Happy Birthday to Taichi! And it's also so nice to see Chihaya and the team give back to the community, in particular the kids.

It's also noticable that Chihaya and everyone else wore their same shirt together to show their passion of karuta. So much energy and passionate feelings thrown into this episode and there's only one more left .

Hosoya-san's character practicing w. his association.

36 people participated for competition to celebrate Mamo's character's b-day. His kiss for reward?!

3 vs. 3. Though Main girl and Mamo's character left to fight each other. Everyone else had fun.

Next day, the two of them talking since there's no club activity. Mamo's character was able to confess to her, as well as honest about not liking her thinking about Hosoya-san's character.

Then thinking about how to invite new club members. Mamo's character left before intro., though.

Since Mamo's character got rejected, Karuta became dark for him.

One more ep.

Six years waiting for it, and it was... It was just perfect.
Most emotional episode in the entire series - aside from Fujisaki's finale, that's a close one. I'm letargic. The soundtrack for the moment of the confession... The way Chihaya said the painful sorry. Everything. The ending. The way you could feel Taichi's pain through the way he grabbed her... Their lines... Their lines through the whole episode... The happiness in the beginning and the sadness in the end. I just...

I have so MUCH to unpack with this episode. Taichi you damn BAKA!!!! But on the other hand, finally taking responsibility, telling the truth after all those years and doing something for yourself for once. But geez......

DO NOT EVER CONFESS LOVE TO SOMEONE AND THEN MENTION THE OTHER PERSON!! You don't mention a 3rd person unless you want a threesome. And the way Arata was brought into it... OF COURSE CHIHAYA IS GONNA FEEL LIKE SHIT AND NOT RESPOND POSITIVELY EVEN IF HER FEELINGS COULD BE MUTUAL. Like how dare she have feelings and potential love for another person not you and you basically shame her for it? BAKA TAICHI!!!!

You put pressure on her in an unfair way but good for you quitting the club to figure yourself out but WTF was with that timing? Why not the day before the club demos? Ugh! I don't even want to get into the nonconsensual kiss. That was totally selfish of Taichi. Like is he trying to hurt her because she hurt his feelings? WTF???

Anyways, it is good he's stepping away from the club to focus on himself. He only joined for her to notice him and didn't seem to actually enjoy competitive karuta. She was always going to reject him because romance is just not something in Chihaya's sphere right now and how he told her not liking the Chihaya that likes Arata was awful. At least she gave him an answer so he can stop pining now and move on.

Damn those shirts were ugly and best reaction today was Harada Sensei upon hearing the Taichi Cup prize. LOL He don't care to kiss him as long as he wins!

So tense and painful..... I've been over this so many times. Madhouse did a very good job. It left me just as numb as the manga......

The turnpoint of the story. Now you'll have to grow up Chihaya.

You either relate too much or too little with Taichi. "Anyways,.." paragraph was just you being you and it felt erroneous. From broad perspective, it wouldn't be wrong to say that there's more than that - that's why Taichi felt conflicted. That is, to stand side-by-side with Chihaya you'd have to love Karuta.

Those lines about Arata weren't spoken out loud, though. They are in cursive. It's just his thoughts, just like Chihaya's musings about Arata after that. Can't blame the boy for his thoughts when he's being completely honest with himself at last.

Chihaya is selfish too, running after him and crying "don't leave the club", like yeah so it's about the club and he have to stay despite the heartache just because you want your cozy club to keep going like nothing's ever happened

Okay, that was intense. Our 6 years long wait wasn't in vain. I still remember the day i first saw those panels (as bad photos in someone's twitter). The way the seiyuu delivered all those lines was spectacular, i could barely breathe half of the episode. The soundtrack and especially the silence hit me right in the feels. Personally, it was a revelation for me that the lines "Uso da" was Taichi's, since the manga left me with the impression that it was Chihaya thinking "It can't be! It can't be!". But the fact that it was actually Taichi thinking "It's just a joke" adds a lot to the drama! We're witnessing his inner struggle, when his mind offers him yet another easy way out - to turn everything into a joke (after seeing Chihaya's reaction he definitely understands she isn't going to fall into his arms with "I've always loved you too, Taichi!"). But he overcomes himself and instead of running away confirms his confession, listing every little detail and even flaw he loves in her. We can hear in his voice how hard for him to say it (Mamo 👏👏👏) but he does. There was also more real animation in this episode than usually, you can feel the effort they made. It will be too cruel for all who only watch anime to stop here where all the drama begins! The 4th season need to be announced soon! (if it's too greedy of me, blame Chihaya's example).

Thanks. It wasn't very clear. Only the part where he kept saying he was joking was clear as internal monologue because you could see his face and he wasn't speaking. Still he confessed to her and still managed to mess it up. He didn't even look her in the eye when he first said those words. I'm still mad at his timing quitting the club though.

This too. She doesn't seem to understand he can't be in the club after being rejected like that and have to spend time with her every day. He needs to be away from her so he can move on. They were both pretty selfish today actually.

Taichi's birthday was fun. :) Everybody enjoyed unofficial karuta tournament with specific rules, different from those usually used in official games.

But what came next... Wow, just wow. Scene with Taichi confessing love to Chihaya was simply beautiful. It's atmosphere, emotions, visuals... literally everything! And I'm telling that as a person who is not usually into romance scenes in animations or any other medium. Despite that I loved that scene.

Taichi left his karuta club? That was kinda expected after what Chihaya said to him. I'm surprised that he was able to do it, though. At first he wanted to spend more time with Chihaya, but through many years of playing karuta he started to love it so much. That decision must've been harsh, but I can't see any other decision after being rejected.

Because... He was rejected, right? ;p Can manga readers provide some general spoilers on what Chihaya told him and what was not presented in this episode? I'm really curious, lol.

This episode assured me that Chihayafuru 3rd Season deserves 10/10 score from me instead of "only" 9/10. :)

Sadly, only one episode of this season left. :(

OK, now I'm just scared of what may happen next. I misunderstood he didn't actually mention Arata to her but it was his inner monologue.

I think all she said was that she was sorry. I went straight to the manga since I misunderstood part of the scene and it is not made clear what she said other than "I'm sorry". I assume Taichi didn't actually hear her say it because of the school bell but understood right away.

Yeah. He was always going to mess it up. Because it wasn't even a love confession but first of all a confession of his guilt and cowardice, something he couldn't do as a child ("Please don't tell Chihaya, i don't want her to hate me" - "Have i managed to get stronger since then?"). Even the "I love you, Chihaya" was more like an answer to why he did it as a child and why he acts like that lately, avoiding her. I think it was cool from him to take off the mask of a nice guy and lay his heart bare before her like that, though maybe it wasn't a smart tactics romance-wise. Which just once again shows that for Taichi it all is a battle where he's struggling to overcome his demons, not to have fun playing cards and romance a girl. Maybe he wanted, but he just can't have it before he grows beyond his insecurities. Sad but beautiful.
Well, the worst timing ever can turn out to be just right, if it will result in growth. Depends on how you look at things. And imo both Taichi and Chihaya need some time apart to sort things out, set their own goals and find their own motivations. It's a perfect opportunity for Chihaya to try to be a leader without Taichi's support (if she wants to be a coach) and for Taichi to think of what he really wants for himself.

As a Taichi fan, this was what I’ve been both looking forward to and dreading since the start of the season. The moment when he walks away, saying all the cards had become black to him: that scene stuck with me over the years more than anything else I read in the manga. It’s wonderful to finally get this in animated form. It also feels like a turning point for both him and Chihaya.

I’m so not ready for the season to end.

He did the right thing. Told her how he felt and then decided to steer clear when he got rejected.

I'm sure some people will come to the conclusion that he wasn't really rejected, but when someone reacts like she did, or doesn't react at all, it is a rejection. She may have been surprised but she had a bit of time to process it before she went out to make the recruitment speech.

But being childish, as ever, she decided to chase him when she should have just left him alone if she couldn't return his feelings or wasn't sure how she felt yet.

At least he still has Sumire who is looking out for him. She's a better girl anyway, although he obviously doesn't think so.

As I said previously, there are times when quitting is the right thing to do and he just needs to move on and take a time out.

I predicted in the last thread he'd confess and screw it up somehow. Oh boy did he ever!

We are in agreement. Read my replies from the previous episode 21 thread and they are pretty much in line with what you said. Taichi needs to be away from Chihaya and figure stuff out for himself for once. I also don't feel they are right for each other and you articulated why; he's too insecure with himself. It's like that saying that you must love yourself before others can love you. Taichi seems to have some self loathing going on and his rivalry with Arata seems to bring out the worst in him sometimes. I maintain in his match with Arata that he beat himself and not the other way around. While Arata was enjoying playing with Taichi, Taichi instead made it all about a battle for Chihaya, lost his cool and lost (the card he wanted was never read). How is he supposed to concentrate or function at anything if he's revolved his life around Chihaya? he's not even #1 of the class anymore. He needs time away from her and work on himself and figure out if he even cares about karuta. I think he loves the game but maybe for the wrong reasons?

Chihaya also needs to get away from this idea that Taichi has to always be around for her. She has been incredibly selfish towards him since day one. She has been taking him for granted this whole time and looking forward to Arata since he;'s not around. I'm seeing just how selfish she is in the middle of this. So I wonder if Arata was also always around, would she take him for granted too?

Arata contemplating his and taichis match, referencing the chihaya card, if he could have defended it from taichi or would taichi take it from him. Almost foreshadowing and interesting thought.
Taichi cup really lifted the spirits, everyone joining in and having fun. Especially Taichi, looking at everyone, remembering all the moments of his life upto turning 18 and thinking how far he has come in life and if he has become strong. That was some good stuff.

Coming to the main part. I am glad he finally managed to confess and get that heavy burden off his chest.
But kinda foresaw that rejection.
I can understand taichi's position and know how it feels, it fcking hurts to the core and it actually feels all dark and end of the world vibes.
But the reality and fact of the matter is, Love cant be forced nor can you persuade someone to love you.
And i understand Taichi was just venting out his feelings and being honest, but he shouldn't have brought up Arata during the confession and in that manner. That made it even more worse.

Also you cant blame chihaya, she has her own emotions and feelings & even though she is a naive goofball, she does understand a little about what she feels, shown when she was clear in the head of what she was thinking during the confession and gave Taichi a proper answer at the end.

Taichi leaving the club makes sense for now, as its a big mental torture and a heartache for him to stay there, but watching the members cry and worried for him was really sad.
And the last scene just added more to the pain, "Do you really think, i am made of stone" really hit deep in the feels.

The dark Karuta phase has started for him and its gonna be a really tough period for him, but tbh its actually a good time for him to focus on himself and grow more as a character and hopefully he can come out of the phase with answers he has been looking for.

Can't blame her for how she feels at all. But she is still incredibly selfish to chase him down the street like that. She just needs to grow up. Most of us have been in both of their positions and the one thing you don't do to someone you reject is make a selfish plea like that.

This episode is truly heartbreaking. I actually teared up a little towards the end.

Taichi is one of the most humane characters I've ever seen in anime. He's far from being perfect. He's insecure. He makes mistakes. He gets jealous, mad jealous. He also is madly in love with Chihaya. So much in love that he can't think rationally and ends up hurting himself over and over. He's just a confused teenager with very messed up feelings. Plus he has a demon as a mother. Man, I just want him to be happy genuinely for once. I hope staying away from karuta and Chihaya helps him achieve that...

It's easy to like Arata (he used to be my fave), but I find Taichi more complex and more relatable in many ways.

Probs to the director, the animation team, and the great Miyano Mamoru for that insanely powerful adaptation.

Man, I wonder how long do we have to wait for a season 4... Please Madhouse don't toss Chihayafuru aside again.

Earlier in the season, I said I wonder if Taichi is going to end up sort of being the male version of Rem (super popular among the fans but rejected by the MC), and honestly, this episode felt a little like his "I love Emilia" moment. Anyway, don't fret too much, Taichi, you have plenty of options, buddy.

But two things I appreciated from Taichi this episode:

1) Him finally owning up to the glasses thing. Better late then never.

2) The fact that he recognized he has been on the other end of this soooo many times. Countless girls have confessed their feelings to him over the years and he has rejected every last one of them.

That was a crazy episode....and I was completely wrong about how Taichi would confess to Chihaya at the end of the "Taichi cup." But this also works haha.

Dang, Taichi's confession was nicely set up but sadly Chihaya rejected him. Really sucks for Taichi, but that also goes for Chihaya as well. Having to reject a close friend like that must've been really hard for her. And then he leaves the club which puts a dampener on the whole club demo that the girls are about to do.

Now that non consensual kiss really surprised me, can't exactly understand why Taichi would go for that kinda move but it sure shocked Chihaya and myself. And the cards appear black for Taichi? I guess he's gonna need some self reflecting in order to see their color again.

I enjoyed Arata's part in this episode, despite it being only for a couple minutes. Hopefully there will be a 4th season so we can see him play against Taichi again. That is if Taichi continues to play karuta.

Amazing episode! Now I'm really eager for next's week finale, now more than ever!

Why must I give the price?", I loled hard there; the begining with the Taichi cup was hilarious, with the randomness of it and that prize (Taichi's reaction was one of the best jokes in the whole series), but it had also some heartwarming moments, as Hyoro remembering that Geipen game against the Chihayafuru team, everyone feeling joy from this weird karuta cup or Taichi beeing thankful to everyone.

"I'm still thinking it was a raven", pff, Chihaya never changes; after the cup, the episode takes a complete oposite direction in tone, serious, dramatic and tenseful, a simple encounter of both Taichi and Chihaya there in the karuta club became in something unforgettable, the wind rises, the sun shines and the mood is stablished as Taichi decides to make clear his feelings for her, once and for all, and he finally confesses. Props to Madhouse, it was a truly beautiful moment, the animation was smooth and the buildup was fantastic.

"Do you think I'm made of stone?", that was hard; some days (I guess) after the confession and all still feels tense, something has definitely changed and it hardly will be the same, a new year has began and although all still feels fresh, they have to continue, the clubs must present themselves in an attempt to get new members, but the news of Taichi's retire hit hard, and Chihaya tries to get him back. I must admit that those last scenes were painful, Tsukue and Nikuman worried about Taichi, the sensei sorry, I forgot her name telling them about his retirement, Chihaya crying in front of all the school, Taichi's stating he can't play karuta anymore and, for God's sake, that kiss at the end; something I love from that scene is how it's kind of... uncomfortable, with all the journey for both characters, it should be like a payoff, but it doesn't, instead it feels more like a punch, it's hard to watch, no matter which side you are, cruel but appropiate.

An astonishing episode

Edit: Almost forgot it, but seeing Arata finally getting some members for a karuta club, even if they're from him society, was wonderful.

Finally, Taichi also confessed! And my boy Arata can finally form a karuta club at his school.

It was such a delightful episode but then the last 8 minutes turned into a different direction.
And for fans of the series, how did you guys manage to wait for the 3rd. season? I watched the previous seasons a couple of days before this one aired and I couldn't wait for it to start, and now I feel I'll have a empty space when the anime finishes, sure I can look at the manga but the way the anime is getting done is magnificent, and I want more of this.

So ... season 4 will most likely have:

- the last team tournament for chihaya
- probably chihaya vs shinobu (queen match or in the individual tournament after the teams one)

It's amazing how every scene starring Taichi manages to make me hate him more. How does anyone stand this annoying lump? I'm glad he's out of the club - hopefully he's out of the show full stop.
I don't hate Taichi but I get where you are coming from. I really hate the author for using Taichi to get sympathy points from the audience every time. It becomes so fucking annoying.

Stunning episode! Possibly my favourite of the franchise, thus far! Already watched it a couple times and most certainly more in preparation to next week's finale episode.

Direction has been fantastic from the start but this, right here, takes the throne for me. Buildup to Taichi's confession followed by the confession and then that bit in the end, I seriously need a Season 4 of this! Like, desperately!

I'm just speechless, really. Often, I would just post a huge bucket-load of text of various event/points of the episode but this just blew me away. Taichi's been my favourite character of the show and to see him dig into into this mess further is just crippling. I'm just really glad that I didn't rush and binge read the manga last year, at the moment.

Chihaya's quiet "I'm sorry" is going to haunt for years...

I binged Seasons 1 & 2 within a couple days and a half over in early Summer 2018 or so and, trust me when I tell you, that one year span alone was tough. Incredibly so at the start especially due to post-anime depression and whatnot but YT recommendations, real life Karuta updates (which I actually kept a track for a good year or so) or even just casually ending up on the prequel two season pages here on MAL, somehow just kept finding its way to me and making it hard to resist the manga even more (currently getting that with Kaguya-sama: Love is War). And coupled with SanGatsu no Lion...

This hurt me so much!!! I’m sorry Taichi but sometimes in life you’ll get rejected😭 ugh but the line where he said “do you think I’m made of stone” hit hard. Chihaya can be a little too selfish sometimes

I can't really understand why people are blaming Taichi for speaking his feelings. He was fighting his inner demons this whole time to overcome his cowardice and he finally did it. Framed it up, put it in context, and confessed. He should've done this ages ago, but better late than never.

But, man. I was so sure where this was headed back in Season 1 and 2, then Season 3 just tore everything apart. I can't wait to see how they put it back together in Season 4. This being on Episode 23 will probably be one of the worst cliffhangers in anime.

This episode was hectic! Definitely the best episode of the entire season.Although I'm a Chihaya×Arata shipper I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
Btw anyone who's read the manga could you please tell who Chihaya ends up with?
