Never thought they'd dive into a mystery related to food but here we are. Kobato also seems like the type of person who is good at hiding his feelings but always curious about what's around him.

Oh and I think the letterbox format works well for this show now. It tells its narrative well through that style. Can't wait to see how much more they will develop Kobato.

That hot cocoa looked so tempting not going to lie, jeez it looks really good. Once again for the fourth time today, animation looks really damn good and the cinematic feel with this was really pleasant too. Saw a 15 minute roughly breakdown of the mystery of preparing hot cocoa with three mugs which should be boring and overly 'ordinary' on paper but the anime did manage to make it relatively engaging enough while the first few minutes feel like there is more to come with what happened to Osanai's bike and how she got blamed for it. I don't know if this is a great series or not but hey, I'm more intrigued by this than Hyouka and I like the main duo more too. Not having a Chitanda-annoying presence is an addition by subtraction here. Feels like this episode managed to get something out of very little. I also liked while the two of them and Kengo's sister were in mystery mode, in the background on the other side of the room, the shadow of Kengo was animated with him moving around which is also great attention to detail there and showcases that the animation and focus on details here is the real deal. I'll see if they can up the cases themselves with the upcoming episodes but for what sounds dull on paper, this was better than expected.

Can’t believe I watched an episode entirely dedicated to solving how Kengo made hot cocoa and enjoyed every second of it. Bro is a psycho for microwaving an entire box of milk. Only the studio that made Undead Girl Murder Farce could make a dialogue episode like this enjoyable, 😂.

Kengo’s sister was awesome and I love how she bounced off Yuki and Kobato. Who would’ve ever imagined there could be so many possible ways to make hot chocolate, the combinations are almost endless lol.

Kobato doing the absolute cinema pose is definitely going to be a meme and the studio knew what they were going for there! Pretty cool how there’s no intricate backstory or reason for him wanting to be ordinary, dude just wants a chill life.

I still don’t get why they’d try and blame Yuki for getting her bike stolen because it was at the scene of a crime.. victim blaming is insane there. At least she got some cake in the end though!

Nice chill episode, can’t wait for the next one. Kobato says he’s done being a detective but I doubt it.

The problem is they were handling the milk while doing the test cases for making the cocoa and would have noticed if the carton was warm long before. (Also I’m going to presume milk cartons in Japan are not the waxed cardboard kind we have here because the carton would fall apart if heated.)

I figured he must have heated milk in the one cup, mixed in three cups worth of cocoa to that one, divided out a third each to the other two cups, then filled them up and heated them all in the microwave.

Kind of wondering about the show premise now. I figured they’d be avoiding getting into meatier conundrums than cocoa spoons in order to ‘be normal’, but it’s starting to feel like Kobato assumes ‘normal’ equals not thinking at all. :-/

Did no one else think that you could have just added cocoa, bit of cold milk, stirred them all, topped them all up with cold milk and then stuck them in the microwave? Instead of sticking a whole thing of milk in the microwave and then back in a fridge!!?? Madness.

Starting to get a better idea of what this shows about now. I still really like the main 2 mc’s dynamic.

I don’t mind kengo his an alright character, but like if he one day dropped of the face of the earth I wouldn’t mind.

I gotta say tho the animation is beautiful, props to the studio cause I was noticing a lot of very subtle details in this episode within the animation which hardly ever get attention in an anime

Chisato san is cute and amusing, need more of her. Mystery of good hot cocoa and it took Kobato a while to solve the mystery. Can see why he quit doing detective work, he's not that good at it. So much for Kengo being efficient btw lol, he's just lazy and sloppy. Animation/visuals looked so good again.

Inhuman characters.
Well made but dead background drawings that don't matter (geography was super important last episode, now there was two animated discussions separated by a half open door and not one of them noticed the other).
Boring "cinematography" with the characters wandering somewhere else when the discussion gets too boring.
Uninteresting and super obvious "mystery" (seriously, solution was my first guess! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhHHH!)
He doesn't realize he is still acting a bit "chuunibyou".

Kindergardem Murakami, I'm done with this.
Oh, go watch Yatagarasu people, is super good! I almost missed it!.

edit: maybe it's just too deep for me...
Someone could please explain?
What was the "purpose" of this "mystery", of this whole scene? What it adds to the story? What it tells about the characters? What was being conveyed by it? What exactly Kobato did of different that he had to apologize to Osanai?

Had my eyebrow raised when he started waffling about the preperation just to find out the episode would be about the cocoa mystery lol.

Considering Kengo's psychotic beheaviour it's fitting for him to look like the Joker with his lips smeared from the cake. Furthermore, I picture the old Jougorou as a mad annoying person from how he described him.

Though this is the theoretical definition, but we actually someone executing the same here, which later kind of lead to our mystery of the week segment lol. Can't say I felt bored even for a second watching three people putting arguments as to how and why the sink isn't wet when it should be xD

This was awful. At the start of the episode I continued to think there's something really off with the scrip and how the characters talk, but then they started overreacting about a fucking cocoa for the reminder of the episode. I fast forwarded almost the whole episode because there was nothing in it. Making a long scene about it would be already bad but it was a whole, damn episode.

On a side note, sneaking in pointless stills to save up on animation to continue the appearance of higher quality from the first episode. Looks like this series will be a huge letdown.

I really like this anime, I didn't expect to spend the whole episode on a hot chocolate mystery but i don't mind slow animes and the vibe is nice, kinda surrealist, i like it. putting the entire carton of milk in the microwave and then back in the fridge is deranged behaviour though what the hell are you doing Kengo

@PaninaManina i imagine we're gonna get details on that as the show progresses, my gess is they made some sort of promess to become normal together or something, and for kobato that means not using his super hot chocolate detective powers… as for the purpose of the mystery, to me it feels similar to the first episode, setting up the ambiance and the characters, it looks like it's gonna be a slow ride

Loving how real the characters feel. The expressions and dialogue feel so natural, nothing said or done feels forceful or improbable.

I’m happy to say I figured out how Kengo made the drinks before Kobato did. I was more invested in how that damn cocoa was made than most murder mysteries I’ve watched, haha 😁

If he stirred the cocoa with a bit of cold milk then chances are it would still be lumpy. The entire trick to making it “nice” is that the hot milk at the start dissolves the powder into a perfect paste without unwanted clumps of cocoa appearing in the final result. I’ve made cocoa too many times to not know this 😂

@CaffieneKitty except they didn't. I also thought they touched the milk carton at first but those testing that they did are just re-imagining of what kengo might have done. they didn't actually touch the milk carton during all of it.

It really irks me that they would chastise Osanai for having her bike stolen by the delinquent. That's victim blaming. And I bet she still didn't get it back either for some BS reason like "because it was evidence used in a crime" or some other nonsense. I hope the school counselor or whoever grilled her; gets their car tires slashed and/or the driver-side windows smashed with a brick. And then the next day I'd act shocked like "That sucks, eh. Guess ya should have parked it somewhere that was safer then, huh."...asshole.

The mystery this time around is a light one all about good hot cocoa. I'd be way too lazy to go through all those steps, so much so I wouldn't even use milk, just take some hot water from the tea kettle that's always kept hot. Although seeing that fancy microwave-oven hybrid makes me want one now...they look like they'd be quite efficient and space-saving for small apartments since it's a 2-in-1. Also, did Kobato forget he needed to use the bathroom?

I don't blame Kengo for licking the cake wrapper...those cakes looked delicious. It was nice of them to buy a 4th piece of cake for older sister Chisato too. Unless Osanai was just planning on having an extra piece before they got the call to come over. Although putting the whole carton of now hot milk back into the fridge is a line crossed, one where I totally get why the sister was pissed.

I'm curious about what happened in middle school for Kobato to "quit playing the detective".

@DarkingGirl the ‘special technique’ cocoa thing required the cocoa be mixed with a bit of Hot milk first though. Presumably cold milk mixed and nuked wouldn’t have sufficed.

Also, based on the ‘add sugar to taste’ part of the instructions It seems like the cocoa being mixed is just straight cocoa powder, not a hot chocolate mix, so it wouldn’t dissolve easily when wet the way a premade mix would.

I really like this series, Hontoni...
Osanai Yuki is kawaii too in every shot of her face.

The visual is great.
The story is simple, the mystery case by daily life around MC. I like this type of the show, like Hyouka as one of my top 10 favorite anime.

I guess Chisato's voice (Kengo's sister) is Anzai Chika. Because the voice similar to Nishikigi Chisato from Lycoris Recoil!

This show, like Days with My Stepsister, have an odd...perspective. These SOL stories are being told with an analytical viewpoint. Ordinary characters slowly discuss their lives and events as though they are case studies of various psychologies.
It is unusual and, for me, refreshing.

Between this episode and the first one, the mysteries covered sure are mundane. I guess it kind of fits with the idea of them trying to being ordinary, but, at the same time, it's funny for me how the two protagonists talk about the mysteries afteward and treats Kobato solving them like it was such a big deal when they are such simple cases.
But I'm quite intrigued if they are going to keep on this route of light-hearted mysteries and slice of life vibes, or if they are going to create an overarching plot with increasing stakes on the cases. I'm betting more on the second path, especially considering how they are hitting on something bad that happened with Kobato endeavors as a detective.
Also, it's just me, or hasn't Osanai shown any special talent so far? I mean, don't get me wrong, she seems smart and all but not on a special level like Kobato since the anime hasn't shown her solving any cases, like it has shown him doing twice now. She participated more this time around, but, ultimately, it was him that solved the mystery. So, I wonder if her special thing that makes her non-ordinary is another trait differently from Kobato's detective's abilities or if it's the same thing and they are just going to show more of it later.

Enjoyed this episode a lot more than the first.
Maybe part of it was that I didn't feel the threat of being late to something looming over me and driving my anxiety through the roof lol.
But I also felt like I had more tools to think about the mystery alongside the characters, so I had more fun. This conclusion felt satisfying both in the logic and in the way that it tied in the character clues we were getting from Kengo (what a psychopath).
Also interested in the questions it's setting up for Kobato's character.

The visuals continue to be strong, and the way they depict simple actions so beautifully does a lot for the mood. I could watch these scenes over and over.

Interesting that some people say it was boring while others are loving it. Personally I'm in the second group.

I think it's in the direction. Despite it being an ordinary topic the way it was presented had me fully immersed in the "mystery." Sure, they could have asked Kengo, but that's less fun, and since his sister presented it as a "challenge," then asking would have been admitting defeat.

It's interesting to hear a little bit more about what Kobato was like before, I imagine we'll get the same for Osanai later.
