Best episode of the series so far!

We finally get to see some actual interaction between Kumiko and Reina (so that took 70 minutes... about.)! I think Reina's my second favourite after Hazuki - everyone thinks she's just THERE but her overeager personality reminds me of some people who are really awesome.

Not enough Asuka! D=

I wish Nakagawa was just the misunderstood genius rather than another 'lazy' second-year. Hopefully we'll see more of her in the next few episodes.

Also, how does Shuichi know everything that's happening in all the other sections??? My ideas are: 1) clones, 2) male Homura in KyoAni!verse, 3) stalker - with serious yandere tendencies.

Can't wait until next week! ... gah, Tuesday so far off!!!

Random afterthought: has the number of episodes been confirmed yet? Celebrating 2-cour maybe? Tentatively?

Great episode, they managed to do slice-of-life and pacing well things time. And they even went into detail and used authentic technical terms in dialogues.

One quirks though - too many two frame loop animations when somebody was speaking. I know this is KyoAni trademark, sort of, but it was kinda overused this time. On the other hand - Kumiko's face animations were brilliant this time.

Also, I realized it just now, but has anyone noticed that they are using close to real proportions for bodies of all girls? Kinda refreshing to see some club members that are far from skinny.

I can't believe how much fun I'm having with this show! Easily one of KyoAni's best pickups as of late. I think my own experience in high school band is making this more personal.

I'm wondering...

Some of you insist Kyoani is doing the same over and over. I don't think so and that's is no problem with me. But if it were true and you wanted something else, then how come you are watching the old things to you and keep posting the old comments again and again?

Disputes within the club. Taki-sensei's decision can't be accepted by all.

On the pretext of want to see progress every protege, Taki-sensei gave workout with a hidden purpose. The exercise is fruitless. The club was finally allowed to attend SunFest. Nice teaching method.

Kumiko was successfully expressed aim at Kousaka. Btw comedy face of Kumiko gave fresh air in this anime.

This is the beginning of the episode that awaited. Eventually all the instruments play ensemble together. Amazing musical brings its own nuances are different from K- ON, Love Live, or Nodame Cantabile.

When the club play music together, seen people around immensely. Especially when scene a boy posing as soldiers outside haha very lol.

With a concept that's not mainstream, it looks like this will be another one KyoAni work that will take to rise to the top.

Can't wait to watch the next episode.

Starting to seriously think that all of the girls other than Kousaka are idiots.

Seriously, do they think that they're going to get ANYWHERE if they don't take it seriously?

If they can't even play in time with each other...geezus Christ.

At first I had seriously thought that the MC, after her comment of "They're terrible!" was going to step up and, along with Kousaka, push the band forward given that she was from a school where they DID get farther, and thus she knows how much work it takes to get even close to the Nationals.

But instead it turns into a whole bunch of "I made Kousaka-san angry again". Yeesh.

Great episode. Loved the training montage. Never thought I'd see the word "ictus" in an anime. The breath before they started playing was really good (probably something only a musician can appreciate).

Aww this is so adorable. The complacent 3rd years better buff up and accept being in a band is hard work or else it's just pointless.

Kuniko is starting to feel more like a protagonist now, she is not influencing things that moves the plot faster,, but I'm glad to see her developing like her apologizing awkwardly while studdering her words with Kousaka and requested the bored girl to play. Kind of liking how they are making little details and giving personality to the enormous cast. I wonder why asuka feels so indifferent to the state of the band, it's obvious that she has something to say in all of this but she just keeps it underneath all the brilliant one liners she has.

Kind of sad about the flute girl, she probably has quit, I didn't see her at the section when the final ensemble was in motion. But after 3 years of playing and you can't play in tune, she either has not put in the effort or is not cut out for it.

I think it's pretty realistic. If you know you have a habit of putting your foot in your mouth pretty much every time you open it, you'd try to avoid talking where possible and if you must, you'd overthink what you're about to say just to make sure you wouldn't piss anyone off with it.

I have to agree. But what tipped me off was when one of the characters (I think French horn player) complained about this band "having traditions" and that the sensei wasn't following them. This shows just how stuck in the rut many of the older girls are. They also cared to much about the commendatory with each other then actually sounding like a band. They thought that alone was enough.

You can really see the difference between the Japanese and US music programs. In the US we'd never have a section leader meeting to decide the future of the band, the band director (and whatever staff) did all that. What they said, we would do. No questions asked. If a mouthpiece was thrown at the band director, that person would have been removed from the band, if not suspended.

A few things I did like was the director testing the physical status of each member. Checking their breathing control, etc. In marching band that would be tested on a daily basis just by marching and playing. I also liked how practice/sectional work is part of club's activities. That's not done here because people live far from the school. Practice is done at home. Ensemble is done daily in class.

Him giving them a weekly rehearsal schedule was brilliant, IMO. The looks on all their faces were priceless. If they want to go to nationals, they'll need to put in the work. It's not different than any other competing club. The man get's two thumbs up from me.

Now, the characters themselves. I'm loving how Kumiko isn't some loud mouth, want to be the ace, character. She's one who's, like was stated, a male version of Kyon. She's not highly emotional, full of self-doubt, knows what needs to be done, has standard parent/child/older sibling issues and is not a highly motivated/average student. Again, I would like to know more about her and her old sister issues. We know they aren't getting along.

I love the energy Sapphire and Hazuki bring into the story. Reina brings the experience/seriousness to this mix also. Sapphire and Reina about both highly skilled in their instruments. Hazuki is that eager learning. They all round out the group (thus the red thread in the ED). It's not as stereotypical as other Kyoani animes. This is a breath of fresh air. Makes me look forward to Tuesdays (after The Flash...lol).

Many are saying it's slow. As I have said many times, if someone made a movie of your life I bet audiences would be complaining that a lot of your life is boring. Slice-of-lifes are completely different than action/adventure series. Low it for what it is. This is a pretty good series, worthy of a 9, depending on how the other episodes go.
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

Pleasant once again the episode. The narrative was up to expectations of what I hoped and also as a product of high rank.
The plot and the script, give a feeling of seriousness really tangible and make it interesting; He is coming off an anime increasingly committed and never boring, so far.
Drawings and animations good, same for the scenery beautiful.
Catchy soundtrack.

P.S. Also it is known that in this production, as in other very recent, a return also of female figures not just lean; but also quite as robust physique. Maybe so want to please all tastes male and not be sexist?

It's finally starting to pick up :D I think I'm still undecided about how I feel about the teacher, but it'll be interesting to see how much of an impact he has on the band… I think I like Kumiko. She has some really cute reactions, although I think her character is a wee bit bland. I kind of like the normal-ness of the characters though. I mean obviously, since it's by KyoAni, it's very much a slice of life anime. I hope next week will be even better :)

This reminds me of high school orchestra soooo much. Our conductor was great and was not afraid to call us out for not playing as well as we could (or perhaps I should say WORKING as hard as we could). I 100% approve of the tough style of teaching. As a former lazy teenager (and current lazy adult), sometimes the best thing is a swift kick in the ass! You generally have to care to be tough.

While I'm still a little disappointed that we haven't yet seen a whole lot of Kousaka, I'm starting to like their teacher. Seeing them practice and getting better was a pretty satisfying experience as well, though I have to say that it seemed like a pretty sudden difference to their previous performances. I'm alright with it, I suppose it would've been tedious if they dragged out their basic practice even more, we're already at episode four after all. I don't know how much more of these really awkward ensembles I would've been able to watch through, anyway, haha.

I like the way the teacher works. It felt kind of like one of those "non traditional teachers who inspires their students" trope that was popular in the 90's. It was a slow episode, but it was still handled quite well. I liked the episode, but I think the next episode will be a lot better, since its SunFes and all!

Natsuki-senpai is the best girl.

KyoAni must be doping. That's how other production staffs must have felt when they saw in the ending credit that just 7 staffs were drawing the original pictures (原画) for this episode (22:39). Including Taichi Ishidate who has just completed directing Kyokai no Kanata Movie.

Episode Storyboards: Tatsuya Ishihara (Haruhi) and Naoko Yamada (K-On!)
Episode Direction: Ai Yukimura (Chihayafuru 2)
Episode Animation Director: Chiyoko Ueno (many of Kyoani's series)

I agree and loved the way you described kumiko. She is quite an interesting MC and i would love to know more about her. I also love her assertiveness, she takes the initiative by confessing her thoughts to Kousaka and getting Nakagawa back into practice. An assertive MC is what i always look forward to when watching anime.

it was nice to see the teacher get involved in actually teaching the students. I can't pretend to understand everything about the world of Japanese music education considering most of my knowledge comes from anime (lol) But the end of the day I can't imagine any band which has both beginners and intermediates having to try and figure things out on their own. He reminds me of my own music teacher from High School, just as tough and striving for nothing but perfection.

Starting to like Kumiko more as her character develops still would like to see more progression out of her also to finally resolve this old tension with her former classmate, if Reina recalls at all (probably does). Got a feeling Reina is seriously crushing on the teacher considering she seems to be very passionate about standing up for him.
