It sure was a strange episode...
We had the story retold once from Captain Global's perspective, and now another flashback episode, this time with Hikaru having some weird dreams.
This being said,i still liked the episode. It adds some psychological features to the series and is pretty dramatic. Still weird tho'

Re-used scenes = No thanks.

Captain Global's episode was a recap. This was just taking the piss/budget problems.

After a great episode like the last one we get the worst one until now for sure. The concept could be interesting, but 90% of this episode are recycled scenes, and the episode was bad.

What a pathetic excuse of an episode this one was... recaps I can get, but just getting various chunks of animation and stitching them next to each other to form an incoherent and laughable new episode... that's a no-no... I'm telling you this episode gave Macek the Robotech idea...

Worst episode so far. If things don't get better from now on, I might give a low rating to this show.

Aha.
I loved it

This episode is a classic example of how shows actually had a budget back then.
Shows now a days won't ever have this happen because they have all the money in the world.

LOL, creative.
You're all weirdoes. I liked this episode a lot.
I'm used to hating or ignoring teenage pilots, so whenever I come back to watching this series, it surprises me just how likable Hikaru is. So I liked seeing inside his head.

Minmei, on the other hand, is an airhead, and Hikaru knows it. I can get why he has a crush on her(sweet, dedicated, whimsical, she makes a great idol and is distinctly pretty even for a cartoon girl), but it would be best if he grew out of it.

I liked the idea of diving into Hikaru's head and seeing what he thinks of the characters and that he actually DOES realize how fickle Minmay is, I mean I was sure he did think this before but in this episode he out right stated it...and the last scene of the dream made me go..."hmmmm."

Still, recycling animation was a terrible idea. But, I guess this series didn't have much of a budget given the time it came out.

Even though it's dream of sort and a weird one too, I'm relieved that Hikaru at least knows Minmay is as fickle as ever. :P

I wouldn’t say that this was the best episode, but it definitely was the most interesting. It was very impressive how they were able to take scenes from other episodes and compile them into a somewhat coherent narrative. I found it interesting how they changed some scenes to make it work for this new episode. I actually would love to see other series pull this stunt.

yep agreed I thought it was really good how they made a trippy dream out of it - I love the bit where the enemy captain guy turns into Kaifun...

I viewed this as a sort of recap episode, in which case this would be the coolest recap episode in the history of anime. I mean, just showing the scenes was good enough to recap the series, reminding us of everything that happened. So, how about instead of showing the scenes in a linear order, we splice them up and re-dub them into a semicoherant narrative? I thought it was damn cool!

That was one of the coolest episodes yet, with some pretty fun and creative use of existing scenes.
Favourite parts include Misa appearing and disappearing out of nowhere just to reuse Hikaru pointing and saying "What's that?" And saying they've been trapped for a year with clearly having 12 days marked on the wall behind them just after.

Shameless recap and recycle! But with a hilarious twist. Venomous Misa FTW X) Space bycicle :D Shower :3 Actualy it's a new little story, not just a retale. And the ending... Even though Hikaru dissmisses it now, let's face it - no one is around for poor Misa and they have already kissed once... :3

However scattered Hikaru's marbles are in his head from getting shot down, there actualy is a coherence and development in this episode which makes it more than a filler. I like creative use of old material.

Yeah, I don't remember seeing this before either. It makes the recap pretty good. It allowed to take a peek at Hikaru's inner fears and conflicts, sounds like good character development to me. Also it had some funny moments like the bike or Hikaru's reaction to Minmay turning into Misa. And keep in mind series are allowed one recap per cour, so no problem so far.

This is actually a pretty good way to see how subconsciously Hikaru may already recognize that Minmay is not going to be the girl for him. In the end, the girl he kisses is Misa, and throughout the dream he runs into Misa again and again. No sign of either of them showing up at his hospital bed though....

That was so cool! Macross at it's best has me constantly thinking to myself "this is the coolest thing I've ever seen!". I'm surprised people are complaining about them reusing footage. The repetition of the OP in particular was really great and funny, and I liked the added sfx. I've never seen anything like that and doubt I will again. Seeing the OP as a dream sequence is really gonna change how I look at it. Man. This really cements Hikaru's psychology in the viewers' mind which is absolutely beneficial, and it was executed in such a surreal way as if to intentionally blur the line between Hikaru's dream fantasy and actual flashback events. I doubt they were thinking of this, but it brings to mind how people embellish and confuse their own memories and end up remembering things differently from how they happened. I thought there were a decent amount of new animations as well; The dogfighting stuff looked particularly good. It could have just been a "best of" old clips I forgot about or something but they stood out this time. Maybe because I was on alert from the unexpected emotionally unique character of this episode. I really loved this one.

They captured the randomness of dreams well.

I didn't feel like this episode really added anything we already didn't know. This episode just seemed like a way for the studio to save $. It was really creative the way they did it though.

Was surprised to see what was essentially a clips episode so soon after the lukewarm Global's Report, but this one does it right. I thought the clips in different context actually felt dreamy in a way a lot of original dream episodes don't. It had that slightly off version of life dreams can have and I actually quite loved it. Also it furthered the emotional arc of the series pretty deeply.

This showed me one of the most interesting anime episodes ever comprised of reused footage. All under the pretext of Hikaru's coma dream, we see a handful of memorable moments from throughout the series stitched together into a new narrative, which is at times more overtly a dream sequence than others. Neon Genesis Evangelion made me think that I hated any show where we swam in a character's thoughts instead of advancing the plot, but this proved me wrong. As opposed to Eva's such episodes, Macross showed me action and excitement (Albeit recycled). Both of them deliver a psychoanalysis of their protagonist, but Macross is much less in your face about it. Through Hikaru's reliving of his tumultuous last year, we learn about his fears and motivations (Which mostly revolve around his love interest. Understandable for a 16 year old boy). Shinji's mental state is shoved straight down your throat, but even using largely new visual assets it still bored me to tears. In accordance with the principle of repetition, Macross showed me moments that I remembered and enjoyed, and reworked them into a plot which gave me a deeper understanding of a character that I actually care about, which is something Evangelion distinctly lacks.

Plus I like seeing how animation studios produce on a budget xP

Fantastic! a new episode almost exclusively made out of recycled footage! Nice usage. ^^ It was even funny at times, or weird; Just like a dream should be. Seeing how Minmei was the ultimate goal, I was eagerly anticipating Kaifun's appearance as the final boss.
Rewatching the isolation moment, even with new lines, makes me angry at Hikaru. He could just say it to his interest. (though, this is too soon probably, with her just starting to live her dream) -_-
Poor hormonal teenager just jumps to the Hayase kiss right at the end. XD

And some nice promotion for (finally) a new song: 0G Gravity. Though, I must say Cinderella is still the best song yet, far above this one or Kare ga pilot.

4/5

Now, I really want to see the famous 100% recycled (new) episodes of Daitarn 3 and some other show by Tomino.

Well, that was kind of depressing. For all we know, Minmay never showed up to the hospital, and he even ended up blaming himself in the end for the lack of progress in their relationship.

And I'm always up for a crazy fever dream episode, which are quite rare in anime, as far as I know, so I was fine with this episode.

I find it so funny when people use arguments such as "re-used animation no thanks" or "ew recap".
This was not only a really inventive recap, but also a really good episode. They perfectly captured the surreal, illogical feel of dreams and it was really something else. They really don't make them like they used to. Sad to see there's so many close-minded people that can't appreciate that, though.

Hikaru remembering things but with the characters telling him about his will to save Minmay.

The bicycle to the moon scene lol

AH BRITAI KAIFUN, the very devil in Hikaru's eyes.

What was the song Minmay was singing in Acapella before Zero G love?

not much people understood this episode it seems. it clearly isn't filler or anything, it was a "psychological trip" inside hikaru's mind. all his worries and anguishs were explicited and/or shown in metaphorical ways more or less how it's done in dreams and all. but since the average anime watcher's age is 12 I wouldn't expect everybody to understand.

Surprised to see so much negativity regarding this episode here. It might have been made mostly of reused footage but it was edited in a such a way that it really did feel like a fever dream while also giving us nice introspection of Hikaru's mind.

That was a weird way to make a recap. Still chuckling at the space bycicle and Zentradi Kaifun. Plus it's good to see Hikaru call Misa "obaasan" once again after they had 2 kisses already xD

The preview in ep. 16 says that Hikaru was hit by Milia, though I think it was pretty clear from the drawings that it was one of Misa's missiles.

Even with reusing animations, I’ve never seen a piece of media so accurately depict what a dream is like except for this episode right here. The way old memories overlap and connect to a future worry that’s only possible due to his present situation is flawless and confusing = to that of which is a dream is. Also foreshadowing what could come in te future at the same time in the same sense that deja vu = dreams that prelude future circumstances. 10/10 episode

Also critiquing a show on its lack of budget is similar to shitting on your Euchre partner for getting a crappy hand and not winning the round for you both. A shitty budget is just part of the cards that were dealt and at some point it’s time to play the cards. It’s objectively more accurate to judge someone on the way they play their cards rather than the cards that have been dealt to them.

I didn't see this line of thinking added so I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Even though it's a recap episode I believe it's more interesting to think of it as someone who is very close to death. The brain wants to restitch your memories to think it has some sort of purpose in life and Ichijou belief is to protect his idol. So this entire episode is his fulfilling to believe he has been some sort of knight to Minmay. It's nice that he was able to get closure inside his coma

Honestly a decent pacing move for the show after all the punching bag antics they've thrown at Hikaru in the last few episodes. Allows the audience to process these emotions with him and have their reactions validated by the protagonists inner fears and anxieties explicitly, whereas it would have been harder otherwise.

The new humorous spins on the voice acting for familiar scenes also helped elevate the rehashed animation a lot. The chatty bridge girls piling on Hikaru is always highly entertaining xD

Agreeing with the post from ~12 years ago, I find myself abnormally sympathetic to Hikaru compared to similar type characters.

Perhaps the best recap I have ever seen in anime.  That does not make it a masterpiece, but someone at least needs plaudits for turning what was obviously a horrible situation into a reasonably compelling episode.  Telling the scenes out of order was a brilliant touch.  This episode is a perfect example of how to accomplish a lot when given very little to work with.

What a hilariously obscure reference.  I love it!  To my knowledge, the only people left who play Euchre are in Michigan, Indiana, and Northwestern Ohio.  It has always been my card game of choice and I knew exactly what you meant.

Hikaru is like a sandbag taking beatings from everything in the macross series! Leave Minmay, Hikaru! She's only there to make you feel bad! Find a proper girl not a fickle one!!!
