I thought this episode was gentle and magical.

A mother's worry about her son is always something difficult. That thread (I think it's called Yoshitsu or something) is featured in this episode and I thought it was a neat element.

Another great episode. Light on the drama but still captivating.
And oh man the ost was brilliant so bonus points for that.

Felt a little nostalgia as I recently handed in an essay based on a part of the textile industry.

That was pretty interesting yet quite soothing.

It all beginning with Ginko meeting Gen's mother. Where she made a robe from the threads she gathered. Accidentally taking the same threads from her son and made him sick.

Still, I liked how Gen's mother was always by his side. Through the robe and being an angel watching over him.

Glad it was a happy ending with Yui getting better and Gen being a normal boy after meeting his mother again. ^^

Aaaah.. another gentle and light atmosphered Mushishi goodness....

The message of the story is pretty simple for this one. A relationship between a mother and her child. It is very nice how thorough the episode that the mother was being pictured as an "angel" who watched over her son even though her physical body was "paralysed"... This probably tells us that a mother's love is something that is beyond everything.

5/5. Marvellously and gently well done.

HOW TO SAVE ANIME IN THREE SIMPLE STEPS

  1. To have Mars of Destruction, Skelter Heaven, and Pupa properly adapted in TV series form by Madhouse
  2. To have Inferno Cop properly adapted in TV series form by Bones, director: Urobuchi Gen
  3. An anime crossover of Mushishi x ARIA x Haibane Renmei.

Should even one of the above conditions cannot be done, anime is still at risk.

Yay!! Finally an episode which ended with me having a grin on my face ^^

Happy ending :3 Poor Yui though. Glad she's alright now :)

Really though, I find it kinda weird how the common civilians know somewhat about Mushishi but whenever someone acts abnormally they think they're crazy. Shouldn't they know about Mushi? It's kinda sad when u see a person living their life in suffering while they can easily be treated by a mushishi :(

Really great episode, I love it!
This episode didn't have a sad ending too :).
So his father knew about mushi since he was a baby. Instead of helping his son he just told him that he was crazy lol.
Poor Yui, she managed so much ether that she was controlled by it, so good they could solve it in a nice way.
I'm learning English so maybe I make mistakes :)

Noticed that Mushishi has brought 2 back-to-back episodes with happy ending. Foreshadowing a feels episode sometime soon? :O

Mushi Trivia

Gen is such a gangster though; beating people up and sh!t. So strong, even the elders are frightened of him.
Ginko's remark on his current self was pretty funny though. "Look at you, so big and strong now. To think such a scrawny thing would grow up like this..." XD

That robe was very beautiful! In the manga, it looked kinda bland without any color. Glad they put varieties of soft coloring in constant motion on the robe.

Nice seeing Yui's story through her conversation with Ginko. What happened to Gen was completely an accident. Good thing Ginko's suggestion was taken in account immediately.

Just like the previous one, this issue was also solved without any further impedance. It was only Yui that could extract Gen's extra Yōshitsu as a mother.
The bond between mother and son shown this episode was incredible, Yui was watching over Gen as an "angel." Just amazing.

Ginko moping about developing a more potent medicine was pretty funny. That pride as a Mushishi was hit a little this time around as his medicine didn't work.

Great episode, once again. As feared, next week we'll have a (somewhat) feels episode. Be prepared for "Sea of Otherworldly Stars."

This episode felt very nice overall. I love how Ginko didn't do much at all using his mushishi abilities, but still helped resolve the issue. It was nice to see that just having the mother and son together, things started looking much better. Yui's yearning to see her son caused her to become that way, and because of that, her husband didn't want to show Gen what became of his mother. Little did he know that everything would be alright if he could just let them be together. The part that I really liked was when Gen finally saw his mother, but instead of reacting in a negative way (maybe being distraught or sad), instead, he said that he knew her. I was also very happy to see Gen being able to play with other kids normally at the end too. Heh, so Ginko doesn't have to make a more potent medicine ^^

Due to the unfortunate separation between son and mother because of the accident that caused the son's illness, the kid became violent with the others around him and the mother became so distant wishing to see him, that she left her body and became the "angel" in the sky so she could watch over him even being apart. That said, it was only necessary for them be reunited for both problems to be resolved and Ginko's assistance was not even really necessary (the first time he already had solved the major problem). Beautiful...

Great episode!

Wonderful story again with a violent Gen who can match Pepe in a brawl
The beautiful scenes appeared when Ginko's flashback started about Yui the mother of Gen

In the end things wrapped up well as if the mushi was never there except Ginko gaining the Kimono with ether threads

It’s unfortunate how misinterpretations break apart relationships. The mother was cast away as an abnormality due to her newfound perspective on life, but she still continued to watch over her son nonetheless. I guess it’s human nature to respond with fight or flight to situations that are difficult to comprehend on a personal level. Well, in the end, Ginko’s explanations to the father and the son’s yearning to see his mother were what connected the severed bond between the father and the mother.

What I still don’t get is why some people aren’t aware of mushi when there is concrete evidence and numerous cases of mushi affecting humans. Is the existence of imperceptible beings that hard for them to grasp? Or is this just another scenario of an isolated village with inhabitants that are left in the dark about what’s happening elsewhere?

A mother's love and the longing of a child for his mother. When she was reunited with her child, she slow came back to life, and the son let go of his anger. Love how Mushishi explores and handles existential themes.

"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

Brilliant episode as ever, and nice to have a truly happy ending for a change.

What's with the mother and grandmother though? Both were almost fair haired and had slightly more Caucasian faces too.

Best face.

I kind of really wish Ginko had his own kid. He would make the best faces and just be awesome in general.
A shame that he basically can never "settle down".

Did anyone else catch the twist at the end? He said he didn't need to give Gen any medicine after all when he saw him playing with the other kids. That means Gen never had an ether imbalance and he just needed his mother. I thought that part was pretty nice. Also, that explains the green medicine not working I think.

I'm guessing since this & last week's episodes are the only one without two pages of discussion (at least at the time of this posting, I don't know when the cut-off point is) that these are the weakest episodes of the cour. Now with last week's episode, I'd agree but I'm not sure I do with this episode.

Truth be told, it's not surprising to see this reaction, as both this week & last week share a number of similarity. Mostly in the lost of connection, unwittingly having the mushi form some kind of bridge, the father being at fault & the resolution being rather simple. Personally, I find this episode the much, much stronger piece. Firstly, because I just like the cast of characters a lot more in this one. Secondly, the bond between a mother & son is more, I don't know, pure? It speaks more to me than the central one in episode four though that one did give us more of build for the relationship. Of course, last weeks also tackled dependency more than this one did so yeah. Thirdly, I just find it thematically stronger. The angel mushi, how the mother returning home heals her, the resolution to Gen's "anger" issues (which were clearly rooted in the mother) & the imagery here with the ether as clothing threads, just works for me better. & this happy ending, was a lot stronger for me than the previous. Really, really strong piece. Based on my divisible by three theory with Zoku Shou, next episode should be among my favorites.
