Wow. They got the horror aspect done perfectly. The 2D rotoscoping I think helped it reach a more realistic feeling, which lots of horror anime fail. The black and white manga styled animation here I believe was the key to what made everything creepier. In horror I think the less information given is typically better. One piece of information that people typically overlook is color. More heavily saturated colors will typically be less scary. So the grayscale look of the anime helped sell the horror a lot more than the majority of other anime. My biggest gripe was similar to a lot of other people. The pacing. Overall I think it still works but tbh if they had slowed it down a bit I think it could’ve been even better. Overall an 8/10 tho

As a person who read the manga and watched every Junji Ito anime adaptations. I have to say that this might be the only CGI anime where CG is improoving the atmosphere of it. I will agree that this episode was kind off rushed and the impact of the scenes was a lot smaller then I expected altough I am interested in how the stories that are now connected are going to play out especially that the episodes are going to be much longer going on(at least from what I've seen)
@Toffensky No cgi used here yall. Completely 2D. It used the movement of actors as the base for the animation which is why it feels uncanny(ofc this is purposeful tho)

It was awesome and I'm eager for more! It was a safe and also a different choice to go black & white, but while it could also just be a copy of the manga if animation isn't done right, they chose to use a lot of rotoscoping, making some key scenes to feel uncanny and weird and that's actually good, it's a horror story after all. Way better than what Deen did and it's not because of the colors alone.

I was distracted by how hot shuichi was the entire episode.

Anyway, very enjoyable, animation is absolutely bonechilling and masterfully done

For my liking the pacing is too fast. I prefer a slow build up and mystery events taking place like a usual horro movie. 10 minutes into the episode so much happened already. I also didnt get to know anything about the characters thats why it feels a little empty to me. Instead of a horror/mystery show its more like a splatter lol.

But it was still interessting and gripping. I am looking forward for more. Its on the other hand always nice if someone takes a different route and does it different than the others. I can see with the artstyle and pacing thats what the authors are trying to do. Be different and special. And it can pay off big time in the end for sure. At least thats what I think.

That was... mid? Pacing is broken, nothing interesting really happens, plot is not coherent, and even as an "avantgarde" work it clearly underdelivers on the atmosphere and artistry

I have moderate expectations for this. Unfortunately most of this episode I saw prior in trailers so lost some shock factor with that but raises some questions.
Why didn't she leave, WHY DOESN'T HE LEAVE?!
Before this episode released, I read some reviews of the manga and looks like will continue to be good for a bit, then drop off. However, time will tell.
4/5, the quality is pretty nice with my favorite part probably being Kirie's alternating blinking hahaha. It is definitely horrific, but wonder if I can spiral into it.

Well that was what I hoped it would be for the most part. I have a little quibble with how some people move like they're riding skateboards but the rest of it was nice and creepy. Can't wait for next week

Watched this at midnight and I have to say, I'm kind of disappointed with the way this was paced. while the realistic animation and rotoscoping was good to look at, it was rushed to oblivion. Everything just happened without any build-up or fear. I'm just sitting there, like 'Oh, that happened okay.' It's just a bunch of scenes mashed together without any structure. Azami's reveal of what's under the hat is accompanied by complete silence with no audio cue like what. I don't feel the same uneasiness as I do when I read the manga. Sad, I was excited for a true Junji Ito adaptation, but it is what it is. I am going to watch the rest to see how it goes. 7/10
@Park_Pierce so true. Main problem of this animation right now is pacing. Giving it only 4 episodes was probably a bad idea considering the amount of story that was available.

Good, but not outstanding. From a visual standpoint: absolutely insane. From a storytelling standpoint: this is just a rushed showcase of manga panels. Some moments hit here and there, but cramming in so much content in 20 minutes doesn't work to build an actually eerie atmosphere. For me, this is just an opportunity to see some beautiful manga panel being animated. Looks gorgeous, I'll enjoy it, but it doesn't build the proper ambience.

Regarding the pacing: I think it makes sense, everything is spiraling out of control, no stopping here, it's basically a descent into maelstrom. :3

Solid 9/10 episode. They perfectly captured the manga’s art style and the Hereditary type discordant music adds to the horror.

The animation is great, now the pace was terrible, everything was very rushed, but it still managed to convey the "horror" vibe that the manga offers, personally I'm not a fan of the manga, but the anime's animation style is great.

Despite everything, I confess that I felt more "fear" in the anime than in the manga, perhaps because there were many things happening at the same time, which transmitted a chaotic/tense vibe to the anime.

The soundtrack perfectly suited Uzumaki, It couldn't be better than this. I just hope they slow down the pace over the next few episodes.

Spirals too spooky for me.

Honestly felt rather cringey, these types of shows don't really resonate with me.

The chick seems slow-witted as fuck.

At least is wasn't too dreadfulfy boring nor bad to watch.

kinda odd they speedran through some story
@RawrOfTheEmo I agree, but they kinda have to because of the fact that its only gonna be four episodes. I wish that it would be like 12 or something, but you take what you can get, yk? Either way, speedrunning aside, I think this episode was a very great start.

I really like the intro music. The art is extremely well done, but still really weird. The music really enhanced the feelings of visceral cringing and just really well done.

The way they walked was offputting, especially the guy's stance.

What the hell did I just watch? This took avant grande to a whole new level tbh.

The animation is amazing, well the whole aesthetic is, the black and white palette fits the adaptation very well. I also love the choice of the voice actors, with a very small exception for Kirie, who I think should have a bit deeper voice but that’s just my personal opinion. What I’m bit confused about is the pacing, feels weird to just speedrun some parts of the original story …

To be honest the first episode was not that horrendous, i was about too bust a laugh about how stupid his father looked with that spiral tongue , i feel like this shown is going to work better as a whole instead of just 1 episode each, what makes me wonder why they just did not launched a full movie, instead of just 4 episodes

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR HALF A DECADE NOW THAT'S CRAZYYYYY AND PERSONALLY WORTH IT

as someone who never really ever gets scared nor creeped out, this one definitely did the job. i watched this while eating too, and i was eating okra, so the sliminess 100% added on the whole experience T_T

so far so good though. fingers crossed that it won't disappoint me somewhere along the way, cuz how much can you mess up a 4 episode anime that took 5 years to make? right?

Sad that they had to cut content from manga to fit it in 4 episodes. They tried to make it work by mixing it up, which worked to some extent, but the build up wasn't there as much as I would have liked. The main point of horror is to slowly build pressure, sadly they failed in compression to manga.

Still the episode was entertaining, scary and there was some pressure still in it.

7.5 out of 10 in my opinion.

The art, animation and direction gives it bonus points.

I just felt like the pacing wasn’t great, and it really dampened the impact of the story for me. The animation was great and it felt 3d in a rotoscoping way that I liked because it felt creepier but the pacing was so poor that I don’t think I’ll watch the rest. I’m probably gonna read the manga again if I want to re experience Uzumaki instead of finishing this

Junji Ito. The man needs no introduction. What also needs no introduction is that when it comes to adaption of his works, they're not the most faithful to the original source. And there's a reason for that. Simply being, his work's aren't something that are easily translatable into anime. Hell, this work itself already had an iffy enough live action movie.

Many years later though, after constant delays and the such, here we are.

Right off the bat, you can clearly tell this ain't your average anime. From the black and white aesthetic, to Hiroshi Nagahama's INFAMOUS rotoscoping. You may know him as the one who brought you the infamous Aku no Hana, and holy hell did he improve his game in the time frame from that to now.

Visuals aside, it's clear that this ain't your average anime even besides the visuals. Main dude's dad is obsessed with these "Uzumaki's". Not to be confused with Naruto Uzumaki or anything lol, but the literal translation of it, a spiral. And he's more than just obsessed, I mean this dude just embracing it. Dude legit just turned his tongue into a Uzumaki itself LOL.

Then we got miss crescent moon on her forehead, who is just bugging out because main dude was the first to ever reject him ever since she got it. As if it wasn't weird enough with that whole ordeal, we go to the funeral of main dude's dad, to which we get the backstory leading to his death, and yeah, it's a Junji Ito manga all right. Only he would be able to think of WHATEVER THE HELL THIS IS

And from there it just gets even creepier and eerier. It's clear that this "Uzumaki" is just the second coming of the devil or some shit, because people in this anime just want to throw everything away at the sight of one apparently. Though, some do make sense why they would freak out, like whatever the hell was going on with Kirei's face.... AND IT WAS WORSE THAN JUST A SIMPLE UZUMAKI, THE SHIT JUST SUCKED EVRYTHING INCLUDING HER OWN BODY IN??? HUH?????

So many questions, so many.. I don't even know what I just watched. But I'm hooked. BRING ON MORE.
@IzanaSolos uh haven't you read the manga? if you havent i highly recommend and it's better than the anime
