Pretty good first episode, rather slow paced but a good introduction to the main characters.

Hana and Mizuki already have pretty great chemistry so I can't wait to watch that go absolutely nowhere
@deltahalo241 Chemistry between people is not just romantic. And of course, not all people who match well should necessarily become a romantic couple because of this.

@Tongmuan Yuri bait from Hibike has nothing to do with this. Not even because there is essentially no yuri-bait here, but because most of the yuri-bait in Hibikу was the creation of Naoko Yamada and her decision to shift all the emphasis of the original book in favor of female bonds.

The first episode is an impressive start, weaving an emotionally charged narrative with striking visuals. Its blend of beauty and intensity sets it apart from the usual fare, though it might feel a bit heavy for some viewers.

With compelling characters and a story that hints at deeper themes, it has the potential to be something special. If you’re drawn to dramas with emotional depth and artistic flair, this one is definitely worth watching.

The visuals are beautiful, really fond of this art style.

The poems did feel a bit too vague and heavy at first glance, possibly a charm lost through translation too, but hey that's how artistic scribbles tend to be, a little distant, allegoric.

Either way, liking this theme, the visuals, the laid-back atmosphere so I'll keep watching.

Nice ed and op!
I really like the visuals. Hana is so cute lol!
And the setting of Hana living on an island is interesting. Well Hana has a great voice. I really wonder how the manga was like since it did not have sounds...
The theme is novel. Looking forward to Ep2!

One of the reasons I decided to watch this was because I like the studio behind this, Studio Bind, and also because it's a seinen anime. Having said that the synopsis sounded ok and after watching the first episode I'm mostly intrigued to see where this goes.

I just finished the first episode and wow the part where Hana recited on the beach literally gave me chills!

Also, the visuals and the OP/ED are wonderful while the theme is really intriguing.

The only thing is that I feel like the pacing was a little fast, but maybe it's just me.

In general, it looks promising so let's see how this will go!!

@RobertBobert lots of drama and crying which i got tired of. i'd like it if this was a more chill SoL, focusing mostly on the reading and her growth into it. something like act-age or akane banashi, but for the broadcasting club.

Storytelling/reading anime! cool!

Hana's complete switch up got me invested, that was amazing.

bruh... i tought it just a another daily life comedy pon MC. Didn't expect it crush me like a truck. it's absolutely amazing! the story seems light, but i'm sure they will give more emotional touch in it. the animation is so so, but you can see how the Photography director works. I can say they think it very hard for every scene. It feels like watching compilation of aesthetic scene with nice composition. OP and ED is amazing. can't wait to watch next episode. i don't plan to read the manga, i will stick with the anime for her Voice!

This looked promising but it was way better than I imagined. Studio Bind usual cooking the recitation of "I am Asura reincarnate" looked fabulous. Hana's VA did an amazing job too. If they continue making recitation this peak everytime it will be too good.
Probably the best opening episode so far and the best OP as well among the seasonal I watched.
Hana deserves the best, she will slowly keep getting more confidence. If anything happens to her smile I swear..

And with this, Studio Bind will further downgrade the quality of Mushoku Tensei. Already happened once with Onimai. I lost faith in Studio Bind actually giving a shit for the series they were even created for. If only Mushoku Tensei was handed over to a different studio that would prioritize that series.

Which is why I despise Onimai and now this series. Studio Bind ain’t big enough to handle multiple projects yet still maintain the same quality. Just hand MT to a more capable studio, preferably one that isn’t focusing on yuribait

The voice acting was lacking during that climactic Act Age scene; was overshadowed by the visuals.

Cute premise. Don't think about the logistics of the things Mizuki does. I'm more interested in what other activities the Broadcasting Club offers.

Light novels are difficult to adapt in a way that will satisfy readers of the original source. For me how they adapted Mushoku S2 was really good but not perfect I can understand that.

Well, that was the best debut episode of the entire season so far. I was not expecting that. I went in almost completely blind. I think I had read the synopsis at some point, but I didn't remember it at all. Anyway, love Mizuki's character already. Hana is fine, I guess. Hopefully, she gets solid development. I'm obviously hoping for yuri vibes throughout, but I'm cool with it either way. The animation, particularly the beach scene, was very nice. I like the art style, as well. Interesting premise that is familiar, but adds the unique recitation angle. The VA work was also really nice. I pretty much loved everything about this episode. The initial MAL score for this is baffling. MALiens have such questionable taste sometimes.

A few mistakes but an otherwise delightful opening episode.

The character name "nekoi" is a bit over the top. I don't think that the writer thought that all the way through. With a family name like that does that imply that the character worked to embody their family name? A little bit jarring ;).

The poem... was not good. Everyone praising the poem as good made it even worse. Like somebody writing a meh poem and then patting themselves on the back telling themselves what a great job they did. It had a good opening line but it then got stuck failed to move on. The next theme's imagery didn't quite flow with the first theme either. I get what they were attempting with parents watching their kids move on but it was a 6/10 attempt. In that type of scene the kids normally aren't asking their parents for strength. Perhaps friends, but not parents. The parents instead watch their children. They got it reversed and mixed things up and they got stuck on that theme. They gave it way too much time. That's why it was not good. They started with perspective of the child forging a new path and then had to maintain that perspective. That means that you can't use the parent example. It simply fails. You gotta do something else. You either work from the perspective of the parent like watching a seedling or you work from the perspective of a child. They tried to have it both ways and that's why their poem sucked. Sorry.

Otherwise I do love the episode :3. If only all school anime could be this good.

Incredible, simply incredible. I was somewhat worried about how her performance would go after the first two but they nailed it. Super beautiful visuals and pretty decent slice of life. Bit of a curious decision to assign an, essentially, completely new VA to Hana but she did great. Super looking forward to the next episode

Quite pleasant 1st episode with powerful scenes visualizing the experience on listening/reciting a poem.

Also, throughout the episode I more than once thought that this Mizuki girl reminds me of Hiodoshi Ao.
Went to check the staff list and got a "this explains a lot" moment: the manga artist (and the anime character designer) Musshu is actually the same person who designed Hiodoshi Ao, lol

I was enjoying the episode, but it seemed a bit too fast.
Around half way through, I switched to .75x speed.
It was at this moment, that the episode got a lot better.
And once Hana started reciting "An Asura in Spring", I fell in love with the series. (Yes, I did get emotional.)
I've now watched that scene twice in 1x speed and twice in .75x speed, I'd take .75x any day!
There are some disadvantages to this approach, like the occasional audio glitch, but I think it's worth it.
3/4 is still not ideal, 4/5 may be better; I don't have the the luxury to try many precise speeds.
Either way, I'm happy with my choice and I will probably be watching the whole anime that way!
(Even the OP and ED sound better at .75x speed!)

Hi, the same thing happened for me, after hear the poem recited.

Do you know if it is a real poem or just written for the anime?

If real, do you know of any way to read the poem in English?

I would appreciate it.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Wow, what a cute series.
Thankfully, and currently, there has yet to be yuri things—but if it does, instant dropped.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

@ejleon I seems like it is a real poem written by Kenji Miyazawa (宮沢 賢治).
I don't know if it is a well known poem in Japan (If someone knows more I would appreciate it if you added some details).
With a quick search you can find some sites selling a book with poems from the collection, both translated and in Japanese.

Other than those I did find a site with a personal translation, which also links to the original Japanese Text: fieldomoss.com
The passage used in the show is under the title "Spring and Asura (mental sketch modified)".
From reading that part alone, I'm not sure if I personally like the translation, though my opinion could change if I read more.
(For example, I don't know why "akebi" was translated to "chocolate".)

Keep in mind, I'm not well versed in either Japanese poetry or the language itself.
I suggest doing some research of your own if you are interested.

This episode does a nice job at introducing the cast and future plotlines for characters

I feel like out of everyone right Natsue's problem is the most noticeable and will be the one resolved first. Really hope she'll start to warm up to the others.
Her crush on Akiyama is also smth interesting, don't know if that's gonna be a running theme or a one off line but we'll see
Something's also going on with the vice president so I'm also excited to know more abt that
I don't know why but I loved the interaction between Hana and Touga at the beginning, hoping that we'll see more of them in the future

I really love the anime so far and I look forward to seeing how their club's dynamics will plan out in the next few eps

I don't know much Japanese yet. But here's what I found: https://www.tanoshiijapanese.com/dictionary/entry_details.cfm?entry_id=77330

木通 (akebi)

noun

1. chocolate-vine (Akebia quinata); fiveleaf; fiveleaf akebia
2. fruit of the akebia

From the link you gave, it uses the term 'chocolate-vine.'

From Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akebia_quinata), it's called 'chocolate-vine' because it gives off a chocolate aroma.

The main girl sounds a lot like Bocchi. So much that I thought she is voiced by the same voice actress (Aoyama Yoshino). But she also sounds a bit like Kumiko every now and then.
So far this looks pretty promising, and not like yet another slice of life anime doing cookie cutter CGDCT characters we usually get every season. Really natural and sincere, without any abuse of over-the-top cliches.

@patkarunungan Thanks for the info.
I see that the plant is very common in Japan, so for someone living there the term 'chocolate-vine' makes sense.
Personally, I would have translated it as 'akebia' or 'akebia-vine' to make it less confusing for non-natives.
It may be even better to change the plant to something more common in the west.
But, it does fit the poem pretty well, it is a vine that grows uncontrollably drowning the clouds of positive emotions.
As anxiety grows thicker and thicker, the akebia-vines become thorny rose bushes and a humus swamp of dark thoughts now dominates.
Devious flattery is overwhelming the mind and amber is entrapping the body. From anxiety to resentment to anger.
The dark side of April's light blooms... Grinding my teeth, I, am Asura incarnate!!!

This is my interpretation of the passage btw, the drowning feeling of anxiety transforming into a dark feeling of rage.
There are many ways to express that and here I've chosen one of my favorites: continually rising intensity and a calm moment before the explosion.
One of the reasons I recommend .75x speed for the anime is that they tried to do something similar with a fast piano background music, yet, in my opinion, there was not enough build-up for that approach to work well, which is why I extended the passage for my interpretation.
But if you slow down the scene, the now slower piano gives more emphasis to the sadness, while still being fast enough for the anxiety to build up.
I recommend watching at least this scene at .75x speed, I believe it's a lot better that way.
(The other reason for recommending .75x speed is that the dialog is generally a bit too fast (.75 is still a bit too slow, though I prefer slow over fast).)

what will be the next anime? staring competition?
and apparently any anime where the characters stop talking for more than 5 seconds is considered a seinen lol
japanese recitations can be summarized in a few words but they extend their length and make them seem important and special

@LucasDoragon yeah, believe it or not, reciting is a thing, and it has been since millennia ago. And not only in Japan. There even are competitions about it out there. So I don't think they are trying to make it seem important and special, it's just a show about performing arts. And you are not obliged to watch it if you don't want to. That's ok too.
