THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The OP song is okay. It had a good atmosphere going on. Eh, I think I can get used to the CGI. The setting is actually well done and feels natural.

There's obviously some fantasy themes as I think one of the bird-like creatures resembles a harpie.

Anyways, I think this has potential. Not sure how I feel about most of the characters yet. Oh and the OST is decent.

Really boring I'm afraid. Even though they showed two episodes, nothing really happened. It's obviously for children. The story in the book is nothing special either. I doubt this will be successful.

OH NOES. THE BATHROOM.

Uh, I'm kind of disappointed. I was hoping for something adventurouss and fun, but not sure if that's what I'll get. So far the start is decent. Watched it raw and got a general gist of the story... the bird lady creeped me out a bit. I didn't enjoy the western feel to it, don't know what I was expecting there. 3D is fine.

Anyone else find it weird how the whole group just stares endearingly at the mother as she breastfed? o.o

I have to say this surprised me!

When this was announced me along with most Swedes shouted "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Ghibli don't do this to Astrid!!!"

But seeing the characters I've loved for all my life come to life in an entirely new adaption like this is so magical!

The cg will take some time to get into, but other than the the colors are very beautiful! The backgrounds are stunning! The music is brilliant, and the characters are just as enjoyable as they've always been!

Thank you Ghibli! For not screwing this up!
I am looking forward to what you will do with this! ^^
The 2002 Tokyo Mew Mew adaptation is not as great as you remember it being.

The animation wasn't bad especially with the surroundings and stuff. For the people though, just have to adapt and accept!
Ronja being born and then lightning strikes the castle.
I enjoyed the mood around the people. To be always able to laugh it off like that!

This being Ghibli, want to see how Gorou manages now that the studio doesn't make movies!

The animation will take some time to really get used to, but it's not a reason to skip this. The backgrounds are beyond beautiful, though.
It has been quite a few years since I read the book; it's going to be interesting to see what they make out of the source material!

That talking harpy eagle was creepy! Mattis aim was pretty bad, considering he's the leader of the robbers gang.

Baby Ronja is cute! A bit surprised she wasn't crying the whole time like most newborn does.

The castle is huge! I wonder if Mattis' ancestors were royal descents.. If so, the backstory should be interesting.

Slow start but has good potentials. Also, I'm pretty sure the CG animation wasn't done by Ghibli by rather Polygon Pictures, the studio which produced Sidonia no Kishi. Ghibli was most likely in charge of the background animation.

Im quite impressed! But if she was alive I dont think this anime would exist. She really hated cartoons, thats why she did not approve the pippi movie. So the staff must have a really good manuscript to be able to do this series. But as far its enjoyable :)

I'm not a huge fan of the cgi but I think I can get kinda used to it, if they keep on doing the adaption like this, because so far it goes exactly after the book, which I guess is a good thing.

Lovis isn't badass enough tho, I hope that trait of her will come through even more as the show progresses.

Other than that, I'm really happy with this so far and I can't wait to see the rest of it >w< I have such high hopes for this because I love this book and swedish movie adaption way too much and when I heard they'd turn this into an anime I actually turned into a little child again ^_^

Carefull, that might be the ebola. Stay away from this guy people.

Funniest comment I've read in a while XD After watching few 3D anime over the past few seasons, I'm pretty accustomed to it.

Those harpies were not what I was expecting...no wonder they made the ugliest noises. They can talk. That's just weird. Good intro overall. Mattis is pretty a fun guy and a cool boss. Lol at the beginning too when they were going to rob the people in the carriage.

Troll bird! I was actually wondering why the bird was making that sound. Turns out it's a harpy. A troll harpy XD

The moment Ronja opened her eyes, the world became a better place. That was so adorable.

It was quite slow, but i don't really care, since it was well done.

btw I don't get this hate about the 3d animation, because it was well done. The movements are pretty good, and i may say it is the best full 3d anime i've ever seen.

A couple episodes now probably no one will be complaining bout the animation, it's just a matter of getting used to it

I don't know what you expected, when the source material is written by a Swedish author. If you didn't expect it would have a western feel to it and expected something else, it's your own fault. Also it would be stupid expecting something else.

Seriously some people just complains about the weirdest thing.

I adore the book (as a child i've read every Astrid Lindgren book and watched the lovely swedish-germans adaptions such as Michel or Madita from the 70ies). So when i heard that this would be a cgi-anime i was really disappointed, but everything else turns out to be really well made! The characters stay true to their originals: strong Lovis, slightly dorky yet awesome Mattis and good old Per ^^ I really hope they follow the book closely (with some fillers).

Not too bad. It's probably gonna be a bit hard to get used to the CGI and the Japanese voices and I don't like how they changed a few things from the book/film, but overall it was ok... Looks like they're gonna adapt the book pretty well.

One thing though.

What the heck happened to Skalle-Per?

THIS is Skalle-Per! Not that creepy-looking geezer with leek hair!

It was enjoyable a very solid effort by Polygon and Ghilbi. The CGI isn't quite Pixar Quality but good luck getting that on a TV Scale but the cel shading and character designs do make it look nice enough. Not as stiff as I was afraid it might be so I'm impressed.

I'm not familiar with the Ronja stories to begin with but I found it enjoyable to watch this. It's got the magic and it's a nice change from all the otaku bait shows this year.
Overall this is looking to be a good series this season.

I haven't watched an adaptation of western literature for a while. Never heard of the source material, but I'll take its success and reception to be a good sign of what's to come. Goro's direction has shown improvement from his freshman to sophomore work, so I hope that carries over here.

Ronja was one of my favourite children books so I was looking forward to this. Decent episode, I will keep watching. I rather had it traditionally animated honestly, but I can get used to the CGI. Call me oldfashioned, but I certainly hope that this new animation style is the exception rather than a trend (I did like Nobunaga Concerto though).

Questions about the rice potage.
- Was this scene part of the book?
- If not, was rice even available (for pillage) in the middle of nowhere medieval Sweden?
- Is rice potage suitable for such small babies?

1. Not sure, it wasn't in the movie.
2. No, but there were no harpies either.
3. Probably.

Hm.

I grew up with Ronja, book and movie, and I liked it - but I can hardly remember it now. So, in a way, this is also a way to remember things.

But... I'm not sure about the CG. We'll see about that...
It looked very Heidi in the beginning, or so I felt. (But maybe for Japanese people, there's really not so much difference between Switzerland and Sweden? And who knows - maybe there isn't, I've never been to Sweden.)

I got through Sidonia no Kishi and Nobunaga Concerto without any complaints but this is just...Awkward. Whenever the characters move, the shadows do weird things that defy the laws of physics (and art) so it bugs me a bit. Was pretty decent otherwise. Cute intro episode.

Not a Swede, but also grew up reading and loving Lindgren books and I agree fully, Ghibli has done very well so far in the adaption (seen ep 1 and 2).
I loved how Lovis's and Mattis's characters were exactly as I remember from the book and how they showed the robbers undying (and a little silly) love for Ronja.

Made me really happy watching this :), especially as I also was bit afraid they would change too much or butcher it in some other way.

What you mean it isn't the case? If this was 2D it would look better and the movement will be more natural(a common problem of CG). So when it is CG instead of 2D of course people will complain.
