Takani Megumi makes an appearance and she's not shy to keep her hands off of Kenshin. They found a mature voice for her character too.

Sakura's reaction this episode was comedy gold. I can see the jealous look on her face LOL. On a more serious note, Takani has a target on her back and there are people looking to capture her.

There is never a dull moment in the lives of these people, I mean just the last episode Kenshin and co. were dealing with bozos like Jine, and now that there was some time to free and ease up… through gambling, they were forcefully denied that little fun time too smh.

Megumi made an appearance and so does the presence of opium, a drug we all are awfully familiar with. Though it was the trouble she brought herself with which may not have resulted into a big mess now, but rest assured it would… and I’m not talking about those abnormal looking people who were chasing her, but the kind of intentional misunderstanding which played its part when the trio of Kenshin, Sanosuke and Megumi met Kaoru lol.

Classic violent tsundere-ness aside, it didn’t take long to meet the entire cast of characters we’ll see in this particular arc… the whole of Oniwabanshu and the man who hired them, Kanryu. A brief about them and their leader, Aoshi, and hey it already seems like he’s aware of Kenshin’s presence.

One from the gang is already here to draw the first blood against Kenshin and people.

Well, the series is a very loyal adaptation of the manga and all the verbosity of the source material is kept as-is. The older version had a break-neck pace at this point (which is the approach taken in the Kyoto-arc as well). While the approach here is just fine, it's also kinda not note-worthy.
I didn't compare the two versions deeply, but the gambling at the beginning of the story arc was much better handled in the 90s version. The background design there was much more rugged, giving the feeling of a clandestine gambling setting, while this new version goes for the usual bright setting... Also, the content itself was much more interesting in the 90s version, where Kenshin misleads Sano into losing a bet, resulting in a comical moment

Kill until death claims you huh a grim fate. Nice to finally meet Megumi and Saori Oonishi gracing us with her portrayal. Kaoru's reaction at seeing Megumi was priceless. Nice to finally meet Aoshi and his men as well. So the Oniwaban were ninja's specialized in combat skills how curious. If anything this arc would be one that would feature the first of Kenshin's rogue gallery.

Kenshin might be overwhelmingly powerful in battle, yet his kindness stands out as his major vulnerability. There are numerous warning signs regarding the suspicious Megumi, and her recent monologue solidifies these concerns. It's no surprise that they're attempting to keep Yahiko and Kaoru out of the loop to safeguard them, but suppressing the young one is proving difficult. Particularly, Kaoru emerges as a strong advocate for transparency and harbors deep feelings for Kenshin. She's both anxious he might depart and secretly relishes the idea of Kenshin's devotion.

The newly appointed group leader appears to possess keen insight into Kenshin's strengths, potentially creating a truly formidable adversary. I'm intrigued to learn more about this Shinobi gang led by him.

I can't wait for Kenshin's fight with Aoshi and the Gatling gun scene too 🤩🤩🤩 This series really is doing the Manga justice, it's a very faithful adaptation of a body of work that really should be more appreciated in this community, Kenshin is truly one of the Greats!

The medicine lady Megumi has finally appeared which means the Oniwaban arc is underway as she is currently on the run from Kanryu. It didn't take long for Megumi to start teasing Karou when they first met with Megumi being the older woman with experience. We are also introduced to the Oniwaban group themselves as rouge ninjas from the Edo period lead by Aoshi. Kenshin and Sano already ran into one of the members of the Oniwaban group who fires dangerous projectiles from his fingertips. Now they have to deal with the big guy that crashed through Karou's dojo.

Things are about to heat up(no pun intended) from the this point forward.

Whew another awesome episode. Start of a new arc and this one is going to present some unique challenges. Jine pushed Kenshin’s combat skills, but now he’s going to find his people skills being called into question. No good deed goes unpunished as they say and helping Megumi isn’t going to be as simple as it seems.

Kenshin and the gang are outnumbered and going up against someone with a lot of money, enough to have his own private army. This is tough. Not to mention the opium that’s flooding the streets and ruining peoples lives. This gave me a little nostalgia for Revenger from earlier in the year which touched on drug abuse during a similar era.

It’s kinda sad seeing how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Drug abuse was a big issue back then and it continues to be a plague on society.

Liked the introduction of megumi who while seemingly playing both sides, seems like she’s really a good person at heart. Love how jealous Kaoru got because of Megumi and Kenshin’s interactions 😂 she’s entering her overbearing and insecure stage which is always cute to see.

An army of shinobi vs one rurouni, who wins? Can’t wait to see how things play out in this new take on the classic arc.

Right after the previous arc ended we’re already in another one, and it already seems like it’s gonna be wild. After doing a little friendly gambling and getting into a tussle with a guy that has a literal “hand” gun, we find out we’re dealing with Kanryu who is not to be messed with, he apparently has a private army and even the Oniwaban Group who are basically amazing ninjas, so this is definitely a bit more to chew than Jine so far lol.

I was also expecting that big guy in the jacket to be Kanryu but it’s apparently the sharp business man with glasses, that does make sense but like Kenshin said I’m wondering why the Oniwaban are working for him. And it’s kinda upsetting Megumi is already planning to bail if things get bad, I get it but it just makes me feel not as bad for her, as well as the fact she won’t talk about where she got the opium. And lastly, Kaoru had quite a bit of great moments this episode, love when she imagined Kenshin as a pet and got flustered, as well as when she was trying to listen in on Kenshin and Megumi lol.

Is it really uchida yuuma voicing Aoishi? It sounds so very different from all his other roles. Voice actors do remarkable job of changing the tone, like yashiro taku and sugita tomokazu here doesn’t sound like usual either. But this one confused me a lot.

We are now entering the first major story arc of the show. We've had a couple two part stories like Sanosuke introduction and the incident with Jine but now we've got a major plot line. Megumi stumbling into Kenshin life almost literally, on the run from the private army of a businessman named Kanryu. One whom isn't so clean as he deals in the opium trade, using the horrible drug to gain massive wealth in a short timeframe. Kenshin. and Sanosuke not hesitating to help Megumi since she's in need and the people after her hurt Sanosuke friends. This Kanryu guy employing not only a private army but some really awful dudes whom used to be basically personal assassins for the old shogun. These guys are bad news and some that even Kenshin should be worried about. Bringing back Megumi to keep her safe was a good idea, it lead to some really funny scenes with Kaoru getting jealous. Kenshin mapping out the whole organization that Kanryu has under him is smart since it gives them idea of the force they're about to go up against. We've seen how ruthless Kanryu can be even towards his own men, and apparently Megumi is his so called golden goose so getting her to safety will not be easy. Especially with these assassins running right up on Kenshin and crew.

This ia definitely the deepest voice Yuuma has done for a character. It surprised me hearing him in the trailers and now the show too

This is definitely the deepest I've heard him yet, and I wouldn't have identified him on my own. But after hearing him in "Pop Team Epic", I'm somehow not surprised - the dude has insane range.

Finally it's here, one of my favorite mini-arcs of all time. Before rurouni Kenshin became a shounen classic with Kyoto arc, this is what I used to talk about most of the time to convince people into watching this anime.

As for the quality of the episodes, well, despite the downside, it's getting exciting, like it was back in the day.

After last week's phenomenal episode that ended that arc, we get a new arc with the Opium Lord and a Beauty who is definitely using Kenshin.

  • Megumi runs into them then does the whole "taskete" save me thing
  • Sanosuke lets his fists do the talking, BAM, PUNCH.
  • Of course Kenshin does the epic Tatami Mat flip
  • The 2 idiot men bring Megumi to Kaoru's dojo! Are they morons or don't they realize (1) this will bring trouble on Kaoru (who is poor now) and (2) involve the kid?? (3) Kaoru will be jealous. ISTG these guys are too dense to be alive. Too much martial arts training = tough body, zero social skills.
  • Not surpringly, Kaoru is unimpressed and jealous.
  • Megumi pours oil on the fire. I hate her. She better do something else that is good, cuz she's coming across as a user.
  • Sanosuke just wants revenge on hks buddy who died of an opium overdose. Honestly, everyone has issues, some end up falling prey to using drugs to escape, and his friend took the permanent escape. Ah Opiods, still killing people who should know better. To be fair, some don't care.
  • The Drug Lord and his henchmen are well drawn, they seem like serious villains, not the cartoon lousy ones. These guys exude Danger with a capital D!
  • Oniwabanshu = Ninja! And there's a FAT one!

Next episode, Smokebombs??

I like how they touch gambling, women as a reward, and then drugs. It's been moving forward quite good after the death of Jine. Now Kenshin must face against the entrepreneur who ran a good luck with the drugs and even had ninjas as his bodyguard. Yahiko declared Kenshin-gumi as a thing, and the first wave of the attacks happens after. Poor innocent Kaoru dojo become once again a place for the fierce battle over Kenshin and people whose prevent his peace...

Kaoru's head sometimes...
A beauty on the run, alright. The Kenshin-gumimain cast is complete with the smart Takani Megumi here. Kanryu needs her back or her "skill". With opium taking the life of Sano's friend, it's personal. The excuse Sano came up with for how Megumi came to join them was probably worse than if they had mentioned opium.

Aoshi is also introduced, can't wait to see him up against Kenshin.
