As good as I thought. Love the cast, even though Ranta is annoying (at least he is self-aware) Hosoyan as MC surprised me, but yay! Love the slice of life-ish fantasy atmosphere. Also, the artstyle is great! Already love Yume. Also, everyone has good figures, just sayin.

8/10, one of the most promising.

This was surprisingly more enjoyable than I thought.

I like how the MC and his party are totally noob in this....an opposite of Overlord.

This definitely beats Danmachi in any ways.

so, this is really the first "stuck in a MMO" genre with weak MC, right?
or later he will be strong and overpowered as hell?

The first half of the anime felt good, but the other half was kind of boring. The talk about chests just didn't make sense. Would've been nicer to watch them fight and try again.

But I'm still kind of interested in the story. The first half felt like entering a new MMO which is nostalgic.

Definitely not the best first episode of the season. First half was pretty great, we got some action and world building. But the second half felt really slow....REALLY slow. They were mainly just talking and wasting time.

The art and OST are nice. None of the characters seem unique to me so far, but this is only episode 1.

It seems to me like this series has potential. I hope the next episode will be a little more exciting.

That "Awaken" line reminded me of Final Fantasy and it's obvious that I'm a fan of it, the art was beautiful, the action while interesting made me lol at the 6 who couldn't take on 1 goblin. while it was a little slow paced it did have some world building that I'd like to see more of and hopefully it won't become disappointing in the end.

Agreed. Large skips over stuf I was curious about like group formation and obtaining equipment. Then they put in talk like the boob conversation which served no purpose. 4/10 and thats probably generous.

People will probably still rank it high for aesthetics and the video game theme though it doesnt deserve to be.

Hmm, very nice art, I like the concept (even though it's been done to death) and am curious to see what's going to happen next.

A bit too fanservice-y though. Guess it'll be my guilty pleasure this season.

I will say I find the video game theme disappointing. I mean I know it shouldn't take away from the seriousness of it bu what happened to just being transported to another world? Why does it have to be a video game? I haven't read the LN but I hate it when directors sacrifice the story and potential character development for the sake of not even fan service but, even worse childish "boobtalk" as its been said.

Why does it have to be another world? Why can't it be a video game? It's a very fresh twist on the idea anyways, they're all amnesiac, and it justifies the mysterious dumping in a very RPG-like environment.
It's already a better execution than SAO to start with, and more immersive than Log Horizon.

Don't demean stuff like boobtalk.. All that stuff exists for adding humanity to the story; making them more natural, human, and relatable. Even if it doesn't develop character, it develops bonds between characters, and between the watcher and the characters. The purpose is Humanity.

Grimgar = Angel Beats x SAO (with better characters)

Finally! An anime with game settings that actually has human-like characters! No over-powered, super smart or feelingless mc.Finally an actual teenage boys! Oh, and those backgrounds are gorgeous! It's like I'm watching a big akvarel painting. Just gorgeous

Well, the art is quite good but this start is ... a little disappointing, characters look quite dumb to me and horribly weak (or the goblins are insanely strongs). Hope that's MC's gain some power because watching weaklings getting their ass kick by little monsters isn't entertaining.

The setting is ok, amnesia is a easy solution but a good one, waiting for the next episodes and hope that some characters die horribly to see some evolution.

That's a cool way of looking at it. Like I said it's not really a bad thing, maybe I feel it puts a but of a cap on it, so to speak. Which is more of my own quick than the setting. Plus it's only been done a few times so, yea, it is kinda fresh. As far as boob talk yea, it's a part of one's humanity, so's eating, shitting, and vomiting. I guess maybe I felt it was a bit out of place, and maybe could've had something else to flesh out the characters. I mean this does show that they're just simple kids and being in a strange place won't change that overnight. Even soldiers in times of war think of sex and partying after running through a corridor of bullets so I guess it's valid.

The boob talk was extremely irritating. And if that's how the majority of small-talk in this show shapes up to be...well, then that's just sad. Because I think this show can be good, but not if the dialogue butchers it.

Decent, only decent. Once the fanservice erupted I lost my interest in this already.

It would have been more appealing if the story followed the more intelligent and capable group.

Jesus Christ, stop brining up that clusterfuck Akame ga Kill. There is nothing flashy (besides art quality) and they are all weak.

Also stop with MMO. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ONLINE GAMES. It's stuck in fantasy world not game world.
For Japanese writers who played Dragon Quest as kids it's practictically inseparable to not use some RPG mechanics, NOT MMO mechanics.

You know, I think you might actually be right. I was definitely getting some motherly vibes from Manato and the big bear guy, especially when they were cooking with the girls.

And I hate to be stereotypical and say that straight man can't enjoy cooking, because they can, but I have a feeling that either these two men are just softies or perhaps are gay.

Which is fine! They are the most mature out of the bunch and I love them already.

Very good start ! Love the art and characters are enjoyable, Shihoru ! <3 Moreover the fact that there aren't immediately very strong fighters, is a plus !

As for the boobs talk, I don't think it's that tragic, reading here seems almost a scandal... I saw much more vulgar things in other anime.

Hope it continues well !

That was much better than i expected. Kinda strange if comparing to couple of chapters of manga. The art is great and completely different, and they already skipped quite important stuff imo. The boobs talk would've been not that bad if it wasn't that long. So for the opening, it was a slow start, but quite good. Looks really promising and hopefully it delivers.

I keep seeing people saying the characters don't have chemistry or their interactions are that good or whatever, it's not like these people are friends and know/knew each other for a long time, even if they did, they forgot, they are strangers to each other now, living and fighting together out of necessity, some of them might not even like it.

I think the problem is that we haven't seen the group interact with each other much at all and the one time they did it was talking about boobs. The anime glossed over the first few days where they weren't getting jack shit done and that kinda hurt the image of the groups leadership and interaction.

Agreed, setting the focus of their first small-talk on boobs sets a bad tone for the rest of the show. Would have been better to have this conversation after we got to know the characters better. Now that red-haired guy just immediately comes off as a douchebag.

Maybe so, but this type of character interaction is a concurrent problem in the source. Literally every conversation that is centered around Ranta and Yume is completely one-note.

Really enjoyed this first episode!

Really like the fantasy RPG feel to the anime. Don't know if this is a stuck in a game type or just a transported to another world type, but I'm liking it!

The art style and the OST are fitting to the theme also.

I really like these weakling characters and want to see some great character development as well as some great bonding moments!
So glad that I'm not a huge manga reader, because the manga readers WHINE WAY TOO MUCH and have to RUIN every adapted anime for the ANIME ONLY WATCHERS!

Yea that's the first thing he says iirc, I know why they included it but it's just bad placement for setting up the characters.

Maybe so, but this type of character interaction is a concurrent problem in the source. Literally every conversation that is centered around Ranta and Yume is completely one-note.

But it's more forgivable in the source since we had Ranta and Haruhiro go at it multiple times before he really goes off on Yume. Plus Manato and Mogzo barely did anything, if next episodes shows their chemistry together then it's fine but other than world building A-1 dropped the ball on character set up.

There's too much screentime wasted on pointless stuffs in the first episode. I felt it (and hence it makes me think that also the anime) was just a display of the personalities of the bunch of characters and a lecture on the game instructions. Unfortunately, the personalities were cliche and made-perverted SnK characters. =_= I'm not angry because it attempts to copy SnK. In fact the plot premise sounded so good when I read it and holds a lot of promise. But the story within the plot, the unfolding of it, the characters and the writing of the episode all need to be redone.

That wasn't bad but it wasn't fantastic either.

So to grasp the idea, a bunch of youngsters somehow get transported together to an RPG world and they don't remember most things. Ok............

That and somehow the Jobs look like Final Fantasy rip offs, I mean Dark Knight '-'

Alas I like it best when Hiroyuki Yoshino acts like an arrogant punk, it really suits him. The other characters are ok..........

Basically the huge group divided itself into two and we have 1 of them which just so happens to be full of newbies. Well predictable considering 1 week of training isn't gonna make you good.

Not sure where this series is gonna go though.

This whole video game anime genre was probably started by Tron, a Disney motion picture. What followed was .hack//Sign and it's many specials and spinoffs.

That was a response to someone earlier post about why a video game setting and not some fantasy setting. If you think about it further the fantasy and video game realms have actually become one in the same.
