG-13 production to compete with fully adult, deep stories. It is good enough to keep birdbrained fantasy trash like myself entertained, and that is all I want from it.

For anime high fantasy, my elitist buddies recommended https://myanimelist.net/anime/153/Juuni_Kokuki and https://myanimelist.net/anime/1827/Seirei_no_Moribito. They (my elitist advisory council's with full-range, gaussian ratings) average at a 8.0/10 and 7.0 respectively, - but there are too few voices to be sure. MAL rating means nothing usually, but they too have 8+ for a 20 year old shows, which is a good sign. Anybody has watched it and can compare? Or if anybody can recommend grade 6+ anime in the high fantasy genre with as deep a world and plot as possible, I am all ear.

Cool that they added the fact that Therese was speaking another language

I really don’t like how much the anime changes naofumi’s personality, he’s like a completely different character

Overall though episode was actually a pretty good adaption, no complaints. Solid 7/10 . Even added the berries that get you drunk. Arm wrestling Raphtalia has a lot of meme potential, I’m investing. I just wish they would’ve used this same pacing/faithful adaptions for the past 4-5 episodes. A beach episode with plot advancement too? Count me in. they might just barely finish cal mira now

If you aren't reading the LN's, I really recommend it, you are missing a lot

Let me guess... Kana Hanazawa voiced the character of Therese.

They added and introduced two new characters in this episode. Naofumi and his party joined the cruise and finally got to know about L'Arc and Therese. On the other hand, other heroes had their sea sickness and they felt dizzy all throughout their way. When they arrived the Cal Mira, they decided to level up altogether. All of them had different strategies to defeat monsters. It seemed that Therese has a unique chant to cast her magic. I'm so happy to see her when Naofumi gave her the accessory he made.

We had witnessed that there's an hourglass beneath the sea. So that means a wave will also happen on that Cal Mira island. I can't wait to see what's next but it feels like the last 3 episodes starting from this episode are just fillers. They should have ended the anime last week.

I really enjoyed this episode. Great pacing and development.

Someone recommended reading the LN recently, and I agree, especially for Malty/Myne's & the king's trial.

After reading a bit of the LN, I felt the anime was a leader to sell the LN. But I have too much to read already.

Anyway, it seemn L'arc and Therese don't realize Naofumi is the Shield Hero and he did his "Hate Reaction" and his shield transformed. After rewatching, it seems they are shocked to see it and it LOOKS like Therese actually targets Naofumi with that Fire Blaze, that actually HEALS him instead of hurts him. (What's up with that?) After that fight, they are really standoffish and then decline Naofumi.
Yeah...new enemies ahead, I guess.

The guy has a pretty weird-looking shield attached to his arm, which one he has to wear 24/7 yet L'Arc doesn't believe he's the Shield Hero... and here I thought the scythe guy would be more smart. Not to mention that since the other three Heroes were in same ship as well, it was just like putting two and two together but whatever.

And on a side note, I ask myself again... what was the point of Malty's "punishment"? I mean, she can still go on adventures as part of a group and it seems she also doesn't have any restrictions regarding Naofumi and his party since she already tried to kill him in the previous episode... I don't know, the whole Malty situation is just painfully absurd at this point. Al least tell me she lost all her privileges as a member of the royalty...

"Decent" episode overall. Well, it seems this series will conclude with a final wave. Let's see how these last two eps. will handle it.

L'arc and Therese seem to notice Noafumi was the shield hero or something when they left, and they seem to hate the shield hero, this should tell use why Trash hate on Naofumi too. Also why is bitch back in the spear hero party, I know she have the slave mark for the spear hero but shouldn't she be in prison or something for a little time at least.

A tranquilizing, fun and peaceful episode. It was great to see some peace and fun for Naofumi, Raphtalia and Firo 😀.
L'arc and Therese seem good people. It was very funny to see that L'arc did not believe that Naofumi is the hero of the shield, and Naofumi accepted it without further ado and calm 😂. I wonder why L'arc and Therese think badly of the Hero of the Shield, who are they really? Personally, I think they made a good team fighting monsters.
I was very surprised to hear Naofumi think about adding L'arc and Therese to his team. He begins to regain trust in others. That worries me and at the same time it makes me happy.

What makes an hourglass of dragons under the sea? This gets interesting, again. The peace did not last long.

PS: 1.Now Naofumi can create weapons? Cool.
2. Raphtalia drunk? LOL 😂.
3. What the hell with the diving suits in the form of Christmas penguins? It's the strangest thing I've seen in this anime 😅
4.Raphtalia and Firo in swimsuits looked really cute.

"Drama is life with the dull parts cut out of it." (Alfred Hitchcock, director, 1899-1980). We hardly ever see protagonists doing their hair, taking a dump, or having diner. But biologically speaking, we are certain they do that. And yea, we can safely assume the royal family (M[e|a]lty) and the VIPs the heros are had staffers, media advisors, bodyguards, and servants today. They are all fucking millionairs and celebrities.

A lot of extremely good anime just do the consequential thing and do not show random crowds in the streets at all. E.g. the Monogatari Series has a world empty except for the protagonists, and Sarazamai shows them as gray dummies without face. Nearly all teens in teenage drama have absent parents and the disposeable funds of a working adult. SH decides to do the dummies a little more colorfully, but they are of course just part of the backdrop of the drama. Shrug.

Also, this is the medieval era without mass communication, FOX news hate preachers, and daily newspapers. There is no internet either. Communication is at rumor speed and accuracy, and the best pictures you have are hand drawn sketches, if at all.

Long story short: This vanilla accusation will apply to many other protagonists of many other anime as well. Nothing SH would stand out with, and nothing that influences the quality of the story telling.

of you I only read a lot of excuses as if all that eliminated or "forgive" the ton of bad writing that drags from the beginning, is not the same compare this with monogatari where the world does not matter because all the dialogue in the series is about a character interacts with other character, the direction of shaft focuses only those aspects, very different from the "bastard of the shield" where he loses so much time to expose the worldbuilding and multiple terms of video games and similar mechanics so that afterwards they are not worth because the protagonist will always have a trick more in the shield or just a bit of the power of love of tanuki waifu that rewrites the rules and be saved, the consequences are nonexistent nor long lasting. The waves that never had weight in the plot in spite of being the reason for which they were summoned, but all this would be forgiven of not being because it does not have a right message or correct moral in the history, it is simply to praise a type by its Victim state is exactly the same thing that would do those feminists who so much hates people for implore the sympathy of all through mercy. Fair point, the defense was too general for the particular point of criticism it dealt with. I still think that any fantasy is easy to attack by comparing it to "real world", so that is not a criterion at all. Internal consistency of the world and lack of contradictions within it counts. Insofar, you make a valid point here.
Reddmart said:

Just to be sure: SH's writing can not hold a candle to Monogatari's. I think we agree there. It's flat out on the shortlist of most well-written anime ever. The point I wanted to make is that you can reduce a fictional world to this degree, not say SH does it very well. Just as far as that the particular accusation (people on ship not recognizing celebrities) is within the limits of the Hitchcock quote, imho.
Reddmart said:

"Writing" is the hardest section to write in a review, at least that is where I had most trouble. I'm not sure if some techniques are just sloppy, or alread innovative. For sure it is not out-of-the-mill in some aspects, for the good or bad I'm not sure.

That's a strong group's opinion you rephrase here, but I still reject to apply a moral compass and deduct points for "being evil". I don't like neither Disney nor Marvel and was laughing my ass off when the GoT finale brutally punished Jon+Daenerys=royal baby hypocrites and ridiculed them on top. You do not need to be a nice guy for me, just an interesting one is good enough. If that is met is then debatable again, but the argument he is not developing for the better is not relevant for me. He was a sociopath loner in world A, and he can stay one in world B, just ok for me.

Cal Mira finally in full blown... as expected the LN has some much more detail that really made this arc so interesting in reading, this is basically a grinding arc, and me be being a grinding-whore in JRPG, I had alot of fun with this arc, better than the last one IMO.

The adaptation didnt made it justice but it was still a fun episode, I got a bit emotioned when Theresa started crying on the jewel since that does come alot later in the LN, and yeah, she can talk with Jewels, also hope people didnt miss out, but her hair turned red when she used the jewel.

L'Arc was being a bro, they really do make a good team.
Alot of stuff they just briefly showed, at least that, but I had hopes they had extented Naofumi having fun on the bar a bit more.

BTW for those that didnt noticed, they grinded ALOT here, they almost doubled their levels just with 2 days grinding, and are so high that they are now almost not getting much leveling up with the island.

So Naofumi met 2 new characters. L'Arc Berg and Therese. They seem really friendly. It's funny how they didn't want to believe that Naofumi is the real shield hero. Naofumi also got a pretty rare stone and Therese asked him if he could make her something out of it.

And Karma hits again. I had to laugh when I saw how seasick Ren, Motoyasu and Itsuki were.

On the island Naofumi, Rapthalia and Filo didn't waste any time to level up. Unfortunately the monsters were so weak that it got almost boring. Did I see it right that if the heros are together they can't get EP anymore? Seeing a drunk Rapthalia arm wrestling was also funny. Everything in this moment seemed very peaceful and everyone just had fun.

The next day Naofumi teamied up with L'Arc and Therese. The bracelet Naofumi made for Therese was super strong. So she's the person from the intro with the blue flames we see right before L'Arc. I wonder what item dropped from that boss. I have the feeling L'Arc and Therese found out that Naofumi is the real shield hero. Otherwise there would be no reason for them to refect Naofumis invitation to level the next day.

I guess a beach episode was definitely something which was missing so far. Filo looked pretty cute but damn Raphtalia looked super sexy. Besides from that under water they found an hourglass. And to make it even worse in 48 hours will be an wave on this island.

It seems 2 days left to new wave, I wonder about L'Arc and Tehere's all power.
