Indeed. VE The Movie is the epilogue of the entire story, and should remain the last thing released of the franchise.

It's some "re-issue" of the 13-episode series. As long as it is another material I'm just fine.

Well, KyoAni still has to cope with everything that happened. What i am curious about is how the studio is still up and running and how they managed to pay their employees all this time. They didn't have major releases for years, aside for one season of Kobayashi. This doesnt seem to be the first 'recompilation' of past series they do lately. I know that the studio head decided to give the funds gathered after the arson to the victims and families. This is a good thing. But i bet they still need to make some money for the company right now, in order to produce future projects.

Me too! 😅 I was hoping for a continuation of the series/Finale. I would settle for any slice of life anime based on this series.

They had a Free movie and they're about to have the second season of Tsurune and a Tsurune movie as well.

Really disappointed by this being a recap, since the name sounded like a post-epilogue and it's movie-length at 1.5 hours.

This should've been released when they released the blu-ray nearly a year after the cinematic release. At least it'll be on Netflix directly on 15 December. If it's rated very highly I might watch this if I ever rewatch Violet, but I feel like it most episodes were so beautiful I wouldn't want to cut any content on rewatch.

It's just a "condensed recap" of the first season!
Instead of watching 5h 14m, you can get it abridged in 1h 35m...
Netflix is running low on money and want to milk the viewers anyway they can! Disgusting!!!

They're taking episodes that felt super rushed to make me feel any real, genuine emotion out of them, and somehow making them even more condensed, rushed and phonier for this recap format. Great....

most anime studios don't JUST do 'main production projects'. for example, JC Staff has one of the most famous background drawing and building creation teams in anime for over 20 years. they have been outsourcing that team for decades. just check out the end credits of any anime and you'll see the names of other studios in supporting roles. i wouldn't be surprised if KyoAni has also been doing support work on other projects alongside their 'main production projects'.

I know many people weren't particularly happy with how the segments in the main TV series felt rushed and not genuine with the emotions, but at least they breathed more efffectively than compared to what we'll get here. Tbh, releasing it in this format would deprive most of, if not all, of the emotional buildup that series has its main strengths, regardless of whether or not certain people (some I know too well, who aren't very sold on the evocative aspects of the series to begin with).
Not sure why release a compilation now after the main story has entirely concluded unless they starting another season or maybe a spinoff of sorts. Idk for sure, I'm mixed, and at this point I'd rather rewatch the full TV series if anything unless they include exclusive scenes or soundtracks here.

KyoAni is pretty unic in many ways. They are completely different from any other studio. Here are a few reasons why:

1) They have their own animation school. As opposed to every other studio, they took the crisis of the lack of animators in their own hands. They have a team and a studio, and they don't hire freelancers, because they don't need to.
2) Most of their employees are women. The founder was a woman, too. Why does it matter you ask? Because KyoAni may be the only company in Japan that decided to do what was necessary to allow women to work, using the same means we use here. Other companies in Japan generally force women to chose: "Kids or job?". KyoAni built its very own day nursery.
3) KyoAni hardly follows the same business model as other studios. They are more akin to old Ghibli when they were working with Myazaki. Meaning: they look for jobs and contracts themselves. They create their own projects. They won't take a contract for making the 17th random LN adaptation of the season.
4) Here, it may be my own ignorance and i may have missed some occurences... But I have been checking anime credits for almost 2 decades now. KyoAni hardly outsources. They don't need to. They didn't at least. Because 1). And they don't do outsourcing jobs for other studios because 3). It doesn't take the same work ethics to make Violet Evergarden and to make your random Fate anime.

They are successful because they make quality. They are not involved in random projects. If they were to do outsourcing as a rule at some point, it would probably mean that KyoAni died.

I don't think this'll add anything to the story. This is kind of typical of KyoAni, they just make a 1000 recap and side stories in hopes of making more I guess.

"Pour Mémoire" means "For memory" in French , so it was already a red flag , to be honest.
But yes , they could have adapted the side-stories instead...

interesting viewpoints, thanks for the input.

but you do seem to have several mis-conceptions about how 'all' studios work in the industry. as a 30+ year anime fan, props to your 20 years! :D i've dug pretty deep into the industry and nigh-on EVERYBODY in every studio does supporting work. it is one of those 'evil necessities' to pay the bills and also support your fellow 'creatives'.

just because a project is "random Fate anime." or "the 17th random LN adaptation of the season." doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered honest work or worth somebody's time. if KyoAni ISN'T doing support work, i frankly think that's quite silly and not a good business model. the old saying comes to mind, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket." if KyoAni is relying on just their main project income... that is a pretty narrow revenue stream. if they are a smaller studio (by number of employees) that 'risk' of one main project not providing enough profit and there is no further revenue from 'secondary projects', seems too high to me.

but, if their management has everything well balanced? i can see why concentrating the entire staffs' efforts on that one main project could produce epic results.

Unfortunately, i can't answer these questions. All i could say at this point would rely on wild guesses. What is more, i don't watch animes a lot anymore at this point. Even nostalgia can't do the trick anymore. I tried to rewatch Captain Tsubasa 30 years after i first discovered it, but it was beyond what i could handle ^^. So i didn't exactly follow KyoAni's destiny since 2019. The information i posted above is the fruit of my personal research before this whole tragedy happened. I don't know what a good business model is, but as far as i can tell, well known studios that died since, like Disney, concentrated on their job first and foremost. I would dare to say that this is the reason why they made the best animation ever in 1937, which was called "Snow White" (i am still a fan of this one. Took years to make. A shame to see what the studio became these past 30 years). Video game studios are the same: they do have to rely on each game being successful to an extent to survive, especially indie ones. As i said, maybe it is my own ignorance, but i haven't seen, in the credits, KyoAni outsourcing. And Fate or LN adaptations being honest work or not is not the question. The matter at hand is that making a Fate anime and a Violet Evergarden doesn't ask for the same work ethics: if i had to take the Disney comparison again, i would say that one asks for a "Snow White" type of prerequisite while the other asks for a "Home on the Range" level of commitment (meaning, low level). I am not saying that a KyoAni artists can't do both. I am saying that juggling with 2 very different ways to do things does no guarantee efficiency in both.

PS: looked at your profile page. Looks like we are the same generation (you are slightly older), but not the same place at all. This explain why your post was above what i expected from this website :D. Glad to see this.

Everyone should know this recap actually came out two years ago in Japan right before the movie so it could build hype for it and let people catch up quickly on the TV series story. It's the Western release that is really freaking late to the game.

This recap was actually how Hideo Kojima found out about Violet Evergarden, it caused the hashtag to start trending on Twitter, he noticed it, and then he binged the whole 13 episodes.

Keep in mind Kyoto Animations Merch initiative "Violets Journey" is currently ongoing too. Might be playing a part in this too.
With the movie telling us the end of her story already, the most we can hope for really, is OVA's in the future, adapting the stories of Lux, Silena & Misha etc. in a similar fashion to what they did with Irma in a slightly longer OVA Episode Format or if they choose to expand upon the remaining LN content, a longer movie format version like they did with Amy and Taylor. I do not know if thats gonna happen though, as they might classify this the same way a second season is, aka. "Her story is over, nothing more to see, dont get your hopes up"

Just over one year ago actually. And it was a cut specifically made to fit the the timeslot of the NTV Friday Roadshow (a big deal with a lot of "normie" viewers). They made a cut down version of Violet Evergarden the Movie for the same program slot just a few weeks ago. These only require reediting material from already produced anime, and they reach a wide audience who would not otherwise watch late-night anime like this, so I would hardly say they are a waste of resources for the studio.

This is a compilation of episodes 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, and 10. You can find out more here: https://teck78.blogspot.com/2021/09/special-cut-of-violet-evergarden-tv.html
