They finally remembered they made an OP and ED and it was supposed to be a part of the show’s runtime. Quite typical but it looks great. Btw, it’s just one thing after another for Marilla since Anne came right? It’s testing her patience but yeah hey, that’s what kids do to you right? Lol. I’m more surprised by the fact, and finding it quite hilarious too, how Anne thought getting chewed out once is better than getting locked up inside the room, as you see, a picnic is much BIGGER deal after all lol.

Quite realistic story, but I’m glad Marilla found the broach eventually. Would’ve been uber awkward to confess that the story was made up, if somehow Marilla didn’t find the broach lol. That aside, things may look like they’re going a tad fast, but seeing Anne making friend(s) on her own, and enjoying her life to the fullest makes up for all of that stuff. Btw I said enjoy, but a lot of things happen when you’re a kid right.. moreover a kid going to school that is. That teacher was unnecessarily strict on Anne, I mean sir, you can see it wasn’t her fault at both the occasions, but yeah, because the mister was strict, it really did upset Anne in more ways than one. She’ll learn, I’m sure, but yeah, another good follow-up episode.

The OP/ED finally shows up, and Tota's OP is quite the lovely one, while Laura day romance's ED is beautifully handdrawn.

Anne being allowed to attend a Sunday school picnic, but Marilla having her Church amethyst brooch lost pressures Anne all the more to confess her own wrongdoing in the same dramatic way as possible, only worsens the relationship between Matthew's wife and the orphan to dismiss the picnic outright. But for that "falsehood" of an apology to be rehearsed the same and Marilla having found her brooch from a missed clothing, the picnic is still a go alright to spend time with Diana and the rest of the girls at the Lake of Shining Waters. At least Marilla found interest in Anne and her shticks, and that's better all the more.

It's Anne's first day in school, and her performing as expected impresses the class. And the girls being all in love and awe towards the handsome but playful Gilbert Blythe, but that Anne pays no attention to him, until Mr. Phillips saw the commotion and egregiously left out the e in her name. As if that's not enough, the constant insults in school only made matters worse by her volunteering to quit.

Anne needs to control her temper, that's for sure. But given her upbringing...this is to be expected.

It's great to know that Naoko Yamada is in charge of directing and storyboarding both the OP and ED , it definitely shows through the heavy emphasize on intricate and lively character movements. https://reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1k1amwd. Other than that I don't really like the kind of songs that being used in both of them. They are too cheerful and modern to my liking unlike the OG with the use of more grandeur feeling or orchestra which are more fitting since it's a classic literature after all.

I remember the missing brooch drama is equivalent of two episodes in the old anime. Damn son this just feels very rushed and the supposed emotion in there just fell flat for how rushed this was lmao. I was really impressed with how fast Anne was running through her story in this version. I never know she got a strong pair of feet this whole time.

Marilla and Matthew both dearly care for Anne, and it was good to see that things ended on a positive note after finding the brooch.

Gilbert went too far to get Anne’s attention, but I think she shouldn’t have reacted so strongly—especially when it’s not the first time she’s been called that. Even when he apologized, she didn’t care. And the “e”—I get that she prefers her name spelled that way, but that’s not her official name tho.

The teacher making her sit with a boy was definitely taking it too far. Anne’s cheerful and lively nature is what makes her lovable, but her bratty and overreactive side makes her unlikable as well.

Ok, I have seen enough this is my favourite anime of this season. Although the bar is quite low as the season is dry af for me. I'm glad atleast there is one series which I can look forward to every week. I don't care if it is fast pace compared to OG series and the books, this one is good in it's own way.

In this episode I especially like how caring Marilla is.

The OP and ED are here at long last, and I’m ngl they may be some of the bests of the season, the ED in particular was really beautiful with both the song and visuals, I love that hand drawn goodness.

I really liked the first bit of this episode, it started with Anne’s excitement for a picnic but that quickly took a nosedive when she was suspected of losing Marilla’s brooch. To me it seemed like Anne was telling the truth the first time, but Marilla was confident she was lying, and I can’t really blame her, it is a kid thing to do something bad and not tell the truth, but as it turns out Marilla was wrong and it wasn’t Anne after all. They kinda threw me off here with Anne’s overly dramatic story of how she lost it, but nah Anne is just a really good storyteller and fooled me for a minute lol, this also goes to show the adult isn’t always right, but I’m glad things are good between Anne and Marilla again, and that picnic afterward was as sweet as sweet can be, the ice cream reaction was especially cute.

And the school bit (what a beautiful location it’s in) went about as I expected it to, everything was so perfect on the first day and it was obvious that something would bring it all down, but even knowing it was coming, it was so fun to watch Anne blow up at Gilbert, bro didn’t realize he picked on her biggest insecurity, being her red hair, and paid the price lol. But he didn’t seem like a bad lad, he was genuinely sorry afterwards too, so I’m hoping to see them make up eventually, but first Anne needs to get through that classic phase of never wanting to go back to school lol.

The boys who spent their study break on having crickets race(?) are such a vibe lol

Anne's first impression of Gilbert couldn't've been any rougher but I really appreciate his immediate attempt to defend her for her outburst that he acknowledges he caused, not to mention Marilla admitting her own mistake earlier on too. Kinda sad we had to end on a bit of a downer note this time.

I know she's just a kid, but man, I just can't stand people who think the world revolve around them

So she was made fun of, but the guy was apologtic but did she even give him a chance? she didn't even want to listen just because she's so in her own way

The teacher somehow group her with the boys, and that was his fault for sure, but she wants to quit school because she think she was insulted? if that's her attitude about everything, then she won't last in this world very long, and her temper make her really unlikable

Wow. The OP is simply gorgeous. It might be my favorite OP of the season. Heck, this anime might become my favorite anime of the season too. Tho my only complaint was that it showed Anne aged up. I probably should've expected it considering the length of the series. But I still wish the OP didn't spoil it. Since Anne of Green Gables is pretty popular in Japan, I guess they expected people to already be familiar with it. The ED is great too.

I thought Anne would be a great novelist because of how much she yaps. But seems like she'd be a great theater performer too. She's so dramatic lol.

I was expecting a kind of Anya and Damian type of relationship from Anne and Gilbert. But Gilbert doesn't seem like such a bad guy. It's Anne who went too far. She really needs to learn to control her temper. Or it might sour all her relationships.

The next episode looks serious from the preview.

Anne Shirley OP is here finally and the visuals are so pretty. Thank you Yamada Naoko. Masterful job, as usual. Best episode yet for me, Anne is so damn dramatic but we love her for it 😭

Marilla NEEDS to get Anne in an acting troupe desperately because this girl can act her ass off lmao. That brooch “confession” was so good, she’s such a fool. She did the same thing when she fake apologised to the old lady the other day. You know how good an act you gotta put on for your parent/guardian to relent and just let you go to the picnic anyway lmao.

I love seeing Anne making friends around town and just having a normal childhood. The smile she had when Jean said her nose was pretty was so pure. She’s got so much insecurity about her appearance so that’s massive. She’s got a family, girlfriends.. now it’s time to introduce the missing piece, the love interest. Even having no familiarity with the series I instantly knew Gilbert was gonna be into Anne because of how she doesn’t care about romance or fawn over him lmao.

NOT ANNE BREAKING THE MINI CHALKBOARD OVER HIS HEAD AND GILBERT FALLING IN LOVE 😭 It was love at first abuse for him I guess lmaoo but cmon you do not insult a ginger’s hair, man. Anne’s so dramatic for wanting to quit school over that. I reckon Gilbert will probably come directly to the house to apologise and she’ll realise he ain’t so bad?

Noticing some signs of Anne being neurodivergent/having ADHD too 🤔 explains a lot of her behavior! Great ep, can’t wait for next one

Suddenly a lot of oujo-sama vibes. I understand that this is basically a remake of an old shoujo anime and that's how Japanese people view western traditional culture, it was still a bit unusual considering the setting. However, so far I like it. Even if Gilbert has a lot more bishonen vibes than I expected from him.

@VivaceRex This explains why the opening focuses more on Anne's adolescent moments with Diana than her budding romance with Gilbert. Classic Naoko Yamada, lmao.

@0451 Jokes aside, modern Damian turned out to be closer to the old "girls vs boys" mentality than Gilbert from the Victorian novel. I even wonder how authentic the characters of Anne and Gilbert were for the time, or if this was a completely created concept from scratch by Montgomery.

@FarCritical What do you want, it's a Victorian school from the time of Tom Sawyer, lol. With all the things like slates instead of notebooks or the shocking idea of sitting next to a classmate of the opposite sex. Although to be honest, I'm surprised that there are so many children in their provincial village, despite the fact that their homes are separated from each other by Texas ranches or Siberian camps.

So much happened this episode, I somewhat understand the complaints about the pacing of this adaptation.

It still feels tight and efficient, so the characters and moments are landing, but I do wish they let the story breathe a tiny bit... Maybe like 15% slower.

Oh I feel bad for Anne once again :( She had to lie about losing the amethyst collar so that she could go to the picnic with her friends, at least it got resolved when the amethyst collar was found so obviously Anne didn't lose it in the lake.

Also it started well for her at school making even more friends and proving her intelligence but that Gilbert guy mocked her and even though he didn't want to cause any harm it's frustrating for Anne especially now with the teacher punishing her for other things... she doesn't want to go to school anymore, which is obviously not an option for her, I hope things will be quickly resolved :(

@nanashi796 you understand that there are 7 or smth like this books on Anne Shirley, right, from her childhood to her being in her 50es? If anything even with this pace they probably wouldn't be able to adapt the full story, lol.

Finally, the Opening and the Ending!! I love the ED, it's so damn beautifully pictured!
In the opening, we already see that this adaptation will end in a more adult Anne. Maybe it's Anne of the Island (the 3rd book)...
Despite the fast pacing, I think they are adapting the key events of the first book - in this episode, for example, the issue of Marilla's brooch and Anne's fury at Gilbert in the school.
She won't forgive him so soon, but as the time goes by, Anne is going to control better her temper.

episode 5/5

I personally think the pacing is great. They are showing the main events and emphasizing each of Anne's actions. In this episode, we first had the problem with the brooch, which ended up being okay, and Anne's rage at school. For me, both were presented in a coherent way. I'm referring to the pacing, which is great even though some less important topics were cut from the original material.

The opening visuals were so beautiful and the music was perfect. I also liked the ending, the lines creating life together with the colors and the background music referred to something imaginary, and it was a pleasure to watch.

That said... this is really my favorite anime of this season, the animation is good, the story is simple but enjoyable to watch. It has good characters, the protagonist (Anne) always captivates me more and more, and the soundtrack is also great. Even the fact that the rhythm cuts things from the original, I like it, because they are only using the most important things to move the plot forward, I'm loving it. Best anime of the season easily for me.

After being absolutely floored by the ice cream on this week's Apothecary Diaries, I have to say I was quite disappointed by the ice cream here. We didn't really get to see the girls deeply enjoying it. I know that's a weird thing to comment on when they're doing everything else so spot-on identical to the books, but it still seems like a missed opportunity.

@alpo42ab Guess there's a reason why the story is still being adapted across the world for almost 120 years. The production quality helps to, show has everything going for it, and glad to see its doing the writing justice.

@Supercuecaaa The news that announce the adaption mentioned that they are adapting the pillars of the three novels:

- Anne's new family bond with Matthew and Marilla
- Anne's friendship with Diana
- Anne's romance with Gilbert

And the copyright line included "Anne of Green Gables" "Anne of Avonlea" and "Anne of the Island"

Marilla is so much softer in this series. In the original I didn’t like her until much later into the series. I can’t tell if they made her more likable or if I’m more willing to accept her strictness this time.

It was quite obvious that Anne was lying about her "confession" in order to be able to go to the picnic, so I'm glad they didn't stretch that segment any further. Her acting was spot-on lmao. I do wish she at least thought to offer to help Marilla search for her brooch though.

Ah, the classic "popular-guy-aka-love-interest-trying-to-get-the-attention-of-the-"odd"-girl-gone-wrong" trope. I'm impressed Gilbert didn't seem to feel much from getting smashed in the head with the mini chalkboard like that, although I suppose his shock of Anne's outburst negated that.

I feel bad for Anne and how unfairly the professor treats her, but her reactions are oftentimes very dramatic and over-the-top. Quite realistic for a girl her age, though, so I can't blame her much for that. Just hope she learns that there's some things she'll have to deal with since the world isn't full of sunshine and rainbows like in her dreams, but also that she'll still be true to herself.

@hitori_n Nope, it's not a spoiler. It doesn't really affect the story, other than possibly being an explanation for why they didn't already have kids. I think they very subtly alluded to the fact that they're siblings in one of the first two episodes, but I doubt I would've intuited anything if I hadn't already read the books. I don't recall if this fact was hidden for so long in the book or not

@Fenlix more dialogues, more landscapes and anne imagination, skipped stuff, slower pacing, for example all ep 3 of the old anime was adapted in 2 minutes in the new one, old anime adapt only the first book in 50 ep, new anime will adapt 2-3 books in 24 episodes.

@Xiao Anne escapes to her dreamworld, because she already knows world is not sunshine and rainbows. Better than anyone. Her lifestory was toned down. She told Marilla how it looked for her and she tried with all her might to not paint her abusive caretakers in a bad light. She was thinking she is wicked for seeing people as evil and abusive even it that was true. No1 ever cared for her, she was working harder than many adults even in her Tictorian era, was living with very aggresive alcoholic. She didn't have education in the Winter since it was to hard to get to her school at Hammond's place and she didn't get any in Thomas'es place either. No1 catered to her needs and she was manipulated to thin kthat as long as she has roof over her head, she should be grateful and that she was practicaly born evil. Kid was traumaties so much that despite her avoiding being open about it, Marilla read through the lines how she suffered and how easly she was abondoned before - at first by Thomase'es who were family of a woman that cleaned Anne's parents house and later Hammonds who took Anne in order to make her their personal little slave taking care of 6 children at once. She was in asylum in Hopetown with very pathological upbringing. And everyone made fun at her when her dreams were the only thing that let her survive. Anne is temperamental, but she is mostly traumatised and afraid that when someone will see her bad traits (hair! there was real racism towards people with IRshi roots, like redheads). Anne was thinking at first that if she was pretty, she would be wanted and adopted already by Cuthberts - because adults were very open about how ugly she if before Rachel. she will be left alone once again or if she does not perform well. So even if she had less help and less education she pushed herself even more to be the best in class. She was naturally curious, but still she wants to proove she is not a burden. IT's hard to live like that. She had only made up friends and often made up meals and warmth...so please, take it into a count when you look at her.

The real test is always the portrayal of Gilbert, the girls fangirling and parting the road for him was a bit much though lol. My favorite portrayal of Gilbert is still probably in Anne with an E (TV adaptation of the book).

This series feels a little rushed, lots of cut dialogue unfortunately, and imo Ann's portrayal is almost too wholesome/pretty in this adaptation (shoujo-fied). The characters don't really feel that distinct. I'm looking forward to the later episodes when she's a bit older and we get to explore her in later teenager years. Buuuut despite my gripes with the pacing, I'm happy this is getting a new audience. Honestly still a classic :)

words ... fail to describe ... how much respect and admiration i hold for Mathew .. this man is an example for a kind heart, responsible, friendly, supportive father ..
i see him as my person brother.. he's simply likable!

also .. Gilbet .. earned THE MOST FAMOUS SCENE IN THE ENTIRE STORY!
Anne the girl who hates her hair color, goes 0 to ???? and unleashes her frenzy!
Anne went berserk with Rachel previously, but she never went physical.. with Gilbert .. he HAD to touch the forbidden line!

in the live action show "the girls bullied her for thinking Gilbert took an interest in her, and tried to offer her and apple, thus Diana adviced her to ignore him"
in this anime she's literally day dreaming, and he's a bully ..
............also the "teacher" missed her name ... it's not Ann .. it's ANNE with an E!

in the live action show Anne is shown being ridiculed and laughed upon by the rest of the girls .. the show takes a step by step approach to her psyche breaking down and finally she runs away .. Diana is the only one to witness her "strange" behavior.
in this anime when she runs ... it's more like she's FED UP with the bullying and wishes to defend herself somehow

okay............... okay ................ PHILIP!!!!!!!! YOU CROSSED THE FUCKING LINE!!!!!!!!!!! MAKING ANNE SIT DOWN LITERALLY AMONG THE BOYS AS A PUNISHMENT IS NOT ONLY IMMORAL, CHILDISH, STUPID, INSULTING.. BUT FOR A GIRL THAT'S 11 ........... FUCKING LUNATIC! she's already having a bad time and now make her "sit down" as a clown!
oh dear .... you didn't .... YOU DID NOT!
Anne is a kid , she's still new! and they are already bullying her! SHE WAS AN ORPHAN WITHOUT ANY PARENTS, SHE HAD TO DEFEND HERSELF, AND NOW SHE'S IN ANOTHER HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT AS WELL .... WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING?!

in the live action show .. during her school day Gilbert shows her EXTRA attention and it's "foreshadowed" they both are in love from the 1st sight, the other girls actively attack her for it, and also they insult the way she speaks, they can't accept her "fantasy talk" therefore .. when the BASTARD called "teacher" brings her in front of the board.. all the girls start bullying her even more .. she's mentally overloaded .. and she just RUNS OUT TO HOME CRYING she doesn't even take with her the books or anything else .. the live action scene made it very much more emotional, depressing, melancholic and realistic ..

the anime shows her as an "angry girl ..... in her (rebellion phase) .. she's NOT even a teenager .. i doubt she even started her menstruation... "
also the "things" they spoke about , about the teacher ... even in the older version .. he's shown favoring a very specific girl like a predator ...
this version although more modern .. is too quickly rushing everything ... i'll go watch the original until it reaches the remake's 3rd episode .. see how long it'll take ..

also .. Anne is by no means a tsunWHOREdere ..
Anne is not a delinquent either .. she's not a tomboy nor an airhead .. i think the only personality to describe her .. would be .. a typical normal girl

3 episodes and we are already at the "juice" incident ... this show is SPEED RUNNING the older one..

side note: in japanese anything you add "DAI" to means "utmost top!" when Anne says "DAI KIRAI" it's the english equal to "I HATE YOU SO MUCH, I WON'T MIND KILLING YOU AND DINING ON YOUR CORPSE!" "DAI" is the top!
just like when you hear the difference between
"suki" , "dai suki", and "aishteru"
i like you, i REALLY LIKE YOU, I ADORE YOU AND WE MUST BECOME LOVERS!

edit: according to nanashi796: the 3 episodes covered 14 from the original show ..
and i'm the one who was confused is Marilla having an identity crisis??
since i do recall myself cultivating HATRED , CONTEMPT, SPITE, AND LOATHING to her so hard .. i wanted to kill her with my own hands!
Marilla was the embodiment of "enemy" to Anne .. Marilla was simply designed UNLIKABLE .. you wanted to skin her alive!
i'll take "the current Marilla" as an alternative reality version ...
