THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Yeah, I feel like this season's finale is setting up for the second cour this Fall. We got more koto practicing and developing feelings.

There's a lot passion poured into the koto playing this episode. Felt like the characters were very into the art and continously trying to improve themselves. I'm actually excited to see how far they can go with this club now.

Edit: It seems like the OP for final ep. is different?

So the performance went well for the most part tho there was a bit of a dip in the halfway part.
Judging at @Tsubasalovers comment tho we are going to have to wait for a while in order to hear the results.
So far tho this anime has been pretty good and in my opinion the best of the season, that being said i didn't watch much this season.

Ah, this show was very good as expected (if we don't give too much weightage to the art and animation part). Definitely my favourite show of the season. Show my boi Chika some love world, please.

Though their nerves may have been shot by the performances that they have seen so far its nice that they are still hanging on. Takezou's attempt to snap Hiro out of her gloom was admirable. Overall the teams performance was impressive even with the hiccups in the first half. The second half performance sure managed to allow them to strike back at the audience with their dazzling performance. Overall a solid finale that managed to end the first season on a high note via the teams dazzling but tension filled performance.

KOTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I love, love, LOVE that it was him who turned it around for everyone, he's so genuine and earnest and just a sweetheart. FUCK YES!

Absolutely brilliant, the koto performances and the character relationships/development together make for an incredible experience which have my legs shaking just like in episode 5.

This will be a long wait until fall.

Beautiful performance! It ended in a really weird way, but I guess that was to be expected since the production wasn't the best... It's impressive how the story can carry the anime so much! The manga must be a masterpiece. Cried with the performance. Now we wait for October~

If the performance is world-shattering they can have a whiplash/blackswan ending at this episode. But this is far from tour de force so we'll have another cour to compensate that.

Fuee, I always knew this was gonna be a split cour and we'll get the rest of the story in Fall but damn, talk about the most unsatisfying way to end the first half when there's gonna be such a long wait till the rest.

Such a good episode regardless though. Its so easy to love the main characters in this show, I love watching them support one another. I loved their performance, faults and all. It had so much passion and character to it. 8/10 for this half. Its gonna be tough resisting reading the manga with such a long wait but I know it'll be worth it when the season arrives.

Also, I'm blessed that both this and Chihayafuru will return in Fall. I've always considered them to be somewhat similar and having new seasons of them airing at the same time will be heaven for me.

Great finale episode to sign things off with for now!

Chika sustained quite the bruise and that wall slam further worsened the condition, pretty sure the advisor didn’t want things to go this way but things happen I suppose. A lot of internal conflict inside the advisor this episode and looks like he’s finally coming to understand his sister’s words. Seems like we’ll soon be seeing the genius in him playing a role in elevating this group to further heights, the way things are progressing. But that aside, the buildup to the match was pretty well handled and the payoff exemplary. Chika’s priceless smile before the performance was really nice to see too and perfect words there to boot Hozuki! Too bad though that the momentum was momentarily snapped due to Chika’s inability to cope up. And the minutes to follow after that with Kota stepping up to guide the others and then seeing them rescue each other like that, beautiful stuff!

I’ll award this show a very well-deserved 8/10! All the Departments were good-to-great except for the animation quality which was just about par for the most bit and I honestly didn’t find the Op to be very fitting either.

It’s going to be tough, this waiting session until Fall, but here’s to hoping we get to see more of this greatness!

Oh, this ending was so abrupt for the last episode but I guess with season 2 coming soon it's alright.

I am intrigued about the teacher's storyline more than the results though. I don't expect them to win or anything, they performed good, managed to overcome the mistake and no matter what the result is I'm certain they'd be motivated to move forward and keep doing their best. However, the teacher is quite an interesting character and I wonder how his newfound inspiration will affect the group's dynamics or what will come of it for his own musical career.

Overall, I liked this anime, it was interesting to learn about koto, a nice set of characters and their development throughout all this, quite emotional too.

And it ends. An awful, overrated show with some of the worst writing and directing this season, and some of the worst, most clichéd melodrama I've ever seen. Seems like I'm in the absolute minority with this, but I'm so glad this is over.

I couldn't believe there wasn't a single comment in last week's discussion about how just incredibly stupid and contrived the drama was with Chika getting his hand injured while dive-rescuing Hozuki from a falling koto that was oh so terribly positioned. The whole scene was so unbelievably awkward and forced it was unintentionally hilarious. And in this episode, despite realising the situation and following them for awhile now--how quickly their "supervisor" changes his mind to "oh they're not succeeding their hopeless and I knew I shouldn't have gotten involved" just for the sake of empowering the 180 they do 1 minute later...

And don't get me started on all the awful, wasteful directing... This show will show us something important happen with our characters, and then it will ALWAYS show us the exact same scene not 30 seconds later in a flashback when the characters are by themselves reflecting. As if we couldn't have guessed what was troubling them... This director doesn't know how to use subtlety or time well at all. Or manage the pacing for that matter--this whole season has felt as if we're just getting a carbon copy of the manga, with no changes made at all to better fit the new medium, just panel to panel to panel. Everything has felt so weirdly paced and weak. Though maybe all this shouldn't be surprising--for whatever reason it seems a guy with absolutely zero prior experience was hired to direct this... And it really shows.

Oh! And how the writer always lumps those 3 other "extra" characters in the group into one homogeneous "character" all the time to avoid actually having to give them any meaningful depth, character development or unique personality of their own (I don't need to name the 3 because you know exactly who I'm talking about). It annoys me to no end, it's so cheap. Whenever another reaction is needed outside of the main four, they will just about always react together as a single unit. And when they don't--there's not really any noticeable difference between them other than their voices and design. I can barely recall or tell apart their personalities now. How would you describe each of their personalities? It's impossible. They haven't got any. Oh, right, the blonde kid is a bit more timid than the rest...

I could easily go for hours about how stupid everything in this show was, but I won't... I'd have to revisit it and I really don't want to do that. For me this show's only saving graces were its animation and art direction at certain, very few points (like in this final performance) and it's romance teasing (the romance itself isn't very compelling, unique or well written at all--but I couldn't help wanting more of it).

And there's the comment. The "why didn't u just quit if you hate it so much u dumb hater" comment. You can't criticise any show without someone like you coming and saying that. As if it's the ultimate "gotcha"...
If I dropped it and later criticized it the comment would be "u didn't even watch it all, you have no right criticizing it" wouldn't it? Or the "it gets better" from manga readers.

I watched this to the end because believe it or not I was still curious how it'd develop (I did say I was interested in the romance...), and I remained hopeful it'd get better--especially since the manga is so highly rated. And on top of all that I'm a completionist and generally don't like quitting things I've started.
If I were you I really wouldn't get so caught up in other people's watching habits bro.

So the main reasons you keep watching shows you are literally glad are over is to have credibility when criticizing them ? That's sad.

I dropped two awful shows this season, namely Mayonaka and Shoumetsu Toshi and I can safely say they're garbage without forcing myself through them.

Kudo, you idiot! Your hand is worse because you hit your hurt hand at the wall when it's already in a bad shape. That was very reckless =_=

I liked the anime so, 7/10 :) I liked their performance as well, even if it had some mistakes ^^ Will have to wait for the second season that comes this fall ;w;

eh so it ended in the same note as other one of recent music show. what a coincidence.

Last few episodes had quite messy visuals and inconsistent direction still ultimately nailed well on the characters and the main twists. Anyway I am glad the overall adaptation ended up better than I initially expected given it was done by a rookie studio. Excited for the 2nd cour especially coming at best time along with Chihayafuru (could been more nice if they air at same day :P)

Honestly, this show started off so bad with all the forced drama and shit characters. Thankfully though it improved a lot as it went on. Pretty odd place to end the season though even if it is meant to be 2 cour at least give a post-performance scene where they all realize Kudo's hand or something

Ah well, 8/10 for having a young looking, short male character actually voiced by a male

I guess I'm an odd man out.
I've felt all along that the level of the animation was appropriate for this story. It supports the story without becoming the focus itself. It doesn't overwhelm the story, and does not detract from the story.

One could say some of the events are contrived, but outside of real life all events are contrived; heck there are many contrived events in RL! To me, they worked.

I'll agree that waiting until next season to see the final reaction to the performance is painful, but... I don't see what could have been cut from this episode to allow that reaction to appear given the length of each episode.

As it is, we saw the "real time" reactions all the way through, so we know that they were initially impressed, that they saw things fall apart, and then saw them pull together to become something even greater than at the beginning.

They aren't going to place well. At least, not if technical performance is a major criteria. The initial break when Chika fell out of sync is going to count against them big time in the judges' eyes.

However... how they all pulled back together, and what they moved up to as a result, this will be a performance that those who saw/heard it will remember for a very long time, and be impressed by. They will be considered a koto club to watch in the future.

There are a ton of individual storylines that intertwine in odd ways inside this story. Everyone has their own motivations and incidents in their past which influence their current actions; the backstory is well thought out. How they interact and influence each others growth is a central thing. Each time a new group is brought into the story, this circle of interaction expands. That's one of the things I look for in a story, and I have not been disappointed here.

As an adaptation, it was okay. The color palatte is too saturated and the directing is inconsistent. But there's impact when it matters and the koto performances are well done, so I can't truly complain. I wish the pacing was a bit slower, but it was necessary to get the tournament started by this cour to have viewers interested in the second season. Manga's content gets so much better from this tournament onwards, so I'm super excited for the next season.

I enjoyed the show quite a bit but also felt the hand-injury was contrived. I laughed again when they recapped Chika's slow-motion dive this episode. The accident was silly but served to show Chika's resolve, dedication and loyalty. As for the supervisor I don't think his 180 was just for that bit 1 minute later. He's been stuck in his own negative past and I think that scene may have been a changing point for his story arc which I expect will get a lot more play in the second season. This is one of those fight through your past demon's type of shows so he and everyone else will surely get a happy ending.

In this weak season the first 8/10 for me. All other anime were 7 or even below. Only Shingeki no Kyojin and Carole and Tuesday are better.

Overall nice chars and progress similar to a sports anime. I especially liked the teacher and his background. Nice last episode and performance.

The only thing I did not like was that teachers background did not yet get revealed to the others. And that it ended with the performance. (Would have liked to see 5 mins after the performance ended ... instead of having to wait now.)

Solid 8 and more like an 8.xx where from the other naime and the 7s I gave this season it was more like 7.0 or even 6.xx rounded up. :D
